CLINIC: Upland. This is Pat. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. San Bernardino does.
CALLER: Oh. Do you have that number?
CLINIC: Sure I do. Are you ready?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: 909-890-5511. How far along are you?
CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December.
CLINIC: Ohh. Okay. Do you know a date?
CALLER: It was probably like third I guess.
CLINIC: The third of December. And we are in February. Yeah. Try to call them up and set up an appointment right away.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like my friend told me you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?
CLINIC: Not that I know of, no. Uh-uh. Is this something you heard on —
CALLER: Like I’m almost 14. I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Is it something that she heard or something, or what?
CALLER: Well, she’s just — yeah.
CLINIC: How old is she?
CALLER: She’s 14.
CLINIC: 14, oh. Not that I know of. I’ve never heard that, so.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all because like, well my boyfriend’s 22, and like —
CLINIC: Uh-huh. How old is he?
CALLER: Huh?
CLINIC: How old is he?
CALLER: He’s 22.
CLINIC: Okay. And it was with your consent and all that?
CALLER: Yeah. Yeah. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: You’re going to get married. The only thing I don’t know. They still have to report it because you’re underage but not —
CALLER: Why?
CLINIC: — not to your parents.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Not to your parents.
CALLER: Well, who else would they report it to?
CLINIC: I think the state. They report it to the state because you’re underage, but that’s something that you were willing to have you know, intercourse.
CALLER: So why would they have to tell anyone?
CLINIC: Well, that’s what I’m saying. It’s a procedure that they would have to do. But I don’t know if San Bernardino would do that because some places do that.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: You know? So that’s what I’m saying. When you call them up, let them know, you know, that you’re interested in terminating the pregnancy and that you want to know if you need your parents’ consent or not.
CALLER: I just — well, he won’t get in trouble or anything will he?
CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: No. Just let them know, you know, what you want to do, and you ask them if they do need parents consent. I haven’t heard that people do need that, you know.
CALLER: Should I just not tell them about my boyfriend, or —
CLINIC: Well, they’re going to ask you because they’re going to ask you a couple questions and all that to see. They’re going to ask you, you know, a couple questions. It’s a form that we have to fill out, you know, about when your period, how old you are and your birthdays and all that, with emergency contact, you know emergency everything you know.
CALLER: What does the state do?
CLINIC: They just keep it in file I believe. They won’t — I don’t think they do anything.
CALLER: So like my parents wouldn’t find out or anything?
CLINIC: Not that I know of. No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But they’re going to ask you questions, so it’s best to answer, you know, honest and everything you know.
CALLER: Okay. Well, like, so you don’t think anybody would have to know?
CLINIC: No. That’s what I’m saying.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Ask them before you do.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if like I wasn’t pregnant do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. But would you guys have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential. That’s what I’m saying — everything’s confidential, even abortions are confidential.
CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back if I think of anything else?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Pat.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: Is that your name?
CALLER: Huh?
CLINIC: Is that your name?
CALLER: My name is Christine.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Because you said, oh okay, so I thought your name was Pat too.
CALLER: No. That would be cool though.
CLINIC: I know. Just call me back.
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Talk to you later. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Vellejo Planned Parenthood. This is Angie. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes. Every Thursday.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: We start at 3:45 and they go up to 7:45.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like, um, if I could come in for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Yeah. Those are just drop-in basis. You don’t need an appointment. We do them between 9 and 11, and 1 and 4.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just really worried about all this because like my friend told me like — I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is it all right if he takes care of all that, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You can take care of it all yourself.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Your boyfriend can’t do anything for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if he was — he’s going to pay for everything, but we were talking about it, and he said that he didn’t want us to — well, we decided that we didn’t want anyone to find out about us. So would you have to ask him anything if he’s paying for it?
CLINIC: You don’t want him, you don’t want anybody to find out about you two because of the age?
CALLER: I don’t know. We just don’t —
CLINIC: Well, for one, you’re 13 years old?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. He’s 20-what?
CALLER: 22.
CLINIC: 22? There will be a report reported.
CALLER: Oh. Well, who would it be reported to? What do you mean?
CLINIC: To the police.
CALLER: Well, why?
CLINIC: Because he’s an adult and you’re a minor.
CALLER: Well, so?
CLINIC: Well, that’s the law, hon. That’s just how it would go.
CALLER: Well —
CLINIC: Anywhere that you go, they’re going to ask you the age of your partner.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yep.
