CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: All we’re doing is asking people to just look in a phone book.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you guys do the pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But it doesn’t really matter. You’re going to have to have one there when you go to the clinic anyways.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: Yeah. If that’s your option, then you’re going to have to have that for the clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I get that there and then take it over there? Could I go to where you’re at?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: It’s just my friend told me it would be best to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Yeah. We don’t offer the abortion though, but yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to be a certain age for that? It’s just my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: We would have to tell your parents what?

CALLER: That I was there.

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: I would just feel better if my boyfriend was there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. You wouldn’t have to ask anything about him? He’s just worried that you guys would be asking a lot of questions.

CLINIC: About him? Why would we need to know about him?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: He’s not filling out any paperwork or anything, is he?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Would he have to?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t have to. That’s my point. He doesn’t have to do anything but just sit there (chuckle).

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So no. I don’t have to know anything about him, or your parents don’t get to know anything or whatever.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. But that would be something that you will have to do with the nurse whenever you come in. If she’s not here, I’ll give you her schedule.

CALLER: Well, how long does it take to do that?

CLINIC: Do what?

CALLER: Like talk to the nurse and get birth control?

CLINIC: About 30 minutes. Hassle-free.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: I said it’s hassle-free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. We don’t have to tell your parents anything. We are strictly confidential. When you come in here, it’s you. Your parents don’t have to know anything. The only way they have to know is if you tell them. They can’t call here and get any information about you.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want anybody to know, so.

CLINIC: Right. I understand. And we are not allowed to tell anyone anything. And if you feel someone’s done that, then you have the right to take action. Your information is confidential, no matter your age or anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: You’ve been just so helpful. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sharonda, “S-H-A-R-O-N-D-A.”

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: All right. Do you have a number then?

CLINIC: Excuse me? A number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Uh-huh– 329-8120.

CALLER: All right. Do you know like if they would have to tell my parents? It’s just my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m having an abortion.

CLINIC: You do have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is there anything that he could do instead?

CLINIC: Nope. You’d have to go out of state. Let me give you a couple of phone numbers.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I can give you a number for one in Dallas.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 214-373-1868.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Yes. You can walk in for those, and they’re $8.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know that I was there?

CLINIC: No. You can come tomorrow for that if you’d like.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, if I come in for a pregnancy test, if it was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. You can consent for yourself with that. And it would be $12 plus the cost of the pills, which is 13 a month.

CALLER: Okay. I just have so many questions. If I think of anything else, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You sure can. My name’s Amy.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood West. This is Patricia. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: You might call Reproductive Services at 665-6400.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: You can ask. I’m not sure if I can answer you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to know. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could I just have him sign whatever —

CLINIC: Concerning about what?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Concerning what?

CALLER: Having an abortion.

CLINIC: Well, hon, I don’t have any information about that whatsoever. You’ll have to call that number I just gave you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: We do free pregnancy tests on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I’ll be just 14 in March?

CLINIC: That doesn’t make any difference, hon.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No, you don’t have to write that down or anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well —

CLINIC: For a free pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control right away?

CLINIC: Not that day. You would have to make an appointment.

CALLER: How long does it take to —

CLINIC: Well, we could probably do it in the next day or two.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, not about that, uh-uh.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell them about anything?

CLINIC: Hold on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hon, we don’t have to notify your parents, but we have to notify DHS about it.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: Department of Human Services.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re a minor and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean? Like we’re in love. We’re going to get married. Could anything happen?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t know. That would just be up to the —You know, I don’t know.

CALLER: So should I just not come in there then?

CLINIC: Well, hon, that’s up to you. I can’t give you any advice on that. But now as far as when you come in for a free pregnancy test, that’s up to you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to tell the DHS that I was there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Well, not if the girl doesn’t know.

CALLER: Oh. Doesn’t know about my boyfriend you mean?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Oh. So it’s just better not to say anything then?

CLINIC: Well, I’m not going to tell you that, okay (chuckles). I mean, I’m not going to tell you one way of the other on that. I’m just telling you that if you come in and she finds out, then, yes, she will report it. And I don’t know that anything will be done. I can’t tell you that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would I be able to get birth control then?

CLINIC: Well, I’m — hold on just a second.

CALLER: Okay.

(short pause)

CLINIC: Yes, you can still get birth control, hon.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, if you tell the nurse how old he is, yes, she would report it. But you can still get birth control.

CALLER: But if I don’t tell her, she won’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: That’s right.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Reproductive Services. This is Veronica. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Do you know how far along? Do you know when the first day of your last period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. If you are between 7 and 12 weeks, it’s 405. If you are 13 to 14 weeks, it’s 490, and 15 to 17 weeks is 630, and that’s as far as we go here; otherwise, we can refer you somewhere else.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. So where am I then if my last period was like January 3rd?

CLINIC: Well, can you hold on just one moment? And I’ll try to find out.

CALLER: Sure.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. You are probably close to eight weeks, eight-and-a-half, maybe nine.

CALLER: So how much would that cost then?

CLINIC: $405.

CALLER: Oh. Alright. Well —

CLINIC: But the first available appointment I have is March 20th.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to schedule an appointment?

CALLER: Well, the thing is, I was just actually wanting to ask, I’m going to be 14 later on this month — on the 19th — and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. I wish we could. With the new law that Governor Keating passed in Oklahoma, all minors coming in for an abortion have to have a parental consent, even if you are an emancipated minor.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I know. So you might want me to refer you out of state, anyway. Actually, there’s a place in Dallas that will handle minors without parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You want the number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It’s 800-727-2255.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes. And you could also — well, actually, the only thing we can — well, hold on just one moment, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you holding for the nurse?

CALLER: For Veronica.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Hold on just a minute.

(pause)

CLINIC: May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to Veronica.

CLINIC: Yes. She got busy with somebody else.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I’ll be happy to help you.

CALLER: Well, I was wondering if I could get a pregnancy test without my parents finding out. Because I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test or an abortion?

CALLER: A pregnancy test.

CLINIC: You can come in tomorrow, 8:30 to 3:30. And if you are two weeks late on your period, it’s a free test.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my period since January 3rd. That’s why I was calling, to get an abortion. But I haven’t had a pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Well, you can’t get an abortion without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? But if you want to run a pregnancy test, we’ll be happy to do that.

CALLER: Oh. But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay. What time are you guys open?

CLINIC: We are open at 8:30. Come on around 10:00 or so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We can run the pregnancy test. Now, you cannot have an abortion without the permission of your parents.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if the pregnancy test turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No, you cannot.

CALLER: Oh. You guys don’t do birth control?

CLINIC: No. Just for our parents. That’s all.

CALLER: Well, could I become a patient then?

CLINIC: No. You have to have an abortion to be a patient.

CALLER: Oh, okay. And I have to tell my parents before —

CLINIC: Yes, you do have to tell your parents. I’m sorry.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So when I come in for a pregnancy test, nobody has to know anything?

CLINIC: Well, you’re coming to a clinic. Nobody has to know anything. We won’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
