(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Family Planning Associates. This is Diana? (unclear). Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Hold on a minute?

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost there?

CLINIC: The fee is 350.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anyone. Everything that we do here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. All right. We were talking about all this, and he said that he’s going to pay cash for everything. But we just don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Let me go ahead and transfer your call, okay?

CALLER: To who?

CLINIC: To the manager. Hold on.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering about getting an abortion?

CLINIC: For an appointment?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I was wanting to ask questions. I’m going to be 14 next month, or later on this month —

CLINIC: Fourteen years old?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: My friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell on me?

CLINIC: If you’re 13 years old, we would have to contact Department of Social Services.

CALLER: Who is that?

CLINIC: A social worker.

CALLER: Okay. Why?

CLINIC: Why? Because you’re 13 years old.

CALLER: Okay. Well, should I wait until I’m 14?

CLINIC: I can’t tell you what to do, but we would have to contact that department if you are 13 years old.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was January 3rd. That’s why I’m just really worried about all this.

CLINIC: Let’s say you are in your first trimester, which is six weeks, up to 13 weeks, counting from the first day of your last period —

CALLER: That was January 3rd.

CLINIC: And your periods are regular?

CALLER: Usually.

CLINIC: Usually?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Not all the time?

CALLER: Well, I’ve been late before but only like a week.

CLINIC: You already had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Thirteen weeks is April 4th. So once you’re over 13-and-a-half weeks pregnant, then it would be a two-day procedure. But as long as you’re between six and 13 weeks, it would only be a one day. So I’m not going to tell you to wait; you know what I mean?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll be 14 on March 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you want to wait until then, go ahead and do so, and then make your appointment.

CALLER: But would you have to report to the people there?

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So it would just be better to wait then?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t tell you what to do, but only if you don’t want your parents to know. I’m telling you that we would have to let them know if you’re 13 years old. Okay?

CALLER: So could I come in there for a pregnancy test though just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, you could.

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do those?

CLINIC: We’re doing them now. You could just walk in. We close at 4:30. So you might want to try to come in before then, okay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s got to get the time off work.

CLINIC: If not, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30. You could come in tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. First you would have to come for a pap smear, which is $80. And then we’ll give you a six-month supply of pills.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: If you were 13 (laughing)?

CALLER: If I was 13, they would have to know?

CLINIC: Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: If you were just coming in for a pap smear and birth control, then we wouldn’t report it.

CALLER: Okay. So it would be all right if my boyfriend was there with me, and you wouldn’t tell anybody about us or him or anything?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: It would be all right if my boyfriend was there with me? Because he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: He could wait for you in the lobby. But when you’re having a pap smear, no, he cannot be there with you. You know what I mean?

CALLER: But he can be in the lobby, and he can pay for everything?

CLINIC: He can wait for you there. Yeah.

CALLER: And he wouldn’t get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: No. That wouldn’t be a problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if it ended up that I was pregnant, I should call you after the 19th?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to report it then?

CLINIC: No, not if you’re 14.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions, could I call you before — I need to talk to my boyfriend and see exactly when he can get off work to take me.

CLINIC: Sure. But you might want to come in and get a test though. You can just walk in for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Ferthice. You can talk to anyone. It doesn’t matter. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Matt. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this location. This is the Community Affairs and Development Office. It’s not a medical center. I can give you the number to our medical center.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s 394-1691.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just really worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not sure exactly how they handle that other than that we do everything with confidentiality.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: But you know, as for the specific services and what you need to do to get those services you really need to talk to the medical center directly.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do they do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: I believe so, yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, like if I wasn’t pregnant, if they have birth control there?

CLINIC: I’m sure they do. Yes.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control you think?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not sure. I know that this, the office you’re talking to here is not a medical center, so we don’t have any of the information about what our protocols and procedures are for medical services. The medical center can fill you in on all that stuff. I mean, I know that we do have confidentiality.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you looking for some center on the Monterey Peninsula?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. That would be our Seaside Center. That’s the number I gave you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they’ll be able to help you out.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Hello. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, okay. That’s what I was calling about. Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. If you’re between 12 weeks and under, it’s $320 cash.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: You have to do a — what you do is you call, you make an appointment, and everything is done in one day if you’re 12 weeks and under. They do an ultra sound, they do pregnancy tests, they do everything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was January 3rd?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: So how do you know if you’re 12 weeks and under or not?

