CLINIC: McShehan (ph) Medical Center. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It depends on how far you are. Have you had a positive test?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. You need to do that first.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: When was your last period?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: Okay. Right now we are scheduling for — we do procedures on Tuesdays only. It would be Tuesday, 19th of March. And if your dates are correct, the fee would be 400. But if you wait any longer than that, then it’s going to go up to 500.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do the pregnancy test there?
CLINIC: You need to do a pregnancy test first. Yeah, we do do pregnancy tests here. We do them on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays any time between 9 and 4. You have to bring a first-morning urine specimen. Okay? Because the pregnancy hormones are more concentrated in the first-morning urine. Okay? So like next week you can come on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. We’ll run the test, and if it’s positive, then you can make the appointment.
CALLER: My main question is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything —
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: — and you don’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Nope. It’s a law both in Indiana and Michigan that you have to have a parent come and sign to have the abortion procedure. Now, there is a thing called a judicial bypass where you have to go — what state do you live in?
CALLER: I live in Michigan.
CLINIC: Okay. You have to go before a judge, and then he grants you what is call the judicial bypass, then you don’t have to tell your parents. But the problem is you’re running short on time, you know, as far as the fee being more. The only other alternative that you have is you can go to Chicago and have the procedure done there. They do not have parental consent there.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything. But we were talking about it and we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. So how much does a judicial bypass cost?
CLINIC: It doesn’t cost anything that I know of.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if the pregnancy test turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get some birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: Yeah. But there’s a fee for it. You have to have an exam and a pap smear and all that kind of stuff.
CALLER: How much is that?
CLINIC: Well, the initial exam is $75.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. So we just don’t want to worry about all this anymore.
CLINIC: Right, right. But the first thing you need to do is get a pregnancy test, okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: So let’s start there.
CALLER: Do I come in to where you’re at to get one?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay. When do you normally do them?
CLINIC: I just told you. We do them on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but not tomorrow. Okay?
CALLER: Alright.
CLINIC: We’re having a clinic day tomorrow that we normally don’t have. Okay? So it has to be next week, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, any time between 9 and 4. You don’t have to have an appointment for the pregnancy test, but you have to be here between 9 and 4.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how long does it take?
CLINIC: Two minutes.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? It’s just done with a urine test.
CALLER: Oh, alright.
CLINIC: Where do you live? What city do you live in?
CALLER: I live in Three Rivers.
CLINIC: Oh. Well, I was going to say, is there a health department there?
CALLER: I don’t know. My boyfriend just gave me the number to talk to you guys because he would rather go to you.
CLINIC: Well, you can come here for the procedure, but I mean you don’t have to come this far to have a pregnancy test done. If there’s a health department in your town, which there usually should be — you can look in your phone book under your county, okay? The name of your county, and it will tell you where your health department is.
CALLER: Oh. But would they have to tell anybody if I was there for that?
CLINIC: No, no, no. No. They don’t tell people anything. And they offer free pregnancy tests also. Or you can even go to the drug store and buy the at-home tests.
CALLER: Are those usually right though?
CLINIC: Yeah, but you need to read the directions and follow the directions.
CALLER: Oh, alright.
CLINIC: Okay? So you can do that and you can just do it at home.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: If it’s positive, then you call us. Okay? And then we can make an appointment for you and all that stuff.
CALLER: So what was your name again?
CLINIC: My name is Tam (?). Now, the only thing is, like I told you, if you come here, either your mom has to come or your father has to come.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: See? Because it’s a law —
CALLER: But what about the judicial bypass?
CLINIC: Well, if you go do that, then the judge will give you a sheet of paper that says that you have a judicial bypass. And then you have to bring that here with you.
CALLER: And he won’t tell my mom and dad?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. So I guess I’ll just get a pregnancy test, and then call you back, all right?
CLINIC: Yep. Okay.
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. I just called, and I was put on hold. But I was disconnected.
CLINIC: Yeah. I had to take another call that was lengthy.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: The closest place is Grand Rapids or Saginaw. And the number for Grand Rapids is 800-345-1393. And for Saginaw, it is 800-660-6234.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: No? Oh. Well, is there anyway not to have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: You can do a judicial bypass.
CALLER: What is that?
CLINIC: You go to the probate court office and tell them that you want to terminate a pregnancy, that you want a judicial bypass. And they will help you get it. But I’d say with your age and stuff that it would be pretty hard to do.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Are you sure you can’t involve your parents?
