Scotland Yard is reporting the death of an almost full term unborn child after attackers stomped on the stomach of the child’s pregnant mother.
Authorities say that 21-year-old Malorie Bantala was on her way home when she was attacked by two men wearing motorcycle helmets near her home in Peckham, in south east London, on Monday night.
Bantala was eight months pregnant when the attack occurred.
Detective Chief Inspector Robert Pack from Scotland Yard told reporters that the men, one of which was her ex-boyfriend, forced the pregnant woman to the floor and then stomped on her stomach.
“It is quite clear she was heavily, heavily pregnant. She was given first aid in the street and taken to hospital.
“That child was totally viable. The law says at 28 weeks the child is viable of independent life,” he said.
She is now in critical condition in a hospital, fighting for her life after suffering internal bleeding.
Her unborn child died as a result of the attack.
According to a report in the UK Mirror, the woman’s ex-boyfriend, Kevin Wilson has been charged with “unlawfully and maliciously” and “intent to destroy the life of a child capable of being born alive, by a wilful act, namely kicking and stamping on the stomach of the 32-week pregnant mother, causing the child to die before it had any existence independent of its mother“.
Pack said that they are investing the crime as Child Destruction, “Certainly we’re treating it akin to murder,” he said.
