CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Jennifer. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: We don’t, but I can give you a phone number of where they do.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: They have — there’s a clinic in Durango, one in Springs, one in Denver and one in Ft. Collins.
CALLER: Okay. What’s the one in Durango?
CLINIC: I don’t know that number. Let me look here. It is, the number is 1-800-472-4884.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, I’m just really worried because like, well, I’m going to be 14 years old in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?
CLINIC: Let me ask. Hold on.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: They won’t notify your parents.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just — the thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about it, and we don’t want my parents to know about all this. So like if he’s paying for it, would they have to — does he have to sign a whole bunch of papers or anything?
CLINIC: I don’t think so. Everything is confidential.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But I would take it as soon as you can since the longer you wait the more expensive it is.
CALLER: Okay. Well, the main reason that I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. Well —
CALLER: Could I come in there for one?
CLINIC: Yeah. If you come tomorrow they’re only $5.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: So if you want to come on in anytime tomorrow we can do a pregnancy test to make sure that you are pregnant or it might be something else.
CALLER: Well, would you have to tell my parents if I was getting a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Would it be all right if he was there with me?
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Our hours, come on in between 9:00 and 3:00.
CALLER: Tomorrow?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about all this again?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Does anybody have to know if I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No. Nobody will know.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like since I’m not old enough drive, would my boyfriend be able to pick up like the birth control pills?
CLINIC: Yeah. If you just write a note saying that he can pick them up for you, then we can give them to him.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Uh-huh, bye.
CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. This is Sherry (sp).
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t, but I can give you the number of Vaughn (sp) Street Clinic in Denver.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s 303-321-2458.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like my friend told me that you guys have to — like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said you guys have to tell my parents.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: But can I — is it all right — you don’t have to tell my parents at all?
CLINIC: No. There’s no parental consent in Colorado. You can call that number, and it’s totally confidential, and they will not tell your parents.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all because like my boyfriend is 22 and they hate him, but — because they just think he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: No. It’s totally confidential.
CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you guys do the pregnancy tests there?
CLINIC: We do.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?
CLINIC: No. Everything that we do is totally confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We don’t tell anybody anything about your health services.
CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me in?
CLINIC: Oh, that’s fine. And you can do that on a walk-in basis.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: They’re $22 normally, and if you come in tomorrow Tuesdays are $10.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And we’re open until 7:00 today and we’re open 9:00 to 7:00 tomorrow.
CALLER: Okay. So like do you guys do birth control too there?
CLINIC: Oh, sure.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?
CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anybody anything. I promise.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s all confidential.
CALLER: Well, if I talked to my boyfriend and he had any other questions could I call and talk to you?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Sherry, but you can talk to anybody here.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. Anybody will be glad to help you.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: No, not yet.
CLINIC: How can I help you?
CALLER: Were you Leah?
CLINIC: No. She’s with a patient right now. Do you want to hold?
CALLER: Oh, well, no. I was just wondering if you were her. What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Dorothy. How can I help you?
CALLER: Oh, yeah. Well, I was just wanting to ask some questions. But like do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, but I’ll give you the number.

CLINIC: No.
CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever that is?
CLINIC: That’s not true. So you could just call the abortion clinic.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You don’t need no parental consent.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test? It’s just, I’m scared. I don’t know.
CLINIC: They’re $22 during the week, and they’re $5 on Friday.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right to come in on Friday?
CLINIC: Yeah. We open at 9:00 and we close at 5:00, and you just walk in.
CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if — like my boyfriend’s going to bring me. Is that okay and everything?
CLINIC: Yeah, if that’s okay with you.
CALLER: Is it all right if he’s in there with me?
CLINIC: Yeah, if that’s okay with you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Dr. Hearn’s (sp) office. How can I help you?
CALLER: Are you there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: How much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: Our fee is dependent on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Do you know?
CALLER: Not really. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.
CLINIC: Did you have one on January 3rd?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: You had a normal period January 3rd?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Was it a full cycle?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. The first day would have been January 3rd?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: It would be a first trimester procedure, and the fee would be $1,200.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It would be a two-day outpatient process.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want to schedule an appointment?
CALLER: Well, the thing is I’m going to be 14 on the 19th of this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Well, are you in school?
CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.
CLINIC: And what are you going to tell your parents what you’re doing those two days?
CALLER: Well, I just go out of town a lot and visit my other friends.
CLINIC: And where do you live?
CALLER: I live in Lafayette.
CLINIC: In Lafayette? Okay. That would be up to Dr. Hearn. I could have him call you. What’s your name?
CALLER: Well, it’s Lisa. But I can’t have him call me. I’m at my friend’s house right now.
CLINIC: So there’s not a number he can reach you?
CALLER: No. Well, boyfriend was going to get a cell phone number, but he just got it, and I don’t know what the number is yet. Can I give you that?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: So I would have to call him to see.
CLINIC: You don’t know what the number is?
CALLER: No, he just got it.
CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold for a second?
CALLER: Sure.
(pause)
CLINIC: Lisa. That’s okay. Let me go ahead and schedule that for you.
CALLER: Well, I’ve got to find out when my boyfriend can bring me.
CLINIC: It would be either tomorrow and Thursday.
CALLER: Okay. What time?
