CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. This is Mary. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: We do them up to three months, and that’s $350.

CALLER: Okay. How do you know how many months you are?

CLINIC: You have an exam when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. I just haven’t had my period since like January 3, and I’m just really worried, so.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You can do that first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, we do free testing here. You don’t need an appointment. You can come in any time between 8:00 and 4:30.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Any day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if it’s positive then we’ll go ahead and schedule that appointment for you.

CALLER: Okay. I was just really wondering like my main question is, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t sign anything. You would sign your own forms when you come in.

CALLER: Oh. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No. We don’t release any information on any of our patients that comes in.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Really? How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: You would have to have a pap smear, which is — and that’s $80. And then we would give you the first three months supplies of pills with that.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be — well me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and my boyfriend and I decided we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said he was going to pay for everything, so does he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: If he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He doesn’t have to sign anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Surgical Center. Sophia speaking. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Depending on how far along you are. Do you know the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: My last period was January 3.

CLINIC: Looks like you would be approximately about 8 weeks today. So the cost for that would be $600.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you’re less than 10 weeks the procedure is $600. If you’re over 10 weeks then it just depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

CALLER: Okay. I was just wondering — it’s just I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re 13 and he’s 21?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: 22? Okay, well, legally in California that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: What do you mean? I mean, he’s not raping me or anything.

CLINIC: I understand —

CALLER: We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I understand that, but you know, the legal laws in California would consider that, even though if it is consensual.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: That I’m not quite sure. You know, we wouldn’t — would probably have to do something with the police.

CALLER: The police?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Well, if they’re going to investigate this and then they might have to, you know, discuss it with your family members.

CALLER: Well, they can’t — well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Let me have you call the National Abortion Federation.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s 1-800-772-9100.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And you can tell them your situation and they can give you some resources.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: Sure. Hold on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(classical music)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. We can go ahead and see you for the pregnancy test, but if it does come out positive then we are going to have to file a report.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it came out negative could I get birth control?

CLINIC: No. We would have to have a pap smear on file.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that you have a normal pap smear because we’re not allowed to give any sort of sample unless we have an okay pap smear on your record.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant could I get that?

CLINIC: Could you get a birth control pill? No, because if we don’t have —

CALLER: Could I get like a pap smear thing?

CLINIC: We don’t do pap smears here. You would have to get that with your regular doctor.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But if I had that would you guys be able to do birth control?

CLINIC: Your pap smear on file?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Right, but we don’t do that unless we see you for the termination. We don’t just hand it out. You know, that’s something you would want to go through Planned Parenthood or something like that.

CALLER: Planned Parenthood?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: It really depends on what you decide to tell them, how much you let them know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I didn’t tell you about my boyfriend would I be able to get the abortion?

CLINIC: I know from right now if you were to give me too much information I wouldn’t be able to answer that. That’s — you know, if you want to have that done you would want to be a little bit more discreet about the information you give. But if they find out you’re not legal age then they will have to file a report to the state.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So even if my boyfriend wasn’t 22?

CLINIC: Even if he wasn’t — if you’re under 14 it is considered rape in the state of California.

CALLER: Okay. All right. So all aright. If I had any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sophia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: But I recommend you call that number. They have a lot of great resources for any information you need.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: The number for the National Abortion Federation? They know?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Anything else I can help you with?.

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay, then.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t, but we do them in Sacramento. I could give you the number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 916-446-6921.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried because like, well, my friend said that since I’m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Let me double check, okay? I’ll put you on hold.

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You don’t need parental consent for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to see?

CLINIC: Tomorrow between the hours 9:00 and 11:00 and 2:00 to 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would be the only one that could bring me. Would it be all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just, the thing is, we were talking about all this and we decided that we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would you have to ask him anything?

CLINIC: Let me put you on hold. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ok, I’m sorry. What were you saying?

CALLER: I was just wondering if you guys would have to ask my boyfriend any questions if he was there.

