CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Esther.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No. I can give you their number where they do.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: 214-373-1868.

CALLER: Well, do you know like if they would have to — Well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No. It would have to be a parent consent or a guardian.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to tell my parents? I mean, I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Do you have an aunt that might help you with that?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Not even an uncle?

CALLER: Uh-uh.

CLINIC: See, it’s got to be somebody that’s — because they’re going to ask for the driver’s license to make sure it’s family.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend has a driver’s license.

CLINIC: Yeah, but it’s got to be a family member.

CALLER: But I can’t tell anybody. I mean, there’s just my parents, and I can’t tell them at all. If they found out that me and my boyfriend were having sex, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Yeah. I don’t know. I’m sorry, sweetie. I sure don’t know what to tell you.

CALLER: Do you know if there’s any other place I could go?

CLINIC: Ohh. Have you called other centers?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Because see, if you come here, since you’re under 14, you would have to — they would even call the caseworker because you’re under 14.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because that’s the requirement.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So I would call a private one instead of us and see if you can ask information on that. Because I would do that first because we have to call — we even have to call the —

CALLER: Why would they have to call a caseworker?

CLINIC: Because you’re considered a way minor, under 14 is way. If you were like 14 that’s not, that’s nobody’s business, but under 14 —

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Well, if you want to wait until after March.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test? Like I’m just really scared because like my last period was December 21st, so.

CLINIC: And you haven’t had one since then?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: And you haven’t gave yourself a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No. I didn’t know what to do. But if I came in there for a pregnancy test, would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: Yeah, we would if you’re under 14. Yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: I’m sorry, ma’am?

CALLER: What could I do then? I don’t know what to do. I don’t want anybody to find out.

CLINIC: Okay. We can, you can go ahead and try calling the private center and see what they tell you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well —

CLINIC: Because I know as Planned Parenthood we do have to report it. But I don’t know if somebody else would have to.

CALLER: So I couldn’t come in and get birth control either?

CLINIC: No. Well, yeah, birth control you could.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Once you turn 14. Yeah.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We won’t have to tell anybody. But before then we would.

CALLER: So if I wanted to come in today, you would have to tell people?

CLINIC: Yeah. We would have to tell. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Hold on. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Uh-huh. I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: I’m so sorry, sweetie. That’s what we can do is you can come in after 14 or you can call in. Why don’t you try calling a private doctor and see what he tells you?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? A private abortion center, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Lisa. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: You do?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, it depends on far along you are. What was the first day of your last menstrual cycle?

CALLER: I think it was like December 21st.

CLINIC: Okay, then that would put you right now at almost 10 weeks into your pregnancy. If you go over 11 and a half it’s when our price change. So right now you would be $295. But over 11 1/2 weeks would put you at $325.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So our next available appointment day is this Thursday.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Did you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’m just really worried because like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Is he your legal guardian?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: So then the answer would be that either we tell your parents or you go for what’s called a judicial bypass. Now a judicial bypass can take a couple of weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But by state laws, your boyfriend is committing what’s called statutory rape.

CALLER: What is that? I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. I understand. I understand. But anybody who is an adult, a legal adult, should not be having intercourse with a child, which is what you are legally.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You’re not even out of teenage status yet.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: What could happen is, is that your parents could press charges and he could serve some jail time.

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only one that’s there for me. I don’t — he can’t —

CLINIC: I’m not saying that he will. I’m not saying that your parents will file statutory rape charges, but they do have the right to. He really is too old for a 13-year-old.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come —

CLINIC: A 22-year-old should not be having intercourse with a 13-year-old, and he should know better.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: It’s against the law because it’s been decided by the law that you are not old enough to make these decisions on your own.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Well, I mean, if you know you’re already about 10 weeks into your pregnancy, what’s your issue?

CALLER: I’m just — I just don’t know. I just want to find out if I really am pregnant.

CLINIC: Have you been missing periods?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Well, that’s usually the indication that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. So I couldn’t come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Well, no. I mean, there’s no need to. If you’re missing periods and you’ve been missing them since December, then you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Did you have protected intercourse?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, there’s the other clue. That’s your second big clue.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No protected intercourse, no periods, equals pregnancy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now see, these would be areas where a judge would say, you should have been talking to your parents. What’s the issue with your parents? What’s going on with them?

CALLER: They just don’t ever listen to me. I mean, they don’t understand me at all. They just — I don’t know. They’re just — they don’t ever understand anything.

CLINIC: Do they speak a different language or something?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: They’re American and you’re American?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, you should be able to talk to your parents about stuff like this. Do they beat you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Have they withheld food from you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Have they withheld shelter or clothing?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, what have they done to indicate to you that you can’t speak to them?

