Pro-life student group launches pregnant on campus website

A national pro-life student organization has launched a new website designed to help students find pregnancy and parenting resources on their individual campuses.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America (SFLA), which has over 840 pro-life student groups across the United States, said that becoming unexpectedly pregnant while in college can be a scary situation for so many women, “Over half of abortions are done on women under the age of 25,” Hawkins said.

That motivated Students’ for Life to launch their new website www.PregnantOnCampus.com.

Hawkins said that many college students have no idea about the pro-life resources available to them on their college campuses which can help them stay in school and parent their children.

“SFLA’s own research shows that nearly 80% of Planned Parenthood facilities are located within five miles of a college or university. College students are prime targets for the largest abortion provider in the country,” said Hawkins. “No woman should have to choose between continuing her education or having a child, even it was unplanned and unexpected.”

Hawkins said that her organization has worked with universities across the country to help provide pregnant students on campus a one-stop-shop with all the information they need to keep their child and continue their education.

“This is why this website is so unique and needed,” she said, “Instead of running to the nearest Planned Parenthood, this website will help pregnant women find resources that are available on their campus right now.”

The website has a host of resources and testimonies to inspire students who find themselves pregnant so they can carry the child to term and continue their education as well.

“Finding out that you are pregnant is a life changing moment,” the website states,” Whether this is an expected or unexpected pregnancy, you may have questions. What are my options? What help is there for me? How can I balance pregnancy and a college education? All of these questions will be answered in time. First, let’s find you someone to talk to!

“If you know your specific need, you can use this website as a guide. Go to your school’s resource page, and click on your topic of need. You can then contact the listed organizations for help and support. If your school is not listed, go to the resource page for your state or for national organizations,” the site says.

When a pregnant student visits the website she will be able to read stories of other students, just like her, and how they walked through the complicated terrain of staying in school while pregnant. One of those stories comes from Jessica who had an abortion and suffered from post abortion depression when she met members of Students for Life.

Jessica says that members of the pro-life group offered her information and support.

Jessica said that although she knew her abortion was wrong, when she found herself pregnant again, the first thing that popped into her head was to have another abortion. As she struggled with her decision, Jessica said she opened up to a member of SFL, and they worked together to find her the resources and support she needed to be able to keep her baby.

“The most important thing to do and be for that person is a friend,” said Students for Life member Meghan, “I felt like I needed to be so close to her because there’s so many voices that were telling her otherwise. The community she was around was not pro-life and that was very hard to combat for me being the only real pro-lifer standing by her.”

“Being a student at a small Catholic college is a lot like high school in some ways,” Rosalie writes, “I had lot of worries as my pregnancy became more and more obvious. What will people think of me? Will I have to quit working in Campus Ministry? Will the faculty and staff who smile and talk to me today shun me or be awkward around me when they find out? I knew most people at my college were Christians and would probably disagree with my life choices. (I was unmarried at the time.)”

Instead of condemnation, Rosalie writes that she received love and support, “I was embraced, encouraged, and loved. Everyone saw past the circumstances of my pregnancy to celebrate it for what it was: a blessing. The president of the college himself asked me to tell him if he could help me in any way,” she said.
