To speak to the receptionist or to make an appointment, please press 1. (dial sound)

One moment, please, while I transfer your call.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. This is Francis. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Modesto or Fresno.

CALLER: Well, do you have the number for that one?

CLINIC: Which one?

CALLER: The one in Fresno?

CLINIC: 559-233-8657.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried ’cause like, well, my friend told me that since like I’m going to be — well, I’ll be 14 in March — she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of whatever that is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Hold on a minute. (coughs and sneezes) Okay. You know what? No. I mean, I don’t know what they would have to do. Hold on. Let me ask my lab person, okay?

CALLER: Okay. (pause)

CLINIC: Okay. He can’t take care of anything. You’ll have to, okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But anyone knows, anyone in the medical field knows that you are sleeping with a 22-year-old — you’ll be 14?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That is statutory rape, and it will be reported.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he was going to take care of me for the rest of my life.

CLINIC: Well, I know, but — I mean, you’re only 13, and he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I mean, there’s not really — I mean. You can speak — you have the abortion, you know, without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Well, what would happen to him?

CLINIC: What do you mean?

CALLER: What would happen — would anything happen to my boyfriend? I mean, would you guys — you guys would have to report it?

CLINIC: What do you mean? We would have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, well, that’s what you said. Like what would happen?

CLINIC: What would happen? We’d just make, we’d just make a — let me have you speak to someone. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hello.

CALLER: Yes?

CLINIC: Okay. What’s going to happen — which ever way, whether you decide to keep this baby or have an abortion, there will be a CPS report made.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? That’s the Child Protective. Okay? Because of your age. Okay? Your boyfriend will be arrested.

CALLER: He’ll be arrested?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want him to be arrested.

CLINIC: Okay. I mean, whichever way, there’s going to be a report made when you have this baby, if you have an abortion, because of the age of his —

CALLER: Well, what if I came in and had a pregnancy test and it said that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Then there wouldn’t be no problem because we wouldn’t have to make a report.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s the first thing you have to do, okay? That’s the first thing. If you don’t know, you’re sure that you’re pregnant, if you don’t know for sure — come on in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, would you have to — would my boyfriend get in any trouble if he came in?

CLINIC: No, because we won’t even see him.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But first of all, before you even — I mean, they’re going to ask you that. If you’re going to have an abortion you have to have a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: All right? And we do those until 4:00. I mean, before you even start making appointments or talking to anybody else, it’s first it’s better that you make sure you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so if I was pregnant then what happens?

CLINIC: Well, that’s what I mean, different things. I mean, there’s going to be different things involved, you know.

CALLER: Oh. So if I came in and had a pregnancy test and you guys found out that I was pregnant, what would happen?

CLINIC: We’d give you your options. You can have an abortion, you can have the baby, you can, you know, put it up for adoption.

CALLER: Well, what about like, what about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend doesn’t matter in this. Your boyfriend does not matter.

CALLER: But you said it does.

CLINIC: Okay. No. I mean, for you. You know, to you, you know, but I mean, when you come in our main concern is our patient.

CALLER: Oh. All right. So if I don’t say anything about my boyfriend he won’t have to go to jail?

CLINIC: Not — I mean, I can’t tell you what to say. I cannot tell you what to say.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-um.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know — well, I’m not old enough to drive. You know, because I’m only 14. Well, I’ll be 14 in March. And would it be all right like if I was on birth control, would it be all right if my boyfriend picked up like the birth control pills or whatever?

CLINIC: You need to come in.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: You need to come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying. Our main concern is our patients. We don’t, you know, deal with the boyfriends, the husbands, anyone but our patients.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, I need to think about all this. But is it all right if I call you back if I thought of any other questions?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Francis.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. Helen. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much they cost?

CLINIC: 350 for surgery, and it’s 425 for the abortion pill.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month —

CLINIC: Fourteen weeks?

CALLER: Fourteen years old. My birthday is on the 19th. But my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell anybody. No, that is not correct. But we do have to report it to Child Protective Services for anybody that’s under 13.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: That’s a law.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way not to have to do that? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You’re under 13?

CALLER: Well, I’m 13 right now. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: And when did you want to do the procedure?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: Ma’am, from the age of 13, it would be reported. If you are 14 on March 19th, you might want to wait until you’re 14 to come in then.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Because at that point, it will not be reported.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything. Would that make any difference?