CALLER: Yeah. They can’t find out at all. They hate my boyfriend. They just think he’s too old for me. They just hate him. So if they found out, I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: But if you told them that you were pregnant, I mean they would probably help you get the abortion, wouldn’t they?
CALLER: No. I mean, I don’t know what they would — if they found out that I was pregnant — if they found out that I was having sex, they would be furious. I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, I mean they’re going to ask you all kinds of questions when you go in for the judicial bypass. So I mean, just be prepared for that — they’re going to really, really want you to involve your parents. And I mean they really encourage you to do that. Plus too, with it being a case of — I mean, no offense. But legally speaking it’s statutory rape.
CALLER: What is that? I mean I’m not being raped. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: I know, but since you’re 14 and he’s 22, it’s considered statutory rape whether you’re consenting or not.
CALLER: Well, what could happen?
CLINIC: He can go to jail.
CALLER: He could go to jail? I don’t want him to go to jail. He can’t go to jail.
CLINIC: Then I wouldn’t tell anybody — I mean, I wouldn’t tell anybody how old your boyfriend is then.
CALLER: Oh. All right.
CLINIC: Especially if you go to probate court and want to terminate a pregnancy, there will be like a legal investigation if they find out he’s 22 years old.
CALLER: Well, would it be all right to come in and get like a pregnancy test there?
CLINIC: Have you had one yet?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: You haven’t had a pregnancy test yet?
CALLER: No. I’m just scared because like my last period was like December 14th.
CLINIC: Are you using any birth control?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Condoms? Nothing?
CALLER: Uh-uh.
CLINIC: Oh, man. Are you having like breast tenderness?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Any real vague menstrual type cramps?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Nothing like that?
CALLER: Uh-uh.
CLINIC: Are your periods normal? Do you usually have one every month?
CALLER: Usually.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. If you’re not using any birth control, then, yeah, you’re at high risk for pregnancy.
CALLER: Well, could I come and get a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: Let’s see. You know what I’m going to have you do, because — and I know this sounds weird. But right now if you were to give me your name, and I were to write it down in the appointment book because of what you’ve already told me, that your boyfriend is 22 and that you’re 14 and you’re having sex with him, I would be obligated to report that.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: But what I’m going to do. I’m going to hang up the phone. Call back tomorrow and just say I need a pregnancy test; this is my name. And it’s going to be $12 for the pregnancy test. And when you come in, don’t tell anybody that. Otherwise, we’re going to have to like get on the phone and call to report that.
CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me? Because I don’t know how else I would get there.
CLINIC: That’s fine. But I’m just saying —
CALLER: Just don’t tell anybody.
CLINIC: Just don’t tell us.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay? And that way — I mean, that way we don’t have to report it.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: I just don’t want to go through all this again.
CLINIC: I understand.
CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Nope. Because we don’t require parental consent.
CALLER: Okay. Well, could he come and pick up the pills? Because I don’t drive.
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. So we’ll give you a card that tells what kind of pill you’re on and everything and what your name is, and he would have to bring that in every time to pick your pills up.
CALLER: Would he have to sign anything or anything?
CLINIC: No, nothing like that.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Nothing like that. So call tomorrow. And it looks like — if the pregnancy test is negative, we could go ahead and do the whole exam and everything.
CALLER: All right. How much does that cost?
CLINIC: Well, the pregnancy test is definitely $12. But since you’re under 20 years old, your fees are based on your income.
CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job.
CLINIC: So whenever you come in we’ll tell you what the total normally would have been, and then you leave what you’re able to of that. But anything positive pregnancy related, like a pregnancy test, can’t be part of that program. And so that has to be paid in full.
CALLER: Oh. Well, what price is that?
CLINIC: The pregnancy test is 12, and then you leave what you’re able to for the exam.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: You’ve just been so nice. Could I call you back if I had any other questions. What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Ann.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Wendy speaking. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We do not provide that service right now. We will be providing it again probably in the spring. But obviously if you need it now, you can’t wait.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: I can give you phone numbers if you’d like, referrals, or if you know someplace that you already have in mind —
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: — that’s fine too. Okay. Hold on. Let me grab the phone number list, okay?
CALLER: All right.
(short pause)
CLINIC: No, it’s not in here.
