CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t perform them here, but our Beacon, Poughkeepsie office, and New Windsor and Goshen — Goshen and New Windsor, they do the medical TOPs. But if you’re going to go to one of those offices, we have to do an exam here before you go to see them. And with the Poughkeepsie and Beacon, they do the termination with local anesthesia. You’re awake.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you have to be a certain age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you need a pregnancy test, we’ll do a pregnancy test here. You can walk in today between 1 and 4.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t do it today. I have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay. I was giving you the hours. If not, you come in tomorrow 8:30 to 11. And they’ll do a pregnancy test, they’ll go over your options, and then they’ll advise where you can go. And we’ll give you a list, and you can review, then you can decide where you would have transportation to get to. But here in the Newburg office, we don’t do the terminations, but we do advise you where you can go to have one done.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if he comes with me? I mean, he’s 22.

CLINIC: What do you mean? Come here to the office?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, he can come with you.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: Well, you do know about statutory rape, right?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Statutory rape.

CALLER: What’s that?

CLINIC: Statutory rape is because you’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Well, we’re like mandated reporters.

CALLER: Oh. What does that mean?

CLINIC: We’re mandated reporters, that we’re healthcare professionals. And if we see something that needs to be called into them, we would have to do that.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because it’s a law. You’re 14 and he’s 22. Even if you gave him permission to have sex — does your parents know your sexual involvement?

CALLER: No, they don’t know at all. They just don’t like him. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Yeah, you’re in love, you’re going to get married. But I’m just saying, if you were to come here — and even to any other healthcare facility or office — they’re mandated reporters. Do they not like him because they know how old he is and you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, yeah. They think he’s too old. But we’re in love.

CLINIC: Well, I’m just letting you know. But we are here for your services. And what I’m telling you, no matter what healthcare office you decide to go to, they’re going to discuss that with you because —

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: You’re pregnant, and you’re requesting to do a termination. I mean, you’re not going to continue with the pregnancy. You can’t prolong that, you understand? Because the longer you wait for a termination, the more difficult the procedure can be.

CALLER: Okay. And you don’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Well, when you come in, whoever’s going to talk to you, you know, they would know.

CALLER: Okay. Why would they — why would they have to say anything?

CLINIC: We just want to make sure it’s consensual that you gave him permission. But then again, even though you might have given him permission, because of your age, it’s a law that we are mandated to make a report. And they will just look into it. He might get arrested; he may not get arrested. You know, they want to know where your parents — that you’re this age, and you’re having sex with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: Get arrested? I mean — but we’re in love. I don’t understand. I mean, he’s going to take care of me.

CLINIC: What don’t you understand about it? I’m just letting you know it’s a law. And when there’s laws involved, then we just have to follow the laws.

CALLER: Is there any way around that? I can’t — Like nobody can know.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on for a minute.

RECORDING: — is located at 91 Dubois Street, across from the hospital. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. We accept Medicaid, MVP, GHI, GHI-HMO, and many other insurance plans. Thank you for holding. We’ll be with you momentarily. If you need an exam, we have walk-in clinics Monday through Thursday, starting at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Fridays at 1 p.m. You don’t need an appointment. Just come in.

(spanish recording)

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I just spoke to the nurse practitioner. It’s really your decision where you’re going to go to be seen regarding to have your pregnancy test, and they can do a counseling visit regarding the termination. But I’m just letting you know that if you come here, if you go to any other health facility, you know, if they are aware of your age and your partner’s age, I’m just letting you know what can happen.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: The statutory rape that I discussed with you. They’re mandated reporters, so they would, you know, have to make a phone call.

CALLER: So if I told them about my boyfriend, they would have to call?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. What if I didn’t say anything?

CLINIC: I’m not — that’s your decision. I’m just letting you know, no matter where you go, if they’re aware of his age and yours, and you’re pregnant — that’s your decision if you’re going to terminate. But due to his age, and your parents are not aware, that’s a law. He can get arrested. A phone call can be made into the mandated hotline number.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if I can call you back real quick?

CLINIC: Sure you can. We’re here until 4.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Marabelle (ph).

CALLER: Marabelle?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: All right. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Marlene speaking.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Can you hang on for one second?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi. Are you a patient here?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We currently have started doing a new service here, not here, but within our Planned Parenthood of Niagara County. However, it’s consists of internal referrals. So if you want to come in for a confirmatory pregnancy test, I can refer you to our clinic.

CALLER: What does that mean?

CLINIC: What does that mean?

CALLER: Yeah. Like —

CLINIC: That means that we would have to do a pregnancy test here and confirm that you are, in fact, pregnant. And then we could schedule you an appointment over at our other clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Is there any age limit for that or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Cause like I’ll be 14 in March. And that’s still all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Like my friend told me you guys have to tell my parents if I’m going to have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No, it’s not true.

CALLER: No? Okay. Because like they can’t find out at all. Cause like, well, my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married. But like they hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So like there’s just no way they can find out.

CLINIC: Okay. So are you available Saturday morning to come in to our walk-in clinic for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah, maybe. I’d have to see if he can take me there.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ve got walk-ins from 9 to 11.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And nobody has to know?

