CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t do them at this clinic.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Indianapolis has a clinic that does them. I can give you their phone number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 1-800-352-1901.

CALLER: Do you know if you have to be a specific age for that? Like i’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll probably need a parental consent.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever they need to sign? Is he old enough?

CLINIC: No. You need a parental consent. It’s the law in Indiana.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell my parents? It’s just they hate him. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: You can try calling that clinic and see if there’s other states that may not require parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Well, we’d have to report it to CFS.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because of your age.

CALLER: But I don’t understand.

CLINIC: We just have to. It’s just a state law that we have to report —

CALLER: Would I get in trouble?

CLINIC: They would just notify your parents.

CALLER: But they can’t tell my parents.

CLINIC: That’s what I mean. Just contact the clinic number that I gave you.

CALLER: But like if I was getting a pregnancy test, they would have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Just contact them, because if it’s abortion related, then it’s all kept confidential.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s what I’m trying to tell you. Okay?

CALLER: Well, I was just told to come to where you’re at. So that’s why —

CLINIC: Did you contact the Women’s Clinic already?

CALLER: No. Like my friend told me that I should go to you.

CLINIC: Just contact the Planned Parenthood Indianapolis because they’re better equipped with all that information, the legalities behind everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we’re limited in what we can do at this clinic. We don’t do the same services at each clinic.

CALLER: Okay. But if I’m not pregnant, could I get birth control there where you’re at?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Hold on a second. I’ll just make sure because of the age thing. And how old is your boyfriend?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. We would definitely have to report that then, because of his age.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because it’s considered rape.

CALLER: What? I don’t understand. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know. But in the legal proceedings and everything else — in the law — it’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love. I don’t understand.

CLINIC: I know that, hon. But you have to understand that in Indiana anything under — if you’re having sex with somebody who is an adult, it’s considered state statutory rape.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? Where can I go?

CLINIC: I would try contacting the Women’s Choice — have you taken an over-the-counter pregnancy test or anything?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Try that first just to make sure if you are pregnant or not. And then after that, you can give us a call. You can ask for Angie. She’s our manager here.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Melissa (unclear).

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Madison Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: Yeah, hold on. Are you calling from Indiana?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. This is a number for Bloomington. It’s 800-828-7525. And here’s one for Indianapolis– 800-352-1901.

CALLER: Okay. I’ll be 14 in March. Do you know if they would have to have my parents sign anything? Like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Yeah. You would have to have a judicial bypass —

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: — but your boyfriend wouldn’t be able to sign anything for you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You would have to see a judge, and they would have to write you a bypass to have it done.

CALLER: How long does it take to get that done?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. When you call the Bloomington number or the Indianapolis number, either one of them, they’ll be able to tell you. Just tell them what your situation is, then they’ll be able to tell you because I’m not really sure, hon.

CALLER: Okay. Could I get a pregnancy test there where you’re at?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to tell anybody about that at all?

CLINIC: No. Do you know that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I think so. I’m not real sure.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Like my last period was the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. And you’ve not taken any pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s a good day and time for you to come in and do that?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend. I’m not really sure. He’s the only one that could take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Then just go ahead and do that, and let me know.

CALLER: Is it okay if he comes in with me though?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Paulette.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We refer to our Planned Parenthood office in Indianapolis, and then after surgery if you want to come here locally for your three weeks checkup and for birth control, we can do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Their number is 1-800-352-1901.

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: I have a lot of questions. But like I’m just worried because like my friend told me that since I’m going to be 14 in March, she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, the clinic people can help you work through that. So you can call and talk to them about it and see what they recommend.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Um-hum. You sure can. There’s not a charge. We do have to have your Social Security number when you come in.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a Social Security number.

CLINIC: Oh, you have to have. If you were born in the United States, you have a Social Security number.

CALLER: Oh. Well –

CLINIC: So we’ll need your Social Security number when you come in. Come when you have about 45 minutes. There’s not a charge for the test, and we just ask —

CALLER: Well, were could I find my Social Security number?

CLINIC: Well, I have no idea where you keep it. That’s your private business.

