CLINIC: Family Planning?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: From 6 to 12 weeks it’s $380, and then after 12 weeks it goes up depending on how far along you are.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Do you know the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: That was a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah. Okay.

CLINIC: Going by that date would put you right now about nine weeks. It would be $380, and it’s a one-day procedure.

CALLER: Oh, okay. How long does it take?

CLINIC: It takes about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. The procedure only takes about three to five minutes, but you’re in our office for about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Did you want to schedule an appointment?

CALLER: The thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah, I don’t think that that would be a problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re only 13 right now?

CALLER: Yeah. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: I don’t think it will be a problem. Just a lot of times when people are that young they recommend that you have a parent or a relative with you.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have anybody. I mean, I can’t tell my parents at all, and I don’t have any other relatives.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s no parental consent law in Arizona, so I don’t think there should be a problem.

CALLER: My boyfriend and — we were talking about this. And he said he would pay cash for everything, but he doesn’t want anybody to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. If he’s going to pay cash, that’s not a problem.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you guys do like a pregnancy test before just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah. Have you had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for a while, and I’m just kind of scared.

CLINIC: Okay. We don’t like to schedule an appointment until you’ve had a pregnancy test. But you can buy one in the drug store if you’d like, an over-the-counter test, or you can come in to — our lab is open in our Phoenix office Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 in the morning, and then in our (unclear), the office is opened just from 1 to 2:30 on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon.

CALLER: Okay. How much does it cost to get a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Fifteen dollars.

CALLER: If it came up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. Then we could schedule you an appointment to come in for a pap smear and get you on birth control.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. I just wish I could talk to my mom like I can talk to you.

CLINIC: Yeah. Just come on in to our office, and we’ll run a pregnancy test and go from there, okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Beth.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood, Melrose (ph). This is Susan. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this particular clinic. I can give you — where are you located?

CALLER: I’m in Cave Creek.

CLINIC: Cave Creek. What’s the closest surgery place to Cape Creek be? Seventh Street? Okay, I’m going to give you our Seventh Street and Montebello (sp) phone number. That is 602-277-1168 or 1169. Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a question real quick? I’m just really worried because like I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Can you hold? You’re 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you have a minute to hold on the phone? I’m going to make a phone call to one of our pregnancy options counselors and see what she has to say?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Hold one second, all right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks. Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Hi. What would happen is, yes we would have to report it, but whether or not CPS does anything that is up to them, but we do have to report it. It does have to be reported.

CALLER: Oh. Why?

CLINIC: It’s the law of Arizona.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any place — well —

CLINIC: As far as I know, any place that you do go by law should have to be reporting it.

CALLER: Oh. So, I couldn’t get a pregnancy test either?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, you could come in and get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, would you have to report that though?

CLINIC: Do you know for sure if you’re pregnant or not?

CALLER: Well, no, that’s why —

CLINIC: You think you may be but you’re not sure.

CALLER: I just haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Are you gaining weight and feeling like your breasts tender and you feel different?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No?

CALLER: I just haven’t had my period.

CLINIC: The end of December (speaking to PP).

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second, all right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks. (pause) — pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, if you just come in as a, just doing a pregnancy test and you’re not an actual Planned Parenthood patient, we would not have to report it. Once you become a Planned Parenthood patient, if you’re seen by the clinician then we would have to report it.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? But just coming in for a pregnancy test, you are not required to see a clinician.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant would I be able to get birth control though?

CLINIC: Yes, but I don’t — I do believe we would have to report it then.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But we just fill out a form, call CPS, and we let them know what’s going on, and —

CALLER: Well, when you not have to report it?

CLINIC: When would we not have to report it?

CALLER: What’s the age limit for not having to report it? Like I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Right, I know that, but you’re 13 now and he’s 22. And by law, anybody over the age of 18 having intercourse with anybody 13 or under, it has to be reported.

CALLER: So it’s because you know about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if I — would it be better just not to say anything about him?

