CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can you hold please?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(Long pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: It would start at 350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You need to come in and talk to a pregnancy counselor.

CALLER: Yeah, I guess. I don’t know.

CLINIC: You need to come in and talk to a pregnancy counselor. That’s the first step.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: She’s going to be here tomorrow from 9 to 11:30.

CALLER: Could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I’m just really scared because my friend told me that — well, I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents would have to know. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t need to know how old your boyfriend is first of all —

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: — because it sounds like we would have to report it.

CALLER: What do you mean report it? Who would you have to report it to?

CLINIC: Because he’s over 18 and you’re 14. So as long as you don’t tell us, everything’s fine. And we don’t need your parent’s consent, and we don’t need his consent either.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So it’s just you.

CALLER: Could I come in for a pregnancy test tomorrow?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s done on a walk-in basis. And she’s going to be here tomorrow between 9 and 11:30, like I said. And she’s taking like the first four to five people that walk in. And it’s not just for a pregnancy test. There’s also going to be some counseling involved and some education.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Not at that time. You would make an appointment to come back, and this time it would be to see the clinician.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Maria.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood San Ramone (sp). This is Adrien.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. The closest clinic to us that does is Walnut Creek.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like their phone number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It is 935-3010.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — I’m just worried because like my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: I, I really don’t know about that. You would really need to ask them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. The cost is $16.

CALLER: Okay. But does anybody have to know about the pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Hold on just a minute, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(long pause) (dialing sounds) (ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, San Ramone, this is Adrien.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was — I’m at my friend’s house, and her mom just came in, so I had to hang up. But I was on hold. So.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. You were calling about the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute.

CALLER: All right.

(dialing sounds) (ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, San Ramone, this is Adrien.

CALLER: Hi. I was the one asking about pregnancy tests and if you would have to tell anybody that I was there for that.

CLINIC: I know. I’m just waiting for the person that you need to talk to to get off the phone. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We haven’t forgotten about you.

CALLER: It’s just, the last time I was on hold it got disconnected, so I’m worried.

CLINIC: Okay. It should just be another minute, okay?

CALLER: Should I just call you back later?

CLINIC: No. It should just be another minute. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause) (dialing sound) (ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, San Ramone, this is Adrien.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see about if you guys had to tell my parents about getting a pregnancy, and you said that the lady was busy.

CLINIC: Right. Yeah, she actually tried to talk to you, but I guess you had hung up. So basically she’s not here right now, so I can try and talk to you about this. We — it is confidential from your parents. I need to let you know — I mean, it’s illegal for a 22-year-old to be having sex with you.

CALLER: Why? How is that illegal?

CLINIC: You’re 14?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Then it’s considered statutory rape because —

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. It is considered statutory rape, and if you come here and tell us that your partner is 22 years old, we would need to notify the authorities.

CALLER: Well, what if he didn’t come?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: So what if I didn’t tell you?

CLINIC: Then, I mean, we certainly do want to see you, and I don’t want to keep you from coming here for a pregnancy counseling. I just need to tell you that up front.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be better just not to have him there and not to say anything about him?

CLINIC: Right. Well, it’s really up to you, but i need to tell you that we are required by law if you come here for a visit and tell us that you have been having sex with a 22-year-old and you’re 14, we are required by law to report it to the police because it’s illegal. It’s, it’s rape.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So, and we do want to see you, so, but it’s really your decision. I mean, if you come in and just don’t tell us that then we obviously won’t be reporting it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But, you know, we really — this is something, you know, we would really advise against. I mean, you need to really be safe, and that’s a really big age difference. You really shouldn’t be sexually active with someone who’s so much older.

CALLER: But he said that we were going to get married and that he’s going to take care of me for the rest of my life.

CLINIC: Right. Well, that’s — you know, you’re really young to be making those kind of decisions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, and he really shouldn’t be dating someone who is 14 years old if he’s 22.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: It’s illegal for him to be doing that, and he knows that, I’m sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test that I — like if I came in there and got a pregnancy test, would I be able — if it was, if it said that I wasn’t pregnant would I be able to get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes, you would.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. It’s kept confidential from your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What about like the police though?

CLINIC: Again, that really depends on what information you give us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, you know, if we don’t know anything about your history when you come in, you know, then obviously we’re not under any obligation to say anything because we don’t know anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s really up to you what information you want to give us when you come in. I just want to be honest with you because we definitely want to see you. And, you know, if you’re not on birth control right now and you’re sexually active, we definitely want to help you get on birth control. But I need to tell you what our, you know, what we are responsible for doing legally because we are a health clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So as far as pregnancy testing goes, you don’t need an appointment for that. You can come in, just walk in. Since you are young, you can probably get signed up under state funding program which would mean the state covers the cost of your visit.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you wanted to make an appointment to get birth control, the state would cover that as well. It’s just an extra form you need to fill out when you come in, and you can get the results of the test when you’re here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can come in before 4:00 p.m. today or tomorrow we’re open from 9:00 to 7:00. So you really just have to drop in, okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay, well, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: They’re done in our Planned Parenthood in Orange. Would you like their number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It is 633-4550.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried because my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: Let me ask about that. Hold on, please.