CLINIC (Talking To Someone Else): Oh-oh. Your pregnancy options are up on —
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: No, honey. I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to the other lady over here. Where do you live?
CALLER: I live in Howell.
CLINIC: Where honey?
CALLER: I live in Howell.
CLINIC: Howell.
CLINIC (Talking To Someone Else): They’re all with her. I’m doing it now (hollering). Man oh man, she’s all over me like white on rice.
CLINIC: Howell. All right. Let me just read the places and maybe you know which one you’re closer to, okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Westland, Southfield, Clinton township.
CALLER: I don’t know. It doesn’t really matter. I just don’t want anyone to see me go in.
CLINIC: Oh, I don’t think that’s an issue, especially if go somewhere that’s not near your home. So I guess you want someplace that’s not near your home.
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, the one in Detroit is the one I’m most familiar with. They’re the most affordable too.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yes. So let me give you that number. It’s 586-538-2020.
CALLER: My friend told me — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22 —
CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents —
CALLER: — could he take care of that?
CLINIC: No. It doesn’t have anything to do with your boyfriend. But there’s parental consent. And if you’re under the age of 18, then you have got to go — Planned Parenthood had an attorney that worked for us for free, but you’re going to have to ask them at this place called Scotsdale. It’s called Scotsdale Women’s Center. And you’re going to have to ask them how they deal with it. Because they’re going to have to probably get you through the court system which will take a day. And you have an attorney that is appointed to you. And then you have to go in front of a judge and say that you understand what you’re having done, and then that could grant you the permission to get the abortion instead of your parents having to know.
CALLER: Okay. Couldn’t my boyfriend sign anything? He’s 22.
CLINIC: No. In fact, if you mention that he’s 22, he could go to jail.
CALLER: What? What do you mean?
CLINIC: That’s statutory rape, sweetie.
CALLER: What do you mean? He’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: I know, honey. But you’re only 14, and the law says you’ve got to be 16 to have sex. I know. It’s crazy.
CALLER: What could happen?
CLINIC: You don’t want to mention he’s 22, I’m telling ya’.
CALLER: Alright.
CLINIC: Okay? Because they could arrest him.
CALLER: Well, could I come where you’re at and get a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Oh, sure. Yeah, you could come in tomorrow or Thursday or Friday.
CALLER: But he’s got to drive me. Would he get in trouble if he brings me?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: No. Because you’re not going to tell me about him.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: Well, if —
CLINIC: Hold on one second, honey.
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. See, under law we’re suppose to report it. So as far as I’m concern, I don’t know nuttin’, okay?
CALLER: Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant after I get the pregnancy test, do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: Oh, yes.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: That you don’t have to tell your parents. No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: No, you can get an exam. You’d have to come back on a different day probably. But you could get the exam and the birth control pills and everything.
CALLER: Could my boyfriend come and pick up the pills though?
CLINIC: Once you’re a patient here, yes.
CALLER: Yeah?
CLINIC: As long as he has your permission.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: I’ll probably see you tomorrow?
CALLER: Yeah. Well, yeah.
CLINIC: Or Thursday, whatever.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Doctor’s office. This is Women’s Health Center. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering about getting an abortion. And I talked to Allison in Marquette, and she told me to talk to you guys.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Did they give you the 24-hour information?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Because there is a law in Michigan that states that you have to receive abortion information 24 hours or more before you’re able to see the doctor. Were you at a Planned Parenthood?
CALLER: Well, I just called them, and she gave me your number.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. If you’re close by them, you can either get it there or we can mail it or fax it to you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then with getting our name from them, I can give you a fee of — between 6 and 12 weeks, the regular cash fee is $280. And I can give you the fee of 255.
CALLER: Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?
CLINIC: We do an ultra sound. And we judge your appointment by when you started your last normal period.
CALLER: Oh. Well, that was January 15th.
CLINIC: January 15th. Okay. Let’s see. That would put you now at approximately six weeks, maybe just a little bit over.
CALLER: Okay. All right.
CLINIC: Because your most probable time of conception with that period date would have been the very end of January. It doesn’t mean that you couldn’t have gotten pregnant at another time. It’s just that that’s when you would have been the most fertile.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then we have appointments on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You either have to bring in a parent with you or you can go to probate court and get what is called a court waiver of parental — where the court is actually giving you permission to have an abortion.
CALLER: Okay. Do they always give permission?