CLINIC: No. You’d come in for the pregnancy test, and we would schedule you a different appointment for the abortion.

CALLER: What if I have to go there? Like do they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? All right. Well, like say that I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. When I talk to my boyfriend, is it all right if I call you back —

CLINIC: Sure, that’s fine.

CALLER: — and ask questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Chandra (sp).

CALLER: Chandra? All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know who I can call for that?

CLINIC: If you pick up the phone book or look in the Yellow Pages, it’s got the phone number list right there.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: The nearest is in Binghamton though.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: The nearest place is Binghamton.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it all right if I ask a question?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, like my main concern is like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No. Not in New York State, no. You wouldn’t need parent consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just they can’t find out at all. Cause like my boyfriend is 22. We’re going to get married, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me. I don’t know. Like they just can’t find out at all, so.

CLINIC: Yeah, no. Everybody’s visit is confidential here.

CALLER: Like do I have to be a certain age to get an abortion?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, you don’t. But how are you going to pay for it? I know when you go to the office, you have to say how you’re going to pay for it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for it.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Because if you come here — what we do is you could come in for a pregnancy test, and then we give you options counseling, or you can call directly yourself. I know the doctor’s name is Dr. Cousins in Binghamton.

CALLER: How much is the —

CLINIC: I don’t know. I have no idea.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much is the counseling?

CLINIC: You’re a student, so there’d be no charge. What we do is schedule you for a pregnancy test appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So like even if he’s paying and he’s not a student anymore, it’s all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, you’re not married. Yeah.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Mm-hmm.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to make an appointment here first?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Actually, I could pop you in tomorrow morning. Do you want to do it tomorrow morning at 10:30?

CALLER: 10:30?

CLINIC: I need your last name.

CALLER: My last name is Smith.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: And your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: And phone number you can be reached at?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see what his cell phone number is.

CLINIC: That’s okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call him, and then call you back?

CLINIC: That’s okay. I can put “no” because it’s tomorrow morning. Do you know where we are in Norwich?

CALLER: Well, I think he might.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 157 East Main Street, right across from the fairgrounds in Norwich.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So 10:30. That’s tomorrow morning.

CALLER: What if like he can’t get the day off in such a short notice? Is it all right to reschedule or anything?

CLINIC: Yeah. Why don’t you call us back and tell us you’re not going to come in the morning.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Because we open at 8:30.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right, if he had any questions, if I can talk to you later?

CLINIC: You mean tomorrow?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Yep. We’re open here until 5:30 tonight, yeah.

CALLER: Okay. So what was your name?

CLINIC: Dixie.

CALLER: Dixie.

CLINIC: When you come for your appointment you could ask a lot of questions because you’ll be seeing a nurse. She could tell you anything.

CALLER: Okay. But the nurse wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?

CLINIC: No. Your visit is entirely confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Everybody that comes here is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Thanks.

(phone ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not right here at this clinic. We do them in Utica.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number or whatever?

CLINIC: Do I have what?

CALLER: The phone number for that?

CLINIC: You want to call Utica?

CALLER: I guess.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know you’re pregnant for sure?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay. And it came out positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And you want to have an abortion.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you live in Oneida?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do you live in Oneida?

CALLER: I live in Madison.

CLINIC: Madison?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Is it easier for you to get to Utica than it is Oneida? I mean, I can give you their phone number if you want to.

CALLER: Well, it’s just like my friend told me to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay. You could come here. First we would start with a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay? We’d have to do one here. You’d come here first for an exam, okay. And then we would set you up in an appointment to go to Utica and have it done.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have like an abortion or whatever.

CLINIC: No. No. No. This is totally confidential. You don’t need their permission.

CALLER: Yeah. Because I can’t tell my parents at all. Like my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re planning on getting married. But like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Oh. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Ooooh. That is kind of old for you, but I won’t be your parent and tell you that. (laughs) Okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: You’ve probably heard that enough. Okay. So when was your last period?

CALLER: Well, it was like around maybe the first week in December.

CLINIC: First week of December?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m trying to see how far along you are now. So you’ve like missed two periods?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re over 10 — you’re going on about 10 weeks now. So we’d have to get you in here right away.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because in Utica — depending on when your period started — if I put it on December 1st, say you got your period December 1st, that puts you at — Let me see how many weeks you are now. You’re about 10-and-a-half weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you guys don’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. It could stay confidential. Do you know how you were going to pay for it?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Because it’s going to be like — tell him it could be over $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: So check with him on that first, okay, to make sure he’s going to pay for it.

CALLER: Like if you guys did the pregnancy test, and it turned out I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. No. Everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When can you get in here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend, and then call you back to see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay. So why don’t you do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me tell you what we have. Does he work days?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. If he could get in here Friday, first thing in the morning, like 8:45 —

CALLER: Okay. I don’t know. I’ve got to see.

CLINIC: We can squeeze you in Monday. You’re going to have to get in here soon because they might not have appointments available, okay? And the further along you are, the more it cost, so.

CALLER: So when I call back, is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. You can talk to one of the other girls, too, Janet. Janet answers the phone. We’re all, you know —

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sandy, Sandy V. There are two of us here, okay.

CALLER: Sandy V. All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Call me back.
