(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. You would have to contact the Champaign Planned Parenthood for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Certainly. Do you have a pen ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 217-359-8022, and you just ask for surgical services.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a real quick question?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: It’s just I’m scared because like, well my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion but —

CLINIC: That’s not true.

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he —

CLINIC: That is not true.

CALLER: — do that?

CLINIC: Illinois is one of the last states that does not require parental consent, so it doesn’t matter. They cannot and will not tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have absolutely nothing to worry about. I mean, of course you need somebody to take you. They advise that you have somebody to drive you home. So your boyfriend can take you, no problem. And your parents will never know. You do not have to worry about that. Your friend was wrong.

CALLER: Okay. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though? It’s just I’m scared because like my last period was like December 14, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you can come in here, but unless you have a medical card, the cost is $18.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay, well, you can come on in here. There’s no problem.

CALLER: When do you guys normally do them?

CLINIC: I’m here today until 4:00. I’m going to leave about 15 minutes at lunch. Otherwise, I’ll be here all day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can come in any time.

CALLER: What about tomorrow?

CLINIC: I’m only open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

CALLER: Oh, Okay.

CLINIC: You know? Just to let you know, you know the tests out at Walmart and drugstores are just as accurate as ours.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Where you just, you know, basically you just pee on the stick. They’re all very accurate now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you just want to go out to Walmart and grab one and pay $6 instead of $18, they are very accurate and you don’t have to use them just first thing in the morning. And as far as you, you know, are past when you were supposed to get your period, if it’s going to turn, it will probably turn positive right away with no mistake.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you are. As long as it’s been. So if you want to save yourself some money, I would just say, you know, go to Walmart and take a test.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out to be negative, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: You can make an appointment with me and set up. You know, you have to set up an appointment to be seen, you know, for an exam, and then we can get you started on birth control no problem.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: That’s how — you know, we look at it this way. If you’re old enough to have sex, you’re old enough, you know, to of course come in here and be covered so that this doesn’t happen.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because you are way too young for a child.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That would pose serious health risks at your age. You’re too young.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So anyway, you need to find out if you’re pregnant first and get that taken care of —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — before you come in here for birth control because we won’t see you if you’re pregnant in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So take a test and get your appointment scheduled in Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And then call me back when everything’s taken care of. You can even come for your — if you are pregnant and you do have the termination, you can come for your post-check here because I belong to Champaign.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So all’s you’d have to do is call me back and say, you know, I had a termination in Champaign, and I need a post-check, and then we’ll get you all squared away that way.

CALLER: Okay. So what’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Roxanne.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, and incidentally I also work in Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So anywhere you go you’re going to be stuck with me. So figure out what you want to do and call me back and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: American Women’s. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far in the pregnancy are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. One second.

(pause)

CLINIC: That would put you about eight, nine weeks pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. So how much would it be then?

CLINIC: How many times have you been pregnant prior to this one?

CALLER: Never.

CLINIC: And do you have health insurance or public aid?

CALLER: Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14. I’m 13 right now. But my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But if my boyfriend’s paying cash for everything, would he had to sign anything? Like he’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: You don’t have to use your parents’ insurance if you don’t want to. It will be $350.

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything –

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: – but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything or full out any forms?

CLINIC: You are the one who’s signing everything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, some people actually said that since he’s 22 that he’s too old for me. But would that be all right if he was there? It would be okay?

CLINIC: Actually, that’s irrelevant to us. I mean, you’re the patient. We just take you and that’s it.

CALLER: Oh. All right. I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that before everything and make sure?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just we don’t want to worry about this anymore?

CLINIC: Well, if you’re not pregnant — if it comes out negative, and if you haven’t had a period — then we will recommend for you to have a blood test to make sure that the hormonal level in your system is down. That would indicate a real negative test. If it’s high, then we say the pregnancy is too small for it to be detected in the urine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So when you’re here, we can schedule for a pap smear. That’s how you can get birth control pills, after you get a pap smear.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does all that cost?

CLINIC: 130 for the exam and pap.

CALLER: Should I get the blood test before that though?

CLINIC: Well, if you want to schedule for just the blood test, it’s $50.

CALLER: Okay. When do you guys do that?

CLINIC: Can you come in today for the blood test?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call him first, and then you tell me what days he’s available. And then I’ll see if those days match with our days that we are available, okay?

CALLER: Okay. But you’re sure nobody would have to know anything?

CLINIC: Right. You’re the patient, and everything is confidential. We have confidential services.

CALLER: Well, let me call him and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Kathy.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Accessed Health Center. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: That’s one of our services.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Was that normal?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you have insurance?

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. And he said he would pay for everything. But is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You have insurance, but it’s in your parents’ name.

CALLER: No. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. But you are a student. You are under your parents’ care and your parents have insurance. But you don’t want your parents to know. That’s what I’m trying to find out right now.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Do you have a school i.d. or a class schedule?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Are you working at all?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But my boyfriend said he’d pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine. I don’t care about him right now. I’m trying to worry about you.

CALLER: Okay. Why?

CLINIC: Why? Because you’re the one that’s getting it done; he’s not.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Between 6 and 12 weeks in gestation, that’s $390. If the ultra sound says that you are between 12.1 and 14 weeks, it’s $525.