CLINIC: All it takes is if you’re pregnant (chuckle). Let me see.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. I just haven’t had my period in a long time, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: You haven’t had a period in a long time. Like how long?

CALLER: Well, since January 3rd.

CLINIC: January?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me see.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, no. There’s nothing to do — uh-uh, she’s wrong. Your friend is wrong, okay?

CALLER: All right. So you don’t have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No, no. In the state of California, the parents have no right. If you’re under age and you’re pregnant, and you want to have a termination or if you want to have the baby, it’s up to them. All right? That’s in the state of California. So your friend told you wrong that you’re suppose to tell your parents. No. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me see.

CALLER: The other thing was too, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this. And he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for everything?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. I said no, uh-uh. Nobody. Okay? You’re about I would say nine weeks. So you’d better hurry up and make an appointment. Because if you’re over 12 weeks it’s a two-day procedure, and it’s more money, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, when could I come in for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Why don’t you talk to your boyfriend and see what he’s going to do, okay, and if he’s going to pay for it.

CALLER: Well, he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. What city are you in?

CALLER: I’m in Marino Valley.

CLINIC: Do you want to come in tomorrow? I can schedule you an appointment for tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Well, what time?

CLINIC: At 9:30?

CALLER: Okay. Would you do the pregnancy test first, and then go from there?

CLINIC: No, no. They do everything there, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I need your full name.

CALLER: Well, I need to call him and see if that’s a good time for him, and then call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Just call me back. I’ll be here, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: We having a sliding scale. We see how much you make monthly. The lowest is $420. The highest is about $540.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m going to be 14 in March. I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: You’re 14 weeks?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 years old.

CLINIC: Oh, years old. Okay. How far are you in your pregnancy, do you know?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. Like I’m just scared because like I haven’t had my period in like a while. Like the last time I had it was December 21, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. First you need to make an appointment for an ultrasound.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you do have to pay for the ultrasound, which is $45.

CALLER: Okay. Well, since I’m 14, since I’m almost 14, would you have to tell my parents? My friend said that you would, but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Okay. This is really up to the clinician.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — didn’t have to say something, they would.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, who would they tell?

CLINIC: Well, there’s the police or your family. I’m not sure. It’s really up to them. They’re the one to take care of that, so.

CALLER: Okay. Well, why would they tell the police?

CLINIC: Because you’re underage.

CALLER: Well, but, I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re underage.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: Nothing. They just let your parents know what is going on.

CALLER: Well, what would happen if they talked to the police? Could I get in trouble?

CLINIC: Maybe not you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, who would get in trouble?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t really discuss this with you. It’s, I mean, like I say, they might say it, I don’t know. You will have to talk to them about it. I really can’t say stuff like that, and I’m just, you know —

CALLER: But if I came in there they would have to talk to the police?

CLINIC: They might. I’m not quite sure. I’m just saying they might.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: I mean, you could have an abortion and this is everything that is done here is confidential.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But, you know, it’s really up to you because I’m not sure what would they do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how would they find out about my boyfriend if everything’s confidential?

CLINIC: Well, there’s certain things that they can’t be confidential.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah, and that’s what this is.

CALLER: Well, would it be better if he didn’t come with me then?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. I’m really — I don’t know what you want to do, and I’m not sure exactly what would they do. I’m just saying that they might do that, which I’m not sure. I don’t know if they would.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy just to see if I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Yes. You can come in, drop in at any time, and they’ll tell you exactly how far are you, and they can you help you with more information.

CALLER: Well, do you know if anyone would have to know that I was there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Oh, no. No. Not. No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. Oh, yes. No problem with that either.

CALLER: Oh. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Like I say, it’s confidential. It’s just there are some things that you can’t say. But you can come in for that any time. It’s a drop-in basis, and somebody will see you for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, I need to call my boyfriend and talk to him — but could I call you back if I had anything else to ask? What was your name?

CLINIC: Hmm? Susan.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.
