CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?
CALLER: Yeah. Hi, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay. Do you know how much it costs?
CLINIC: $400.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really scared because like my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: And she said that they would have — that you guys would have to tell my parents about it.
CLINIC: No. No. No.
CALLER: But my boyfriend is 22. Could you just have him sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You don’t have to. You don’t have to tell anybody. Nobody has to sign anything for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Nobody has to know. And there’s different — you might not have to pay the full amount. There’s different ways we can, different programs that can help you. So it might get paid for for you.
CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job or anything. My boyfriend said he would pay. Is that all right?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So do you want to make an appointment?
CALLER: Well, is it all right if he’s there with me?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Yep. And what our protocol is, first you meet with a counselor. And both of you can come. And then she’ll schedule you for the abortion if that’s what you choose.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just we were talking, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to be asking a lot of questions or anything?
CLINIC: Well, what do you mean by that?
CALLER: Well, I’m just — just about like me and you wouldn’t have to say anything about him?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: No. No.
CALLER: So like could I come in there for like a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: Yep. Okay. Yep. Hold on.
CALLER: Okay. I’m just really scared because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. But I just — I can’t let my parents find out at all because I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: So is it all right to come in there for a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: Yep. I’m trying to find — does your boyfriend work?
CALLER: Yeah. He has a job.
CLINIC: And do you want him to come to counseling too?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: So where does he work?
CALLER: He works like on like daily construction. So.
CLINIC: Okay, so in the evening would be better?
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: Can you come tomorrow evening?
CALLER: I’d have to call and talk to him, but what time tomorrow?
CLINIC: I have a 5:45 or a 6:30.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Probably 6:30.
CLINIC: Do you want to take it and then see?
CALLER: Yeah, I guess.
CLINIC: Okay. So let’s schedule it. And then if there’s a problem you can call us, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. What’s your last name?
CALLER: It’s Smith.
CLINIC: Smith? Okay.
CALLER: Do you know though like, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant if I could get birth control?
CLINIC: Yep.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: Right. No. We wouldn’t tell anybody anything.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay? What’s your first name?
CALLER: It’s Christine.
CLINIC: With a “K” or a “C”?
CALLER: A “C-H”.
CLINIC: And let’s see. Do you know your Social Security number or not?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. What’s your date of birth?
CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988. Do I need a Social Security number?
CLINIC: No, that’s okay.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: March 19, ’88. Okay.
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: Okay. And do you have a phone? You might want to give his.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend has a cellphone, but I don’t know the number yet because he just got it. But we were wanting to use that number.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, when you come in you can let us know, okay?
CALLER: All right. Okay. So —
CLINIC: Let’s see.
CALLER: So just call you back if I needed to change the appointment?
CLINIC: Yeah. If everything’s okay, then call us back.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Your last period —
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: Rachel.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You said your last period was in December, right?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: December — do you know the date?
CALLER: 21st.
CLINIC: 21st. Okay. All right. Okay, so you’re all set for tomorrow evening at 6:30, okay?
CALLER: Okay. I’ll tell him and see what he says.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Okay, thanks.
CLINIC: Yep. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Sasha speaking. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Yeah. Do you know — Well, how much does it cost?
CLINIC: They range from 325 to 475.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And we do medical and surgical.
CALLER: Okay. What’s the difference?
CLINIC: One is you take a pill. It’s called the Mife pill, and the other one is the surgical, which is on the table.
CALLER: Okay. Like do you have to be a certain age for one or the other?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No? Cause I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: You’ll be what?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No, there’s no age. The only thing is, for the medical, you can only receive it if you’re seven weeks or shorter.
CALLER: How do you know?
CLINIC: You’d have to come in. We do a pregnancy test here, then we schedule options with you. And you decide what you want to decide. Then they see how far you are, and we go from there.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you have proof of pregnancy?
CALLER: Well, I took a test like over —
CLINIC: A home test doesn’t count.
CALLER: Huh?
