CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Jason. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we do not do those here at this clinic.
CALLER: Really? Do you know of anybody that does?
CLINIC: Dallas or Ft. Worth would be the closest place.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — Like well, I’m just really worried because like, well I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: I think you yourself would have to go before an attorney.
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: I’m not sure what the cost is on it.
CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, what would I do with the attorney though?
CLINIC: They just make you sign some papers. It’s just an official red tape process.
CALLER: Okay. But do they always say it’s all right, and they wouldn’t have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: Well, to be honest with you I’m not sure what exactly happens there. You need to contact an attorney.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And ask them.
CALLER: Well, do you guys do the pregnancy tests there though?
CLINIC: Yes, we will do that for free.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: But would you have to tell my parents about that?
CLINIC: Oh, no, not with the pregnancy test, no.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, but the only thing is, my boyfriend will be the only way I could get there. Would that be all right if he’s there with me?
CLINIC: Yes, of course.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just — I’m wondering because like we were talking about all this, and we didn’t want anyone to know about us, so would you —
CLINIC: Don’t worry.
CALLER: — guys have to ask anything about him?
CLINIC: Well, not about him, no. He’s completely confidential. We’ll have to ask you some questions, but that’s it.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, you can.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though? It’s just I don’t want to have to go through this again.
CLINIC: Actually, I do not know. If you want to come and take a pregnancy test, we can talk about it then though. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Well, is there like a counselor or somebody there that —
CLINIC: There will be someone here you can talk to her, a nurse practitioner.
CALLER: Okay. Okay. Well, what was your name again?
CLINIC: Jason.
CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.
CLINIC: Thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Ursi. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t. In San Antonio we do.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Do you have that number?
CLINIC: Yes. It’s 210-736-8262.
CALLER: Well, do you know — Like I’m just worried about everything because like, well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of everything and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Let me ask, okay? Hold on. So how old are you right now?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in — Well, I’m 13 right now but I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Okay, hold on.
(pause)
CLINIC: Ma’am.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay. Since you are 13 and you are pregnant, they would have to report it to the cops unless you wait until you’re 14 – unless you want to go to Dr. Akino. I don’t know how their standards are.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC (Talking To Someone Else): Hold on. Okay?
CLINIC: I don’t know what their standards are, but you might want to call them. That’s in Corpus. But Planned Parenthood will have to report you to the cops.
CALLER: What would happen?
CLINIC: Well, they would go, they’ll just check up on you.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: They’ll just follow up.
CALLER: Well, I’m not real sure if I’m pregnant yet. I just am worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. So well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test to see?
CLINIC: Yeah. You can come in here for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?
CLINIC: Well, if it’s positive we would have to report it.
CALLER: Oh. Well, what could happen?
CLINIC: Nothing. Just the cops would follow up with the —
CALLER: Well, would they tell my parents?
CLINIC: More than likely.
CALLER: But they can’t tell my parents. I mean, if my parents found out, I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: You see, that’s their procedure.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: That’s what they do.
CALLER: Well, could I go to jail?
CLINIC: No, I don’t think you would go to jail.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: I think they would notify your parents and let them know, just in case.
CALLER: Me and my boyfriend have been talking about this and everything, but he would be the only one — like he said he was going to pay for everything. But he would be the only one that could bring me in. Would he get in trouble or anything?
CLINIC: Let me ask. Okay? Let me ask on that. Okay? Hold on. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Hold on. Okay?
(pause)
CLINIC: Ma’am.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay, the only way that your boyfriend will get in trouble is when they tell your parents, if your parents press charges against him for statutory rape.
CALLER: Oh. But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: That’s not what it means, that he’s not raping you. Statutory rape is when he’s not a minor. You’re a minor. And that’s when he’s way older than you. Because he’s, what, like 8 years older than you? 9 years older than you?
CALLER: Oh. Well, could he bring me in for the pregnancy test though and not get in trouble?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Yeah?
CLINIC: You know, the only thing is that if we report it is that, you know, it depends on what your parents do. All we do is report it and the cops just follow up and report to your parents.
CALLER: Well, are you going to report him?
CLINIC: Report him on pregnancy tests? I think we have to.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Yeah. And I don’t know if anybody else does that, but I know it’s a new law that we have.
CALLER: Well, what can I do then?
CLINIC: Buy one at ATB to find out for sure.
CALLER: Are they usually right?
CLINIC: Like the EPT, those are real good.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yeah. Those are good.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in and get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes. Yes, you can.
CALLER: But would you guys have to tell about that?
CLINIC: No. No.
CALLER: Not to anybody?
CLINIC: No. Only you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Well, the only thing is like I’m not old enough to drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?
CLINIC: Yeah, you could put him on your list.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And he can come pick them up when you do make an appointment.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You’ll become a patient here.
CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to report him if he was picking them up?
CLINIC: Um-um. No. No. Only on the positive pregnancy test we do because you’re a minor and he’s way older than — he’s older than 17.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?
CLINIC: You would have to come in and get some pamphlets, and we can do counseling if you like. I’m not allowed to give that information over the phone.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Well, what time are you guys open?
CLINIC: You can come in any time. We just ask that you be here before 4:30 today.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: No, 6:30 today. Today is Tuesday. I’m sorry.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you know — Like I’m just really worried because like — Well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, would you guys have to tell my parents if I came in though?
CLINIC: No. No. You can just come in.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend is there with me?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Because I don’t have any other way to get there.
CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Do you guys do pregnancy tests there though?
