CLINIC: (Unclear) office. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along; do you know?

CALLER: Well, not really. I just haven’t my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. It would be 175.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just kind of worried because like, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You’d have to come in and get a waiver through the courts if you want to come in without your parents. You have to come in for some paperwork, and we’ll tell you how you can do it without your parents.

CALLER: All right. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Nothing.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just the thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we decided we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said he would pay for everything in cash. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay.

CLINIC: Just stop in and get — tell them that you want papers for a bypass. And they’ll give you all the paperwork and tell you what you need to do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Because I haven’t had one of those yet so.

CLINIC: That will be $10.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, when do you normally do those?

CLINIC: (unclear) You’ve missed very long enough. You can come in and have it done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what are your hours?

CLINIC: 9 to 4:30 during the week, the weekdays, and 8 to 11:30 Saturday morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do I need an appointment or anything?

CLINIC: No. It’s just walk in.

CALLER: Could I come in on Saturday then?

CLINIC: You can, but it’s our busiest day. You may be waiting a while.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It’s our busiest day. We don’t have patients in the afternoon however. During the afternoon from like 2 and 4:30, there’s no one here. It’s up to you. You’re welcome to come in on Saturday, but we’re very busy.

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend works during the week, and that would be the only time I could get there. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there too?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. But how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: You have to have a pap smear done, and it would be $90.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, all right. So you sure nobody would have to know about me and my boyfriend?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. Judicial bypass? No.

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure the judge would say it’s all right?

CLINIC: That I can’t guarantee. That’s up to him.

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: This is Jenai (ph), but I won’t be here this afternoon. Anyone who answers the phone can help you with that.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: You might want to call the Women’s Center. That’s 230-1300.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if there’s an age requirement for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’d have to call there.

CALLER: Okay. Like my friend told me to come and talk to you guys actually. Do you guys do the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you’re already talking about getting a termination, you don’t already know the result of the test?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I just missed my period, and I’m scared. So I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we can do a test for you.

CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: Five dollars.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if I’m going to be 14 in March?

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents and —

CLINIC: No, we don’t. All of our information is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend actually wanted me to call and figure all this out. But he was wondering if you guys have to know that he’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. It’s not our business. Okay?

CALLER: So like when do you guys do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: You can come in anytime between 9 and 5:30.

CALLER: Do I need to make an appointment or anything?

CLINIC: Nope, it’s on a walk-in basis.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, no one has to know anything or anything if I’m getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. Nobody but you and whoever you bring with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We certainly do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, we won’t tell anything. Like I said, everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? It will just be between you and us. Okay? And the only time somebody would know something is if you tell him.

CALLER: Okay. If I needed anything else, could I talk to you again?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. And your name was Mary?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Kendall (?) Planned Parenthood. This is Kim. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We refer to the Heritage Clinic for that. We don’t perform abortions at this location.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: 458-3694.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that like — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever that is?

CLINIC: No, he can’t. Actually, there’s something called the protection (unclear) under age 18. And you can actually petition the courts to waive that.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: To go to the courts?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Nothing.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So like do I need to get a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: Actually, you can contact Heritage Clinic, and they should have some information for you to do something called the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t really done a pregnancy test like at all. Do you guys have that there?

CLINIC: We do by appointment only. And I can tell you right now, you could go to the Cherry Street Planned Parenthood, they have a walk in today from 3 to 6 for teens. And you should go there and get a pregnancy test if you don’t know.

CALLER: Oh. Well, does anybody have to know that I’m there doing a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Would it be all right like if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Could he be there with me and everything?

CLINIC: Yep, at Cherry Street Planned Parenthood from 3 to 6.

CALLER: Okay. My friend just told me to go to you guys so.

CLINIC: Go to the Cherry Street Planned Parenthood. We do the same things, and they have a walk-in, and you need to get it done as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test there said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come to you guys and get some birth control?

CLINIC: You could stay there and get some birth control. We do the same thing.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, do you know if they would have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: That’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: This is Cathy. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling because — well, I called the other one and I talked to Kim, and she said to call you guys. But I was wondering about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: She told you to call us?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You would call Heritage Clinic.

CALLER: Well, she said to call you guys to get like the pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Oh. Okay. Yeah, I can set you up an appointment for one.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age requirement for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll have to get parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just do whatever that is?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so I couldn’t get a pregnancy test done without —

CLINIC: Oh, yes. You can do the pregnancy test, but as far as the abortion, there’s a law that you need parental consent or you could try to get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want anybody to find out about me and my boyfriend, so my parents can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, then you’d have to try to go through a judicial bypass in order to be able to get an abortion without parental consent.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: That’s where you have to go in front of a judge to explain your situation, and he could okay you getting an abortion without parental consent.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: That I’m not sure. When you come in we can give you information on it and you could call and find out.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if my boyfriend can bring me in for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I have openings. I have a 9 or 10:30 tomorrow. Otherwise I have some openings on Friday.

