CLINIC: Hi, Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering about getting an abortion.
CLINIC: Okay. We don’t provide that service at this clinic.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have a number for a place that would?
CLINIC: Have you had a proof of pregnancy?
CALLER: No. Well, I just haven’t had my period since December 14th, and I’m scared.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, it sounds like what you need to do first is get a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you ever been to a Planned Parenthood before?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: We have walk-in hours at our clinic, in Kerny Masa, and we can do that at this clinic. We can give you a pregnancy test and then talk about your options.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: It’s just I’m really scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: I don’t know. And legally we can keep everything confidential within the limits of the law.
CALLER: Okay. What do you mean by that?
CLINIC: That means that you being 14, you know, that’s not legal.
CALLER: What’s not legal?
CLINIC: To be with a 21-year old.
CALLER: What do you mean? I mean we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: I’m not going to go into it with you right now. It sounds like you need to be seen. Like I said, we’re not going to report anything that is within the limits of the law. Okay?
CALLER: What does that mean? Would you have to tell on me and my boyfriend or what?
CLINIC: I can’t really say that right now.
CALLER: Well, would my parents find out? I mean, my parents can’t find out at all. I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: Okay. It sounds like you need to come in and get a test. That’s the first thing.
CALLER: But if I come in there, you’re going to have to tell?
CLINIC: I don’t know. I’m just telling you what I can tell you — is that it’s within the limits of the law. Your parents aren’t going to be in trouble for anything. I really don’t want to —
CALLER: Well, will me and my boyfriend be in trouble?
CLINIC: I really don’t know. You know, I’m just telling you — all that I know is that you’re under age and he’s 21. He’s above 18 years old. If you were with another 14 year old, that’s another story, but you’re not.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Because we worry about abuse.
CALLER: But he’s not abusing me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, you know, there’s a lot of information that I don’t know about. So I wouldn’t worry too much. I would come in first and see if you’re pregnant or not. Have you been having unprotected sex?
CALLER: Well, yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Just one moment.
(Pause)
CLINIC: Hello?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Are you still there?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to come in today? We have hours 1 to 4.
CALLER: Well, I just don’t want my boyfriend to get in trouble. Is there any way that — what could I do so that he doesn’t get in trouble?
CLINIC: I don’t know your name, so why don’t you come in and get the test done?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see when he could bring me.
CLINIC: We’re open from 3:30 to 6.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s totally confidential.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell about my boyfriend or anything?
CLINIC: You know what? Like I said, I don’t know what’s going on yet. You need to talk to one of the counselors and ask them.
CALLER: But if I don’t tell anybody, would it be all right?
CLINIC: That’s up to you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Well, could I call you back after I talk to him and see if he had any other questions. What was your name?
CLINIC: My name? My name is Laurie.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s okay.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?

CLINIC: Leddy (?).
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Sioux City Beach Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not at this clinic. I can give you the number of our clinic that does.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It is 619-683-7538.
CALLER: Okay. Do you know like — my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?
CLINIC: No. How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Hold on one second, okay?
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: (new person takes over the call) Hello?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: You were wondering if — I’m sorry. Say that again?
CALLER: I was — well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: Because you become an emancipated adult when you’re pregnant, but we do need an emergency contact if you were to terminate your pregnancy.
CALLER: Well, could I give you like my boyfriend’s number?
CLINIC: No, it has to be an adult.
CALLER: Oh. Well, he’s an adult. He’s 22.
CLINIC: Right. It has to be your guardian.
CALLER: Oh. Is there any way that you wouldn’t have to do that? Like because they can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Right. But this would only — we need to have an emergency contact in case of an emergency.
CALLER: Like what kind?
CLINIC: Well, I mean, there are risks involved when you are terminating the pregnancy. There’s medical risks involved. So if something were to happen, in case of emergency, we need to have your parents’ number in order for us to contact them.
CALLER: I can’t do that. Could it be like my friend’s mom?
CLINIC: No. It has to be your guardian.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, like if, say I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do — well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Do you have to tell my parents about that?
CLINIC: No. I don’t have to tell your parents about anything. But what I’m saying is, there is a little portion on the medical history where we ask in case of emergency who do we contact.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We need to have you fill that out with your parents’ name on there or your guardian, whoever your guardian is.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? But everything is confidential, but we do need to have that emergency contact if you’re under 18.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you — like my boyfriend was also wanting me to ask about birth control. Do you guys have that there?