CLINIC: A home pregnancy test doesn’t count if you’re coming to us. We need like maybe from a doctor’s office. We have our walk-in clinics every Tuesday and Saturday mornings at 8:30, first come, first served. So you should be here by 8:15. Like, if you come in Saturday, you should be here by 8:15. You know, get here early.
CALLER: Is it okay if my boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: The charge for the day will be $34. That includes your options. You’ll do options on Saturday, and then you go from there. So if you make it here by 8:15 Saturday morning —
CALLER: Like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents —
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: — that I’m having an abortion.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Because there’s no way they can find out.
CLINIC: We are confidential.
CALLER: Alright.
CLINIC: The only way I can see them finding out is if you tell them or — they can’t call here and ask about you. We don’t give out information. The only way they would know is if you tell them or if you use their insurance, and you’re under their insurance.
CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend has insurance. He’s 22. He’ll take care of everything.
CLINIC: Yeah. But you have to be under it. If you’re not under it, then it will just have to pay cash.
CALLER: Oh. Is it all right if he pays cash?
CLINIC: That’s fine. We just don’t take checks. We take cash for it.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? That’s all. Just don’t use your parents insurance, and you should be okay. No, we don’t tell your parents.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So if you could get here by 8:15 Saturday morning, we can see. You know, I guess they can tell you maybe how far you are, do the options, see what you decide, and we’ll go from there. And we usually schedule the abortions within a week.
CALLER: Okay. If like it turns out like after they take the pregnancy test that I wasn’t —
CLINIC: Only if you’re less than 12 weeks. What were you going to ask?
CALLER: Well, like do you guys do like birth control there?
CLINIC: We do that too. What’s your zip code? I just need your zip code.
CALLER: Well, I live in Clarksville.
CLINIC: No, what’s the zip code?
CALLER: Why do you need that?
CLINIC: I just want to know if maybe you’re eligible for your STARS card. That’s why I want to know what your zip code is.
CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s outside of Albany.
CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. What’s the zip code? I just need your zip code.
CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call you back with that?
CLINIC: Oh, you don’t know?
CALLER: I’ve got to find that out.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Well, I just was wondering if it was within a certain range. Normally, our teenagers participate in a STARS program, which qualifies them for their annuals. They get birth control pills.
CALLER: Well, I just don’t want anybody to know about it.
CLINIC: What do you mean? Like your family?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Oh, they wouldn’t know about it — that’s what I’m trying to tell you — if you were to sign up for a STARS program.
CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if I can give you my boyfriend’s zip code for that like when I talk to him?
CLINIC: What’s his zip code?
CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to ask him.
CLINIC: Oh. Well, then if that’s the case — because you know you need to come in and fill out paperwork.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: When you do the paperwork — what we do is that we call. But it depends on what you want us to say. Some people want us to say Planned Parenthood when we call, some want us to say “doctors,” or other people want us to just say your their friend Julia. We call, and I say, “Hi. Is Amy there?” “Who’s calling?” “Oh, Julia.” And if they say, “Oh, she’s not here, take a message.” “No message, I’ll call back.”
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So that’s how we do it. Or if they’re like, “She doesn’t know Julia.” “Oh, okay, well,” — we do not tell information to the parents because that’s confidential. No one in this office tells. It’s totally confidential. So I don’t know where your girlfriend got that information from.
CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back after I talk to him?
CLINIC: Sure, no problem.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: At least you know, if you want to get this done and over, come in Saturday morning at 8:15. And it will be $34.
CALLER: Okay. What was your name?
CLINIC: Oh. My name is Sasha.
CALLER: Sasha?
CLINIC: Mm-hmm.
CALLER: Alright. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Cherie speaking. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Not at this site. Starting Friday we will have a site opening in Niagara Falls.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Like I was wondering if like my parents have to find out about this at all. Like my friend said you guys have to tell them.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Not at all?