CALLER: Okay. I’d have to — I’ll probably try and see if I can come in at 10 tomorrow, but.

CLINIC: 10:30?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: And your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Okay. Then we’ll see you tomorrow at 10:30.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep. Then you would set up an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: But does anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Um-um.

CALLER: All right. Well —

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Like would it be all right like if my boyfriend picked it up because I don’t — if he picked up like the birth control pills?

CLINIC: No, you would have to. He could bring you in to pick it up.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Or we could look at other methods like the shot.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: But when you come in tomorrow we’ll do the pregnancy test, get you all set with that. And then we’ll schedule you an appointment for an exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And then we — tomorrow just ask for information on the different methods, and that way you can look through them and see which one might work for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know where we’re located?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend knows.

CLINIC: Okay. Then we’ll see you tomorrow at 10:30.

CALLER: Okay, thank you.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Heritage Clinic for Women. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Well, it varies a lot depending on the length of pregnancy. Are you calling for yourself?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you have any idea when the first day of your last period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re still going to be in the first trimester there. It looks like you’d probably be, probably about in your 10th week right now.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Up through the 12th week, it’s all one price. Do you have insurance or Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. He said he would pay for everything. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, there’s actually a law in the state of Michigan that you have to either have consent from your parents — like a parent would have to come with you — or you can go through the court system and get what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: What you do is you would just go to the court system and fill out some papers. And then an attorney would help you out. And you’d have a hearing with the judge. And at that point, the judge just needs to decide if you’re mature enough to make this decision on your own or if there’s like a reason why it would put your life at risk or, you know, be a really bad thing to tell your parents about it. They usually grant that, and they give you some papers. And then you can just come with the papers.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Usually the judicial bypass is free.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So you probably won’t have to worry about that. The abortion itself would probably be $440.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that goes up until the 12th week. You said January —

CALLER: Third.

CLINIC: Third?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’ll probably have until the end of March for it to still be that same price.

CALLER: Well, do you know if the judge ever says no or anything?

CLINIC: I can only think of one time when the judge has ever said no, so it’s pretty rare.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But you can definitely try that before resorting to telling your parents.

CALLER: Yeah, okay.

CLINIC: What county do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Lowell. I’m not sure which county that is.

CLINIC: I’m not sure what county that is either. Let me put you on hold for one second, and I’ll find out, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. My name is Anna. I’ll be back with you in one second.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. Lowell’s in Kent County. So the person you’d want to call, her name is Crystal. Her phone number is 632-5055. You need to tell her that you need a judicial bypass. Sometimes they call it something else, and I can’t think of what that is. But just tell her that you’re under 18, and you’re trying to get an abortion without your parents’ permission, and she’ll be able to help you out with that. Probably what you’ll just need to do is, you know, if you can get a ride down there to see her, you’ll just meet with her, and then meet with a judge a couple days later. And then you’ll be all set. They’ll just give you some papers, and you can either come in here and set up an appointment or you can just give us a call, and we can help you out with that part too.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend and me were talking about all this, and he said that he was going to pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. Everything here is going to be confidential. You don’t have to worry. There’s no way that anyone could get any of the information that you give us here except for you, unless you give your permission. So like your parents could never come here and say, ‘look, I think my daughter was here, give me her records,’ or something like that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: You wouldn’t have to worry about that.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys be able to do that there?

CLINIC: Yep. You need to have a pregnancy test before you get the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You can even just take a home test, like buy one at like the pharmacy.

CALLER: Oh, really? Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yeah. They’re actually very, very accurate.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: It probably would be easiest for you and cheapest for you if you went to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Have you ever heard of those places?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Let me give you another phone number– 616-459-3101. And they’re a great place to go for birth control. Especially like — you probably don’t have job?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: School and stuff. Especially like — that’s just the cheapest way to go, on your income. So that will probably be the best place to go for birth control because here it will be more expensive.

CALLER: But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. So you’re sure if I come to your place that nobody would have to know about me or my boyfriend or any of this?

CLINIC: No. The only people that would know are us who work here.

CALLER: All right. And your name was Ann?

CLINIC: Anna.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you have any — just call back. You can ask for me. But if I’m busy or with someone, that’s fine. Anyone who you talk to will be able to help you out with that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thanks, Lisa.

CALLER: Thanks.
