(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Elkhart Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know of anybody that might?

CLINIC: There’s a clinic in South Bend and there’s a clinic in Niles. Those are the only two in the area. You want those numbers?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. The clinic in Niles is 616-683-6100. And the clinic in South Bend is 219-272-1010.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff —

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: — but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. You have to have parental consent. And no one else, unless they’re a legal guardian, can do that.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them at all? Because they can’t find out. I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: The only other way in either Michigan or Indiana is to be declared — I can’t think of the word. You have to be emancipated.

CALLER: What does that involve?

CLINIC: Well, that involves going to court and have a judge declare that you are taking care of yourself and that your parents are not legally bound to take care of you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: Well, there’s a lot of paperwork to fill out, and you have to make a certain amount of income.

CALLER: But I’ll be 14 in March. I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. (Sighs) Well, my only concern with this whole conversation is that if you’re 14 and your boyfriend’s 22, there’s enough of an age there that that’s a problem.

CALLER: What kind of problem? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, legally that’s against the law. That’s called statutory rape.

CALLER: What? What do you mean?

CLINIC: At 14 you’re not old enough to consent to have sex with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s besides the point. I’m just mentioning that to you. You may have problems becoming emancipated. I don’t think a lawyer under those circumstances or a judge under those circumstances is going to do that. I would talk to those other two clinics.

CALLER: What could I do then?

CLINIC: Well, you may need to talk to your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents.

CLINIC: And why is that?

CALLER: If they found out, they’d be furious. I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: Well, at some point there’s no way around that. I mean unfortunately — in either of these states they can’t do anything about it. You have to have a parental consent, and they have to prove that. They have to have picture i.d.s and they have to have birth — it’s not anything that you can work around.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there to get a pregnancy test? I’m just scared because I missed a period, so I don’t know really. But could I come in there and see?

CLINIC: You could set up an appointment. When was your last period?

CALLER: It was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: We have an opening tomorrow at 9:30 or tomorrow afternoon at 2:15.

CALLER: Well, I would have to call my boyfriend to see when he could get off work, but okay.

CLINIC: You’d have to let us know.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys have to tell anybody if I’m getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. We don’t. We don’t need parental consent here. That’s a different ball game.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: No. If you — if you’re not pregnant — there’s always a chance that you’re not pregnant — then the smart thing would be to get on a method of birth control if you’re going to be sexually active.

CALLER: You guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Not at 14, no.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Not if you’re coming in for a pregnancy test. I’m not going to tell anything about it. We’re not going to give any information to anybody.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. Let me know.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, anybody here can schedule your appointment. Just tell them you need to set up an appointment for a pregnancy test. You’d like to come in tomorrow. And it’s a real small clinic, so we’ll get you in, okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come to you? I mean, you’re just nice.

CLINIC: My name is Kim if I’m here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right like if my boyfriend brings me? Because I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. I can give you the number to the clinic on Webster that does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 424-5005.

CALLER: Okay. I’ll be 14 in March. And my friend told me that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Because in the state’s eyes you are not old enough to be having sex, and he is way over age.

CALLER: Well, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. I don’t understand.

CLINIC: That doesn’t matter.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He can go to jail.

CALLER: He can go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah. Cause that’s molestation.

CALLER: But we’re in love. He’s not doing anything —

CLINIC: That still doesn’t matter. And, yeah, your parents do have to be with you for you to get an abortion.

CALLER: But my parents can’t find out at all. If they found out, I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I don’t know then, because I know your parents do have to be with you.

CALLER: Well, it is okay if I come in for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Would you guys have to say anything about my boyfriend or tell my parents?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: No? So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. If I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, we would have to report it.

CALLER: You would?

CLINIC: Yeah. We’d have to report it to child services because you’re only 14 and you’re having intercourse and you’re having sex with a 22-year-old. So we would have to report it.

CALLER: So I couldn’t come in for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can come in for a pregnancy test. But if they do anything else, then they’ll have to report it.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Laura.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Is it okay if I call you back then?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CLINIC: Fort Wayne Women’s Health.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: That is one of the services that we do, yes.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Our fee is $450.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

(pause)

CLINIC: No, you would need your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to — what if you couldn’t tell your parents?

CLINIC: Is there some reason why you can’t tell your parents?

CALLER: They’d be furious. I mean, I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: And they would be furious?

CALLER: Yeah. I don’t know what they would do, but they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: There is such a thing as a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: That is where you go in front of a judge and explain to him why you can’t tell your parents. And it needs to be a good reason, not ‘I’m uncomfortable talking about it.’ And quite frankly, a boyfriend of a woman your age, the judge will probably prosecute him.

CALLER: Why? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You’re a minor and he’s what, 20?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: It’s totally illegal for him to have sexual relations with you.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what shall I do then?

CLINIC: Go to your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: You have to go to your parents.

CALLER: But they don’t ever listen to me. I mean, they never understand anything.

CLINIC: And I would be hard-pressed to understand while my 14-year-old daughter was having sex with a 22-year-old man.

CALLER: Well, they know we’re going out. I mean, he works with my dad. But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: They’re going to have to, or you’re going to have to lie and tell them that it was somebody else.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test without my parents having to know, just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: And that was a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: The test is $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, when do you normally do those?

CLINIC: Before 4:30

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: I can see you today before 4:30.

CALLER: Well, could my boyfriend bring me? That’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: He can bring you, but please don’t bring him inside the building.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You could make an appointment and go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: You would have to take that up with them.

CALLER: Oh. But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. How late are you there until today?

CLINIC: I can see you before 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. Are you there tomorrow?

CLINIC: Yes, between 9:30 and 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Helen (?).

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay. Thanks.