CLINIC: Yeah, I would say pretty much they do. So what I would do if I were you is look in the phone book under probate court, East (?). And call them, tell them what you need. And they should have all the information right there. Now, I know in the Saginaw area all it is is you go in and talk to a judge in the judge’s office and explain why you feel you can’t talk to your mom or dad about the pregnancy. They give you a legal document saying that they are giving you permission.
CALLER: Do I need like a lawyer for that though?
CLINIC: No, no.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does it cost?
CLINIC: They don’t charge for that.
CALLER: Oh, all right. So I could just come there and do that?
CLINIC: Well, you’d go to probate court.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s where you have to talk to the probate judge. So I would look in your phone book under probate court and call them.
CALLER: Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this. And he said he would pay cash for everything. But after like I go to court and whatever and they say it’s okay, could we come there, and he would pay for everything?
CLINIC: Yeah, sure.
CALLER: But would his name have to be on anything? We just don’t want anyone to know about us.
CLINIC: No. His name doesn’t have to be on anything. It would just be your name.
CALLER: Okay. So even if he’s paying, they wouldn’t know?
CLINIC: Yeah. The receipt for it would be under your name.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We have appointments. It’s Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And you have to get your 24-hour information first. So I would check back with Planned Parenthood, tell them you need the 24-hour information, and call probate court, when you can get an appointment.
CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that there beforehand?
CLINIC: Yeah. But the only thing is, I would suggest that you have a pregnancy test before you do anything else.
CALLER: Okay. So I should come there for that then?
CLINIC: Well, if you’re that far away, I would just get one in your area. What city are you in?
CALLER: I’m in Marquette.
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s a long ways from here to come for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. I would get on in your own area if I were you.
CALLER: All right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.
CLINIC: No. We don’t see patients here for birth control.
CALLER: Oh, all right.
CLINIC: But you could probably maybe through Planned Parenthood get some information on that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: All right. Well, if I had any other questions — I need to talk to my boyfriend to see when he can get off work to make an appointment, but can I call him and call you back? What was your name?
CLINIC: Yeah. My name is Janice. Do you have our 800 number?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Do you know of anybody that might?
CLINIC: Uh-huh. We are now referring people to a local provider of only the medical kind of abortion, not surgical.
CALLER: Okay. What’s the difference?
CLINIC: Medical is actually a series of pills, medications that you take, and it’s overseen by the doctor. It’s more of a private way to do it. You take the pills. You’re at home, and you’re under the care of the doctor. She’s not with you, but she’s always in contact with you.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just I’m scared because my last period was like December 14th so.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you had a pregnancy test?
CALLER: What?
CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you taken one yet or?
CALLER: No. Do you guys do that there?
CLINIC: Yeah, we could do that for you. If you wanted to stop in we can do that on a walk-in basis anytime.
CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No, that’s fine. You can stop in and do it. It doesn’t matter and it’s completely confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So if I was going to get an abortion, would they have to say anything to my parents? Like my friend said that my parents would have to sign some stuff, but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?
CLINIC: Probably — there are ways you can do it without letting your parents know.
CALLER: Oh, like how?
CLINIC: Yeah. It’s called a judicial bypass. And what we would do here is set you up with that information to obtain the judicial bypass. And it probably means a consultation with a local — I’m not real sure who it is. It’s a local person that we refer you to.
CALLER: Do I need like a lawyer for that?
CLINIC: Yeah. But it’s right here. We can get all that stuff done for you right here.
CALLER: How much would that cost?
CLINIC: There wouldn’t be any fees for that. What is probably going to cost you is the pregnancy test. It’s $12 here.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But that’s all.
CALLER: Well, like is it all right if my boyfriend brings me to take the pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Yep, that’s fine.
CALLER: Would he have to sign any papers or anything? Because he just doesn’t want anybody to know.
CLINIC: No. No, he doesn’t have to. But you really should stop in. And just let me know at the front window right here that you want to take a walk-in pregnancy test, and we’ll get you started. We’re here until 6 today. If you’re interested in coming tomorrow, we’re here from 10 to 7.
CALLER: Could I come in there today?
CLINIC: Yeah. As long as you get here before like 5:30. You know?
CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: You bet.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No, ma’am.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: You’ve been so helpful. Thanks. But if I had any other questions, could I call you and talk to you?
CLINIC: You bet.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Kate.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And if I’m not here, Jen’s here, or there’s several other people that answer the phone here that can help you.
