CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah, hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: You do? How much does that cost?

CLINIC: If you’re 12 weeks, it’s $515. If you’re over 12 weeks, it’s $615. If you’re over 14 weeks, it’s $715.

CALLER: Okay. How do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I think it was like — it was before Christmas. I guess — it’s probably like — I’m guessing like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. You could be about almost 12 weeks.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: So you need to — where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Wilson.

CLINIC: Where?

CALLER: Wilson.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to call the closest office that’s closest — where’s that close to?

CALLER: I’m not sure. I don’t really know the area very well.

CLINIC: Well, you need to find out the closest one —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — and make an appointment there. Like we have them in Torrington, West Hartford, Willimantic, Waterbury.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you need to find out which one’s the closest to you.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Well, my main thing is, my friend told me that they have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: Not if you have the money. Your parents don’t have to be involved.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just problems. I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Right. No, we can’t tell your parents without your permission.

CALLER: Okay. Is there like — you wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No. We don’t have to tell anyone. But you need to tell your parents because you need to have an adult that’s supportive.

CALLER: I can’t tell my parents. My boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married. They just — they hate him. We can’t —

CLINIC: I guess so, if he’s 22 and you’re only 14.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: I said, I guess they would, honey. You’re only 14 years old.

CALLER: Well, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, sweetie, let me just explain something to you. If your parents want to get him in trouble, they can, because you are 14 years of age. He is considered an adult.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You need to tell someone because that is statutory rape.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You’re under age. So don’t ever say that we’re in love, because your parents are not going to want to hear that.

CALLER: Well, they don’t ever understand anything.

CLINIC: Well, hon, this is one time, if they cause a problem, they can have your boyfriend arrested. So you just think about that.

CALLER: What can I do?

CLINIC: You need to go and confide in your mom and tell her that you —

CALLER: But she won’t — she doesn’t listen. She’s just —

CLINIC: Well, what are you going to do? Wait until you’re too far, and then tell her?

CALLER: Well, like, I was gonna get an abortion and —

CLINIC: Does your boyfriend have $515?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Well then, you need to find out — hold on. Where are you from?

CALLER: I live in Wilson.

CLINIC: Hold on. Where’s Wilson? Okay. The closest one to you would be South Norwalk.

CALLER: Okay. You have the number for that?

CLINIC: Okay. Or Danbury. Let me give you the phone number, and you can find out which one’s closest.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. You’ve got a pencil?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. South Norwalk is 853-2605. And the one in Danbury — you ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 743-2446.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Let me know how you make out.

CALLER: Well, what do I —

CLINIC: Call them up and ask them. And tell them that you think you’re pregnant, and you’d like to come in for a pregnancy test because you don’t want to keep the baby.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Can I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah, I’ll be here, honey. My name’s Yvonne. I’ll be here until 7:30 tonight.

CALLER: 7:30?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, honey. I’m not going to tell anyone.

CALLER: If it ended up like I wasn’t —

CLINIC: Well then, you know what? Why don’t you come in here and have your pregnancy test?

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: You know how to get to Stanford?

CALLER: Well, like, no one would have to know?

CLINIC: No one has to know.

CALLER: Okay. What if I wasn’t pregnant? Like what if —

CLINIC: You want to go on birth control. Is that what you said?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you can do that too.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No, we’re not going to tell anyone.

CALLER: Okay. Because I just don’t want to get in trouble.

CLINIC: So you need to get on the thruway like you’re going to New York.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Get off at Exit 9. Take a right once you get to the light. And we’re on the left-hand side, about a mile down the road.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’ll be here until 7:30, so come in before then.

CALLER: Is it okay if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah, he can bring you.

CALLER: Okay. And no one has to know anything?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll see you when you get here.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do them here. Planned Parenthood’s other locations does them.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have a number for another place that does it?

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in New Hartford.

CLINIC: You could go to New Haven or you could go to West Hartford. Do you want the number?

CALLER: Do you have the West Hartford? Yes, please.

CLINIC: The West Hartford number is 860-353-6201. And New Haven is 203-387-3131.

CALLER: I’m just kind of worried. Cause i’m going to be 14 on the 20th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents that I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: It has nothing to do with him. Well, I would call those numbers right away and see how quickly they can take you; because it really depends on their schedule. We also have numbers for other places that can take you a little farther along. Have you had an exam and everything yet?

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period for a while so I’m worried.

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, I mean you could come in here and have that kind of stuff done, and we could do a sizing to figure out how far along you are.

CALLER: Oh, really? But would anybody have to know if I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. It’s confidential.

CALLER: The thing is my boyfriend has to bring me, so would that be okay if he was there?

CLINIC: It’s fine. Let me put you on hold, and we’ll see how soon we could get you in.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s a sliding fee scale, so it’s based on your income. Are you a teenager?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I’m going to be 14 on the 20th.

CLINIC: It would probably be no charge.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But I can’t promise.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So hold on a minute.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Was I talking to you earlier?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I don’t know who I was talking to, but I was just asking about getting an abortion. Do you know if —

CLINIC: We were suppose to schedule you for something. What are we scheduling you for?

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. What time do you normally do those?

CLINIC: Whenever you want to schedule it. You want to do a pregnancy test, and then you want to have a pre-AB exam?

