CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, not at this site. I can give you the West Hartford number.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s 953-6201.
CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 on the 20th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, they don’t tell your parents. You don’t need parental consent.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?
CLINIC: Where? At his clinic?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Yeah, you can come in if you want. We’re here to 6:45 today.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had my period since January 3rd, and I’m just really scared.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would you have to tell anybody if we were there?
CLINIC: No, you don’t have to — well, you know, just the counselor who takes you in. But you don’t have to tell anybody.
CALLER: Okay. So if he was paying for everything he wouldn’t have to sign any papers or anything?
CLINIC: Hold on. You said you’re 13?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And he’s 22?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Can you hold on one minute, please?
CALLER: All right.
(short pause)
CLINIC: Okay. Hello?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: I was just told if you do come in and you do proceed — you’re only 13 you said — we would have to report you for that.
CALLER: To who? What do you mean?
CLINIC: I’m sorry?
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: Because you’re under age and he’s over 18.
CALLER: Well, what should I do?
CLINIC: I really don’t know what you can do. I can give you the number to West Hartford and maybe they can talk to you about what you can do.
CALLER: So I can’t come in there for a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: Well, if you come in and they start asking you questions, they can report you because you’re a minor.
CALLER: Well, what would happen?
CLINIC: He would be reported to the authorities because he’s older and you’re a minor.
CALLER: Well, what can happen to him?
CLINIC: He could probably — I really couldn’t tell you what can happen. He can really get into trouble.
CALLER: Oh. So if I don’t bring him would it be better then?
CLINIC: I mean, you can come in, and just don’t say how old he is.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. So I could come in for a pregnancy test and just not say anything, and it would be all okay?
CLINIC: Hold on one minute, okay?
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Yep. When you come in just don’t say how old he is.
CALLER: So I could come in and get a pregnancy test and it would be all okay?
CLINIC: Yep, and just don’t tell them how old he is.
CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there too?
CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that.
CALLER: How much does that cost?
CLINIC: When you come in, you’re under age, so it wouldn’t be a cost to you. But you would have to make an appointment in order to start on birth control pills.
CALLER: The thing is I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to bring me?
CLINIC: He can probably, but just don’t say how old he is.
CALLER: But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Not for that. Just don’t say how old he is, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Are you still there?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Well, I need to talk to my boyfriend and see. What time are you guys normally open?
CLINIC: On Mondays and Thursdays we’re open from 11 to 6:45; Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 to 12; and the Friday, 9:30 to 4.
CALLER: So I need to call him and see. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: Yeheira (ph).
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right then.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. I can give you a number for the West Hartford.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Let me put you on hold, okay?
CALLER: All right.
(short pause)
CLINIC: Okay. Have you ever had this done, ma’am?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. When did you have a positive pregnancy test done?
CALLER: I haven’t. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd. So that’s why I’m worried about all this, and I’m just kind of —
CLINIC: You didn’t do a pregnancy test or you did?
CALLER: I haven’t done one.
CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you come in for a pregnancy test, and then we’ll see how far along you are.
CALLER: Okay. Well, what times do you normally do that?
CLINIC: We’re open from 12 to 7 today. And you don’t need an appointment for that, to do a pregnancy test.
CALLER: I was talking to my boyfriend and all. It’s just the thing is, my friend told me that you guys would have to — I’m going to be 14 next month. And my boyfriend told me that — my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. He said that he would take care of everything. Would that be all right if he took care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Well, when you come in I would feel more comfortable talking to you about it. And I wouldn’t — you wouldn’t talk about that right now. We’re not going to talk about that right now.
CALLER: Well, if I came in there, would you have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: No. Everything’s kept confidential just so you know. The only thing that we would — I don’t know if she told you why we need to tell your parents, but everything’s kept confidential.
CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell my parents if I was getting an abortion?
CLINIC: No. We’re not suppose to. It’s basically your responsibility.
CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all about anything?
CLINIC: No. It’s basically your decision.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: We’re open from 12 to 7 today.
CALLER: Today?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today?
CLINIC: Well, we don’t do the walk-ins where we hand out pills right away. We need to make an appointment for that, because if you haven’t had a period in over two months, we need to find out what’s going on. It could be something else going on.
CALLER: Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through all this again.