CALLER: So where am I?

CLINIC: Well, you could be either place right now. You’re kind of in between. We won’t know until the ultra sound. Do you know your blood type?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you have MVP or a heart murmur?

CALLER: Not that I know of.

CLINIC: If you are RH negative, we have to give you a shot of Rhogam. And that happens every time that you are pregnant. And that will be an additional $50. The only other thing that would increase the fee is you can buy your medications from us. There are two that you have to start taking afterwards. One is called tetracycline, and that’s an antibiotic to keep infection away. The other one is called Methergine, and that will help make your uterus go back to its normal size, and it also helps control your bleeding a little bit. And we charge 24 for both of them.

CALLER: Well, me and boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No. You’re the one’s doing the surgery

CALLER: So his name wouldn’t have to be on anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. He was just kind of worried about that. But I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do one of those before you get started with —

CLINIC: You need to do one before you come in. Because it’s not even worth coming in if you’re not pregnant. You can stop in and do one here if you want to, but it’s not worth making an appointment until you know that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost to get a pregnancy test where you’re at?

CLINIC: It’s free.

CALLER: Really? Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You have to have a full exam and all of that. We don’t just give out birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for the exam?

CLINIC: Approximately $120.

CALLER: And after that I could get birth control, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you’re sure that no one has to know anything about any of this?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. All right. I just have so many questions, and I’m just really worried. But if I thought of anything else to ask, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, my name is Jody. But anybody that answers the phone will be able to answer any of your questions about termination.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Because that’s what we’re all suppose to know.

CALLER: Do you know if I got a pregnancy test at a store, would that be as good as the one you guys do or is yours better?

CLINIC: Only if you use your first morning urine, which means you have to do it the first thing when you get up in the morning. And what that first morning urine means is that anytime from the time that you go to bed to the first time that you wake up. So for any reason you woke up in the middle of the night and had to use the bathroom, that’s your first morning urine.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So that’s the one that’s the most concentrated, and that’s going to give you your best result. If you use one of the home tests, you have to read the test at the time that they tell you to. Because sometimes if you let them sit too long, it can go from negative to positive. Don’t know why. So you need to read it at the time that the test tells you to read it at.

CALLER: Oh. It just sounds like it would be easier to go to you guys for that. When do you normally do that, the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We’re open everyday, except for Sunday.

CALLER: What are your hours?

CLINIC: Do you have an idea when you’ll be coming? Because they’re different everyday.

CALLER: Oh. It will probably be like the morning on Saturday I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come between 10 and 2.

CALLER: On Saturday?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Alright. Do I need to —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: No, you do not need to make an appointment. You just come in anytime between 10 and 2 on Saturday.

CALLER: Do I need to bring my first morning urine for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And try not to drink tons of fluids before you get here, because you don’t want your urine too diluted.

CALLER: All right. So I can come in this Saturday?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then if it is a positive test, then we can possibly go ahead and get you scheduled for an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This Sherry.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do it here, but we have a Planned Parenthood in Champagne that does.

CALLER: Well, do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Let’s see here. It is 217-359-8022.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just i’m scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care whatever that is so that no one has to know about it?

CLINIC: I really don’t know. Since we don’t do that here, I’m really not up on the rules.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’d just give them a call, and they’ll be sure and answer your question up there.

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test. Do you guys do that there? It’s just I’m scared that I’m pregnant because my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we do pregnancy tests here. If you’re not a patient here though it’s $18 —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — unless you have a medical card.

CALLER: Well, no, I don’t.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re here from 9 to 1 today, 9 to 1 tomorrow. So you can come in at anytime if you want.

CALLER: He said that he would pay for everything and take care of everything.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. And he was 22, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you was what?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Yeah, that’s no problem if you want to come in and do that.

CALLER: So it’s all right? I want him to be there with me. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. So 9 to 1 tomorrow?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant after I did the pregnancy test, do you guys have birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. But before we could hand out birth control, Erica has to do an exam to see which type would be better for you. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, how soon could I get birth control after the exam?

CLINIC: Well, once she sees you. Are you going on pills or depo shot? Just pills?

CALLER: I don’t know what the difference is.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we’ve got fact sheets. If you come in and do a pregnancy test, we can give you fact sheets. You can take them home and read up on them. Meanwhile, we can go ahead and set you up an appointment if you want to, and you can already have the fact sheets read before you come in for your appointment.

CALLER: Well, could my boyfriend pick up the pills or whatever? Because I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, that’s no problem. After you do the exam and everything, and Erica decides what kind of birth control you want, we have you fill out a paper of who you’d like to have come pick them up if you can’t. You’d just put him on your list, and there shouldn’t be a problem.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about any of this?

CLINIC: No, no, no. It’s very confidential. We don’t even have to call you. You could put on your paper no call, no mail, no nothing, and that’s no problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you want to get started with the pregnancy test for now, you can come in anytime.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I’ll call him up and then make an appointment.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: The Hope Clinic. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Hold on just a moment, ma’am.

