CLINIC: Family Planning Associates (unclear) speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well how much does cost for that?

CLINIC: If you are within the first trimester it is $350.

CALLER: How do you know which trimester you are?

CLINIC: It’s done in 13.5 weeks.

CALLER: My last period was like January 3.

CLINIC: January 3? Okay. Right now it’s March. Okay, you’re within 9 weeks right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: According to that date that you gave me.

CALLER: Yeah. So how much would it cost then?

CLINIC: $350.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — it’s just, the thing is I’m going to be 14 like later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents if I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know what?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: When is it you’re turning 14?

CALLER: On the 19th.

CLINIC: Of this month?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Let me see. Hold on, okay? March. Is he paying cash?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay, by then you’ll be like 11, between 11 and 12 weeks. Is he taking you here, or —

CALLER: Yeah. He’d be the only way I could get there.

(pause)

CALLER: Is that all right?

CLINIC: If you came, if you paid cash you can give any age you want.

CALLER: Okay. And then that way you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Exactly.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, would you guys like do a pregnancy test beforehand or — it’s just I haven’t taken one yet.

CLINIC: We do that, and if we have to do ultrasound we will also.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But is there any way do you think that I’m not pregnant though?

CLINIC: I think you are pregnant. If you haven’t get your period. If you want to come in and get a pregnancy test, it’s free.

CALLER: Okay. For free?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. When do you guys normally do that?

CLINIC: Well, you can come in any time from 8:30 to 4:30.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have any other day? It’s just, my boyfriend is at work today.

CLINIC: It’s Monday through Friday.

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: So, well if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We do, but we recommend you go to the public health clinics because they give you for free.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we charge.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Even in school. At school?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If you’re in school you can ask for birth control or to recommend you to one of those clinics.

CALLER: Oh okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So if I had any other questions, could I call and ask for you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Lupe.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Thanks for calling Planned Parenthood of Ventura. This is Isabella. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know if you have to be like — well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend told me you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay, when you come in for services here all our services are confidential. We wouldn’t need to include your parents or your boyfriend.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my boyfriend — we were all talking about this and he said that he would pay for everything, but would he have to —

CLINIC: That’s fine, but he doesn’t — he has no involvement. I mean, you’ll be the patient.

CALLER: Okay. How much is it going to cost?

CLINIC: It runs anywhere from $350 to $475.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, the thing is I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and that’s the main reason why I’m wondering about all this.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can come in for a pregnancy test on Tuesday between 4 and 6 and they’ll explain, they’ll do a pregnancy test and then explain your options and if you decide to terminate they’ll explain the procedure to you.

CALLER: Okay. So if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant I could get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But not on that time slot. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So why don’t you come in between 4 and 6, and then if everything’s good then we can make you an appointment for that same week to come in for birth control.

CALLER: Okay. But would anyone have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: All information is confidential. The only way they would know is if they went through your stuff. They call us, we can’t say anything.

CALLER: Okay. You want me to come in at 4?

CLINIC: It’s best if you come in at 4.

CALLER: Okay. I have to call my boyfriend to see, but is it all right if he comes with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. I wouldn’t have any other way to get there. All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: All right then. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Walnut Creek. This is Joan. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, it costs $345.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hold on a minute. (recording: — appointments for pregnancy testing and for all other clinic services)

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have Kaiser or Medical?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything. It’s just, the thing is I’m really worried about doing all this because like, well, I haven’t had a period since like December 21st, and I’m just really scared. And my friend told me that like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March. And she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22, and he wanted to take care of everything. Would you have to tell anybody if he did everything?

CLINIC: Uhh — hold on a minute.

(recording and music)

CLINIC: Okay. So what was the first — did you have, have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for awhile, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. What you need to do is to take a pregnancy test, okay?

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You either need to take a home pregnancy test, or you can come in here and take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: I’d rather come in there.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in today between, come in around from 1 to 4 today, or you can come in tomorrow and have a pregnancy test, and we can give you the results.

CALLER: What time tomorrow?

CLINIC: You can come in about the same time, 1 to 4.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Depends on your income. Do you have any income at all?

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay, and —

CALLER: But my boyfriend does.

CLINIC: Well, but you can qualify for state funding.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? Why don’t you come in? We can have you fill out the papers that you would qualify for state funding, and it would be a no-charge to you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about us. So would you guys have to ask questions about him or anything?

CLINIC: It depends. So what you need to do is find out first if you’re pregnant, okay? That’s the big thing. So come in and get your pregnancy test, okay?

CALLER: But he would be the only way I could get there. Would it be all right if he was there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: I mean, would you guys have to ask questions about him if he was there though?

CLINIC: We may. It’s okay. Just why don’t you just come in, and we’ll work with — we’ll get this all worked out. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can, but you couldn’t get it the same day. You’d have to make another appointment, okay?

CALLER: Oh. Well, would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I’m just really worried and —

CLINIC: Well, you need to come in and get a pregnancy test first, okay? Then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Bye.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: This is Rosie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do them at the Santa Christ Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yes. It is it for yourself, or —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Did you want to come in for a pregnancy test first?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you want to do it here or at Santa Cruz?

CALLER: I’d rather do it there where you’re at.

CLINIC: Okay, and then we can go ahead and refer you to the Santa Cruz location for the procedure, okay?

