CLINIC: North (in) Health.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It depends how far along you are and your blood type.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Well, when was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January what?

CALLER: 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. One moment.

(pause)

CLINIC: Was it normal?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. You did a pregnancy test, right?

CALLER: Well, not yet.

CLINIC: You haven’t?

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period in a while, and I’m just scared.

CLINIC: So you didn’t have it February nor March?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay, I would do a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: You can’t (unclear). They have no one to run it. I can put it in the refrigerator and call back in the morning. They’ve just left. We can do that, and they are free. But I would have to have you call back in the morning if you did that. Alright?

CALLER: Well, could I just come in tomorrow then?

CLINIC: Tomorrow you can come in 9 to 4 to do that. Have you been under a lot of stress or anything or a different atmosphere?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was getting an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, right now, they went to court on Monday about that. Our administrator has not told us a word about it. Evidently, I’m not sure that that law went through yet. She hasn’t told us that you do need consent. Right now you do not need a parent’s consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And she will be here tomorrow also. But she would have told us right away if it was into effect, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And she hasn’t told us anything. So I’m sure it’s not in effect yet. Sometimes it takes like 15 days or something like that for it to pass anyway. So you look like you’re fine.

But first of all, you do need to start with a pregnancy test, and then we can go from there. And it would be $305 to $340 for that, depending on your blood type. But at first start with a pregnancy test, because a lot of things keep you from having your period.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Are you on the pill or anything?

CALLER: No. Like I was wondering, we were wanting to get that if I wasn’t pregnant or afterwards.

CLINIC: That’s fine. We do do physicals and give out birth control and things like that. So what you can do, if you want to come in in the morning, they are free. Just walk in before 4, and they’d be happy to do a pregnancy test on you. And then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: The thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But he was just worried that he would have to — we don’t want anyone to know about us.

CLINIC: We don’t tell anybody. We’re very confidential. The thing is — and my director will be here to verify that you don’t need a consent right now. I mean, we had some people come in this weekend, and we have not been told to tell them that they have to have a parental consent. So my thing is that it’s not passed yet. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Like I said, sometimes it takes days for that to go through anyway, if it is passed. So apparently it hasn’t gone through yet. And sometimes it takes two and three court dates, you know?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So right now it looks as though you don’t need it. Okay?

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: But we’ll have more information for you on that tomorrow if you want to come in.

CALLER: So if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, I could get birth control, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Tomorrow? That one too, no. We don’t have to tell anybody for birth control. That’s for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: You guys are open tomorrow from when?

CLINIC: From 9 to 5, but you have to get here before 4:00 for that pregnancy test.

CALLER: Do I need an appointment for that?

CLINIC: No, you don’t. You walk in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, of I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name’s Beverly.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: I’ll be here tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. This is Cynthia.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we sure don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Yes, I sure do. Hang on just a second, and I’ll give you the numbers.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: You can call the North Florida Women’s Health and Counseling.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That number is 877-3183.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And Dr. Charles Cooper’s office does it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: 877-7106.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I ask a couple questions? Like I’m just scared. I don’t know. But like my friend told me that you guys have to know — you guys have to tell my parents and stuff. Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Like do my parents have to know?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t — we don’t do the abortions here, and if we did they wouldn’t know. But I don’t know what to tell you on that because you’ll have to call one of those numbers I gave you and ask them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you — ask them if you can be anonymous.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Would they ask anything about my boyfriend or anything? Because he said he was going to take care of everything because he’s 22, and he’s going to take care of everything, but would they have to know anything about him?

CLINIC: I wouldn’t think so.

CALLER: Okay. So it would be all right if he paid for everything, but they wouldn’t say anything about him?

CLINIC: They shouldn’t. I mean, like I said, you can call and ask them.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend actually just gave me your number because she went there. But is it okay if I had like a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can have a pregnancy test here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: To confirm it if you’re not sure.

CALLER: Okay. Yeah. Well, I don’t know. But is it okay like to have a pregnancy test and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: Okay. Like after the —

CLINIC: You’re the only one that we would only talk to, and that’s it.

CALLER: Okay. If it ended up after the pregnancy test that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I’m on birth control?

CLINIC: Right. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if my boyfriend picks up the pills or whatever?

CLINIC: Yeah, as long as you leave his name.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye.

CLINIC: Tampa (unclear) Women’s Health Center. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Do you know when your last menstrual period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. One moment, please.

CALLER: All right.

RECORDING: — make the best choice you can. (music) There are other places you could go for an abortion, maybe even some that are less expensive or closer to where you live. But there is no place that will give you more care and attention to you as a whole person.

CLINIC: Ma’am, it will be $350.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: What happened now?