CALLER: Okay.

(Spanish recording) (music)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Hello?

CLINIC: Okay. All you have to do is like come in and do a pregnancy test and talk to the medical assistant and then they can refer you for where they do the termination.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so, I wouldn’t have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it all right if like my boyfriend is there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah, but he can’t go in the back with you. Only the patients are allowed to go in the back.

CALLER: Well, okay. Well, it’s just, we were talking about everything and we decided that we didn’t’ want anyone to know about any, about us. Would you guys have to say anything?

CLINIC: Let me ask. Can you hold on, please?

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: (Spanish recording) Planned Parenthood has eight medical centers throughout Orange and San Bernardino Counties to better serve you. You can visit any of our medical centers at Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, Mission Viejo, Orange, Santa Anna, Southland and San Bernardino. Each of our centers provide walk-in hours for all of our confidential services with our medical professionals ready to help you. (music) Planned Parenthood realizes that accidents happen. That’s why we make emergency contraception available to all our patients. Emergency contraception pills can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Sometimes your condom breaks or you forget to take your birth control pills. Plan ahead and ask your nurse practitioner how you can take some EC home today. (music)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I was just asking the office manager, and she was telling me that if when you come in that your partner won’t be allowed to go to the back, and if it seems like there’s any kind of abuse or anything we can’t guarantee that they can’t report anything. But if there seems like there’s any abuse they have to report it. And anywhere you go to have a termination done they’re probably going to have to do the same thing.

CALLER: What do you mean by abuse? I mean, he’s not abusing me.

CLINIC: Because of sexual —

CALLER: We’re not — we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on a second, please.

RECORDING: — have questions, here’s where to find the answer. (music) At Planned Parenthood we’re excited to announce our first chat room ever. Go to PlannedParenthoodchat.com to get your reproductive healthcare questions answered 24 hours a day. Just type in PlannedParenthoodchat.com. It’s that easy. (music) In the movies they show you the foreplay and skip to the fireworks. They forget to mention the consequences. That’s why we offer all the services that women, men and teens need in the real world. Education, comprehensive family — emergency contraception, confidential HIV testing, prenatal care —

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, I just wanted to let you know also that the California law has certain requirements. I don’t know if you fall into this or not, so that’s why we asked you to come in so I can’t, I’m not making a judgment or anything. I’m just letting you know what we usually do here.

CALLER: What kind of requirements? What do you mean?

CLINIC: See, I don’t’ know if you fall into those requirements or not. So that’s why we usually have the patient come in.

CALLER: Well, would my boyfriend get in trouble if he comes in?

CLINIC: If he comes in with you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I really don’t know, to tell you the truth.

CALLER: Would it just be better if he wasn’t there then?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, so if I came in for the pregnancy test and it was — it said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so, just — well, if there was anything else I could think of to ask, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Josie.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

RECORDING: Hello. You’ve reached Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center. (Spanish interpretation) If you know the extension of the person you are — (dial tone)

One moment, please, while I transfer your call. (music) We’re sorry. We are helping other clients right now. We appreciate your continuing to hold. (music) Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center. Please be assured that your call will be answered as quickly as possible. (music) At Planned Parenthood Westside your call is very important to us. (phone rings)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. (male receptionist)

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We do abortions here up to 14 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: We have two methods of abortion. We have medical abortion and surgical abortion. Depending on which one, a medical abortion is, we do them here but only up to 7 weeks. And surgical we do here up to 14 weeks. So depending on your level of income on a monthly basis it looks like it’s between $420 to $560 for the surgical and between $480 to $600 for the medical.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t really have any income. I mean, I’m going to be 14 in March, and I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you thought about applying for Medical?

CALLER: What’s — no. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. I mean, it’s just — the thing is, like, I’m worried because like since I’ll be 14 in March my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Can you hold on one second? Let me find out. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine? One second, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(music)

CLINIC: Hello? (female assistant replaces male receptionist on phone)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hi, is this Christine?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: My name’s Claudine (sp).

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Manny just had me take your call to schedule you for an ultrasound.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How you doing?

CALLER: I’m kind of worried about everything, but —

CLINIC: Yeah. Okay. Well, we’ll get you all informed on how the process goes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Let me just get to my computer screen. So, Christine, first of all, you’ve done a pregnancy test at home or another —

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m really scared.

CLINIC: December 21st. All righty. Okay. Could you come into the clinic today for an ultrasound if we have an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Maybe tomorrow.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just, my boyfriend would have to bring me. He’s the only way I could get there. So, I have to call him and see. But is that all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah. Let me see what I have available tomorrow. Can I put you on hold for one minute?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks. Hang on… Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me see. Tomorrow’s Wednesday. Let me see what I have. I have something — hmm. That provider is out.

CALLER: Do you know — I was actually asking the guy before, like it’s just I’m really worried about all this because my friend told me that since like I’m — I’ll be 14 in March. She said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is it all right if he takes care of it?