CLINIC: That’s up to you.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But if you do want to come in for a pregnancy test, they are $10.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s a walk-in basis. You do not need an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And today we are doing them up until 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if he brought me today, would I be able to get in there and you guys would be able to do it today, or —

CLINIC: Oh, what, the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes. It’s a walk-in basis up until 5:00 this evening.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I call and ask you before I came in?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. You were Susan?

CLINIC: Yes, I am.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thanks a lot. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Yeah. Just some — yeah. Some, whatever. Or, he’s your guardian or something.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I come in there for a pregnancy test just to see if I am pregnant? I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26.

CLINIC: December 26? Yeah, you can come in and take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: We do them from 3:00 to 5:00.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, the thing is, I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: About 15 minutes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I get birth control right away if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You’d have to set up an appointment.

CALLER: Well, how long does it take for that?

CLINIC: Right now we’re booking to the ending of March.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are. How many weeks pregnant are you?

CALLER: I don’t know. I just haven’t had my period for awhile. So.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Well, do you happen to remember the first day of your last menstrual period?

CALLER: Well, I think it was like — it was December 21st, so.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Well, that’s good. Let me see. December 21st, and then today’s the 27th of February. That puts you 10 weeks. That would be $380 if we could get you in before you turn 12 weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes. If you’re already 12 weeks or more, the price goes up to $800.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Right. But for right now though, you are 10 weeks. That means you have two weeks.

CALLER: Well, do you know — I’m just worried about it because like my friend told me — like I’m going to be 14 years old in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: How old are you again? 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You will be 14 in March. You know what? Let me check. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hi. Thanks for holding.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: You want to make an appointment?

CALLER: I was wanting to know if like they would have to tell my parents about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No. There’s nothing about your parents. But because you’re 13, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: There is a law that we have to report 13-year-olds who are having sex, but we don’t tell — it has to be reported to CPS, but it’s not like them to call you or anything.

CALLER: Well, could I get in trouble?

CLINIC: No. They don’t call you. It’s like, we just have to report, and we don’t tell them what you’re here for.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We just have to report anybody that’s 13 or younger that is having sex. And then if they get like a list of, you know, calls from different agencies, or whatever, then they might look into it kind of thing. But they want to kind of monitor, you know, cases that may be abuse. So that’s how they kind of — they put it on the computer. They say, okay. They never, in this office, have ever wanted to talk or came to see them or anything like that. But there’s nothing concerning your — like your parents, there’s no minor consent laws in Arizona. So your parents don’t have to know about it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he was going to pay for everything. Would they have to know about him?

CLINIC: Well, how old is he?

CALLER: 22.

CLINIC: They make take his information too because —

CALLER: Well, could he get in trouble?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Could he get in trouble?

CLINIC: I don’t know, sweetie. We have to report certain age differences.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But it’s really a matter — I’m not sure what the laws are as far as what they — you know, try and prosecute or if they try and not prosecute. It’s not like your parents are trying to or you are trying to bring up charges to him. If it was consensual I don’t know where they draw the line and investigate or not.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You know what I mean?

CALLER: Okay. Yeah. Well, it’s just, the thing is I don’t really know if I am pregnant because I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. And I don’t know. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test and see?

CLINIC: Sure, hon. You can go to any Planned Parenthood and walk in it at their walk-in appointments. And they’re $10.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if my boyfriend comes in with me — because like he was going to pay for it — would he get, would we get in trouble for —

CLINIC: Oh, no, not for a pregnancy test at all.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to report it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Not just for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if the pregnancy test came out negative could I get birth control?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. You may want to wait until you’re 14, and then they don’t have to report that.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: You turn 14 in March, right?

CALLER: March 19th.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Just it’s different for abortion services than it is for, you know, general services. But if you’re 14, we wouldn’t have to report the fact that you’re a minor having consent. We would report other — there’s other laws that require us to report certain things; that, you know, if you’re 14 that takes care of that. But for abortion, you want to make sure you get in, you know, before you turn 12 weeks or whatever because your price is going to keep going up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have to think about all this. could I — if I thought of any other questions…

CLINIC: (unclear) your pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: We have to have a positive pregnancy test before we can schedule you anyway.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. Well, could I call you back if I thought of any other questions? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Sure, hon. It’s Alicia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
