CLINIC: Planned Parenthood in Fairview Heights.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But I can give you the phone number to the clinics that do. There’s Hope Clinic in Granite* City, and there’s the Planned Parenthood in St. Louis that does it. Do you want both numbers or one or the other?

CALLER: Just both I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. The Planned Parenthood in St. Louis, that number is 1-800-419-0301. And then Hope Clinic is 618-451-5722.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they’re going to have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of everything, and they won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: I’m not real sure. You’ll have to call both clinics and find out what their policy is. I think one of them you might be okay, but I’m not real sure what the laws are in Missouri and Illinois, which one is the one that you need parental consent. So just give them a call and let them know your age, and find out if you will need —

CALLER: Well, I’m scared, because my last period was December 14th. I’m not really sure if I’m pregnant, but do you guys do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: We do a pregnancy test for you. That’s $10, and you can walk in and do that. But if you want to just find out for information — you don’t have to give them your name. Just say, look, I’m 13. Or you’re turning 13?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March. Just tell them you’re 13, you’re turning 14 in March. And ask them if you’re going to need permission or not.

CALLER: Well, I really want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Oh, that’s fine. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. He’s just worried that you guys would have to say something about him. Would you have to say anything?

CLINIC: About what?

CALLER: About him being with me?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents don’t like him at all. They think he’s too old for me. They don’t know we’re having sex. And if they found out, they would totally flip out.

CLINIC: Everything is confidential here and at both of those clinics. So none of that information is going to be released, unless you do need a procedure and if it is the law that they need your parents’ consent, well, that’s going to be between you guys. But if it doesn’t require their permission, then nothing will be released to anyone.

CALLER: If after I take the pregnancy test there, it was negative, do you guys have birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, uh-huh.

CALLER: Because I just don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah, yeah. If it comes up negative, we can make an appointment for you as a new patient, and you can come in and get birth control.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential. And as a matter of fact, you can come in on a teen clinic day.

CALLER: When is that?

CLINIC: I think March 18th is the next one. But will happen is if your test is negative, we can make an appointment for you to come in on teen clinic, and then you won’t have to pay for your exam or your birth control for one year.

CALLER: Well, could I come and take a test earlier than that?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You can come and take a test whenever you want. You can walk in. We’re open until 1:30 today, okay? And if you’re going to come in today, you need to come in before noon.

CALLER: Well, what about tomorrow?

CLINIC: Tomorrow you can come in between 8 and 12, and 1 and 4.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And as long as it comes up negative, then let them know you’re interested in becoming a patient, and we’ll make you an appointment for teen clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sonya, and I’m here just about everyday except some Saturdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: Peoria and Champagne are the only ones that do.

CALLER: Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Champagne is 217-259-8022. Peoria is 309-691-9073.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to be told. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: He’s not your legal guardian though. That’s the only problem. Do your parents know?

CALLER: No, not at all. I don’t know what would happen if they found out. That’s why they can’t know.

CLINIC: Do they know about him?

CALLER: Yeah. They know him. They just don’t really like him at all.

CLINIC: Because of the age difference?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, there’s really nothing he can do because he’s an illegal guardian.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do my parents have to know though?

CLINIC: Well, that’s kind of a question for them at the clinic. I would call and talk to them. To be honest with you, at your age I don’t really know — I want to say — hang on a second and let me double check.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: As far as I know, they don’t. But call and talk to them about it and stuff.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m scared. My last period was December 14th, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Did you take a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s the place you have to start. I mean, you can’t go down assuming your pregnant; you have to know for sure if you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can. They’re $20.

CALLER: And you don’t have to tell anybody I’m in there for that?

CLINIC: No, no. No, we don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: I wanted to bring my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could you guys do birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about this ever again?

CLINIC: We can. The problem is you have to an exam and everything, and we wouldn’t be able to do that at the same time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Could you guys come in on Monday?

CALLER: I’d have to call and see if he could. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I’m there for an exam or anything?

CLINIC: No. No, we don’t. There’s no way we can tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So call him, find out what his schedule is, and then call us back.

CALLER: Okay. If I was on birth control, could he come and pick up the pills? I can’t drive. I don’t have any way to get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. He can do that. You’re not working I take it?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What we can do too is we have funds available through the state that can help cover the cost of your exam and stuff. Because, obviously, you and him aren’t living together yet, are you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. I didn’t think so. Yeah. Basically, then that would help cover. So don’t worry about the money aspect; we can work with that. But first of all we need to figure out if you’re pregnant. If you’re not, we definitely need to get you on birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Christy.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Karen.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Do you want that department?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Just a moment.

(pause)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. How may I help you, ma’am?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering how much an abortion would cost?

CLINIC: Okay. From four to eight weeks that would be $335.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: The first day of your last period?

CALLER: I think it was like maybe December 14th.

CLINIC: December 14th?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Just a minute. December 14th. Tomorrow you will be 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that will be $425.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Oh, no. Honey, no. We don’t even tell your boyfriend that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s between you and our facility.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, no, no. That’s a no-no. Yeah. No, no, That’s a no-no. Nobody’s going to know. If your dad call and say, oh, I think my daughter has an appointment with you guys; can you please tell me what time is it? And I say, well, I don’t know if she have an appointment with us. But if she has an appointment and she wants to know what time, she can call me back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, honey. We don’t do that. We have a lot of teens over here, 15, even 14 years old here, as the patients. And uh-uh, that’s a no-no. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Fourteen?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And do you have the money?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: You have a medical card, sweetie?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You don’t?

CALLER: Uh-uh.

CLINIC: So you want to set up an appointment for tomorrow?

CALLER: Well, I have to call him and see when he can get off work. But what time tomorrow?

CLINIC: Okay. Because the quickest you get out of that, honey, that’s the best. I can give you one at 10:00. What’s the best time for you?

CALLER: I don’t know really. I’d have to call him and see when he can get off work because that’s the only way I’d be able to get there. Could you pencil me in for 10:00, and if I can’t be there, you could erase it?

CLINIC: Well, why you don’t go ahead and call your boyfriend? And then you call me back. And then we set up appointment because I have to ask you a few questions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So tell him that it will probably be $425.

CALLER: But you sure you don’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, honey, trust me (laughing). This is a serious facility.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I don’t have to tell anybody.

CALLER: Do you guys do a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: No, nobody going to know. This is very, very confidential. You can even hide if you want in this facility.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If you guys do a pregnancy test there and I wasn’t pregnant, could I get on birth control right away?

CLINIC: Yes, sweetie. And after the procedure, we can give you the Depo shot. Have you ever heard about the depo, Depo-Provera?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Depo-Provera is a shot that you take every three months so your parents don’t have to know that you’re taking pills. Because you know sometimes mom check the doors and everything, and kid is school, they look around. You can go for the shot every three months.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So my boyfriend and I could keep having sex with that and not have to worry about anything?

CLINIC: Yes. But you have to come the day — the due date for your next shot. What we can do is —

CALLER: But it’s all right he drives me and he’s there with me?

CLINIC: I’m sorry, sweetie?

CALLER: It’s all right if he drives me and he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. He’s gonna stay with you in the waiting room but not in the surgical room.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So I’m just going to wait for your phone call back. But talk to him, and I will set up a spot for you at 10:00. But you have to tell me and set up an appointment. I’m just going to hold this spot for you.

CALLER: Okay. So what’s your name? So I can call you back.

CLINIC: Mary.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, sweetie?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Don’t worry about the confidential because it’s 100 percent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, sweetheart?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome.
