CLINIC: Medical Clinic. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, well do you know how much it costs?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: December 26.

CLINIC: December?

CALLER: Yeah. Like the day after Christmas.

CLINIC: Okay. You would be looking at $320 to be awake with Valium or $400 to be asleep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know, like I’m just kind of worried because like my friend said that since I’m going to be like — I’ll be 14 later on this month, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, it’s got to be a legal guardian. When are you going to be 14?

CALLER: Like on the 9th.

CLINIC: Of March?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Oh. Well, I would just wait until then.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: I could set you up an appointment for after that date.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much would it cost?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you need to get in here before you’re 12 weeks, okay? Because that’s when our price changes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you’re going to be 14 on the 9th, any Monday or Thursday actually after the 9th, either on or after the 9th because our doctors are only here on Monday and Thursday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I just need to tell my boyfriend how much it will cost then because he said he would pay for everything. How much would it cost then?

CLINIC: Well, if you get in here before the 20th of March then you’re looking at the fees that I told you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: $320 to be awake and $400 to be asleep.

CALLER: So if I do it after my birthday you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t let anybody go in the back with you. We have other patients back there. But I mean, he can wait in the waiting area.

CALLER: Oh okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But he was going to pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. No. Just tell him it’s cash only, no personal checks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or we take Visa or Mastercharge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is — do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We repeat the pregnancy test when you come in, and you’ll also have an exam by the doctor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Well, we’re not really a birth control clinic. There’s a clinic here in Stockton called Delta Healthcare, and we send a lot of patients there for the birth control method.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. Not after you turn 14, no.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So basically just wait until I’m 14 and —

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: — and everything will be good?

CLINIC: Yeah. But go ahead and let him know what the prices are, and like I said we can set the appointment up ahead of time because you don’t want to wait until you’re 12 weeks because then it will be more expensive.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, are you going to be open tomorrow?

CLINIC: No. We’re closed on the weekend, hon.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’ll be open Monday morning at 9:00.

CALLER: Okay. So I need to call and get an appointment with you?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Cathy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, not at this one. The one on Benjamin Holt. That number is 477-4103.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they would — I’m just really worried because like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March and they, my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I was having an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. I think because of the age I wouldn’t tell them how old he is.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But, no, they don’t call your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So call them up, make an appointment. You have Medical?

CALLER: Well, no. He said, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay, that’s fine.

CALLER: But could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Oh, yes, you can come in this clinic for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. The whole thing is, I’m just really worried because like, um, my — I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. Now, the timeframe — it might be this timeframe. Okay? So you need to hurry up and come in, take a pregnancy test, so that way you can have, make that decision, whatever you want to do.

CALLER: What time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests up until 6:00 today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Would it be all right if he, he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just we were talking about others, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people knowing about us. So would you guys be asking questions and stuff?

CLINIC: Uh, it depends on — you do have paperwork to fill out, and then I don’t know what type of questions they’ll ask you about that. They don’t really get into it unless you get into it. So.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I don’t say anything, you guys wouldn’t tell, or talk to him or anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there, just so that we don’t have to worry about all this again?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential here.

CALLER: Everything?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if — the thing is, if I was on birth control, I don’t have a — I’m not old enough to drive. Would I be able to send my boyfriend to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: No. That we don’t do because everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: They don’t put you to sleep. You are awake during the procedure.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We have to make you two appointments. The first one is for bloodwork, paperwork and ultrasound.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: The second one is for your termination.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, I’m just really worried because like well, I’m going to be 14 in March. And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents, but —

CLINIC: No —

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Is it all right if he just signs whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. It’s a lie. That’s not true.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What’s not true, that they wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me because he would be the only way I could get there?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. So he doesn’t want anybody to ask him a whole bunch of questions or anything.

CLINIC: Okay. We can, we’ll see you at 1:40 March 8. Are you going to be paying cash for your services?

CALLER: He said he would pay for anything. But like on March 8 —

CLINIC: For your bloodwork, paperwork and ultrasound.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was like December 21st, so that’s why I’m just worried about all this.

CLINIC: Okay, let’s see.

(pause)

CALLER: Are you still there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. I’m looking at my — how far along you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: March 8th — by March 8th you would be 11 weeks. March 16 you would be about 12 weeks. According to your information if it’s right —

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: — you would be about 12 weeks by the time we brought you around for an appointment for a procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, let me tell you, if your information is slightly wrong and you’re over 12 weeks and one day, we will refer you out.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Now, what you could do is, is you could call (Southland?) Pregnancy Control and see if they will go ahead and provide an appointment there for you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: They go up to 14 weeks. Or I could go ahead and make you the appointment here, and if you happen to be more than 12 weeks and one day then we will refer you out.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I want you to understand that.

CALLER: That would be probably be better.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you prefer for me to make, just to make the appointment then?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your last name?

CALLER: But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: All of our visits here are confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. I just — my parents can’t find out at all. I don’t know what they would do if they found out. So.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But, all right. So?

CLINIC: So I can go ahead and make an appointment for Friday March 8 for your bloodwork, paperwork and ultrasound.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what time?

CLINIC: 1:40?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Last name?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: What’s your last name?

CALLER: Oh. It’s Smith.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Date of birth?

CALLER: March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Phone number?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend told me to give you his cell phone number, but I don’t have that number yet. He just got it.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: So is it all right — do you want me to call him and call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: Rayna (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that. You can call me back. Okay, Christine. Call me back with your phone number, your message phone number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And your appointment’s going to be for Friday March 8 at 1:40. I did tell you we don’t put you to sleep here?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: You’re awake.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But we’ll give you a local anesthetic. Also we’ll give you other narcotics. We do penthonal (sp) which is like twilight sedation. You must have a driver so it’s good that your boyfriend’s going to come with you. We could go ahead and give you that, and that will help you. You’ll be more comfortable. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. We’ll see you at 1:40.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, how much do those cost?

CLINIC: They range from $428 to $1,100 depending on income and how far along the patient is.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t have a job or anything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just, well my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March that you guys would actually have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: We wouldn’t contact your parents regardless of how old you are.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, do you know, like — well I’m not really sure if I am pregnant. Actually I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m really worried.

CLINIC: You should take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can come in tomorrow from 12:00 to 7:00.

CALLER: All right. Well, is it all right like if my boyfriend brings me and he’s there with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine. We’re not going to — we’re not the police, hon.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if I wasn’t like pregnant after I take the pregnancy test, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: Honey, everything here is confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So we’re not going to tell anybody. If you come in with your older boyfriend, we’re not going to, you know, say you can’t be with him. This is very confidential. You don’t have to worry when you come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, the only thing I could think of is that I don’t drive to pick up the birth control pills. Would my boyfriend be able to pick them up?

CLINIC: You need to come in for a consultation, hon. You need to see the nurse.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Okay.

CLINIC: All set?

CALLER: Well, I need to call my boyfriend to see if he had any questions, but could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can speak with anybody that answers the phone. It will most likely be me until 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.
