CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. I have a 1-800 number. We have a Woman’s Choice in Indianapolis.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 1-800-352-1901.

CALLER: Okay. What was the Women’s Center in Indianapolis?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s a Woman’s Choice.

CALLER: Okay. And that’s the 1-800 number?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — my friend said that my parents have to sign some stuff. Is it all right if my boyfriend does it because he’s 22?

CLINIC: That I’m not sure. That I can’t answer. You’d have to ask them.

CALLER: Is there like — well do you know if there’s like an age limit or anything to have an abortion? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, not that I know of.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you’ll just have to call and ask, talk to them about it.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know like — do you know if my parents have to know or anything?

CLINIC: That I’m not sure of either.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come into there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: To make sure that you are?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: They just can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: No. We don’t — that’s confidentiality.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And it’s $5.00 for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: It is?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys have to know anything about him at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. So like you wouldn’t be asking like a whole bunch of questions or anything?

CLINIC: No. We just do the pregnancy test on you and talk to you about it, and give you whatever information you’d like to have.

CALLER: So if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. That would be your choice.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? And to that, it’s $27 to do HOPE which is called the (unclear) exam, and then your pills are $11 per pack.

CALLER: All right. Well, is it okay if like I call you back to get an appointment?

CLINIC: You don’t need an appointment to do neither one of those.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well if my boyfriend had questions or anything that I didn’t think of, could I call and talk to you? You’re just nice. I don’t want to talk to anyone else.

CLINIC: Yeah. I’ll be here.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Brandy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Avon Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah, Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at this particular clinic, but I can give you the number to our abortion clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 352-1900.

CALLER: Okay. Well do you know — like my friend told me that my parents have to sign some stuff —

CLINIC: If you’re under the age of 18, yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Is there any way — like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: No. No. Parent’s signature only. He’s not your guardian.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there — like I’ll be 14 in March. You sure that they have to —

CLINIC: They have to sign, sweetheart. You have to be — if you’re under the age of 18 you need parental consent.

CALLER: Is there any way around that?

CLINIC: You realize that you are under the age of 14 and your boyfriend’s 21 years of age — that’s considered child abuse. So.

CALLER: But I don’t understand. We’re in love. We’re going to get married. He’s not abusing me.

CLINIC: Well, the minds of, the eyes in the court it’s considered child abuse.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail.

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: For rape.

CALLER: What?! But he’s not raping me! We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: That’s fine, but in the eyes of the law it is considered rape.

CALLER: Well, is there anything I can do? What can I do?

CLINIC: You can call the abortion clinic. They might be able to give you some ideas.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell my parents, and arrest my boyfriend?

CLINIC: No. They just won’t be able to see you there without your parental consent, so —

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Then you’re going to have to call the abortion clinic and maybe they can give you some referrals to out-of-state clinics.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would they have to say anything about anything?

CLINIC: You’d have to call the number that I gave you and they can go over that information with you.

CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to go to you guys. Could I get a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Yes. It’s $5.00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to tell anybody that I’m getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Is it — well, my boyfriend has to bring me. Do you have to tell them about him or tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: We don’t care how old you are to get a pregnancy test, or how old the person is that you’re sleeping with.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: In the state of Indiana, if you want an abortion, okay, you need mom and dad’s consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m just letting you know that with his age and your age it’s considered rape. He’s in the wrong. He should not — I mean, legally through the eyes of the law he should not even be touching you. It doesn’t matter if you’re in love or not. It’s still not right. That’s what the law thinks.

CALLER: But are you going to report him if I go in there?

CLINIC: If you have an exam with us or anything like that, yes we would have to report you, but a pregnancy test, no. But I would suggest is that since he’s 21 years of age — does he have his own place?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’d have him buy you a pregnancy test and take it there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then you’re going to have to go — if you don’t want mom and dad involved you will have to go out of state.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We do, but with your age we would have to report you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? So your option at this point until you turn 15 would be to use condoms.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Condoms, foam, something like that.

CALLER: Well, you were saying I could go out of state. Which state would I —

CLINIC: You could go out of state to have an abortion.

CALLER: Which state?

CLINIC: The numbers I gave you?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: That’s the number you need to call. They can answer all your questions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so if I wanted to come in for a pregnancy test could I – like if I had other questions —

CLINIC: If you have $5, we’ll do a pregnancy test on anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: We would prefer that you call the abortion clinic.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: The number that I gave you, the 352 —

CALLER: Well, I just wanted to go there to get a pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, they would be able to answer any questions about abortion for you.

CALLER: Is it okay to come to you guys to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah. But if you have any questions — what I’m saying is if you have any questions about abortion you need to call the number that I gave you.

CALLER: Okay. So could I come and see you for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can come see us for a pregnancy test, sweetheart. But we wouldn’t be able to give you — you know. It would be best if you have questions about abortion you need to call the number that I gave you.

CALLER: Well, I just wanted a pregnancy test. Is it okay to come in there?