CALLER: Oh. Well, so if I go anywhere they’ll arrest my boyfriend, or he’s going to jail?
CLINIC: I mean — no, I’m not saying that he’ll be arrested, but there will be a report, it’s a reportable thing. You are a minor. He is an adult.
CALLER: Well, if he wasn’t there, would that be better then?
CLINIC: Either way it’s going to be reported because of your age.
CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. But I’m just worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.
CLINIC: Yeah. You do need to take a pregnancy test though, because if you don’t take a pregnancy test and you don’t — you wait until too long, then you’re going to have a baby.
CALLER: Yeah? Well, so, but I couldn’t come in there for a pregnancy test without getting in trouble?
CLINIC: Now I’m not saying that you’re going to get in trouble, hon. That’s not what I’m saying. It’s a mandatory report when a minor is with an adult. You guys are consensually having sex. You’re okay with it, but it’s still reportable. It doesn’t mean that you guys are going to get in trouble for it. But the thing is, is he’s 23 years old and you’re only 13.
CALLER: Well, he’s only 22.
CLINIC: He’s an adult. He’s over 20. He’s over 18.
CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do? I’m just scared. I don’t know what to do. And I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, if they found out I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: In terms of what to do of what? What is it that you’re worried about?
CALLER: Everything. I mean, could I come in and get a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Yes. You can come in and get a pregnancy test, yes, but he has nothing to do with the pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You need to do it. He’s not taking the pregnancy test. You are.
CALLER: But are you going to tell anybody?
CLINIC: We do everything confidential here, but I just explained to you what would happen. You come in, you’re 13, it’s mandatory we have to report it that you are having sex because of your age. That’s what I’m saying. I mean, everything else is confidential, but it’s the law that we have to report it. Anywhere else it’s going to be reported too.
CALLER: Even if I wasn’t pregnant you would still have to report it?
CLINIC: It’s — okay.
CALLER: They get their pregnancy test —
CLINIC: It doesn’t have anything to do with you being pregnant or not. You’re a minor having sex with an adult.
CALLER: Okay. But if I didn’t like — if I didn’t tell you guys that when I came in, how would you know?
CLINIC: That’s not even you. You’re not going to get away with it anyways because of your age. You’re 13 years old. You’re having sex.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: There’s no way of getting over it. Where somebody’s going to ask you about your sexual partner.
CALLER: Really? Okay. Well, I just — I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet. And, but I just haven’t had a period since like December 21st, and I’m scared. So if I wasn’t pregnant, could I like, like if I got like a pregnancy test over the counter or whatever, are those usually right?
CLINIC: I mean, they — some can be.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if that one said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: As long as — you know, it just depends on the paperwork. I mean, you know, you’re a minor having sex. I just explained that to you.
CALLER: Okay. All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: I’m just really scared and I don’t know what to do. Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you?
CLINIC: Of course. My name is Angie.
CALLER: All right, thanks.
CLINIC: All right.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC (MALE): Good morning. You’ve reached the Poppa (sp) and TKO (sp) Program. How may I help you?
CALLER: Where is this?
CLINIC: This is Community and Education Services Program of Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh, okay. I was wanted to ask somebody some questions about getting an abortion.
CLINIC: Okay. If you want very specific answers about cost and procedure, okay, you might want to call the clinic and then they’ll answer your questions. But if you want general answers, then — go ahead.
CALLER: Well, do you know, like I’m just worried about it because like, well I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?
CLINIC: Okay. All services relating to pregnancy or sexuality are confidential.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: And by law they are not required to tell anyone you don’t give them permission to tell.
CALLER: Oh, okay. So —
CLINIC: That is the law.
CALLER: So nobody would have to know about anything?
CLINIC: Exactly. And if you’re concerned about billing or whatever, there’s programs —
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.
CLINIC: Okay. That’s good. That’s good. Yeah, so, um, you know, how old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: I see. Yeah. No, you’re okay. I mean, it’s against the law for them to go off and tell anybody about, you know, your pregnancy or your abortion if you choose to get one.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Now here’s some other questions I guess that obviously come up. I don’t know if you’ve already had counseling on this, but have you tested for any kind of sexually transmitted diseases?
CALLER: No, I haven’t had any tests at all. I’m just really scared about everything because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m just really worried.
CLINIC: Okay. Could you hold on a second?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, thank you. So I’ll go ahead and give Montoya that note. I don’t expect him in anytime soon. But if he calls or when he calls I’ll go ahead and relay the message that you left him a note. Okay? You’re welcome.