CLINIC: Uh-uh.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just like my parents can’t find out at all. Cause like, well, my boyfriend, he’s 22. And we’re going to get married. But like they don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. So they just can’t find out or anything.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you have insurance?
CALLER: Well, he said he was going to pay for it.
CLINIC: Well, yeah. Because with insurance, if you use the insurance then, yeah, your parents would find out. But if you’re just going to pay then, no. Nobody needs to know.
CALLER: Okay. Is there like an age limit for having an abortion?
CLINIC: Nope. How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Not at all?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Did you want the number?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Can you wait a second, and I’ll get it for you?
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. The number is 205-7070. And I’ll give you the address. It’s 6951 Williams Road. And that’s in Niagara Falls, New York, 14304.
CALLER: And that’s the zip code?
CLINIC: Yeah. Where are you calling from?
CALLER: I’m in Medina. Or, yeah.
CLINIC: Medina?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Sorry.
CLINIC: Yeah, they’re right in Niagara County. Do you know where the Sellert (?) Park Mall is in Niagara Falls, like the LaSalle area?
CALLER: I don’t know. I just moved here from Texas, so I don’t know the area very well at all.
CLINIC: Well. Yeah, they’re going to start doing them on Friday.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you know how far along you are?
CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December.
CLINIC: Yeah. They’ll be able to tell you all that there. You’ll get an exam, and they’ll probably do a sonogram as well.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: And do you guys have to tell anybody or anything?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Nope. You can just give them a call.
CALLER: Okay. Is there like any way I could get like birth control or anything?
CLINIC: Yeah. What they’ll do is ask you what type of birth control method you want to use. And then what you can do is just come back here because you’re going to need a post-check three weeks after the abortion. And you come here, make the appointment, and we can put you on birth control, and it’s still confidential.
CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: All right. If like I talk to my boyfriend later, and he has questions, can I talk to you later?
CLINIC: Sure. My name is Cherie.
CALLER: Cherie? All right. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Alright. Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Vicki (sp). How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?
CLINIC: The closest place would be Syracuse or Utica.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Did you need those phone numbers?
CALLER: Yes, please.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on for me.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay, in Syracuse the number is 475-5525. And in Utica it is 724-6146.
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see if I was pregnant, just to make sure?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: It’s just, the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because, well I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m scared.
CLINIC: Okay. Can you come in — I don’t have anything today.
CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do pregnancy tests?
CLINIC: We do them all, I mean anytime during the day.
CALLER: Oh. Is it usually like by appointment or something?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Oh. Well, can I ask you real quick? I’m just worried because like my friend told me — well I’ll be 14 next month.
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: And my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Okay. We have a very strict confidentiality policy. We can’t tell anybody without your okay.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Can you come in next Friday?
CALLER: I think so, but I have to call my boyfriend to see. I mean, he’d be the only way I could — he’d be the only way I could get there.
CLINIC: Okay. Can you do 11:00? Can I put you in for that? And then have you call us back? Or I would like to reserve the spots for you. You know, I would hate to have you call back and say that, yes, you can and not have —
CALLER: Well, what time is it?
CLINIC: I have 11 or 1:00.
CALLER: Oh, today or next week?
CLINIC: Next Friday.
CALLER: Oh. I don’t know. Well, do you know — like if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: You can. We would have to set you up with another appointment though.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: We wouldn’t be able to do all of it on the same day.
CALLER: All right. But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, it’s a — everything that we do here is on our confidentiality basis.
CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried about my parents finding out because like if they knew — like they know my boyfriend. They just don’t know that we’re having sex. But if they found out I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Yeah. Yeah.
CALLER: So they just can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Right. Yeah. We do have very strict confidentiality.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Well —
CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to set up a time, or would you be able to give us a call back today, or —
CALLER: Well, how far are you from Watertown?
CLINIC: From Watertown?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Are you in Watertown?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, because we do have another clinic there.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Okay? Did you want the phone number?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s 788-8065.
CALLER: What’s it called?
CLINIC: It’s Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Well, thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