CLINIC: Yes. They’re $5.00.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Dawn.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bedford Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not here at Bedford. Bloomington does. Would you like their number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-828-7525. And they can give you some more information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I get you to answer some questions?

CLINIC: I can try.

CALLER: Okay. Well, its just my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they have to tell my parents —

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: — and have them sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: No, because they’ll turn you both in.

CALLER: They’ll turn us in? Why? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because — you’re going to be 14?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If your partner is older than 14 or 15, it is against to law. Okay? If you’re 16 and your partner is 17 or 18, it’s against the law. If you’re under 18 and your partner is older than 18, it is against the law.

CALLER: Well what can I do? What would happen?

CLINIC: They would turn you in to Child Protective Services and they would turn him also, and possibly have him arrested. If your parents want him arrested, they could arrest him.

CALLER: So they would have to tell?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah, they have to tell, especially if you’re only 13.

CALLER: Well, is there any way that they don’t have to tell?

CLINIC: No, not at that age.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Not a whole lot. You’ll probably have to tell your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents. They would be furious.

CLINIC: I’m sure they would. Call up there and talk to them. They can give you some more information exactly on what you need to do and how maybe you can get around that. But most generally, I’m pretty positive you’re going to have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: You can, yeah.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell on us?

CLINIC: Don’t bring him with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know, if you bring him in, I’m going to have to turn you in.

CALLER: Okay. After the pregnancy test if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. And you have to get an exam to do that. Have you missed a period?

CALLER: Well, yeah. My last period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Come in for a pregnancy test and we can go from there.

CALLER: Okay. Like if I was on birth control, would you have tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When is your birthday?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: If you can wait until March when you turn 14 to come in and get birth control. At 13, yes, I believe I still need your parents’ consent for birth control. When you turn 14, I won’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But at 13, yeah, you do.

CALLER: So could I call you back and talk to you some more? What’s your name?

CLINIC: I’m Jerrie (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You can call Bloomington and ask them some information on that also. But you’re not positive you’re pregnant, right?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: So that’s what you need to do. You need to come in for a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? You can come in today up until 5:30 or tomorrow between 9:30 and 4:30.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend has to drive me. Should I just like leave him in the car?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

(phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was talking to Crystal.

CLINIC: Okay. She’s still on another call.

CALLER: Could you help?

CLINIC: I might be able to. What do you need?

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Jane.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I was just wondering like if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: They’re $380.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be like a specific age for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, you have to have parental consent for that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever?

CLINIC: No, no, no. It has to be your legal guardian.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them at all?

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Belmont.

CLINIC: Okay. What county?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Do you have plates yet for your car since you’ve moved?

CALLER: I don’t drive. I don’t know.

CLINIC: License plates. Has anybody bought new license plates for your car since you’ve moved?

CALLER: I don’t think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I am thinking that Belmont is in Brown County.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So there’s something called a judicial bypass, but you have to be a resident of Monroe County to get that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And that’s something that you go in front of the court to do. But you cannot have an abortion in Indiana without parental consent if you’re under the age of 18.

CALLER: Well, if I do the judicial bypass do I need a lawyer?

CLINIC: You have to live in Monroe County.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So that’s why I’m asking you. I don’t think Belmont is Monroe County. I’m pretty sure that’s Brown County. So basically what you’re going to have to do is either talk to your parents about this and get one of them to sign for you, or you’ll have to go to Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And how old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. You do realize that this a reportable sexual abuse case?

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: It means that —

CALLER: Nobody’s abusing me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: You’re under 14 and he’s over 18. That makes that a reportable offense.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: Well, your parents have to know for one.

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all. They know him, but —

CLINIC: Well, that’s beside the point. We can do nothing for you without parental consent. And if you get parental consent, if anybody finds out about this — and I don’t know what you’d be into if you went to Illinois; I don’t know — but that is sexual abuse. And it reportable by law.

CALLER: But we’re in love. He’s not abusing me.

CLINIC: That doesn’t have anything to do with it. No 13-year-old should be having intercourse with a 22-year-old. So it’s a reportable offense. I’m just telling you this is what you’re going to get into.

CALLER: Well, could I get a pregnancy test there to see if I was pregnant.

CLINIC: I thought you said you were pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I think I am. I mean, I don’t know.

CLINIC: Yes, you can get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: I just missed my period in December. I had it the second week of December —

CLINIC: So you missed two periods?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: And you haven’t taken a home pregnancy test even?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Yep. You can do that. The charge is $5.

CALLER: But you guys have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: Anytime anybody under 14 is sexually active, yes, it is a reportable thing. I would highly encourage you to buy something over the counter if you don’t want to get in a mess.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well if I wasn’t pregnant after I took the home pregnancy test, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. You’d make an appointment to come in, and we’ll get you started on a birth control method.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Yep. We have to tell them that you are under 14 and you are sexually active. That is a reportable thing.

CALLER: Well, what happens after I turn 14?

CLINIC: Then it depends on the age of your partner.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. What do you mean? I don’t understand that.

