CLINIC: Good afternoon. Appointment Desk.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, it depends on income, and it depends on if the person has Medi-Cal or insurance. Those are the various factors.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll be 14 in March, and I don’t have a job. So what would I do for income?

CLINIC: Where did you have a positive pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t yet.

CLINIC: Then why are you asking?

CALLER: Well, I think I might be pregnant. I haven’t had a period since — my last period was the second week in December, so I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, why don’t you come in for a pregnancy test? And then we’ll figure it out.

CALLER: Is it all right if I’ll be 14 in March?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You’re talking about your age?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. I thought you were saying you were 14 weeks. Usually that’s what people mean. Okay. No, that’s fine. As long as you’re 12 and up, you can come here confidentially.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything? My boyfriend is 22, and he’s a great guy. It’s just my parents hate him, and they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: When you come in here, you cannot disclose what your partner’s age is.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Because we would have to report it. We’re mandated reporters.

CALLER: Who would you have to report it to? What do you mean?

CLINIC: No, only if you told us. When you came in here and you wanted to be seen by us, anything that you disclose within this clinic we would have to — because that is against the law.

CALLER: What do you mean it’s against the law? What’s against the law?

CLINIC: A 22-year-old having sex with a 13-year-old.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: No. It doesn’t matter. You’re a minor. You’re under 18.

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: Well, I would suggest coming in for a pregnancy test. I can give you the hours and when we’re doing it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thursday we’re doing them between 12 and 3. And it’s just by walk in. We’ll give you some forms to fill out, and then we’ll do a urine test. And then you’ll talk to a counselor. Okay?

CALLER: Is it all right like if my boyfriend brings me? Because I don’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to ask him any questions or anything?

CLINIC: We won’t have to ask him anything. We don’t need to ask him anything. You can have him as the support person.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. We can make you an appointment to come back.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know if I’m on birth control or not?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Everything’s confidential. We don’t tell anything. No one can call up and ask if you’re a patient, and no one can walk in and ask if you’re here.

CALLER: Well, you’re just so nice. I wish I could talk to everyone like you. What was your name?

CLINIC: Leah (sp).

CALLER: What was it?

CLINIC: Leah.

CALLER: Leah? All right. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at this clinic, but at some of our other clinics. Do you need to make an appointment?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me give you the number for the appointment line. It’s 1-800-230-PLAN.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask you something real quick?

CLINIC: I can try to answer it. This is actually the administration office, so I don’t know a lot about the procedure, but I can see if I can help you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No. There’s no parental consent laws in California, which means that you don’t have to get your parents’ permission or approval to get it done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s because like I’ll be 14 in March and like they just can’t find out or anything.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. You know what? There’s no law that says that they have to find out, so it’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like if I got birth control or anything that that would be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that would be fine.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: They don’t — no. You’re not allowed to tell anybody about that either.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Like would it be okay like if my boyfriend dropped me?

CLINIC: Sure, that would be fine. When you call and make an appointment they’ll give you more details, but that’s not a problem. You know, they’d probably like somebody to come along with you so —

CALLER: Yeah, he’s good. He’s old enough to take care of me. He’s like 22, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, yeah, give a call and they’re going to ask you some questions regarding when you last had your period and stuff just to determine, you know, your physical status, and then they’ll set you up with an appointment.

CALLER: But nobody has to know anything?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If like I have any other questions, could I talk to you?

CLINIC: You know what? This is not a clinic. This is the administrative office, so I don’t know that many details. When you call the phone center though they’ll be able to help you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Common (unclear) Women.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to say if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: It depends on how much you make.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have a job. It’s just I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And my friend said that — well, would you guys have to tell my parents? Because my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Well, you could get exempted eligibility, which is like Medi-Cal.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Yeah. We won’t tell anyone. It’s confidential, and you go through the Medi-Cal here.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for anything, so do I need that Medi-Cal thing?

CLINIC: Well, that way you don’t have to pay for it.

CALLER: How much does it cost? He just doesn’t want anyone to know about anything. So he just was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me check the chart.

(Pause)

CLINIC: What was the date of your —

CALLER: Of my what?

CLINIC: The first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re about nine weeks. Medi-Cal is the easiest way to go, and no one will know what it’s for.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No, no one would.

CALLER: But would my boyfriend have to fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: You would just have to.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure? Because I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can come in and have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, is it any way that it would come up that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, if you weren’t pregnant, it would come up that you’re not.

CALLER: Do you think that it’s possible that I’m not pregnant if I haven’t had my period that long?

CLINIC: Anything’s possible. But you should come and get a test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know where we are located?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend does. But if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there just so that we don’t have to go through all this again?

CLINIC: Yeah. But you’d have to have an appointment and get an annual exam to do that.

CALLER: All right. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: You can get a little green card that pays for it being that you don’t make any money. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And the pregnancy test will be free too because we’ll sign you up for one of the green cards.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So just come in, and we’ll do that for you.

CALLER: What time do you guys normally — what time are you normally open?

CLINIC: We close at 6 today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Chanel.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Have you had a pregnancy test done anywhere yet, or just a home pregnancy?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Other than a home pregnancy or —

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay, the first thing you would do, you’d need to come in and do your pregnancy test, and we can talk to you about options and tell you, let you know what your options are and then talk to you about the procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: The first thing to do is to come in for your pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you? My friend told me like — like, well I’m going to be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential here. We will not tell anybody anything, not even him.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Nobody. Everything’s between you and us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just I don’t want my parents to know at all, so they can’t find out.

CLINIC: No, no. I understand. I understand. No, they won’t. They won’t find out.

CALLER: Okay. I just —

CLINIC: Everything here is confidential. What’s done between you and our clinic is confidential. We don’t tell anybody other than yourself anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: My boyfriend could bring me in for a pregnancy test. Is that okay? When could I be there for that?

CLINIC: I’m sorry? Okay, you can come in today until 6:00 or you can come in tomorrow between 8:00 and 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Walk-in. There’s no appointment for that.

CALLER: Then what happens after that?

CLINIC: Then we talk to you when you come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’ll talk to you when you come in and go through your options of what you would like done.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had a period since like December 21st, and I’m scared, so.

CLINIC: Right, so you need to, you definitely need to get in for a pregnancy test. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: No, about anything that’s like it’s anything that’s done here is confidential between you and us. It’s a clinic here. We don’t tell anybody anything that calls in or even walks up to our window without your consent.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, thanks. That makes me feel a lot better.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: What — if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Arlene, but any of us would be happy to talk to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You might want to think about coming in tomorrow between 8 and 5. I wouldn’t come real late because you get booked early.

CALLER: OH, all right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Could I come like around lunch you think?

CLINIC: Sure. That will be fine.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: That will be great.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
