CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December. I did a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and it said I was positive.
CLINIC: Okay. You’re going to probably want to call Des Moines then, and see what kind of options they have for you.
CALLER: Okay. If I talk to my boyfriend later on today, and he has questions, is it all right if I call you back and talk to you?
CLINIC: Yeah, you can. Or else you can call Des Moines too because they’ll probably have a little bit more information for you.

CALLER: Do you have to be a specific age for that?
CLINIC: No. If you’re a minor we have to have some sort of parental notification. You may not need permission but you have to have a form filled out signed by a parent or a guardian.
CALLER: Is there any way not to do that? Like I can’t tell my parents at all because like the problem is my boyfriend is 22 and we’re in love and we’re going to get married, but my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: Okay. Then you’ll have to what they call a judicial bypass. What that basically is is you go, you call the circuit of the clerk, clerk of the circuit court I believe is what it is, in Scott County here. And basically they’ll just — I have to give you information or we have to provide some information before you actually see the judge because it will basically fill you in on how you need to answer questions and what not when you see the judge for a judicial bypass.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And usually they’ll put you through as Jane Doe so it’s all confidential for you. And the judge will basically grant you that once you answer the questions.
CALLER: Okay. So do I have to tell them about my boyfriend or anything?
CLINIC: No. Basically they’ll ask why you want the abortion, and you know you’ll have to answer the questions properly and why you don’t want to talk to your parents about it or why you can’t talk to your parents about it, things like that. So I’m not going to tell you to make up any stories or whatever, but whatever answer you give will determine whether or not they can grant you a judicial bypass.
CALLER: How do I know what answers to give them?
CLINIC: I just said I have information for you that you can pick up or I can send to you, or whichever you like to do, make an appointment. That way you’ll be, you’ll be prepared to do so.
CALLER: Okay. Do I have to get a lawyer for that or anything?
CLINIC: No, no. You have to just talk to the clerk of the circuit court. You call them up and they’ll set you up an appointment to go in and see the judge.
CALLER: Okay. And do they ever say no or anything?
CLINIC: So far they haven’t. I haven’t any experience in that at all, you know. People that have actually gone through it haven’t had any problems. But, you know, you have to make sure you get your information and once, before you actually see the judge that day.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Did you want to set up an appointment?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work to know when to come in, but do you guys do like pregnancy tests there?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Yeah? Would you have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: Um-um. Everything we do here is confidential.
CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CLINIC: And whether they send you home with pills; or if you choose like a depo or Lunel (sp) shot. Those are a little more expensive than birth control pills, but they’ll send you home with something that day.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You could just pick them up. They may send you home with three packs. That would be three months worth. You could come to our clinic and then just pick them up every three months or every couple months.
CALLER: How much would it cost?
CLINIC: Do you work at all?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: They could be anywhere from $5 to $8 a month.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Would it be all right like if my boyfriend came and picked up like the other ones? Like if he came up and picked up the birth control?
CLINIC: Yeah. Once either patients who have abortions get a prescription that day and you leave with them, or we wouldn’t be able to see you, you know, while you were pregnant. So it would have to be — or you wait after the abortion, come in here and have an appointment, and then we get you started on a method.

CLINIC: So, you know, most — it’s going to be you who has to be in here.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: So. But after that, then if you need him to pick them up, he can always stop in the office and get them.

CLINIC: You can. We would need to do a yearly gyn exam, a pap test, and then we could put you on birth control pills.