CLINIC: Well, we need to find out what’s going on. So I would first come in for a pregnancy test, and if you are pregnant, then we’ll go from there. If you’re not pregnant, we need to make an appointment because you could have a possible infection that hasn’t been treated. So why don’t we take it one at a time. And I would feel more comfortable if you came in by yourself.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Okay? Don’t give any information out, don’t bring your partner in. I would definitely recommend you not bringing in your partner.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Just yourself. As far as driving, that’s fine.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But I’m saying I would prefer you not bringing your partner. And I’ll explain it to you when you come in. Okay?
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: Lily.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: We’re open from 12 to 7, so you can come in the morning today.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What’s your name?
CALLER: It’s Lisa.
CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. We’ll see you then.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. The closest is New Haven or West Hartford.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have that number for the one in New Haven?
CLINIC: Sure. You’ve had a test done?
CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I’m just kind of scared.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, I think the best thing would be to come in for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. We don’t have to tell anyone. Why don’t you come in for the test?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to come in today?
CALLER: What time today?
CLINIC: We do them between 1 and 3.
CALLER: 1 and 3?
CLINIC: Yep.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend works from 8 to 5. Is there any other day?
CLINIC: Yes. You can come in Wednesday after 5; 5 to 6:30 we do them.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, let me call him and see. But if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?
CLINIC: Well, we can make an appointment for an exam. That’s just for the test that we can do that.
CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No. No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.
CLINIC: Right. Okay. We’ll see you on Wednesday.
CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: Yes. My name is Glenda, but there will be other people that can give you any information.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: It’s not just one person.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But we have all the information about all the methods of birth control.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And it sounds like you want to be protected.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: So come in on Wednesday. And we always have condoms available.
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was on hold and I had to hang up the phone because my friend’s mom came in. But —
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, please.
CALLER: Well, do you know like if — do you know if there’s a specific age to have an abortion?
CLINIC: (unclear). How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was wondering like — well, do you have to be a specific age to get an abortion? Like I’ll be 14 later on this month.
CLINIC: No, not within the state of Connecticut.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents and stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is it okay if he signs whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: None of that matters here, hon.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You can come here and it doesn’t matter.
CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, so how much did you say that it was?
CLINIC: It’s between 4 and 7, depending on how far along you are.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how do you know how far along you are?
CLINIC: You do the exam and ultrasound here.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just the main reason why I’m scared about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like January 3, and I’m just really worried.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you live in the New Haven area?
CALLER: I live in Northford.
CLINIC: Northford? So you’re closer to where, Meridon?
CALLER: I think — well, I think I’m closer to you guys, so.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to schedule an appointment here?
CALLER: Well, I would have to call my boyfriend to see, but — because he would be the only way to take me.
CLINIC: Okay, talk to him, and why don’t you guys call me together and we’ll schedule an appointment for you to come in?
CALLER: Well, it’s just — the thing is, me and him were talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. If he was paying for everything —
CLINIC: Everything is confidential here, hon. I just need you to check with him on his schedule and call me to schedule an appointment.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if he was paying for everything would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, when do you normally do appointments?
CLINIC: Monday through Saturday.
CALLER: What time?
CLINIC: Can you check on his schedule with him first and then we’ll figure out the best time for you to come in?
CALLER: Okay. Well if —
CLINIC: Hold on, please? Do you know his schedule enough to schedule an appointment now?
CALLER: Well, no. He usually works 8 to 5 though.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to come in for the exam and everything — do you know that you are pregnant?
CALLER: Huh?
CLINIC: Do you know that you’re pregnant?
CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period —
CLINIC: You just haven’t had your period, okay. So do you want to come in for a urine test today?
CALLER: I don’t know. What time today?
CLINIC: What time could you come in?
CALLER: Well, how late are you open today?
CLINIC: We take our last appointment at 6:30.
CALLER: I could probably make it in before then.
CLINIC: Okay. What time can you come in?
CALLER: Let me call him and see. But if ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, you can.
CALLER: Would I be able to get that today?
CLINIC: No. We’d need to schedule you for another appointment.
CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No, hon. No one’s going to know that you come here.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, let me call my boyfriend and call you back. What was your name?
CLINIC: You don’t have to call us back, honey. Just come in before 6:30, okay?
CALLER: To make the appointment?
CLINIC: You can just come in before 6:30.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: What was your name if I had to —