CLINIC: That makes it even worse if your boyfriend’s 22 and you’re 13.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Hold on, please.

(pause, music playing)

CLINIC: Just so you understand, legally, if you’re 13 years there’s something called statutory rape. It’s sexual assault. That’s what it’s considered.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he’s going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Would you listen to me, ma’am? I’ll just explain it to you. This is the legal law, a California law. It has nothing to do with us, or what we believe, or if you’re getting married or any of that. So legally we would have to report it to the authorities. That’s just so you understand, okay?

CALLER: So what can I do then?

CLINIC: At that point, they’ll come to your house. They’ll probably send a social worker to come investigate.

CALLER: What can I do so that they don’t do that?

CLINIC: You can’t, ma’am. If we know how old you are, then legally we have a responsibility to inform the Child Protective Services because you’re legally considered a child.

CALLER: But I’ll be 14 after the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. But still there’s an age difference; 14 and 22, ma’am, still falls into that range. Okay?

CALLER: So what shall I do then? I don’t know what to do?

CLINIC: Do you want to schedule for an abortion, ma’am? I would have to take information. When you come in, just be aware that they would have to send that through California state. So they’d probably send a social worker or somebody to your home, somebody assigned to you, ma’am, to check on you. And they possibly will press charges. It’s not going to be anything that you want to or not. The state can take that upon themselves to do that at that time. You can call an attorney if you’d like, get some legal advice. But other than that I can only tell you what we would do here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah. The test is free, ma’am. You can walk in at any time. Just no children are allowed.

CALLER: But would you have to tell people then if I was coming in for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Not for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: We’d have to schedule you for a pap smear. We could take care of that for you. Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: You can come in at any time. Why don’t you come in and take a test, and then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you promise you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Legally, I don’t have to tell anybody if you’re coming in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: What time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We’re here until 4:30.

CALLER: Everyday?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call you?

CLINIC: Of course.

CALLER: And what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Emily.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: We just don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Nobody would have to know. Only you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control could he pick up the pills? I can’t drive. I’m not old enough.

CLINIC: You’re the only one that can get them.

CALLER: Oh, okay. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Katie.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: If you’re under 13 weeks pregnant, it’s $370.

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. Trish. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was on hold, but my friend’s mom came in, and I had to hang up real quick.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to be right with you. You’re the next caller, so I’ll be right with you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You wanted to schedule an abortion?

CALLER: Well, I wanted to ask questions.

CLINIC: Okay. Go ahead.

CALLER: Well, I was asking how much it would be.

CLINIC: Okay. When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. You are probably somewhere around — January 3rd, somewhere right around nine weeks or so. So you’d be in that 370 range up until 13 weeks, until you’re over 13 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 next month. And my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you won’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: We don’t — no. You don’t need to bring your parents with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s not required.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if my boyfriend’s there?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: He is going to pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Well, were just talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Not if he’s paying with cash. I mean, if he’s paying with a credit card, he would.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you guys wouldn’t have to know anything about him?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. No.

CALLER: Okay. I really haven’t taken a pregnancy test since — I mean, I haven’t had one yet. I just haven’t had my period for a while, and I’m scared. Would you guys do a pregnancy test first?

CLINIC: Yeah. But if I were you, I would take a test first, just like a home test or whatever.

CALLER: All right. Those are usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah. And then if that’s positive, they call us and schedule the appointment.

CALLER: If it says that I’m not pregnant, could I come there for birth control?

CLINIC: If I were you, I’d go — well, yeah. You can. It’s $80 though. And you get three months worth of pills. And then after that, you’re going to have to pay at a pharmacy the price of birth control pills. So you can do that or you can go through — I think they have programs like Pacific County Clinic or on Planned Parenthood for teenagers.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, not at all. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: That’s fine. He won’t be able to go in the back with you, but he can sit with you in the lobby.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, but — so no one would have to know if I was on birth control, right?

CLINIC: No. Nobody would have to know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: They wouldn’t have to ask your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried. And I have a lot of questions I can’t think of right now. But could I call you back and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Teresa (sp). What you can do is, when you come in tomorrow —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: — you can ask them all the questions in the back.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And, because it will be more on a one-on-one. And it’s confidential. You’ll be in a room with somebody.
