CLINIC: Bread and Roses. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do. How many weeks are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: Do you know the last period that you had?

CALLER: Yeah. It was January 3rd.

CLINIC: January the 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let’s see. Okay. By that date, January the 3rd — and today we’re at March the 6th — that should make you about nine weeks. It’s from six to eleven-and-a-half weeks it’s $350. Are you a student or receiving any kind of government assistance?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s $350. And that basically includes the ultra sound, your lab work, sedative, anesthesia, and also a follow-up exam. And we do surgery on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.

CALLER: My main question is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You don’t have to have any consent here in the state of Florida. The only thing you would have to basically sign — and when you come in, you’re just under the age of 18. But otherwise we don’t ask for identification, but we just have you to sign that. And you don’t have to bring a note or get your parents’ permission or notarized or nothing like that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: The state of Florida doesn’t have that kind of law.

CALLER: We were talking, and we decided that- well, he said he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t. If he’s going to come and be the person that’s going to be here with you and drive you home, he doesn’t have to fill out anything. You would just have to do your medical history, just filling out something. And you basically talk to the counselor. The counselor will go over the medical history and also what takes place in the surgery, how to take care of yourself when you go home, and how to take your medicines, and then have you to come back within three or four weeks. And then you see the nurse or the doctor and just basically do an exam and make sure that everything’s fine. And that’s it.

CALLER: Another thing is, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah, but we normally try to do the pregnancy test actually before you make the appointment for the abortion.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Are you in Gainesville?

CALLER: I’m in Newberry.

CLINIC: Newberry? Okay. I’m not familiar with that. It’s close to here?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If you didn’t make it today, you could come in tomorrow between 2 and 5. And there is no charge for the test. Or you can come Friday between 9 to 12:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. When you come in we need to just ask you the first day of your last period, and you tell us. And then we get the urine sample, and we run the test. And then at that time you can go ahead and make your appointment if you want to come in. But no, you don’t have to tell anybody, and we don’t have to tell anybody because everything is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, but you would have to make an appointment to come and see our nurse practitioner. And she would do like a pap smear on you to make sure that you don’t have any abnormal cells. And then from there we can prescribe pills for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is I can’t drive to pick up the pills. Will my boyfriend be able to get them?

CLINIC: What you mean? Get what, the pills?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: When you have the pap smear and everything, they give you a prescription. If not, we call it into whatever pharmacy that you use. And you basically go to the pharmacy and pick them up, okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But first you probably want to just make sure that you’re not pregnant before you think about that. And then when you come and have your abortion, they also talk to you about birth control pills. And they also go ahead and give you like a month supply to get you started after you have the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. But are you sure that no one would have to know that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, unless you just want to tell somebody. But otherwise, no. Like I said, everything is basically confidentiality. And then when you come, like I said, you do your paperwork and everything, and everything is held right here. And once again, if your boyfriend’s a certain age, that’s his age. You don’t have to reveal that to anybody. Because we don’t know — not that we don’t care, but you don’t have to tell us that. That’s none of our business.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, I’m just really confused and have a lot of questions. Could I call you back if I thought of anything else to ask? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yeah. I’m Pat. What’s your name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is (Alexis?). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But we give referrals. I can give you the numbers to a couple of clinics.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hang on just a second. Thanks.

(music)

CLINIC: Okay, can I give you those numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The first one is for Bread and Roses.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 372-1664. The second one, All Women’s, 378-9191.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like do you guys like — my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: We don’t do abortions. I really don’t know the policies of the other places. You’d have to give them a call and ask.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, do you know if there’s like a specific age or anything? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. I don’t know. I mean, you’d really need to talk with the people who perform them. We just give referrals, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Go ahead and give them a call and ask them all those questions.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you guys do like the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We do, yes.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that?

CLINIC: No. And they’re $5 if you’re in high school.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if my boyfriend brings me and pays for it?

CLINIC: If he what?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: If he does what?

CALLER: If he brings me and pays for it because he said he was going to take care of everything because he’s 22. So.

CLINIC: If he pays for it? Is that what you said?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Of course. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. He just said he was going to take care of everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, like after the — would you — you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him or anything, would you?

CLINIC: No. Um-um.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like say that I wasn’t pregnant after you guys do the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: We do, but you’d have to have an annual exam with us first or with somebody else first in order to start getting your birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? If you have any more questions, I’m going to have to put you on hold for just a second because I need to answer somebody else’s questions on the other line.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Thanks.