CALLER: Well, it’s — they’re just, they’re just going to be — I don’t know what they– they would just be furious if I told them that I was having sex with —

CLINIC: Well, let’s put you in their shoes for a second. Let’s say that you have a 13-year-old daughter who’s having intercourse with an adult and turns out to be pregnant. How would you feel?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: Well, that’s how your parents are going to be. They’re probably not going to know how to react at first either. They’re probably not going to understand how this happened to their child.

CALLER: But —

CLINIC: They’re probably going to wonder how come it is that you didn’t know that you could get pregnant if you were having unprotected intercourse.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I don’t know what to do. I’m scared.

CLINIC: Well, you need to talk to your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re going to have to do it. You’re just going to have to do it. This is really serious. If you don’t talk to them right away, pretty soon here you’re not going to be able to get an abortion at all, and you’re going to be a 13-year-old mother.

CALLER: But if — well, if I get an abortion could I get birth control though?

CLINIC: Yeah, but you’re going to have to get to that point. I mean, you know, let’s cross that bridge when we reach it. The first thing you got to do is figure out how you’re going to talk to your parents about this.

CALLER: Well, is there any —

CLINIC: Do they know that you’re dating a 22-year-old man?

CALLER: Yeah, they know. They just don’t like him.

CLINIC: Well, they’re not going to like this. Why wasn’t he using protection? He’s the adult. You’re the child. He should have known better.

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: Why wasn’t he using a condom?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: Did you ask him to?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, he should have been more responsible. I mean, he’s an adult. You’re not. He should know these things. He’s probably been around a lot longer than you have.

CALLER: Well, he said he loves me and —

CLINIC: He’s probably had more than one girlfriend in his life.

CALLER: Well, I don’t – But he said he loves me and that we’re going to get married and he’s going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Well, then you all go ahead and do that. But you’re still going to have to get approval from your parents for that too. In the state of Texas, you can’t get married without your parents’ approving of it if you’re under 17 years old. And I doubt very seriously a judge would approve of a 13-year-old getting married at this point.

CALLER: Well, could I go to Oklahoma or anything?

CLINIC: No. Not to get married.

CALLER: Well, like to get an abortion?

CLINIC: We live in America. We don’t let little kids have marriages.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Do you know any little kids your age that are married?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, there’s a good reason for that.

CALLER: But — I mean, we weren’t going to get married right away. That’s why we were wanting to get an abortion because like we can’t get married until later. But we don’t want to have a kid right now.

CLINIC: Well, I can understand. I didn’t want to have a kid when I was 13 either. But you’re too — you’re probably too far along to go before a judge, and I really don’t think a judge would sign off on this anyway. The judge would want to drag your boyfriend off and toss him into jail.

CALLER: Well, is there any other place I could go?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really? All right.

CLINIC: I mean, this is a state law, and there’s a good reason for this law. I mean, you know? I’m sorry, but you’re 13. You know?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Yeah, but you’re still a minor. Are you allowed to vote yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Are you legally allowed to drink?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Would you legally be allowed to join the Army?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I don’t think so.

CLINIC: Well, then there’s reasons for this. It’s cause you’re a kid. You’re still a kid. Kids don’t make the greatest — they don’t make the greatest choices in their life. And one choice right now, that you made, that’s not working out for you is having unprotected intercourse. You needed more information and you didn’t have it, and it’s very rare that kids your age do have it.

CALLER: Hmm. Well, could I get birth control then?

CLINIC: You don’t need birth control. You’re pregnant.

CALLER: Well, after. After that.

CLINIC: Yeah, but you’ll still have to have your parents involved in that up until you’re 17 years old. You got a ways to go for that. Now they’re probably going to want to put you on birth control to keep this from happening again.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But you’re going to have to tell them about this, and you need to do it right away. If you wait too much longer, you’re going to be too far along to get anything done. Like I said, then you’ll be a 13-year-old mother.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And your boyfriend will not be able to slip out of this one. By state law, he will be responsible.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That means child support.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You need to talk to him too. And I would —

CALLER: That’s all we’ve been talking about lately.

CLINIC: Well, the two of you together need to talk to your parents. It doesn’t matter if they don’t like him. The two of you need to go to your parents and fess up about this whole thing. You need to do it right away. Now, he’s the adult, so he needs to act like one. All right?