CLINIC: (sighs) Okay. Just a second. Him being over 18 and you being under 16 but over 14, that is a sexual misconduct with a minor. It’s against the law.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You just got to weigh all these different things to know, but it is child abuse.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Your parents don’t know that you’re sexually active with this 22-year-old?

CALLER: No. They can’t find out at all. They hate him.

CLINIC: I can’t believe that they don’t know that you’re sexually active with him.

CALLER: But they don’t.

CLINIC: Well, that’s kind of what you’ve got to deal with.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not at this site. But I can give you a number if you’d like.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Hold on just a moment.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you ready?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s 1-800-352-1901.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And have you already been confirmed pregnant?

CALLER: No. Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah. I can do the confirmation, and you have to have that before you go.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to do that?

CLINIC: Like I said, all I can do is pregnancy confirmation. Other than that, I don’t know anything about it.

CALLER: Well, like do you have to have my parents sign anything for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Not for just the pregnancy test.

CALLER: So you guys don’t have to tell anybody that I’m getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: That’s correct.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: That’s completely fine. I mean you’re basically going to be in the waiting room the whole time anyway. So yeah, that’s fine, no big deal.

CALLER: Okay. Well would he have to sign anything or anything saying that he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Ummmmm — can you hold just a second and I’ll check?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you there?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Actually, because of your age and his age — and I hate to say this, but we would have to report you.

CALLER: What? Who would you have to report me to? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You said you were 14, right?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re actually 13 right now and he’s 22, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s statutory rape. We have to report that.

CALLER: What is that? What do you mean? He’s not raping me.

CLINIC: I know. I understand that. But by our Planned Parenthood guidelines because of your age and his age, we would have to report you to the state of Indiana.

CALLER: Well what could I do? I don’t want him to go to jail.

CLINIC: Right, I understand that. But I’m just telling you by our protocol, if you come in here for anything, we have to report you to the state of Indiana.

CALLER: So what could I do then?

CLINIC: I have no idea. I don’t know what your avenues are from there. I’m just explaining to you what I can do.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So you can come in here and get the confirmation for a positive pregnancy, but if you come in here I have to report you to the state of Indiana.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t do that at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, then I’m sorry.

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there for birth control?

CLINIC: Because you’ve already told me your partner is 22, we would still have to report you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying. If you come in here at all, period, we’re going to have to report you because you’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, is there like a different Planned Parenthood that I could go to?

CLINIC: All of the Planned Parenthood protocols are the exact same. No matter where you go, they would have to report you to the state of Indiana.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: That’s why I wanted to check because I wanted to give you a little heads up to let you know. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. (chuckle)

CALLER: If I took a home pregnancy test, do you think that those are accurate or anything?

CLINIC: They are accurate, yes. But if you need any other services, whether it be abortion, adoption or keeping the baby after that, you would have to have a positive, confirmed pregnancy test from a nurse or from a doctor.

CALLER: From a doctor?

CLINIC: Or from your doctor, right.

CALLER: Could I get birth control there? Like if the home pregnancy test was negative, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: You would have to come in and have an exam and get your birth control that way. But like I said, we’d have to report you to the state of Indiana.

CALLER: Even for birth control?

CLINIC: Yes, for anything. Anytime we find out an under-age person is having sex with an older person of that age group, we have to report it to the state of Indiana.

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March. Does that make any difference?

CLINIC: It has to be under the age of 16. So you’re below by several years.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Could I call and talk to you again?

CLINIC: Sure, no problem.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Maureen. And I’m the only one here besides the nurse.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. We only do it at the Maryville office. Do you need their number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It’s 769-3500.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like my friend said that you guys have to — like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: No. The state of Indiana the law is if you’re under 18 you have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them because if they found out I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: No. The only other thing you can do is go to Illinois because they don’t need parental consent. But you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, see that’s a legal thing because of your age.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because I know anybody that comes in here that’s under 14 even if they’re just coming for a pregnancy test or to get on birth control, we have to report it to the Child Welfare Department.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. Because that’s considered child abuse if you let your child be sexually active under 14 years old.

CALLER: So I couldn’t even come in there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Not without me having to report it.

CALLER: Oh, well who would you have to report it to?

CLINIC: It’s the Child — what’s it called? Department of Child — Child Protective Services is what it is.

CALLER: So like would my parents get in trouble?

CLINIC: Well, they might.

CALLER: Well, what would happen to them?

CLINIC: Yeah, I don’t know exactly what they do. All I know is I have to fill out a report and fax it to that department, and then they — I don’t know if they make the phone calls or they do a home visit or something. I don’t know.

CALLER: Oh. So what could I do?

CLINIC: Like I said, probably what you could do is try calling one of the Planned Parenthoods in Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And see what their law is. I can give you that number if you can hold on a minute. I have to run to the back and get it. Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. I have the number to one in Illinois, and then they could, you know, if they can’t do it then they probably could give you numbers to different ones.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, that’s area code 312-266-1033.

CALLER: Okay.