CLINIC: Um-hum. We do pregnancy tests here also. All right?
CALLER: Well, how much do those cost?
CLINIC: Oh, they’re free, and we do those on a walk-in basis also.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, if I could get birth control?
CLINIC: Yeah. You could, we also have the HOPES program that we call. You can get up to three cycles of pills without an exam. How old are you, you said?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Yeah, okay. We can, they can also do that today if your test came out to be negative. You would have to talk to the nurse and see. It’s just really up to her.
CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to —
CLINIC: Yeah. Everything’s confidential. I mean, you don’t have to bring a parent in or anything for you to come in here.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay, so if I had a positive test would you have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You would just get referred out to Medicaid if you’re wanting to keep the baby and then for that you’d just have to come in for counseling and stuff. Okay?
CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just my friend told me that you would have to tell if I had a positive pregnancy test.
CLINIC: No. No. No. We don’t have to tell. Okay? Do you have any more questions?
CALLER: Well, if I did could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Martha.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay, thanks.
CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome. Bye.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: You need to call 817-882-1175.
CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?
CLINIC: What is it?
CALLER: I’m just worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, they’re going to tell your parents.
CALLER: They are?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Is there any way not to tell my parents, because they can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Yeah. They’ll go over that with you when you call that number.
CALLER: Oh. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would there be any — But I’m just worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so.
CLINIC: Right. And I mean, if you’re 13, there’s going to be the Provider 18 Amendment which requires that anywhere that you — Well, if you go to one of our Planned Parenthood clinics, 13 and under, if you have a positive pregnancy test we have to report that to either the local police or child protective services.
CALLER: Why?
CLINIC: That’s just one of the things that we’re obligated to do.
CALLER: Oh. Well, so if it was a positive pregnancy test you guys would have to tell?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Well, what if it said that I wasn’t pregnant?
CLINIC: I mean, if you’re not pregnant it’s not that — Well, I don’t want to say it’s not that big of a deal. It’s just, we don’t have to report if you’re not pregnant.
CALLER: Oh. Well, could I get birth control if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant?
CLINIC: You sure could.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: Um-um.
CALLER: No? All right. Well, so is it all right if my boyfriend brings me in to see?
CLINIC: You’re going to — are you going to do just the pregnancy test?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Where are you? Are you in Arlington or Ft. Worth?
CALLER: Well, I live in Roanoke.
CLINIC: Okay. What are you close to?
CALLER: Arlington.
CLINIC: Okay. We have a clinic in North Arlington off of 360 in Abrams Street. Or this is the clinic in South Arlington off of I-20 and Cooper.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend gave me this number, so I think he wants to go there.
CLINIC: Okay. If you’re coming here you need to be here no later than 6:00. It’s $18, cash or credit card.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if he was going to pay for everything, would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. He just — We just don’t want a whole bunch of people knowing about us, so. So you guys wouldn’t have to ask anything or have him sign anything?
CLINIC: Only if you have a positive pregnancy test.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Salina. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Uh, yes, we do that.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: Actually, we have two clinics — one that’s in Dallas. The other one’s in Ft. Worth. Which one would you like to go?
CALLER: Um, probably Dallas.
CLINIC: Dallas? $295 for pregnancies up to 11 weeks.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it cheaper at the other place though?
CLINIC: They charge $300. I mean, it’s only $5 difference. (laughs)
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — Well, I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents. But —
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. Unless he’s your legal guardian.
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: No? Then he can’t.
CALLER: Well, is there any way that I wouldn’t have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: Yeah. You can do something like — Hold on, okay? Let me double check. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: I think you can go to any of our Planned Parenthood clinic and — Okay, hold on. Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Let me double check.
(pause)
(music)
CLINIC: Thank you for holding.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: The best you can do is to do a judicial bypass.
CALLER: What is that?
CLINIC: You will have to go to court and prove to a judge that, you know, you really can make this decision yourself.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Well, do I need a lawyer for that?
CLINIC: No, but you will have to come in. Okay, hold on. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
(music)
CLINIC: Thank you for holding. You will want to call us back tomorrow after 9:00 to schedule appointment with our manager. Because she will have to do this with you.
CALLER: Oh. So —
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, could I come in there and get a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: You can go to our any other Planned Parenthood clinic that does it. Yeah, they would do pregnancy tests for you.
CALLER: Oh. Well, can I go to you guys and get one?
CLINIC: No, we don’t — we do that here, but unless you have the appointment with us, because we only — I mean, basically we just do surgeries, okay?
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: So you can go to any — which city — I mean, if you just want to go ahead and do a pregnancy test you can just go to a drugstore.
CALLER: Are those usually right though?
CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, they are pretty good. Yes. Uh-huh. Or you can just go to other Planned Parenthood clinic, and you don’t — I mean, they won’t ask you any questions, okay? So just go in and do it.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like say that I wasn’t pregnant, would they be able to do birth control?
CLINIC: Yes. They will do that. However, with Planned Parenthood you will have to do a pap smear with us.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. And if you do that and they will be able to give you prescription for birth control pills as well.
CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody that I was on birth control pills?
CLINIC: Oh, no, no, no, no, not those. Uh-huh. You don’t need anything, like no parental consent for all that, okay? You just parental consent for the abortion.
CALLER: Well, would they have to ask anything about my boyfriend?
CLINIC: No, they don’t. They won’t.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, it’s just basically you just go and tell them what you need and they will do it for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Great.
CALLER: Okay, thanks.
CLINIC: Bye.