CALLER: My friend said that since I’m going to be 14 later on this month, that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So your boyfriend, he’s not your legal guardian, so he would do no good.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But you don’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You just come in for the appointment. Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand just to see if I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had one of those yet.

CLINIC: They always do a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. You would have to have a pap smear in order to have that done though.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It’s $70.

CALLER: Could I get it done all the same day?

CLINIC: No, you wouldn’t. Depending on what your status is. First you just need to come in and take a pregnancy test and go from there. And they’re $10.

CALLER: Oh, okay. When do you normally do them?

CLINIC: We do them everyday, Monday through Saturday actually.

CALLER: So you just walk in?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What time on Saturday do you do it?

CLINIC: We’re open from 8 to 2 on that day. I mean, we see patients up to 2:00. So if we’re still here at that time, then you can come on in. We schedule up to 2:00, but you don’t have to make an appointment for that. You can just walk in, okay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend works from 8 to 5, so that’s the thing. He was wanting me to call to see what your hours are so that he could get time off work.

CLINIC: Like I said, we schedule up to 2:00 on Saturday, but whenever we get done with the last patient is when we close. So I can’t tell you how long we’ll be open on Saturday. It’d be best to come in the morning somewhere between 8 and 2.

CALLER: Okay. I just have so many questions. If I —

CLINIC: But once you came in that day, they can go over any questions that you may have.

CALLER: If I needed to call you to ask you something real quick, would that be all right? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call you and ask you? What was your name?

CLINIC: One moment.

RECORDING: — no place that would give you more care and attention to you as a whole person. Isn’t this time difficult enough without having to worry about comfort, safety and quality? You deserve the best of care. While we direct your call, we would like to tell you more about our facility.

CLINIC: Okay, ma’am. What was your question again?

CALLER: I was just wondering if I could call and ask you any other questions?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can call and speak with anybody. They’d be able to answer your questions.

CALLER: It’s just you’ve been really nice. I’d just rather talk to you.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Well, I’m not always here. My name is Tiffany. But if you want to call back, you can call.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CLINIC: This is Sherry. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do it in our Sarasota office. We refer everybody down there.

CALLER: Okay. Well do you know — like my friend told me that you guys have to — well like since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But can I just have my boyfriend do it because he’s 22?

CLINIC: I wish you hadn’t told me that. Don’t —

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Be extremely careful about discussing that because that’s not considered a very um, um, good combination, a 14-year-old with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: What do you mean? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: You don’t need — just let me explain — you don’t need your parents’ permission to get this done. You can proceed with the procedure without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Okay. But I can’t say anything about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: I would avoid it if I were you.

CALLER: Oh. How come?

CLINIC: I would just avoid it if I were you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you need a local number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 977-6176.

CALLER: Okay. Like, if my boyfriend has to take me, are they going to ask him any questions?

CLINIC: I would see no reason for him to go.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: Okay. I would just — you would not need to include him in any of the counseling or anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But could you — you won’t tell anybody about this?

CLINIC: I don’t even know who you are.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So I mean, you just call them and make your appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Not here, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’d have to look in the yellow pages of the phone book.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? That will help you. They have the listings there of who does them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask a few questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well like my friend said that since like I’ll be 14 in March you guys have to tell my parents. But I can’t tell them. Is it all right like if my boyfriend signs it because he’s 22?

CLINIC: As far as the abortion goes?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You know what? I don’t know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I think it’s confidential, but I’m not sure. You’d have to call one of the clinics that does them. What we do here, we can do a pregnancy test and then you know give you a list of places you could go, but you know other than that I can’t give out a lot of information because we’re — it’s a legal thing. We’re not supposed to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I believe that it’s confidential anyway, and I’m not sure what exactly the age limit is on that, so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And how old is he?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, I would call some place that does them and see what they say.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if I come in to take the pregnancy test do you guys have to tell anybody that I’m doing that?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. That’s confidential. It would be $5 to get the pregnancy test done.

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me —

CLINIC: Certainly.

CALLER: — and takes care of that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him or anything?

CLINIC: Not at all. Not at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’re here — again, we’re closing for lunch. We’re here at 2:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to come in this afternoon?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see, but he was also wondering if we could get birth control.

CLINIC: You sure can. Yep. You can — you know, well first find out about the pregnancy test, and then we’ll tell you all about Teen Time when you come in. But yeah, you can get birth control too. Are you sure you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, not really, but.

CLINIC: Okay. Alright. Well, we’re here until 6:00 tonight.

CALLER: Okay. But you’re sure you wont’ tell any about this?

CLINIC: No. Nope. It’s completely confidential, okay?
