RECORDING: Thank you for calling the Salinas Planned Parenthood at 316 North Main Street. (Spanish interpretation) If you know the extension of the party you wish to — (dial sound)… One moment, please, while I transfer your call. (music) Thank you for calling —

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Maria. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Besides Planned Parenthood? Or you can get information on for Choice.

CALLER: Do you have the number?

CLINIC: Choice? No, we don’t. The only number I have of course is Planned Parenthood in Seaside, but we don’t have anything to do with Choice.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you have the number for the other one then?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s 394-1691.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried because like, well my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: What? I’m sorry?

CALLER: My boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You don’t have to tell anybody. Everything’s confidential. And you can go have the abortion and nobody needs to know, and we don’t give no information whatsoever.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: More because you’re a minor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Don’t worry. Everything’s confidential, and you can have it, and nobody needs to know.

CALLER: Well, could I go in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yes. You can come here for the pregnancy test. Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, do you have Medical?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said that he was going to take care of everything. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine. That’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about all this and we decided we didn’t want anyone to know about us. But would he have to sign anything if he’s paying?

CLINIC: No. You’re the only one to sign paperwork. He doesn’t have to pay anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. Yeah. We can put you under the state funded program, and they can pay for it.

CALLER: Well, if I was on the state funded program would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. Nothing. Um-um.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. So if you come and ask for a pregnancy test, you know if it’s a negative — but when you come in instead of just asking for a pregnancy test tell them that you want to start birth control and you also want a pregnancy test because then you get a full consultation. Otherwise, you won’t be able to have, you won’t be able to see the nurse. Okay? So ask for birth to start birth control and a pregnancy test. If it comes out positive that’s fine, you know. But at least you already have assigned for a consultation, because otherwise when we just do the pregnancy test then you have to come back for a consultation.

CALLER: Well, if it comes out positive does anybody have to know?

CLINIC: Only us here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Only the medical assistants and, of course, only the office.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant and I was on birth control — I can’t drive. But could my boyfriend come and pick up the pills if –

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Nobody has to pick up the pills. You are the only one that has to come over and pick up the pills.

CALLER: So he couldn’t pick up the pills if I –

CLINIC: No, because everything is confidential so we won’t be giving him any information anyways.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Everything has to be done by you.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: And your name was Maria?

CLINIC: Marianna.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates (inaudible speech)

CALLER: Hello.

CLINIC: Yeah?

CALLER: Is this — where is this?

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I’m sorry. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much that costs?

CLINIC: It costs $350 to be asleep and $310 to be awake.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — the thing is, I’m going to be 14 in a couple of weeks, and I just — my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in a couple weeks.

CLINIC: Oh, girl. Yeah. We would have to report it.

CALLER: To who?

CLINIC: To Child Protective Service.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because your boyfriend — one, you’re under of age, you’re 14. Two, he’s 22 years old.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what would happen? I mean, would he get in trouble? I mean, I don’t want him to get in trouble.

CLINIC: We would have to call your mom.

CALLER: Well, you can’t call my mom. I mean, there’s no way — you can’t tell my mom.

CLINIC: I know, that’s why I’m letting you know right now.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I mean, my parents can’t find out at all. If they found out, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Well, ma’am, I don’t want to put you in a spot either, you know? But I’m telling you what could happen.

CALLER: Well, is there anything I can do so that they don’t find out?

CLINIC: I tell you — I don’t know.

CALLER: You don’t know? Well, I wasn’t really sure actually if I was pregnant. I just haven’t had my period since like January 3, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Okay, if it’s January 3, let me see. What’s today? It’s the 4th, huh?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, not unless you want to come in and do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, would you have to report it then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I’m going to take a pregnancy test. The one you have to pay for is the $10 one. It’s too early to take the free one.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So the early one would detect it if you’re pregnant or not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about this?

CLINIC: We could start your birth control.

CALLER: But would you have to report it then if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Oh okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, do you think — how much does the birth control cost?

CLINIC: Well, you’re going to get a pap smear done, and with the pap smear and the pills I believe it’s $80.

CALLER: Okay. But if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t think so — not on birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so, I don’t know. I’m just really scared now.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to come in for a pregnancy test first of all so we can get that out of the way?

CALLER: Okay. Well, what time do you guys normally do those?

CLINIC: Well, you could come in right now. We close at 4:30, but just be here by 4:15.

CALLER: Oh, well, my boyfriend’s at work until 5:00, so I can’t come in today.

CLINIC: We are open Monday through Friday to 4:30, but you have to be here by 4:15.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll call my boyfriend and see when he can get the time off work. But do I need like an appointment or anything?

CLINIC: No, you just walk in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would it be better if I don’t bring in him though?

CLINIC: No. That doesn’t matter right now. I mean, you first want to find out exactly if you’re pregnant or not. You know what I mean? We don’t ask you if that’s your boyfriend who brings you in.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to report if —

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: — I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: San Bernardino Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: Well, my last period was the first week in December.

CLINIC: Can you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

RECORDING: (music) You can make a difference. As a volunteer for Planned Parenthood you can have the satisfaction of helping people less fortunate than yourself and helping to promote the mission of Planned Parenthood. (music) (Spanish recording) (music)

CLINIC: Okay. Can you pinpoint a date in December for me, please?

CALLER: Well, it was for like the beginning or —

CLINIC: December 5th?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. February — you’re 10.2. What is your family size and your monthly income?

CALLER: I don’t have an income. I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay, so it would be $340.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if my boyfriend paid it — like he works. He’s 22.

CLINIC: That’s okay. It’s just based on yours. It’s not — because he’s not your husband, so you guys aren’t considered together, so it would be based on you. That’s what it is, $340.

CALLER: Okay. Like do you guys have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Well, like I just can’t let my parents find out, so —

CLINIC: Okay. Let me give me a little bit of advice. When you go home you will be having bleeding and cramping.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you still stay with your parents?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you will be sent home with medication.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if anything was to go wrong, we need a place where we can call you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend’s going to get a cell phone, and is it all right if you guys call that number?

CLINIC: Actually, we like to talk directly to the patient. We don’t like to go through people.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: If we can’t get to the —

CALLER: Well, I just can’t let my parents know at all.

CLINIC: That’s why I’m letting — that’s why I’m telling you, you — it’s kind of hard for girls to hide it from their parents because you have to take medication and you have to —

CALLER: Oh. Well, so what should I do?

CLINIC: I mean, we’ll be more than happy to help you here, but I’m just trying to let you know what to watch out for because you don’t want your parents to know.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you will be going home with paperwork.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So if you can hide that from your mom and your dad then you’re fine.

CALLER: Okay. So you think — what should I do? Just not —

CLINIC: You can’t stay at your boyfriend’s? They won’t let you do that?

CALLER: No, not really.

CLINIC: Okay. Basically you can just say it’s a heavy period if your mom was to ask why are you hurting, or whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because basically you — but you’ll be bleeding like for two to three weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Or sometimes it clears up sooner than that.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if it ends up that I wasn’t pregnant or anything do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. Have you done a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I did one over the weekend and it — I think I did it right, but it said I was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. So then why don’t you come in and do another one here with us?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then if it is then we can schedule an appointment, and the soonest day we have would be for — we don’t do them on weekends.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We do them on Mondays.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call my boyfriend and then call you back to see when he can get off to bring me?

CLINIC: Sure, that’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Bernice.

CALLER: Bernice?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
