CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Julie.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?
CLINIC: Reproductive Services in Tulsa.
CALLER: Do you have that phone number?
CLINIC: 665-6400.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be okay to come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Um-hmm. You need to be here between 8 and 4. They’re $15 cash only, and we offer them free every Monday from 1 to 4.
CALLER: Okay. So I could come in on Monday then?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: I’d really want my boyfriend to be there with me; is that all right?
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just my problem is I’m really scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, that you guys would have to tell my parents that I’m —
CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t. Everything’s confidential.
CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend’s 22, and my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me, and they just can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: That’s fine. If you come in for a test, it’s all confidential.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Can you hold on a moment?
CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. We do pregnancy testing.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Have you had a test?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you missed your period?
CALLER: Yeah, that’s why I’m really scared. Like my last period was December 14th.
CLINIC: Okay. We can do a urine test. It’s $8.
CALLER: Okay. Like I’m just scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Well, I mean, it’s confidential, you coming in. If you wanted to come in for a test, that’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if he’s there with me? Because I would just feel better if he was there.
CLINIC: Sure. That would be fine.
CALLER: Okay. He’s just worried about you guys asking a lot of questions though. Would you have to ask him anything?
CLINIC: I’m sorry?
CALLER: Would you have to ask him anything? He’s just wondering that people would ask a lot of questions and stuff.
CLINIC: What did you say? I’m sorry. I’m having a hard time hearing you.
CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend, he wants to come and be there with me, but he doesn’t want to be asked a lot of questions. Would you guys be asking questions and stuff?
CLINIC: Well, we would just talk to you when you came in. Okay?
CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Yeah?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: Well, we encourage you to talk to someone about that, but we can talk to you about that when you come in.
CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t talk to my parents. They can’t find out at all. Like if they found out that I was having sex, I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: Well, we just encourage it. It’s not a requirement, but we encourage you to do that.
CALLER: Oh, well, alright. They just —
CLINIC: But if you haven’t had a period since December, it would be a good idea to have the test done.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have a lot of questions. Is it all right I call you back if I think of something else? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Connie. But if you’d like to make an appointment, just call us, and we can make you an appointment.
CALLER: All right. I have to call him and see. But is it all right if I call you back?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This Shelley (sp). May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that would?
CLINIC: Yes, I can give you a number to call. His name is Dr. Burns.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a second. The number is 329-8120.
CALLER: Okay. Like my friend actually told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: That will be something that Dr. Burns would have to decide. We don’t work out of his office, so you would probably have to ask his office about that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see?
CLINIC: Yes. You can do that, walk-in and it’s $8.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No (chuckle).
CALLER: Oh, okay. Like I would really like my boyfriend to be there. Is that okay?
CLINIC: That would be fine.
CALLER: Okay. And nobody would ask anything about us, and they wouldn’t have to know about us at all?
CLINIC: Alright. Let me just ask you this? Are you emancipated?
CALLER: No. What do you mean? What is that?
CLINIC: Like certified as an adult.
CALLER: Oh. Not that I know of.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, hold on for just a second.
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Hi.
CALLER: Hi.
CLINIC: Yeah, you can just walk in. You don’t need an appointment. Now you would need to be at least 14 days pregnant. Now think back at the time that you’re worried about that you could have gotten pregnant. Has that been at least 14 days ago?
CALLER: I think so. But I just haven’t had had a period since like December 14th, so I don’t know.
CLINIC: And have you ever missed your periods before?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: And did you have unprotected intercourse, sex?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: How about in January?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you use any type of birth control?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. So yeah, you can go ahead and come on in. You need to fill out some paperwork. You don’t need an appointment. And we’re open until 5 tonight. Tomorrow we’ll be open until 5. We close between 12:30 and 1 for lunch.
CALLER: Okay. So I could come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Yeah. They’re $8.
CALLER: Okay. And nobody has to know about anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if my boyfriend’s there with me and everything?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: Casey.
CALLER: Oh, okay. If I came in for a pregnancy and it said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No. No, not at all.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right if my boyfriend picked them up? Because I can’t drive to get there.
CLINIC: You’ll need to come in for the visit so that you can get the prescription for the meds prescribed to you. But then after that, anybody can pick them up for you that you give permission to.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All righty?
CALLER: What was that other lady talking about, about being emancipated?
CLINIC: Well, I’ll have you sign some paperwork so that will take care of that.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: All right.
CALLER: All right. Thank you.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Dr. Burns’ office.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It’s $400, and our limit is 12 weeks in the pregnancy.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?
CLINIC: Do you know when your last menstrual period was?
CALLER: January 15th.
CLINIC: And it was a normal period for you?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Probably about six to seven right now.
CALLER: Okay. So that would be all right then?
CLINIC: Um-hmm. As long as you only missed one or two periods, you’re fine. But if you miss three periods, you’re too far.
CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it all, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, ma’am. You’ll need to bring a parent with you to sign the consent form.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah. We can’t see anybody under 18 without their parent’s consent.
CALLER: Is there any way not to have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: That’s the only way we could do it, hon.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Because I can’t tell my parents at all. Well, is there anyplace else I could go?
CLINIC: Not that I’m aware of.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Yeah. The law requires that anybody under 18, any kind of medical attention needs to have a parent’s consent.
CALLER: Oh, okay. So what should I do then?
CLINIC: I would talk to my mother (chuckle).
CALLER: But I can’t talk to her. I mean, she doesn’t ever listen to me. Both my parents don’t ever understand anything.
CLINIC: Are you in school?
CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.
CLINIC: You’re homeschooled?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: What about calling Planned Parenthood and maybe talking to a counselor there?
CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s what I’m saying. They could maybe help you talk to your parents.
CALLER: Oh. I don’t know. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to get a pregnancy test there just to make sure I am before I talk to them.
CLINIC: Yeah. You could come here for a test or you can go to Planned Parenthood or the Health Department.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost if I go to you guys?
CLINIC: We charge $10 for a test.
CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No, uh-uh.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: No, we actually don’t, unless you’re a patient, unless we see you; then we’ll give you some birth control. But like I was saying, Planned Parenthood or the Health Department would help you with that. If you weren’t pregnant, then they could get you started on birth control pills so you don’t get pregnant.
CALLER: But would they have to tell anyone if I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: No. I would start with Planned Parenthood if I were you. Because they can help you out. You know, at least you’ll have somebody to talk to. The Health Department will just do the test and that’s it.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But I would go to Planned Parenthood, and they can help you.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Wendy.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: All righty, hon.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.