CALLER: I mean, I don’t work. I don’t have a Social —

CLINIC: If — were you born in the United States?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: You have a Social Security number, and you need to bring that number with you when you come in. Come when you have about 45 minutes, and you can come in today before 4:00.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Sure. He can sit in the waiting room.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just he said that he would pay for everything, and we were talking about —

CLINIC: There’s not a charge for this test. You just have to bring your Social Security number. When you have 45 minutes come in today before 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know about us though? Would you guys have to ask anything about him?

CLINIC: We’ll take your medical history when you come in just like we do for every patient. We need medical information. All right. Thank you.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: We can talk about it. You know, it’s not fair to you to be playing all these what-if games. Come in for the test, we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I have to go. I have another patient.

CALLER: Well, if I had other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Whoever answers the phone can help you. I have to go now.

CLINIC: Martinsville Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: In this clinic, no.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: There’s a clinic in Bloomington and one in Indianapolis.

CALLER: Do you have the Bloomington phone number?

CLINIC: 1-800-828-7525.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really scared because like my last period was December 14th. And I don’t know if I am pregnant, but I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. So your last period was when, honey?

CALLER: December 14th.

CLINIC: December 14th. Okay. What do you mean by you don’t know what to do?

CALLER: Well, I’m just scared.

CLINIC: You’re scared?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test anywhere?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We do pregnancy tests on a walk-in basis. What you need to do is you need to get a pregnancy test first, okay? Because there may be something else going on.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You never know. Or it could be that you’re pregnant. But you need to find out if you’re pregnant how far along you are, because that can make a big difference.

CALLER: Okay. Well it’s just my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, that you guys have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Is he old enough to take care of that, and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re 13?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. No. Because of your age, it has to be a parent that’s when you.

CALLER: But my parents can’t find out at all. I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: Well, I understand that. But what you have to realize, in the state of Indiana at the age of 13 if you’re having sex, that is considered sexual abuse.

CALLER: But he’s not abusing me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: But what you don’t understand is this, in the state of Indiana it’s against the law.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: The one thing that you need to do is you need to be able to talk to your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t. They don’t ever understand anything.

CLINIC: I understand that. You might come in here and talk to my nurse practitioner in here and see, but —

CALLER: What’s her name?

CLINIC: Her name is Christy. In the state of Indiana, it’s against the law for anyone to have an abortion under the age of 18 without a parent with them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Under the age of 18.

CALLER: Well, could I go anywhere else?

CLINIC: I couldn’t tell you. I couldn’t tell you about other state laws. I don’t know.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If I did know, I couldn’t tell you that anyway. I’m not allowed to talk about other state laws as far as abortion’s concerned. I can only talk about the Indiana state laws. But in the state of Indiana, under the age of 14 if you have sex with anybody, even if that person is 14 years of age and you’re 13, that is considered sexual abuse, sexual assault on a minor. Even though it’s consensual, it’s still considered abuse. It’s against the law.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: They could go to jail.

CALLER: Well, he can’t go to jail.

CLINIC: I’m just telling you that. I’m just letting you know that, okay? And if you’re talking about getting an abortion, the farthest along you can be is 12 weeks, okay?

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: So if you had a period — when did you say your last period was?

CALLER: December 14th.

CLINIC: That was the first day?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me figure this up real fast. Okay? The first day of last period is December 14th, and today is January 20th. So that would make you, if you’re pregnant, around 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But the whole thing is, he can’t go with you. Your parents have to show a drivers license, some form of i.d. stating who they are.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could he be there with me for like the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: I don’t advise that, number one, because if the nurse practitioner knows that he is over the age of 16, she’s binded by law — or over the age of 14, she’s binded by law to report it to the Welfare Department.

CALLER: So if he came in, you guys would have to get him arrested?

CLINIC: Well, we would have to report it to the Child Protected Services if he was here with you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what should I do? He’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: I’d just have him drop you off and come in and do the test, and then pick you back up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But to be honest with you, you’re going to have to one way or another tell your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t.

