CLINIC: Planned Parenthood of Prescott. This is Louise.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t, but I can give you the phone number to call.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s in our Phoenix clinic, and the area code is 602. And the phone number is 277-1168.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like I’m just worried about all this because like — well I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: There is no statute on the books right now where you have to be a certain age.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see if I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: I just am worried because I haven’t had my period since December 26.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can drop in. Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s $10, but if you’re 14 you don’t have to pay.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Well, if he wants to pay $10, he can.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just — we were talking about all this, and we decided we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying?

CLINIC: No, but that’s not the point. Just come in and have your pregnancy test. You don’t have to pay for it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant —

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: — could I get birth control that day?

CLINIC: Yes. I mean, we could set you up with birth control, sure.

CALLER: Well, how long would it take?

CLINIC: An hour.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control would you guys have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried. I just, I don’t want anybody to find out. So.

CLINIC: Let’s do one thing at a time. We’ll first do the pregnancy test, see what happens, and then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, are you guys open tomorrow?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, there’s no practitioner here tomorrow, so we could just do a pregnancy test tomorrow.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what time are you open tomorrow?

CLINIC: At 9:30.

CALLER: 9:30? Well, when do you close?

CLINIC: We’ll be here until 4:30.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so, so if I came tomorrow and I did the pregnancy test would I be able to get birth control if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, or —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We’d just schedule an appointment for you then.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how long would it be before I could get an appointment then?

CLINIC: Probably a week or two.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right. Okay. So if I — well the only thing is like, I can’t drive yet. But would my boyfriend be able to pick up like the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Let’s first take care of the pregnancy test.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Great.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I thought of any questions could I call and ask for you?

CLINIC: No. I suggest you come in tomorrow.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You can ask your questions tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, should I talk to you?

CLINIC: It’s not important that you talk to me. You can talk to anyone who’s here.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Scottsdale. This is Aquilla (sp). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering — well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, at this clinic we don’t. Were you wanting information on abortion?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I just had a lot of questions actually. The thing is — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, how Planned Parenthood works, everything is pretty much confidential.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So depending on if you wanted your parents to know, then you know that’s up to you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Like if you were ever planning on having a termination service done, then you would, we would recommend that — not that you tell your parents but that you bring someone along with you.

CALLER: Oh, well, my boyfriend can come. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. But as far as you, your parents knowing or even finding out, it’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, the main reason why I’m wondering about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You said December 26?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Now are you aware if your periods are normally regular?

CALLER: Well, usually.

CLINIC: Okay. And right now are you on any type of birth control?

CALLER: No. I mean, that’s one thing we were wanting to get. Like if I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. How old were you again?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Okay. We do offer government funding called Title X for Teens 19 and under.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s income-based, so based on your income we’ll determine what range you qualify for or how —

CALLER: Well, I don’t have any income. I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Well, it’s not necessarily if you have a job. It’s an allowance or if your boyfriend gives you money or your parents or things like that, basically when you’re filling out this information you can put anything except zero, so.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would I just give you like my boyfriend’s income then?

CLINIC: No, it would be yours. So like if you — if he gave you $5 yesterday you can put that down. Basically when you’re filling out this information you can’t put zero down is what I’m saying.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I could get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Like I said, it’s confidential. The only way someone can find out about it is if you tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And if you did want to come down for a pregnancy test, we do offer that service on a walk-in basis, so you can just come on down and have that done whenever the time is convenient for you. We do close at — today’s Thursday, right? We do close at 6:00, so anytime before that would be fine if you wanted to come down.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but we were talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. So if he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Unless he was like paying with a credit card or something like that or debit.

CALLER: Well, he said that he would pay with cash, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: SO it would be all right then?

CLINIC: That would be fine.

CALLER: Okay. I need to call him to see when he could take me in there, but if I thought of any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Aquilla.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Or anyone here can help. But if you would prefer to talk to me, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just worried because like — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Do you know for sure you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26.

CLINIC: Well first you should come in and get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Um, whatever you could afford to pay.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $13, and you need to be here by 4:00.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would my parents have to know about that though?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just, the thing is, my boyfriend said he was going to pay for everything, and he was going to bring me and everything, but we were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign any papers?

CLINIC: You?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend.

CLINIC: No. You fill out papers. But it’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in to get birth control too?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: We do a physical, and you get the birth control after the physical and it’s whatever you can afford to pay.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today?

CLINIC: Well, you’d have to have your physical.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how long does it take to get that?

CLINIC: About 45 minutes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And so our next opening is at 1:30.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would have to call him and see, but if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, is it all right if I call my boyfriend to ask him what time he can come in and then call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Belinda (sp).

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Paula.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: The charge for an abortion, depending on your blood type is either $440 or $380.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so do you know — like I’m just worried about this because my friend told me that since like I’m going to be — I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: 14 weeks or 14 years old?

CALLER: 14 years old. She said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: We don’t ask. We don’t need parental consent in the state of Arizona.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have an appointment already?

CALLER: No. I just am worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. So.

CLINIC: Okay. Your period was December 21st you said?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Let’s see. Okay. Did you want to schedule an appointment now or did you want to call back?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Are you wanting to schedule an appointment now?

CALLER: Well, I need to find out if I’m actually pregnant really.

CLINIC: Okay. So just come on in and we’ll take a test, and then if you are we can go ahead and set you up with an appointment. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, what are your hours?

CLINIC: We’re open until 7:00, but we stop doing pregnancy tests at 6:30, and the test is $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but it’s just we were talking about everything, and we decided that we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign any papers if he was paying for everything?

CLINIC: No. He wouldn’t have to sign any papers. We don’t — it doesn’t matter where the money comes from. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So if you want to come in today the test will be $10, however you pay. It doesn’t matter. Just come in and we’ll have you fill out the paperwork.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just — I have to call my boyfriend to see if he can bring me tonight, but it would be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: He doesn’t need to be there with you.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Unless you need him to pay. He doesn’t have to be there. I mean, if you’re — it doesn’t matter how old you are. There is no parental consent needed in the state of Arizona to have anything done family planning-wise. So if you’re wanting birth control, if you’re wanting to get a pregnancy test, that’s not important. But what I would recommend to you, just to make you aware, that if you come in they will ask the age of your partner, and if your partner is four years your senior —

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: — we will have to call CPS.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you are a minor.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: We would just call and report that you were involved with a man who was four years older or greater than you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so it would just be better not to have him there?

CLINIC: Pretty much.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So we will see you then before 6:30?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see if he can take me, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, I could get birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Nope, nope.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. We’ll see you then.

CALLER: And your name was Paula?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay? Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