I’m sorry about that. Okay, so, you haven’t had any tests. Do you know absolutely certainly that you’re pregnant?
CALLER: Well, no. I’m just — I haven’t had my period in awhile and I’m scared.
CLINIC: Right. Well, you’re 14, and a lot of times, you know, not having your period can be something else. It could just be your hormones adjusting or it could be another issue entirely. Now, my recommendation to you would be to go ahead and set up an appointment for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that though?
CLINIC: Oh, no. That’s all confidential. In fact, you wouldn’t even have to pay for the test.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Is it all right if he’s there with me?
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about all this, and we don’t really want anyone to know everything about us.
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: So would you have to ask any questions about him or anything?
CLINIC: Well, not about him. I mean, you’re the one with the appointment, right?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. So we’re not really concerned about him. You know. We’re more concerned with you and your health.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So it’s more important that you go in and get seen and — because, I mean, if it is a case that you’re pregnant, right?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: That means that you’re about three months pregnant, right?
CALLER: I guess.
CLINIC: And time is running out for you to actually get an abortion. The longer you wait the more costly it is and the more difficult it becomes. And if you wait too long, then it becomes illegal to even have one after a certain amount of time.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah. So you don’t want to wait too long. In fact, I would recommend that you call as soon as possible, make an appointment and find out for sure.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if the pregnancy test said that I wasn’t pregnant if I could get birth control? I just don’t want to have to worry about all this again.
CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. See, the thing is, when you go and let’s say that you go for the pregnancy test, what they’ll do is, they’ll sign you up for a program because I think you would qualify. You want the service to be confidential and you’re not employed and you don’t have insurance, and you’re 14.
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: So you would most likely qualify for the program. 99.99 percent. Okay. Now, under that program you’re entitled to have a card, and with that card you could get free, I was going to say prophylactics but you may not know what that is. Free birth control methods.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Now it doesn’t cover all birth control methods. It just covers some. But it includes things like condoms and I think even the pill to some degree depending on which one.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So, and that’s — I think. It’s been updated as of the beginning of this year, and I haven’t had the training yet. So it might be a little bit different. But I know for a fact that you could get tests done, chlamydia tests and other things. And, you know, they could even do that off the same urine sample that you give them if you wanted them too for the pregnancy test. And then the only thing is that if you are found to be pregnant, that program wouldn’t cover the expenses of the test or any subsequent prenatal care. You would have to qualify for other programs, or your boyfriend could pay for it.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And then of course, you know, I would recommend that you get screened for STDs.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you back? What was your name?
CLINIC: Sure. My name is Arthur.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And I’m up here at the Poppa Program. That’s at Vallejo High School. And just out of curiosity, not — you know, I don’t want to know your specific name or anything, but if you should call back, just tell, you know, just say you’re Minnie from Minnie Mouse and you’re calling for Arthur. But what school do you go to school?
CALLER: I’m actually home-schooled. So.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah. I was just wondering because I’m at the different high schools in the area on certain periods of times, so you might even be able to address me in person.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But since you’re home-schooled, you’d probably have to wind up coming to the high school for that.
CALLER: Oh, okay, so I could come up to the school and talk to you?
CLINIC: Yeah. In fact, I’ll be at what’s called the Student Health Center today, tomorrow, and Thursday during the lunch period here which is from 11:52 to 12:32.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So I think today though I may have a client coming in, but tomorrow. Now, keep in mind, don’t wait until you talk to me to get the pregnancy test and all that taken care of. And they will pretty much answer any other questions that you have also. But if you did find it necessary to come back and talk to me, I’m available for that. Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Okay, Minnie Mouse. Well, it was nice meeting you. (laughs)
CALLER: Nice meeting you.
CLINIC: And good luck.
CALLER: Thanks. Bye.
CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Yes, you can. Did you want to come in today?
CALLER: Well, yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
CALLER: I just, he just got it and I don’t know the number yet. Is it all right if I call you back?
CLINIC: Just make sure you have two different phone numbers, because you’re going to have to fill something out when you come in so you just need to have two different phone numbers.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Everything’s confidential, so we wouldn’t be calling your parents or anything.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about this at all?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if like I was on birth control, would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills because I can’t drive.
CLINIC: No. You’d have to come in and get them yourself.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? What we can do, if the test comes out negative we can start you on birth control today.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if I think think of anything else could I call you back? What was your name?
