CLINIC: Dr. Waterman’s office. This is Beth.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Were you referred by anyone?

CALLER: Yeah. I talked to the Planned Parenthood, and they gave me this number.

CLINIC: Okay. It would be $400. That has to be paid in cash at the time of the procedure. Somebody has to come with you to drive.

CALLER: Alright. Well, my boyfriend said he would bring me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: My main question is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he was wanting to take care of everything. But he would pay for everything in cash. And we just don’t want anyone to know. Would you have to tell my parents or anybody if he was taking care of it all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: You’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. What was the date of your last period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: You had one in January?

CALLER: Right. That’s when my last one started.

CLINIC: So right now you’re about eight weeks.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I don’t think I have any openings until
next week.

CALLER: Would that be all right?

CLINIC: You’re still okay, yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that there just to make sure beforehand?

CLINIC: No, we don’t normally. I mean, you haven’t taken one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do that first.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where shall I go to get one?

CLINIC: You can just get one of the ones over the counter.

CALLER: Oh. Are those usually right?

CLINIC: They’re pretty accurate.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Alright. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys. It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.

CLINIC: Right. Well, to be honest, because you’re going to have to pay for everything, you might want to go through Planned Parenthood. They have a teen program.

CALLER: Would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: So find out first if you’re pregnant.

CALLER: And then call you back?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Well, when do you normally have your appointments and stuff?

CLINIC: What do you mean? We’re a regular doctor’s office so… But as I said, I won’t have anything until, I know, at least next week.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend would have to take off work to bring me, so I need to tell him.

CLINIC: We could give you enough time so that he could get the time off.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Oh, hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: When did you want to come in?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. But I have a couple of questions first. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: He can come here if he’s going to take responsible for you, and he could bring a picture i.d., and like I say, he’ll be responsible for you.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about him? It’s just we were talking about all this, and we don’t —

CLINIC: Whatever you do here is confidential.

CALLER: Really? Okay.

CLINIC: You said you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th of this month.

CLINIC: How old is your boyfriend?

CALLER: Twenty-two.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: And that’s all right?

CLINIC: If he’s willing to take full charge of you when you walk in, he’s the one that’s going to be responsible for you.

CALLER: Yeah, he said that he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: When did you want to come in?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. Could I get a pregnancy test first just to make sure?

CLINIC: We run a pregnancy test on everybody that walks in here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. When do you normally have your appointments?

CLINIC: Monday through Saturday.

CALLER: What time on Saturday?

CLINIC: Saturday starting at 8:00.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Sure. The visit would be 80; pap smear would be 50.

CALLER: Okay. Would I be able to get the birth control the same day?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. I need to call him and see if we can come out on Saturday. But what was your name to call back?

CLINIC: You can call anybody and speak here and make an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just I would rather talk to you because you’re nice. Could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Tina.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: That’s not true. What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: No, you don’t have to have a parent, not in the state of Florida.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he’s 22. He could sign for whatever it is. But if he was signing for everything, would anyone have to know about him?

CLINIC: No, you don’t need (unclear) come with you. You want to come today?

CALLER: Oh, okay. When do you guys do the pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday from 9 to 4; Saturday, 9 to 5. So if you want to come anytime before 4 today, then you can do that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see when he can get off work to take me. But if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: With the birth control, it’s included with the termination fee.

CALLER: Oh, well if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: For a test you can just come in anytime.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CALLER: So let me call my boyfriend. Are you sure that no one has to know anything if I came in?

CLINIC: No, patients’ records is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So just give me a call back after you call him.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Willie Mae. And then you can also talk to Cindy. You’ll feel comfortable talking to her.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you can’t get me, just talk to Cindy though. She’ll always have a good answer for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right? So call us back.

CALLER: Okay, thank you.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Between 6 up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, it’s $375.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: We do an ultra sound on everybody. What’s the first date of your last normal period, ma’am?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: I can tell you approximately how far you are. Hold on.

(short pause)

CLINIC: Was that a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Right now you’re about eight weeks pregnant. And with the three medications you can fill them at our pharmacy here. It’s discounted. That would be a total of 405.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I was actually wanting to ask — my friend told me that since I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, she said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No, that’s not —

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Be quiet and listen to me a minute. There is no law. You don’t have to tell your parents anything. Don’t believe what other people tell you.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is it okay if he —

CLINIC: You’re the patient. You do not have to be any certain age.

CALLER: Well, is it okay if he pays for everything though?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. You bring him with you.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you want to set up a time or you want to call me back?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. But I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that beforehand just to make sure.

CLINIC: We’ll do an ultra sound on you. Don’t do a pregnancy. We’ll take care of it.

CALLER: Well, when do you have appointments available?

CLINIC: This week I have Thursday and Friday opened in the morning at 8:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend and see. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Not at that time. But we can get you set up with an ultra sound. If you’re not pregnant, then we’ll put you in our Family Planning clinic; it’s at a different time. And then we can get you on birth control.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: All right. If I had any other questions, could I call and ask you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can talk to anybody who’s here, honey.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right.

FORT MEYERS, FL 33919-5191

TAPE – 226

(Dialing sound) (Ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at this location but I can give you some phone numbers.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Our Sarasota office is going to be your least expensive option, and then there’s a couple places locally that we recommend.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want all the numbers?

CALLER: Just the Sarasota one, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s 941-953-4060.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And mention that you’re referred from Planned Parenthood down here because they do give you a bit of a travel discount.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure, if I can answer it for you.

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents, but can my boyfriend do it? Because he’s 22.

CLINIC: No. Florida is a non-parental-consent state, which means you can access services without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Okay. So like would my boyfriend have to sign anything or anything?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. You have a right to privacy from 12 years old on, so it’s all kind of all up to you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does anybody have to know about him or —

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: So — well like is it okay to come in there for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Have you done one at home?

CALLER: Well, I — yeah, I did one over the weekend, but I wasn’t sure if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. Did it come up positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, then you probably did it right.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: When was your last period? Do you know?

CALLER: It was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. So maybe around the 15th?

CALLER: Yeah, like the 12th I think.

CLINIC: Okay. If it started on the 12th then right now you would be right around 10 weeks, and you have up until 14 weeks, so you’re probably going to need to do it pretty soon if that’s what you want to do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did I give you their phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Then just, like I said, don’t forget to mention that you’re referred from here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Say that I came in to you guys to get just make sure I got a pregnancy test just like a second opinion but say that I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. We do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Okay. No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right like if my boyfriend came and picked them up?

CLINIC: Picked up what?

CALLER: Like the birth control?

CLINIC: You would need to have an exam first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you would get them while you’re here for your exam. We have a teen clinic on Tuesdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It starts at 3:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: During that time your exam is just $10.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And then your birth control is free for you until you’re 18.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I talk to my boyfriend and he had another question that I didn’t think of can I talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Carrie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