CALLER: Yeah. If it ended up that I was pregnant, yeah.

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: If it ended up that I was pregnant, yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. So next Monday the 11th I have a 12:30, 12:45, 1:15, 1:30, 1:45.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I have to call my boyfriend to find out when he can bring me. Could I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. Monday early afternoon or early evening. And that’s the 11th, and ask for Cindy.

CALLER: For Cindy?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not in this office. In the New Haven office and the West Hartford office.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Sure, which one?

CALLER: The New Haven one.

CLINIC: Sure. Can you hold on for one minute?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Well, could I come in to where you’re at and get a pregnancy test just to make sure though?

CLINIC: Yes, you do need to do that before you go down to the —

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Fifteen dollars. Do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s $15 then.

CALLER: Okay. If the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you could.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, well do you know how much it costs?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. (laughs)

CALLER: How much does it?

CLINIC: $515.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just kind of worried because like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: (silence) We wouldn’t have to tell your parents, no. Hold one second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You just gave me more information than what I needed, okay?

CALLER: Oh, like what?

CLINIC: Which was not a good thing.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? The fact that your boyfriend is 22 and the fact that you’re 14, that makes us mandated, we’re mandated reporters. That means we have to report that.

CALLER: To who?

CLINIC: To the, to, to the Department of Children and Families.

CALLER: Oh. What could happen?

CLINIC: He could get in trouble.

CALLER: What kind? Like I don’t want him to get in trouble.

CLINIC: I know, hon, but that’s what could happen. So I just —

CALLER: Oh. What should I do?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I can’t advise you on that. I mean, you know, all I can tell you is if you come in here that’s what we’re going to have to do because — (silence) Hold one second, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So I don’t know. You’d have to discuss that with him or your parents or something.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just can’t tell my parents at all though, like they know we’re going out, but they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Well, and they don’t have a problem with you going out with a 22-year-old?

CALLER: Well, they don’t really like him, but — but he works with my dad. I mean, they know him and everything.

CLINIC: I know, honey, but it doesn’t — that doesn’t change the fact that we would have to report it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would I be able to come in there for a pregnancy test and you wouldn’t have to report anything?

CLINIC: As long as I don’t know who you are and I don’t know — you know, I don’t know how old your boyfriend is. But the point is, is if we know then, you know, we have to report that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You’re underage, and that’s, you know, statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know, honey. That doesn’t matter. That’s just — it’s the way the law sees it.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: And we’re obligated to follow the law.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up like if I came in for the pregnancy test and it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get on birth control though?

CLINIC: You could. But if we know he’s 22 we still have to report it.

CALLER: Oh. So if you didn’t know then it would be okay?

CLINIC: It’s not that it’s okay. It’s just what we don’t know we don’t know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But — you know.

CALLER: All right. Well, I need to call him and — what time do you normally do like pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: They’re walk-in, but we’re not open this afternoon.

CALLER: Oh, and when are you open again?

CLINIC: We’re open again on Monday at 12:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I need to — if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: No, you can just call and talk to any of us.

TAPE – 613

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do not do abortions here. We see people before. If they want to have an abortion, we can do the pregnancy test. But you need to do an exam before you have an abortion. So we can do that here, and then refer you to another Planned Parenthood that would perform the actual procedure.

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Would you have to tell anybody if he took care of it?

CLINIC: Your age is not an issue here. So it would be between you and us.

CALLER: It’s just he said that he would pay for everything. And we were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. So if he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Not at all. Have you had a positive test at home?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just kind of worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since December 26th, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Is that unusual for you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What we’ll probably have you come down to do is we’ll do a pregnancy test. And if you definitely know that you want to have an abortion, then we can kind of talk about your options and the different kinds of abortions if you do have a positive test. And we can even do the exam that day if we schedule that in. If you do a positive test, we can do the exam that day.

CALLER: Well, do you think it’s possible that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Are you having any symptoms of pregnancy? Are you nauseous or vomiting or do you have any breast tenderness?

CALLER: No. If I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Um-hmm, definitely. What we could have you do, we’ll set up an appointment where the first thing that we’ll do is the pregnancy test. And then depending on what the results of that are — we’ll know while you’re here today if it’s positive — then we can go ahead and do the counseling and the pre-abortion exam. It doesn’t mean that you have to have it done if you change your mind. But we can go through with that. And if your test is negative, then we can go ahead and do a regular exam and get you on some birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Does that sound good?

CALLER: And nobody would have to know anything about any of this?

CLINIC: Correct. Do you want to go ahead and schedule that?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see when he could bring me. But what times are you normally open?

CLINIC: You’re in school, right?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled, so just whenever.

CLINIC: But you don’t want your parents to know?

CALLER: Well, I could say I’m going to the museum or something.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re here Monday between 8:45 and 5; the same thing with Friday. We’re basically all day Monday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday we’re only here in the afternoon, and then we’ll here until 7:30 at night. Wednesday we’re only here in the afternoon. So it’s kind of different everyday.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Nope, that’s fine.

CALLER: You sure nobody would have to know anything about all this?

CLINIC: Not your parents.

CALLER: Well, anyone besides my parents?

CLINIC: No, everything’s confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It would really just be you and whoever sees you here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I call you back and make an appointment after I talk to my boyfriend? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yep. My name’s Arga (ph).

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
