CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, New Albany.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not. I can give you a phone number though.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Let’s see. I’m going to give you a phone number of a clinic in Louisville. It’s 589-2124. And let me also give you our 1-800 number if you’re interested in staying within Indiana, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let’s see. It’s 1-800-421-3731.

CALLER: Okay. I’ll be 14 in March, and friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents and have them sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. You’ll have to talk to those individual clinics, but no, that’s something that they’ll have to discuss with you, okay?

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there where you’re at to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. We can give you a pregnancy test, and we can give you some referrals.

CALLER: Would you have to tell my parents if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. I don’t have to tell your parents if you’re getting a test, but anything after that they’ll have to know.

CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. No, that’s kept completely confidential. You said you’re 14?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So is it all right if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Because I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, he can bring you.

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody if I was on that?

CLINIC: No, I wouldn’t. That’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Could I call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Jennifer.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: You need to go to Indie (ph). You can look in the phone book or you can come in and we can give you a list.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I get a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: Do you have to be like a specific age for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell my parents or have my parents sign anything? My boyfriend’s 22. Could he do it?

CLINIC: If you’re 13 and pregnant, we do have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, you do?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Like who would you have to report it to?

CLINIC: To the Child Protection Services.

CALLER: What do you mean? Would I get in trouble?

CLINIC: Well, if you’re pregnant, your parents are going to find out.

CALLER: But they can’t find out. They would be furious. I don’t know what you mean. What would happen?

CLINIC: I don’t know what will happen but you cannot get an abortion in Indiana without parental consent.

CALLER: Well, what could I do? Could I go someplace else?

CLINIC: You need to come in and talk to us. A pregnancy test is $5.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell my parents that I was there?

CLINIC: We have to report it to Child Protection, and they would probably contact your parents. I don’t know.

CALLER: My parents can’t find out at all.

(pause)

CLINIC: You’re probably going to have to tell them if you’re wanting an abortion because you have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Well, what if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Then we don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I get birth control then?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: As long as you’re —

CALLER: As long as what?

CLINIC: As long as you’re old enough we don’t have to. Under a certain age, we have to report it to the State Board of Health.

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March. Is that old enough?

CLINIC: Yep. We can make you an appointment in March. If you want birth control you can come in. It’s $5 for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I call my boyfriend to see when he can bring me and call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can call us back, okay? Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that would?

CLINIC: You would have to go to an abortion facility. And they’re listed in the Yellow Pages or the phone book under abortion.

CALLER: My friend said that — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents have to sign some stuff. But can my boyfriend do it? He’s 22.

CLINIC: I don’t know, ma’am, because we don’t do abortions. You’d have to call an abortion facility and ask them.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test? My friend just said to go to you guys so.

CLINIC: You can if you want. But if you already know you’re pregnant, I wouldn’t waste your money.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I wasn’t really sure actually.

CLINIC: Have you done a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: I tell you what, I’m going to save you some money here. Our pregnancy tests are $25. The WIC office is in the same building we’re in. They get a grant from the state, they do the same test we do, and they’re free. So let me give you their phone number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 936-8208. Okay?

CALLER: Do you know if it was negative if I could get birth control there?

CLINIC: You then need to come to us and make an appointment.

CALLER: But would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Oh, no, uh-uh, no. And when you’re done, if it’s negative, we’ll show you where to go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye. Huh?

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Portage Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. They do that at the Merrillville Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: 769-3500.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to have my parents sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: No, you have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way not to tell my parents? Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, then you’re going to have to go out of state.

CALLER: Like which state?

CLINIC: Chicago. Chicago is not requiring parental consent at this time.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how long that would take?

CLINIC: No, I sure don’t. You have to call the clinic in Chicago and talk to them about it.

CALLER: Okay. My last period was like the 14th of December —

CLINIC: Can you hold please?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: I’m sorry. Go ahead.

CALLER: My last period was like the 14th of December. Do you know if I could come in there to make sure I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, we could do a pregnancy test which is $5.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, everything here would be confidential.

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me? Because I don’t know how else I would get there?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. We do pregnancy testing up until 2:30 and then from 4 to 6 this evening.

CALLER: But you’re sure nobody has to know that I’m there?

CLINIC: We’re strictly confidential for that, yes.