CALLER: All right. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Lisa.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Good luck. This is going to be a hard time for you, but as soon as you start doing things that are adult things like this, that’s when you can pretty much leave childhood behind. You’re going to have to start being very responsible, and one of the big things you’re going to have to do first is talk to your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just put yourself in their shoes. They’re going to probably be mad at first. They’re probably going to be hopping mad.

CALLER: No kidding.

CLINIC: But then once they get beyond that, they’re going to want to do what’s best for you because it sounds like to me up until this point your parents have been taking care of you. They love you. They just don’t want anything bad to happen to you. And they don’t want you to stop being a child so early I bet. So — but that’s done. It’s all over now.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Addison Planned Parenthood. This is Shawna.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t provide that service here. I can give you the number where they do.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 214-373-1868.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just worried because like my friend — I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You’d have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to tell my parents? Because they can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: Hold on just one second.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Just give them a call at that number, and they’ll discuss with you the parental notification law. You can get a bypass if you’d like to try to do that.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: To go before the judge to show that you are responsible enough yourself to make that choice without your parents’ consent. But they can definitely go over the details of that with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really worried because I, well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. But I’m just worried that I am pregnant because I haven’t had my period for awhile, so.

CLINIC: Well, you might want to go ahead and do that just to be sure first.

CALLER: Could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Umm. Yes.

CALLER: Who would you have to tell?

CLINIC: Let me double-check it, one second.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Yes. By law we do have to do that. Yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, just for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I don’t — Well, so I can’t come in there for a pregnancy test without you guys saying anything?

CLINIC: Right. Yeah. Due to your age. We — By law, there is a law requiring us to report that. But you can get a pregnancy test over-the-counter if you’d like to try that. That’s the same —

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: It’s the same accuracy as the tests that we use here. It’s just that you have to make sure that you’re testing within the correct time frame, which would be at least 10 to 14 days after the time that you may have gotten pregnant.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So if you’ve been having unprotected intercourse on a regular basis, and often, then you might need to do a couple tests.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But you want to do at least 10 to 14 days out from the time that you had your last unprotected intercourse to check for a current pregnancy.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, all right then.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant could I come in there for like birth control though?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, it’s the same rule applies due to your age.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: It would still apply.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. There’s a law.

CALLER: Well, what age could I get birth control?

CLINIC: You can get birth control, but we would have to write your information down and keep that on file, you know, due to your age at this time.

CALLER: Well, how old do I have to be to get birth control without you guys telling anybody?

CLINIC: I believe it’s 15 and up.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Routh Street Women’s Clinic. This is Amelia. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Okay. How far are you into your pregnancy?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: Well, we usually calculate it from the first day of your last normal period.

CALLER: Oh. Well, that was January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re still under 11 weeks. The fee is going to be $300 for the abortion service plus $25 for the medication that you’ll have to start taking, which makes it a total of $325.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. No. You have to have a parent’s consent.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, what can I do?

CLINIC: Well, I’m sorry but we do have to parent’s consent.

CALLER: There’s no way not to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: That is correct.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test. Could I come in there to get one?

CLINIC: That’s no problem. You can come in between 8 and 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. But would my parents have to know about that?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend would have to drive me there. Would that be all right if he was there with me for that?

CLINIC: It would be fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, but not today. You have to schedule that appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So first come in and get a test done first. Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So how much does birth control cost?

CLINIC: For the annual exam, it cost $70.

CALLER: Okay. So how soon could I get that if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Next Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name again?

CLINIC: Amelia.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, my boyfriend and me were talking about all this, and we don’t want anybody to know. But if he was paying for everything, would anyone have to know about him?

CLINIC: Well, we will have to have a parent’s consent.

CALLER: For the pregnancy test and the birth control?

CLINIC: We don’t charge for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, for the birth control too?

CLINIC: No. I mean, for that, that’s fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So nobody would have to know about him?

CLINIC: That is correct.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: (Unclear) Women’s Health Center. This is Sandra. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How many weeks pregnant are you?

CALLER: I’m not sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Was that the first day of your period or the last day?

CALLER: The first day.

CLINIC: So right now you’re looking at being 10 weeks pregnant. That’s $315 up until the 11th week.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: Is your boyfriend doing the abortion?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Is your boyfriend doing the abortion?

CALLER: I don’t know. What do you mean?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: And your boyfriend is how old?

CALLER: Twenty-two.

CLINIC: Oh boy. No, you would need your parents. And technically, that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: That’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: He’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well then, I would suggest you talk to your parents about having the termination if you’re going to get married.

CALLER: I mean, we’re not going to get married like soon. He has to finish going to school.