CLINIC: Ask him any questions? Do you not want him to know anything? Or —

CALLER: Well, he knows. I mean, we’ve been talking about it. But it’s just, we don’t want anyone to know — we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us because —

CLINIC: Okay. He doesn’t know anything and we don’t need to ask him anything. But because you guys — you know, the different ages? CPS might get involved.

CALLER: What is that? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: And how old is he?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. He’s 22, you’re 14. You’re still a minor.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: So because of that purpose, CPS might get involved due to your age difference. You’re still a minor. He’s already an adult.

CALLER: Oh. Well, who would have to call them?

CLINIC: Who is going to call them?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: By law — hold on. Let me put you on hold. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. (another clinic worker)

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You say you’re 14 and he’s 22?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March, yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, so if you come in most likely we will need to, you know, call CPS and make them aware of the situation.

CALLER: What situation? What do you mean?

CLINIC: The situation that he’s an adult and you’re a minor, and you’re having, you know, intercourse with him.

CALLER: Well, why is that bad?

CLINIC: Because you’re a minor.

CALLER: Well, but —

CLINIC: But under state regulations —

CALLER: He’s not hurting me or anything. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he was going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Yeah. But that’s the law. It’s the law. So if you come in and you tell us, you know, how old you are and how old he is, we have to report it to CPS.

CALLER: Well, what if I don’t tell you?

CLINIC: Well, if you don’t tell us then that will be on you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But if they do ask you and you do tell them, you know, just to let you know that CPS will be called.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But I just wanted to get a pregnancy test because I don’t know if I am pregnant. I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December.

CLINIC: Yeah? Yeah. Well, when you come in we can run a pregnancy test. But if they do ask you, you know, and you do tell them, we have to report it.

CALLER: Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, as long as you don’t tell us his age or anything then that should be fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this again. So.

CLINIC: Definitely. It’s just to let you know and make you aware that it is against the law, and by law we have to call CPS and let them know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Just to let you know. And then if you go anywhere else it will be the same situation.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: It’s state law.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant and I was on birth control pills from there, would he — it’s just, I don’t — I can’t drive yet. Would he be able to pick them up?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: It has to be you.

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, so, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Patty.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, they’re out of our Sacramento and Roselle (sp) Office.

CALLER: Oh, well, do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yes, I can give you the number. Sacramento is 916-446-6921.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, I’m just really worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 next month and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and —

CLINIC: No. No. You can do it on your own.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it matter anything about my boyfriend though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because he’s — we were talking about all this and he said that he would pay for everything. It’s just we don’t want my parents or anybody to find out about us. So would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: No. You can go do it on your own. You might not want to even get him involved, only because of the age.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But it’s really up to you what you want to do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I actually wanted to find out if I was actually pregnant. Like I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period for awhile, so.

CLINIC: Okay, well, you can come in for a pregnancy test tomorrow between 9:30 and 11:00 and 1:00 to 5:00. We can screen you for the pregnancy. If you are pregnant, we can give you your options. If you decide to go with termination we’ll give you information on it. If you decide to keep it, then we’ll give you other information.

CALLER: But you don’t think I should bring my boyfriend with me though?

CLINIC: You can if you want.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But it could be an issue. It’s really up to you.

CALLER: Okay. What kind of issue?

CLINIC: You’re 14 and he’s how old?

CALLER: 22.

CLINIC: Exactly.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep. We do.

CALLER: Just so that we don’t have to go through this all again.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Once you have a negative pregnancy test you can schedule an appointment to come in for birth control.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Everything here is confidential. You can come in and do this on your own.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just — I just have a lot of questions, and I’m confused. But if I thought of anything else could I call and talk to you? What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Annalee.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what time can I come in tomorrow for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Between 9:30 and 11:00 and 1:00 to 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But anybody here can be able to help you with anything you have, or when you come in for your pregnancy test the person that takes you back will be able to answer questions for you too.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how soon would I be able — like if the pregnancy test was negative, how soon could I get the birth control?

CLINIC: It really depends on how far we’re scheduling. Usually we can get them within a week. Give you condoms or something if you want to take with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.