CLINIC: Umm, I’m not sure exactly about that, and I’m not — I — I’m not sure if your parents necessarily need to be informed. Do you want me to find that out before you schedule?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, they can’t find out at all. I mean, if they found out I don’t know what would happen. I mean —

CLINIC: Yeah, I understand. All right. Let me go check on the exact guidelines around that so I can give you that information before you come in, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Can you hold on one more second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks.

(music) (ringing) (dialing sounds) (ringing)

RECORDING: Hello. You’ve reached Planned Parent Westside Health Center. (dial tone) One moment, please, while I transfer your call. (music) The Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center Office is conveniently located on the second floor at 1119 Pacific Avenue above Logos Bookstore in Santa Cruz. Our switchboard is answered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (music) (dial sounds) (ringing) (dial sounds)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Appointment desk.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was talking to Claudine and I was put on hold but the phone got disconnected, so I was calling back.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You know what? She wanted me to let her know if you called. In case you guys get disconnected, what number can she call you back? I’m going to transfer you.

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I’m at my friend’s house and her mom’s here, so if you call then she would answer the phone.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

RECORDING: (music) Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center. Please be assured that your call will be answered as quickly as possible. (music)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Thanks for calling back. Did you get tired of waiting, or did I –

CALLER: The phone got disconnected.

CLINIC: I tried to pick you up from another line, and it didn’t work, so that might have been what happened. I’m glad you called back. Well, Christine, I’m going to let you know really straightforward what the situation is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I hope that you’ll still come to our clinic. First of all, we are not required to inform your parents directly. What we’re required to do, you know, if you come to the clinic is report the situation. Basically, it is not legal for someone of 22 years old to have sexual intercourse with a minor.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married. I don’t understand.

CLINIC: I know. It’s confusing, and I can get you more information on it. The really wonderful person for you to talk to — her name is Sue — and she’s not in the clinic right now, but she will be shortly. So I’ll give you as much information as I can.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And then you can talk further to her, you know, definitely.

CALLER: Well, who would you have to report it to if you weren’t telling my parents?

CLINIC: We’re required to report the incident to the police.

CALLER: Oh, well —

CLINIC: And you could —

CALLER: Well, what could happen? I mean, would I get arrested?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. What would happen is that we just send in the information to them, and this is — Sue will be able to give you more information. But you’re not even required to talk to them. It’s up to you whether you want to do that or not.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We encourage you to do that, but we can talk to you more about that later. But we’re required to let them know about the situation.

CALLER: What situation?

CLINIC: Just that, you know, that there was an incident of this person over 21 years of age having intercourse with a minor. Because at this point it is illegal in this state. Okay? It’s called statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married, and he’s going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Yes. Christine, I absolutely hear you. I’m just telling you what the law says right now.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And what we’re required to do. So —

CALLER: So if I came in with him, he would be reported and I wouldn’t be able to see him anymore?

CLINIC: Not necessarily, no. I think that it would be a good idea for you to talk to Sue about it. But let me see if I can give you any other details. We would just let them know, but again you would not be required to even talk to the police at all.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want anybody to know about this. So.

CLINIC: Um-hum. And normally our services are completely confidential. Like normally, without this kind of circumstance that I’ve told you about the law, our services are completely confidential. Your parents don’t need to know, no one can ever find out anything. But then we are required in this specific situation to let the police know, and then it’s your choice of what to do from there, whether —

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: I would strongly encourage you — let me see. I would strongly encourage you to come in for your ultrasound. And Sue will be in later today, so she’ll be able to tell you more about the situation. But I would really encourage you to come in for an ultrasound.

CALLER: But the only way I could get there would be if my boyfriend brings me.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Um-hum. Okay. And he — yeah. We’ll talk more with Sue about that, okay? It’s very possible that you can both come in and just have a normal visit and leave and that we — you know, we make a phone call to report it and that, you know, that nothing else needs to be done, and you can get your care through our clinic. But we’ll clarify that with Sue, okay? Because she really knows all the details of —

CALLER: Well, would they have to say anything to my boyfriend? Would they get his name and arrest him after we leave?

CLINIC: I highly doubt it. I think really that we need to have Sue answer the questions for you, because I’ve pretty much told you everything I know. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I come in for like a pregnancy test and it showed that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control and I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: I think in any case we’re required by law to make a report.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I gotta talk to my boyfriend and see what he says. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. Do you want me to have Sue give you a call when she gets in to answer some more of your questions?

CALLER: Well, no, I can’t have anyone call me, but —

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I’ll call back.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me give you my extension so that you can get right through to my phone and you can leave me a message if you want. You can either use my extension which is 56, or you can just call the regular number. If for some reason I’m not there and you want to try to talk to Sue —

CALLER: Just ask for Sue?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can call the regular number and ask for Sue. She also has an extension, and she’s not often at her desk either, but she’s at extension 23. So if you don’t reach either of us on our extensions just try the regular number and have someone look for us. And Sue would definitely be able to answer all your questions and help you decide how you want to go about things. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: All righty. I hope that — yeah. Just call back if we can help or answer any other questions. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Take care.