CLINIC: I understand that, that you feel like you can’t. But the whole thing is this. There is no clinic that’s going to perform anything you without one of your parents with you. Okay? It’s against the law for them to. So you’re going to have to either have a mother or a father with you. You can’t have a boyfriend, because they have to prove they’re your parents. Okay? And because of your age, they definitely have to be there because of how old you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He’s 22 years old, and you’re 13. So he’s almost 10 years older than you, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s a big age difference there. I would talk to my parents because that’s the only people that’s going to be able to help you, I mean, as far as being able if you are pregnant getting an abortion. Because he can’t. And if he tries to take you anywhere, then they can get him for, you know, all kinds of stuff. I mean, he can be arrested and thrown in jail for a long time. And that’s state law. If he tried to take you somewhere and get an abortion, that’s another form of abuse, like a sexual predator. You need to talk to your parents.

CALLER: All right. You’re so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I talk to you.

CLINIC: Well, sometimes moms though when you’re a teenager you fight with them. The first thing you need to do is you need to get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Alright? So we’re here until 5:00 tonight and 5:00 tomorrow.

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Cindy.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Merrillville. How may I direct your call?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was trying to ask some questions about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. What you need?

CALLER: Well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: $350. We do them a minimum of six weeks, the maximum of 13.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: You get an ultra sound done the day of the procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So do you think that’s within the time period?

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely. We take Visa, Master Card, cash and check. We do them on Mondays and Wednesdays only.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I’m really worried about — I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m 13. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: You have to have a parent with you.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Indiana state law is that your mom and dad have to be here.

CALLER: Alright. Well is there any way not —

CLINIC: Actually, we’ll have to report you to the state anyway because of your age.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re under 14.

CALLER: But I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. How old is your boyfriend? He’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. We’ll have to report it.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: They’ll just — I don’t know. I can’t tell you. That’s out of our hands. You know, it’s against the law to be with someone that age.

CALLER: Well, if I was 14 would you have to report it?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if I didn’t tell you?

CLINIC: We have to have i.d. with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well what can I do?

CLINIC: You would have to have a parent or guardian come with you.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents at all. They can’t find out. They’d be furious.

CLINIC: Well, that’s your option. Your other option is to go to the court, and you’d have to call a judge. And you’d have to tell a judge why you can’t tell your parent, and they would have to give you something legally stating that you don’t need a parent here. But once they find out your boyfriend’s 22, you know, he probably would go to jail anyway.

CALLER: He would go to jail?

CLINIC: Yes. That’s against the law.

CALLER: But he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only one that’s ever here for me. If he wasn’t here — he can’t go to jail.

CLINIC: Well, then you’re best off just letting your parents know rather than the court.

CALLER: Well, what if I didn’t tell the court about him.

CLINIC: They would want to know who got you pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if he wasn’t 22, would it be different?

CLINIC: Probably.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So what age is it okay?

CLINIC: Eighteen in Indiana.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, I can give you the number to Illinois. They might have different rules.

CALLER: You think so?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 312-266-1033.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to come in there and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t tell anybody. But if your test is positive though, we probably would have to report that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay.

CLINIC: That’s anywhere you go though.

CALLER: Well, when do you do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: How far are you from here?

CALLER: I’m at my friend’s house, and she’s in Maryville where you’re at.

CLINIC: Does she have a car?

CALLER: Well, no. But my boyfriend can bring me.

CLINIC: Can you be here in 20 minutes?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. He has to get off work and come get me. But I don’t think we can get there in 20 minutes.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you come in any time Monday between 8:30 and 5.

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure nobody would have to know if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Hold on one second, okay? I’m going to find out.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am, if your test is positive, we would have to report you to the state. Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No, then we wouldn’t. Our job is to take care of you. We don’t want you to get pregnant. But if you are pregnant, we have to report you to the state.

CALLER: So you wouldn’t tell on my boyfriend if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore, so we wanted to get birth control. But I don’t drive yet. Could I have my boyfriend pick up the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Well, first we want to make sure if you’re pregnant or not, so we’ll do it one step at a time, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll see you Monday between 8:30 and 5.

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Kara (sp).

CALLER: Okay.