CLINIC: Yes, we provide that here, and are you an established patient with Planned Parenthood?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. If this is your first time and you’re just wanting to get on birth control pills, we can provide you with a service called a delayed pelvic.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And with that service, we can see you pretty much every day.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Just give us a call on the day that you want to come in.
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I’m on birth control?
CLINIC: No. We don’t TELL people. Everything and all your services are confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? But you were asking me if we — you know, but we do need to have your guardian’s name in case of emergency.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Why can’t you use my boyfriend?
CLINIC: Because he — you — if you are under 18 we need to have your guardian.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Yeah. And if he’s not your guardian then we can’t put him down there.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Is it okay if we both come in and talk to you?
CLINIC: Concerning?
CALLER: Like the birth control?
CLINIC: If you want to get on birth control I can see you today I would say at 3:00.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to find out if he can — I don’t think he could take me today. But —
CLINIC: Okay, on the day that you want to come in tell them that you’re interested in a delayed pelvic.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? And they can start you on birth control pills.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And call us in the morning when, on the day that you want to come in, and we can accommodate you sometime in the day.
CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if my boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: Oh, it’s okay if he brings you. Uh-huh.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. If I talk to him and he had any questions, is it all right if I talk to you later?
CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: We don’t. Uh-huh.
CALLER: Because they can’t find out at all, because like well my problem is my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married, but like they just think, they hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so.
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Oh. That could be a problem.
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: Well, because of the age. I don’t know. I mean, because of the fact that you’re a minor it could be a problem only because he’s already overage.
CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married. I don’t understand what the problem is.
CLINIC: Well, that’s — it’s according to laws. You know, it doesn’t work like that, you know what I mean?
CALLER: I don’t understand.
CLINIC: Well, by law if they know that he’s that age and you’re only 14, they have to report that.
CALLER: What would happen to him? Would he get in trouble?
CLINIC: I don’t know.
CALLER: You don’t know?
CLINIC: I don’t know what would happen.
CALLER: Well, what should I do?
CLINIC: I don’t know. It’s your decision if you want to come in. I can schedule you an appointment.
CALLER: But would my boyfriend get in trouble? I mean, do you have to tell on him?
CLINIC: They will by law if somebody knows about it they have to legally report that, yeah.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, like, so like if I — like he was wanting to know if we could get birth control there.
CLINIC: Yeah, you can get — hold on a second, please?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: You can get birth control after you have the procedure done, yeah.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But nobody would have to know?
CLINIC: No. If your parents called, or whatever, we’re not going to say, oh yeah, she was here. No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We don’t do that.
CALLER: But what about my boyfriend? Like would you guy have to say anything about that?
CLINIC: That part? I’d have to find out for sure.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: Hold on a minute. Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
RECORDING: (music)
CLINIC: Okay. I can make you an appointment and everything will be confidential, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So our next appointment is available on February 25th.
CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if he brings me because I don’t have any other way to get there?
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine because you are going to need a driver, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What time do you want to come in? Early morning or a little bit later in the morning?
CALLER: Later.
CLINIC: Okay. I have 10:30, 10:45.
CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call my boyfriend and see because I have to see when it’s good for him.
CLINIC: Find out. Find out with him. But the next appointment, just to know, is on February 25. I’m pretty open on the 25th, 26th, that week, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Can I call you right back and see?
CLINIC: You’re going to have to — we’re going to close at 3:00, so.

CLINIC: Could you hold a moment, please?
CALLER: Yes, thank you.
CLINIC: Thank you.
(music)
CLINIC: Thank you for holding. This is Vicki. How can we help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No. Actually, we do the follow-up checkups here after the abortion, but we have a surgical center where you go. And I have their number if you want.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: There’s two locations — one in Encinitas and then one in Mission Valley.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And I’ve heard that the appointments might be a little easier to make sooner at the Encinitas office.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want the one in Encinitas? It’s like maybe a week and a half, two-week wait at the Mission Valley office.
CALLER: Well, actually do you know if you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: What they might do is talk to you about your partner, you know, and just help make sure that everything’s okay and that, you know, that you’re comfortable with being with your partner, that no one’s trying to force themself on you.
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: Like that you’re having sex of your own free will and that no one’s trying to make you, you know —
CALLER: Well, like —
CLINIC: — like if you need help to get out of a relationship that you don’t want to be in kind of thing.
CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: And you’re under 14 right now?
CALLER: Yeah. Well, I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Yeah. So they’ll address those issues when you’re there.
CALLER: Oh. Well —
CLINIC: Yeah, but, no, legally you can have the procedure done. The problem is, you do need to have someone with you.
CALLER: Well, is it okay if my boyfriend comes? Like he’s the one that would drive me.
CLINIC: Right. Yeah. That would be okay.
CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to say anything?
CLINIC: Your parents wouldn’t need to be– and ask the questions when you call them directly too. Tell them, you know, what —
CALLER: It’s just my parents can’t find out at all because —
CLINIC: Seriously, I know, really. We’re used to that. You know, it’s so common.
CALLER: They just hate my boyfriend because they think he’s too old, but.
CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so do you want — do you know how many weeks pregnant you are?
CALLER: Well, I think — well, the last time I had a period was like the first week in December.
CLINIC: Okay, so it sounds like you probably want to hurry and call the Encinitas office then.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It would be better. Hold on just a second. I’ll get the phone number for you. Do you have something to write with?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: It’s area code 760-634-8333.
CALLER: Okay. So like is it all right if my boyfriend pays for everything?
CLINIC: Oh, sure.
CALLER: Because he’s got a job and everything. He’s 22, so he’ll like be able to take care of everything.
CLINIC: Yeah. That would be okay. And they’ll tell you the exact prices and everything.
CALLER: Okay. But you don’t think they’d have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Ask them. You know, when you call them. Talk to them about it and see what they say.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Good luck with everything.
CALLER: Well, actually —
CLINIC: Are we close to you? We’re in Hillcrest. Is this a good place for you to come for your follow-up checkup?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Do you have any questions about anything for after the —
CALLER: Well, yeah. Like do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yeah. In fact, they’ll give you some there too before you leave. The day of the abortion they’ll give you like pills or the shot.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my boyfriend and I don’t want to have to go through this again.
CLINIC: Yeah. Right. And we totally understand that, and that’s what they’ll address, you know, and make sure, because they could give you the shot that you get once a month or once every 12 weeks or birth control pills.
CALLER: Okay. You guys wouldn’t have to talk about — like I wouldn’t have to talk about him or anything?
CLINIC: I’m not sure what you mean.
CALLER: Well, like you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about him?
CLINIC: Oh, you mean, like reporting him to the police or something?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Ask them. Call and ask them —
CALLER: Well, like about birth control or anything. Like if I —
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. It’s your choice. But again, to go over these — these are good questions you’re asking, and maybe ask to talk to the manger because you have age concerns and you need to try and make sure that you’re not going to have any problems.
CALLER: Well, like the only person that would be able to bring me in for the birth control is him. Would that be all right?
CLINIC: It should be okay.
CALLER: Like would they have to ask about him to get birth control or anything?
CLINIC: Oh, you can get birth control without your parents consent.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. So that’s okay.
CALLER: But nobody would have to know at all?
CLINIC: About your partner and his age?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: I think they’re going to ask.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: His age and, so ask what it is that —
CALLER: So what should I do?
CLINIC: Call them and talk to the manager and explain what you’re — you know, don’t make an appointment yet, but just call and explain your situation to her like you’re explaining it to me.
CALLER: But if I tell them, what would happen?
CLINIC: I don’t know. That’s why you have to call them.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. Just, you know, don’t give your information in terms of your name and just ask some questions first.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then, you know, we do just in general have a policy that we want patients, no matter what age they are, to get what they want, to get what they need, you know, to honor their choices about being sexually active and encourage young women — we do encourage young women to wait and to wait on a career and education and, you know — because there’s so much going on at this time in your life that it’s hard to really have a good sense of priorities and choices. And sometimes — we were all your age, and so we all —
CALLER: But I love him. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. Right. Right. And we just want to help every individual, you know, make the best choices. But they’ll just kind of spell things out and put things on the table for you to consider.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You know, and just in general.
CALLER: Is it all right like if I talk to you later?
CLINIC: Actually I won’t be here later.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But do you have certain ideas of questions you want? Or you can call here tomorrow. My name is Vicki.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know. I have to talk to my boyfriend see if he had any other questions or anything.
CLINIC: Okay. Okay. Then when you do call the Encinitas office they will be able to answer a lot of questions too, all about the procedure. They’re really helpful.
CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.
CLINIC: Okay? Good luck with it all. You’re welcome. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.