CLINIC: Medical Office. Michele speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions here.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Do you know where you’re at in the pregnancy?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know when your last menstrual cycle was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: If we go by January 3rd, that’s going to put you approximately nine weeks into the pregnancy by date.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Could you hold on just one moment?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Rachel?

CALLER: I’m not Rachel.

CLINIC: Oh, I’m sorry.

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Hi. Let’s see. You went by January 3rd, about nine weeks into the pregnancy by date. The fees can range anywhere from $215 to 375. And that depends on the anesthesia that you would choose to go with. And usually that’s just a personal choice of how comfortable you want to be for the procedure.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, you don’t. You don’t have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Really? Okay. The thing is, we were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms? We just don’t want anybody to know about us.

CLINIC: No. You wouldn’t have to fill anything out. Basically, they’ll have you fill out some medical history, but that’s about it.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: All right. Well, I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that before just to make sure?

CLINIC: Basically — you’re late on the period?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Are you having signs and symptoms of pregnancy?

CALLER: Not that I know of.

CLINIC: Would I would recommend is maybe stopping in and doing a urine pregnancy test before you go through the anguish of making the appointment for the procedure. It’s $5 for the urine pregnancy test. It takes about five minutes. At that point, if it’s positive, and you still want to make an appointment for the termination, we can go ahead and make the appointment at that point.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Exactly. If you were not pregnant, we could make an appointment for you to come in. You need to come in for a full exam. You have to be on a period to start birth control. So they’d make sure that there’s nothing else going on, probably give you something to bring down a period, and then you’d be able to start the birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does all that cost?

CLINIC: That would be $80 with the nurse practitioner.

CALLER: If I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really? I’m just worried about — okay. I need to talk to my boyfriend to see when he can bring me in. But when do you normally do the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Anytime. We’re here today until about 4:30. Tomorrow we’re here 8:30 to 4:30; Friday 9 to 4. And you just come in. You don’t need an appointment.

CALLER: Do you have any Saturday hours?

CLINIC: We are here Saturday. We open at 8. And we usually close when we’re all done with patients. And that’s basically right around 10:30, 11:00.

CALLER: So I could come in Saturday morning then?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need an appointment for that?

CLINIC: Not for the urine pregnancy test, no.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I came in on a Saturday, could I get birth control that same day if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: No. We’d have to make an appointment with our nurse practitioner. And the next available appointment there would be Monday afternoon.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. I’ll just call you back when I talk to my boyfriend. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s quite all right.

CALLER: Okay. And you were Michele?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you — like my friend told me that you guys have to know like how old I am and stuff like that. Like is that true or —

CLINIC: We just have to go over some quick information with you, and you can make an appointment. You don’t need your parents’ consent or signature, anything like that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, she also said you guys have to know like how old my boyfriend is. Like he’s 22, but —

CLINIC: No, we don’t need to know. Only personal information we need is yours. We don’t deal with anybody else.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: So is that all okay?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Is that okay?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. I mean, as long as you understand everything and you can handle this maturely, then that’s fine. As long as you can pay for it then you’ll be okay.

CALLER: Yeah, my boyfriend said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Oh, so he’s going to pay for it? Okay. Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see when he can get off work, but —

CLINIC: Okay. We’re going to be setting appointments. We’re setting appointments for this Friday.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And for the following Saturday, so call us back. And we’re going to do Friday. We’re going to start, we take patients from 1;30 to 3:00. But right now we’ve only got 2:30, 2:45 open.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then next Saturday we’re going to see patients from 7:30 to 9:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like do you guys do the pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, but…

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s all we really need. We can do one here once you get here, but it’s not a necessity if you already took one at home.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried that I didn’t do it right. I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay, well, we can do one here when you get here. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So talk to him and then give us a call back, okay?

CALLER: Okay. But like you guys don’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: No, no, no. There’s nobody that we need to tell.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We don’t have to tell anybody else.

CALLER: And it’s all right like if my boyfriend brings me and you guys don’t have to know anything about him?

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, when he brings you he’s going to bring you, he’s going to sit into the waiting room. He can help you fill out your paperwork, and then that’s it. We don’t need his information. All we need to know is his name. That way when you’re ready to go, we can pop our head out in the waiting room and say if his name is Josh, hey Josh, she’s ready. Go to the back. I mean, that’s it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. And you guys don’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: No. We won’t call your parents. We won’t call your house, your insurance company, your teacher, your grandmother. Nobody has to know. Only people that will know is if you tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, say that you guys did do another pregnancy test there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do, but you have to make an appointment to come back and get on pills.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t — is it all right if like my boyfriend picks up the pills?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, that’s fine, but as long as you have your pap smear first and if you need to get pills then he can come pick them up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?