(pause)

RECORDING: At Hope Clinic we take extra care to ensure that your total experience is a positive one. You’ll receive lots of personal attention from our warm and caring staff. Our beautiful new building has a soothing, comfortable atmosphere. We provide abortion care at its finest.

The fee for an abortion at Hope Clinic includes an ultra sound, lab work, individual counseling, antibiotics to prevent infection, aroma therapy to aid relaxation, and medication for effective pain relief. Thank you for holding. We’ll be right with you.

Women and their doctors have counted on Hope Clinic for high —

CLINIC: Okay. Did you have some questions, hon?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling to see about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. How far along are you, hon?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure, but my last period was January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. I need you to have a pregnancy test before you call us, hon.

CALLER: So I do I come in there for that or?

CLINIC: You call us back to schedule your appointment.

CALLER: But where do I get a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Go to Walgreen’s to have one done, a hospital. You just need to confirm that you’re pregnant, hon.

CALLER: So the ones in the store are usually right though?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Go to Walgreens and get an EPT and just call us back, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Hold on just a second.

(pause)

CLINIC: From 4 to 11 weeks of pregnancy —

(Talking to someone else: I just need you to sign this blue sheet for me, hon. Oh, it’s hard for you to do it.)

CLINIC: From 4 to 11 weeks, it’s $365 for the surgical abortion and an additional $30 if you’re a negative blood type.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is that I’m really worried because I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We’re not going to tell anybody. There’s no parental consent in the state of Illinois and there’s no age.

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything in cash. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: Well, when you schedule your appointment, hon, we’re going to ask you for your address and your phone number and your Social Security number and stuff like that, but it’s strictly confidential. It doesn’t ever leave this office.

CALLER: Oh. So there’s nothing that he has to fill out?

CLINIC: There’s nothing that he has to fill out at all. But you do need to have your payment for a money order, Master Card or Visa.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And when did you say that your last period was, sweetie?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Is that when you started?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me tell you just about how far along you might be. Is it March 7th?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It looks like right now you’re probably almost nine weeks, sweetie. So from 4 to 11 weeks, they’re $365. It’s an additional $30 if you’re a negative blood type. If you wait any longer from 12 to 13 weeks, the fee goes up to $490 and an additional $75 if you’re a negative blood type.

CALLER: After the pregnancy test that I take, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control? It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, you need to go to your OB/GYN for that, hon.

CALLER: Oh. So you guys don’t do birth control there?

CLINIC: No, we only do birth control for the patients. Like if you were a patient and you had a procedure done, we would get you started on your first pack of birth control pills, and then it would be up to you to go to your doctor or whatever to continue. So if you’re not going to come to the clinic for a procedure, then you need to go to your regular doctor.

CALLER: All right. I just wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name’s Becky.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right, hon?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

(Phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: This is Michele. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Here in Lincoln? No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that might?

CLINIC: Are you here in Lincoln?

CALLER: Well, I’m in Atlanta.

CLINIC: You’re in Atlanta. Probably the closest place would be in Peoria.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like that information?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on here and let me pull my folder. The name of the place is National Health Care. And their telephone number is 1-800-322-1622. And do you have any idea how far along you are?

CALLER: No, I don’t know. My last period was like December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. They start at $350.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would take care of everything so.

CLINIC: If you’re interested, I do have a pamphlet that has like a map on it as to how to get there. It kind of tells you a little bit about what to expect and stuff. If you’re interested in coming in for that, you can let me know.

CALLER: Well, could I come in for a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Sure. Are you a Planned Parenthood patient?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you can just walk in to the Health Department and have it done. We do it on a walk-in basis from 7:30 to 4:30, and there’s a $10 charge.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just scared, because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion –

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: – but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. No, we don’t have to tell anybody. And even though you’re only 14, it’s not required by law for them to release that information to your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You know, in fact if I were you, with him being 22 and you being 14, I would probably try to keep that pretty quiet.

CALLER: Okay. So don’t just —

CLINIC: Yeah, because of the age difference. I would not even bring that up to anybody, like when you go have the abortion. Because at age 14 I believe you are considered — you can sign for yourself to have it done.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’ve got something here in writing. It says, “The records of any minor who receives an abortion remain confidential from disclosure to a parent so long as the minor was entitled under state law to receive the abortion without parental consent.” And you are allowed to receive an abortion without parental consent. So according to the law they cannot release that information to your parents, okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right — I want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that okay if he’s there?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s no problem with him there. But unless they say something about your age or something, I would not even bring that up to them. Just go in there assuming that you’re allowed to sign for everything and just kind of go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Are you interested in this information at all?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you know when you’d be coming in?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. But he was wondering if after I get the pregnancy test, if it was negative, could we get on birth control real quick?

CLINIC: First of all, you do need to make an appointment and come in and have a complete physical exam and a pap. And right now we’re booking appointments probably about two weeks from now. That might be about the soonest that I could get you in.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know about any of this at all?

CLINIC: No, no. Uh-uh, uh-uh. Do you want me to leave this pamphlet up front or do you want to ask for it when you come in? What do you want to do?

CALLER: I’ll just ask for it when I come in.

CLINIC: Okay. That’ll be fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