CLINIC: Okay. Sweetheart, we would not be able to help you. Okay? The only way that we would be able to help you is if you went to a judge and got a judicial bypass. And you’re going to have to justify to the judge why you want to do the termination, and see if he thinks that you’re fully in control of all your capacities.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: That’s free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do I need like a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: Do you need like a what?

CALLER: A lawyer.

CLINIC: Yes. They will provide a lawyer for you free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, does the judge ever say no?

CLINIC: If he sees that you can’t provide adequate proof, he does.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if he says yes, then I could come in there, and you wouldn’t have to have my parents there?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we don’t want to anyone to know. But he said he’s going to pay for everything with cash. So would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms if he was —

CLINIC: Your boyfriend is not having the termination; you are.

CALLER: But he said he was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Yeah. But the only person that we would need to sign papers or to have anything would be you.

CALLER: Okay. So nobody would find out about him?

CLINIC: We don’t even want to know about him, because technically we would have to report him to the cops.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Just like I said, that’s statutory rape. And statutory rape means that in the legal books, in the penal code, it says that if you are having sex with a person who is two years younger than you, then that’s considered rape.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And he should know better too. He’s 22 years old. You’re only 14.

CALLER: But we’re in love. I mean, I don’t see — But if the judge says it’s all right, you wouldn’t have to say anything to anybody?

CLINIC: I would not be able to tell you what the judge would say. You would have to —

CALLER: But if he does say it’s okay?

CLINIC: I don’t know, sweetheart. You would have to talk to the judge. I don’t know what their criteria is.

CALLER: Okay. But after I talk to the judge, and he said it was all right, I could come in there, and you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about anything?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, if it turned out that — Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to come in there and get that just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: I would do that first. Bring a sample of your urine in a sealed container, in a jar with a lid. Drop it off and fill out some forms. And then you can find out if you’re pregnant or not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how soon would I be able to find out?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday we take the pregnancy tests from 9 to 5.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how long does it take to find out?

CLINIC: And hour-and-a-half.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. We would not be able to help you. The only people that we provide services for are people who have done pregnancy terminations with us. After that we do gynecological services.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know where I could go to get birth control?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood would be your best bet.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t think so.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I don’t think so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sandra.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, how would I get a hold of the judge?

CLINIC: I can give you the number to speak to the lady that runs the judicial bypass. And her name is Diane. And the number is 1-866-999-5263.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just call her and see what she let’s you know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Fairmont Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far into the pregnancy?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How would you know?

CLINIC: Do you know when you had your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: It’s $395.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — I’m just kind of worried ’cause like, well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: There’s a law in Texas that says you have to have a parent that knows about it.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. That’s the law in Texas.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean —

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you there?

CALLER: I’m here.

CLINIC: Why is it that you’re not wanting to tell your parents?

CALLER: Well, I can’t tell my parents because like — It’s just they know my boyfriend and everything, like he works with my dad. But they don’t like him. They know we’re going out; they just don’t know we’re having sex. But if they found out that we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all. I mean, they’d be furious.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, there is a website that you can log-on to, and it will tell you how to go in front of a judge if you don’t think you can tell your parents. But you’re probably going to have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what’s the website?

CLINIC: The website is Janes, “J-A-N-E-S-DP”, like Dr. Pepper, dot com — or dot org.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, what do I do? What is that for?

CLINIC: That’s to get a judicial bypass. And that means you go in front of the judge and tell them why you can’t tell your parents. And very rarely they say, “okay, you can do it without telling a parent.” But they give you the legal documents to be able to do that. But if you go on there and say I can’t tell my parents because they’d get mad, they’re going to say, “so what? They’re going to have to get mad.” They’re only going to give you a judicial bypass if you have some really, really good reason why you can’t tell your parent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So they usually say no though?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, the thing is, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys be able to do that there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah. Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Roanoke.

CLINIC: Where’s that?

CALLER: It’s by Lewisville, kind of, sort of.

CLINIC: Lewisville has a Planned Parenthood. That’s going to be closer for you to go take a pregnancy test there, or you can just buy one at the drug store.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to come in there to get birth control?

CLINIC: No, Planned Parenthood. Let me give you the Planned Parenthood phone number for Lewisville. Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: It’s 972-221-7644.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. But would they have to tell anybody if I went there?

CLINIC: I don’t think they have to tell anyone for birth control, but anywhere you want to get an abortion is going to have to tell your parents. That’s the law in Texas. That’s not just our clinic. That’s every clinic in Texas.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Lisa. Just ask for Lisa T.

CALLER: Lisa T?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. What was your name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa too.

CLINIC: It’s Lisa also?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, that’s easy to remember.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