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control at all?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential here.

CALLER: Okay. I don’t drive. Is it all right if my boyfriend comes and picks up the birth control?

CLINIC: Well, you’d have to go through an exam to do that. And then you can pick up supplies when you come in for your exam.

CALLER: Well, could I call you right back and talk to my boyfriend and see? What was your name?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I think so. Like I missed my period. The last time I had my period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. You really need to confirm a positive pregnancy test. You can come here. We can do that for $5. You can do a home one. If it’s positive, come in. We can give you lots of information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is?

(pause)

CLINIC: Now what?

CALLER: Well, my friend said that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever that is?

CLINIC: No. You have to have parental consent. But you really need not to worry about all that until you definitely confirm that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. So I don’t have to be a specific age to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Is it all right if he brings me? Because that’s the only way I’d be able to get there.

(pause)

CLINIC: I don’t care who brings you. Do you know where we’re at?

CALLER: Well, he knows.

CLINIC: He does?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Now, we’ve moved.

CALLER: Oh. Yeah. That’s what he said, so I think he knows.

CLINIC: But you need to confirm a positive pregnancy test before you worry about all that other stuff.

CALLER: Okay. So you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: You’re how old?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: If you’re 13 and pregnant, we do have to report that to Child Protection.

CALLER: But why? What do you mean? Why do you have to tell them?

CLINIC: There are state regulations that say —

CALLER: Nobody can find out. I don’t understand what you mean.

CLINIC: Well, there are state regulations we have to follow, okay?

CALLER: So you have to tell that I was there?

CLINIC: We don’t tell your parents; we tell Child Protection. And Child Protection takes care of it thereafter.

CALLER: But would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: Would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: Probably.

CALLER: So if you tell the child protective people, then they would tell my parents?

CLINIC: Okay. You’re worried about stuff you don’t need to worry about yet. You need to confirm a pregnancy test.

CALLER: But if I come in for a pregnancy test you said that you would have to tell the child protective people.

CLINIC: Right. State regulations say, sexually active 13 — or 13-year-olds who are pregnant have to be reported. We have to follow regulations.

CALLER: Well, so what could I do then?

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. I’m not sure what you’re wanting from me.

CALLER: Well, I want to be taken care of and not have my parents find out. Because if they found out I don’t know what would happen. They just can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. If you’re pregnant, they’re probably going to find out.

CALLER: But they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. What specifically do you want from me?

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want to be pregnant.

CLINIC: Okay. First of all you need to have a positive pregnancy test and know for sure you are pregnant.

CALLER: But if I come in there to get a pregnancy test, you guys would have to tell people that will tell my parents, right?

CLINIC: We have to tell Child Protection. Whether or not they talk to your parents is up to them. If they feel there’s sexual abuse going on, they’re probably going to talk to your parents.

CALLER: But me and my boyfriend are in love. We’re not —

CLINIC: I cannot change regulations.

CALLER: Well, then where can I go to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can go here. They have like birth right centers. You can go to the drug store and buy them over the counter. But before you worry about all this stuff, you need to have a positive pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I went to the drug store, are the ones there accurate?

CLINIC: Just talk to your pharmacist and ask them which one they recommend.

CALLER: But what if I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there and get birth control?

CLINIC: Well, if you run that test and you’re not pregnant, call us back, and then we can talk to you, set you up an appointment and tell you what we can do.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control from there, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: Depends on your age. After a certain age we don’t have to report it. But under certain ages we do have to report it.

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, then come see us in March.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody then though?

CLINIC: Not if you’re 14.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. You’ve been so nice. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Just call back, and we’ll answer any questions you have.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: I don’t usually give that out because we never know who you’re going to talk to when you call. I might be off that day. But just call back anytime you need to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not at this location. We do provide that service at our Bloomington clinic, one in Indianapolis, and one in Merrillville.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know.

CLINIC: I recommend the first step if you’ve not had a pregnancy test, if you think you might be pregnant, go ahead and have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Can I come to you for that?

CLINIC: You can come here. We do free pregnancy testing here. Are you late for your period?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we could do a test on you if you’d like.

CALLER: Would you guys have to — my friend told me that since I’m 14 that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign that?