CALLER: All right. It’s just, the thing is I’m just really scared about this because I haven’t had my period since I was, since like December 21st.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: And I’m worried because like well, my friend told me since like I’m going to be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know what? That’s kind of (pause) — I don’t know. What I would have to do is schedule the appointment for the pregnancy test and then you can go ahead and talk to the medical assistant when you come in.

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents that I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Hold on, please.

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Have you been to Planned Parenthood before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Was this regarding a pregnancy test and abortion, or —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What I can do is —

CALLER: Are you Rosie?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I had to put you on hold just to talk to the nurse. But I can schedule you an appointment for tomorrow.

CALLER: What time tomorrow?

CLINIC: 12:15.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I guess they’ll go ahead and talk to you, like a consult visit. And your parents won’t find out about the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But there might be like maybe because of your boyfriend being over age —

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: You said he’s 22 years old?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So it depends on what the consult is that will be — I mean.

CALLER: I don’t understand what you mean.

CLINIC: Okay. Because your boyfriend is overage, they might have to (pause) talk to the doctor. There might be a problem with that.

CALLER: What kind of problem?

CLINIC: Hold on, please.

CLINIC: This is Annette. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah, hi. I was just talking to Rosie and she — I was wondering if — well, it’s just, the thing is, I was telling her that like my — I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: What’s your name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine? Okay. The problem, Christine, is, is legally if you’re 13 and he’s 22 it has to be reported because you’re very underage.

CALLER: Well, who would it be reported to?

CLINIC: It would be reported to the Child Protective Service.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: They would have to investigate it.

CALLER: Well, would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: My guess is, yes.

CALLER: Well, they can’t tell my parents. I mean, they can’t find out at all. I don’t know, I don’t know what to —

CLINIC: Okay, Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Christine, just take it easy. Okay? The reason those laws are in place are to protect kids.

CALLER: But he’s not hurting me or anything. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know. This is — it’s a consensual relationship and I understand that. I’m just telling you that we’re constrained by the laws. Now, what I would suggest that you do, either you come here or go somewhere else and have a pregnancy test and don’t say what his age is.

CALLER: They will? Or don’t say?

CLINIC: Don’t say how old he is.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And that way you can get into the system. I’m not even going to get involved. I don’t know what your last name is. But that’s all I can tell you.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: You can either come here, like you can walk in, not all the time. Sometimes you have to make appointments. You can go to the county. You can go —

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?

CLINIC: Oh, absolutely.

CALLER: It’s just, I don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s a good idea.

CALLER: But would you guys have to tell? Would you guys have to report it if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Only if you let us know how old he is.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, so, the only thing is, like he would have to come with me because I wouldn’t have any way to get there.

CLINIC: Okay. But he doesn’t have to come in the room with you. And we’re not going to ask him how — you know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If he has to bring you here, he can still stay in the waiting room anyway.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I don’t say anything it would be all okay?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well —

CLINIC: I just don’t want you — you know, I don’t want to scare you away. I’m just telling you what the laws are and why the laws are there.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: To protect you. You know, you could be forced into this relationship. You know, I hear from you that this is consensual and this is what you wanted to do. But there are a lot of kids your age who it is not a good relationship.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to be married, and we’re happy.

CLINIC: I know. That’s good. But see what I’m saying is that not all 13-year-olds are in that position.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You’re involved with somebody who’s over 18, you know, a lot of times they’re involved forcibly.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So this is, these are just the laws that are in place.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So just don’t say anything, and come in and get a pregnancy test and go from there, or —

CLINIC: Right. Right.

CALLER: Okay. But if I wasn’t pregnant could I be on birth control and you wouldn’t have to say anything about that?

CLINIC: No. We can put you on birth control without — yeah. They may ask you, are you in this, are you in a good relationship. And somebody may ask you how old he is, and you’re just going to have to decide what you’re going to say. Okay?

CALLER: What should I say?

CLINIC: (laughs) I’m not going to tell you, Christine.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I told you what the laws are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, like if — the only thing is, I can’t drive yet. I’m not old enough. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills though?

CLINIC: No. You’d have to come and — you know, what you should do is, you either make an appointment for a pregnancy test and if that’s negative then tell them that you want a HOPE which is hormone without a pelvic exam.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We do that here. If you go somewhere else you’d have to do something differently probably.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: But then if you are pregnant then they wouldn’t do the birth control, but they would refer you for an abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, after you do like the pregnancy test and after you do like the exam for birth control, could I have him pick them up, like the ones after everything?

CLINIC: No. If we put you on the pills, that same day you would get the pill.

CALLER: Well, I mean like the ones after I’m out of all the first ones.

CLINIC: Oh, a refill appointment?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: We only give you about three packs. No, you do need to come back because we need to see you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We need to do a blood pressure and make sure that you’re doing okay on the pills.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And there are other methods besides the pills too.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? There is — you know, there’s an injection that lasts for 13 weeks, about three months.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There is another injection that’s the same thing as the pills and it just lasts a month and you have your period.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, just as long as nobody has to know anything, so.

CLINIC: Right. I mean, some people or some teenagers like the injection because that way they have a period, and they don’t have to have the pills at home. So that if the mother is really looking she’ll see that you’re having your period and there aren’t any pills around. You just have to remember to come back about every 28 days.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to — well, you decide. You can either call back here or you can call somewhere else, but you work it out. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: But the sooner you do it the better.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: : Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