CLINIC: Well, you don’t have to parents’ permission just to have the pregnancy test. But in the state of Indiana you would have to have a parent’s permission to obtain an abortion.

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March. Do they still need to know?

CLINIC: So you’re not 14 yet?

CALLER: Well, i’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re only 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Up until 18, you have to have parents’ permission for abortion in Indiana.

CALLER: But I could come in there for a pregnancy test and they wouldn’t have to know?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test, yeah. And it is illegal for your boyfriend to be having sex with you at your age.

CALLER: What do you mean? I don’t understand. How is that illegal? We’re in love.

CLINIC: There’s a law against a man of 21 having sex with a young girl of 13.

CALLER: But we’re going to get married. What could happen to him?

CLINIC: Well, it would depend on whether your family wanted to press charges. But you guys just need to be aware of that; that that is unlawful for him to have sex with you.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Whatever your feelings may be, that’s just the law, and it’s very black and white.

CALLER: Well, could I still get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. You can get a pregnancy test. If you think you’re pregnant, you can have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: You guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: No. Pregnancy tests you can come and get just on your own.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he’d have to drive me. I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: That’d be okay.

CALLER: Would it be all right if he came in though?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. He can come in. But the nurse would probably want to talk with him some about the situation.

CALLER: Well, would he get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: She would need to talk to the Welfare Department about it. Then they would take it from there.

CALLER: They can’t find out. What would happen if they find out?

CLINIC: Well, I’m not sure exactly how they would follow up on that. Would you like to talk to our nurse? Because I know she’s more involved with that than I am.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Ellen.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. Hang on just a second.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (Talking to someone else) Karen? You got just a sec?

CLINIC: Is it okay with you if I tell her what your situation is so she can come talk to you and let you know what to expect?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: You are 13?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. It doesn’t matter. If your boyfriend’s that old, then it has to be reported to Child Protective Services.

CALLER: So I couldn’t come in for a pregnancy test or anything?

CLINIC: Yes. If you’re sexually active, and you come in here and tell me you’re sexually active, then I have to report it to the Welfare Department.

CALLER: What if I didn’t tell you?

CLINIC: Then why would you want a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I guess you’re right.

CLINIC: You know I’d be glad to do it, sweetheart. I’ll be glad to see you, and I’ll be glad to talk to you and whoever. But I just want you to know up front that anybody who is — it’s even against the law for a 17-year-old girl to have sex with an 18-year-old boy. So when that happens, I have to call the Welfare Department. They in turn have to report it to the county prosecutor. But if you are pregnant, then that’s going to be a non-fact because you’re going to be delivering (unclear). And if your boyfriend is 18 or over, I can’t guarantee you that the county prosecutor would not prosecute him because he has in the past.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, is there anything I could do at all?

CLINIC: About what?

CALLER: Just to not get in trouble.

CLINIC: Not have sex. That’s the only thing you can do. Because if you get pregnant at your age, then they’re going to know that you’re pregnant. That’s something you’re not going to be able to hide.

CALLER: Well, is there someplace I could go at all?

CLINIC: For what, sweetie?

CALLER: To get an abortion?

CLINIC: Not without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Uh-uh, no. I can’t think of any state that would terminate you at your age without parental consent. There may be some, but I’m not familiar with all the laws in Wyoming or Utah or those kind of places.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If he took you across state lines, then that’s kidnapping. Then he’s in more trouble than ever —

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: — at your age. Okay?

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: Do you think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the second week in December, so I’m just worried about it.

CLINIC: Well, you can buy a pregnancy test at Wal-Mart or CVS or any of those stores and try one of those tests if you want to.

CALLER: Are they usually accurate?

CLINIC: Sometimes, sometimes not. Maybe fairly.

CALLER: But I couldn’t come in there without getting in trouble?

CLINIC: If you come in here, I have to report it to Child Protective Services that you are sexually active.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Now, it’s up to them to pursue it.

CALLER: Do they ever not pursue it?

CLINIC: I’m not aware of a time. Okay? The only thing that you can do to absolutely not get in trouble or to not get your boyfriend in trouble is to not have sex.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty, sweetie.

CALLER: But could I come in and get birth control there without you guys telling anybody?

CLINIC: If you tell me you’re sexually active, I have to report.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty, hon.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.