CLINIC: Well, I need to schedule an appointment. It takes about 10 or 15 minutes to schedule the appointment. So whenever you figure out when he can bring you, it would be on a Wednesday and Thursday. You’re going to be here at the office for about four to five hours both days.
CALLER: Okay. So could it be next week?
CLINIC: It could be next week. Next week would be the 13th and 14th on Wednesday and Thursday? So when you find out when he can bring you, call me back and we’ll schedule an appointment for you.
CALLER: Okay. Could I go home in between though?
CLINIC: Pardon me?
CALLER: Could I go home in between the two days?
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. To Lafayette?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Yeah. Lisa, what’s your last name?
CALLER: It’s Carter.
CLINIC: Carter?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay. I will just hear from you when you decide. And just tell your boyfriend that it’s $1,200. We take cash and credit cards, Master Card, Visa, Discover.
CALLER: Yeah, we were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything in cash. But we don’t want anybody to know about us. If he was paying, would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?
CLINIC: No. But if he wants to come in with you, you both have to show a photo i.d., like a drivers license.
CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t drive. I don’t have a drivers license.
CLINIC: Do you have a student i.d.?
CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.
CLINIC: Okay. Somebody is going to have to come in with you who has a photo i.d. who can sign something that says that you are who you are. Can you get a hold of a birth certificate or anything like that?
CALLER: Yeah. But it doesn’t have a picture of me.
CLINIC: Do you have your birth certificate?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: This week you need to take your birth certificate to the place where you get a drivers license and tell them that you want a color auto i.d. And they’ll just give you a photo i.d. Tell your boyfriend that he needs to take you to the Department of Motor Vehicles, and you need to wait in line and get a photo i.d. with your birth certificate, okay?
CALLER: So then he wouldn’t have to sign anything?
CLINIC: Nope. He would not have to come into the building. If he wanted to come in with you, he would have to show his i.d. In other words, he can just give you the cash, and you can pay yourself.
CALLER: Okay. But could he pick me up then?
CLINIC: Absolutely. You can call and say I’m outside. You can come outside now. You can call from a cell phone.
CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I just haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I get one of those before you guys do everything?
CLINIC: Yeah. You can also buy one of those at the grocery store.
CALLER: Oh. Are those usually right though?
CLINIC: Yeah, they’re very accurate.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: What kind should I get?
CLINIC: Any kind of early pregnancy test that you get at the grocery store. And you need to do it first thing in the morning. The first time you go to the bathroom in the morning, that’s when you need to take the test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant by that test, could I come in and get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: No. You need to go to Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control?
CLINIC: They shouldn’t. There’s no law that says that you have to have parental consent for birth control or anything. There’s no law that says that, okay? If somebody tells you you have to tell your parents, then just go someplace else, because you’ll find a place that won’t make you tell your parents. There is no law that says that you have to tell your parents.
CALLER: How will I know if the pregnancy test is right?
CLINIC: Read the instructions. It will give you instructions.
CALLER: And it tells whether it’s —
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: I just have so many questions.
CLINIC: I understand.
CALLER: I’m just really confused.
CLINIC: It’s a really scary time for you.
CALLER: Could I call you if I had any questions. What was your name?
CLINIC: Yeah. My name’s Margie.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay, Lisa?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: So don’t forget, get that birth certificate. And tell your boyfriend to take you down to DMV and get a photo i.d.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: And you sure that nobody has to know about any of this?
CLINIC: Nobody will know. Absolutely. Nobody will know.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: All right. Thank you.
CLINIC: Okay. Take care.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Women’s Health. This is Heidi.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We do. Our clinic is closed right now. This is our administrative line.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: If you needed some information, can you call back tomorrow?
CALLER: Yeah, I guess. What time tomorrow?
CLINIC: Let me see what time they open downstairs. They open at 9. I just don’t have anyone clinical who you can talk to. I can give you some basic information if you have some general questions. I can try to answer what I can for you.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: We do them between 5 and 14 weeks from the first day of your last period.
CALLER: Okay. How do you know how far along you are?
CLINIC: Do you know when you had your last period?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: January 3rd? Okay. Hang on real quick.
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: I just had to check because we have a special little mechanism that will tell us. If that’s when your period started, you should be fine. But we do do an ultra sound to confirm that just in case that was a false period or anything like that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We do them on Fridays.
CALLER: Well, my main question is, I’m going to be 14 on the 19th of this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Now, we’re getting confused. I know if you’re 14 it doesn’t matter.
CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 19th.
CLINIC: On the 19th?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: You’ll turn 14 on the 19th?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: I don’t think we have to tell your parents. See, these are the questions — I apologize. I’m in the finance office up here. So I work in this capacity and I’m familiar with the structure and the organization and what not, but as far as the specifics like that, I don’t know.
Why don’t you give a call like about 9:30 tomorrow morning if you can, and someone will be more than happy to answer your questions.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: They can answer more of the specifics for you.
CALLER: Who should I ask for?
CLINIC: Hang on real quick.
(pause)
CLINIC: Thanks for holding. Why don’t you call tomorrow and ask to talk to Holly. She’s our clinic manager. And she’ll have all the information that you need. I just ran into one of our practitioners who said that she believes we do not need — if you are requesting confidentiality and you don’t want your parents to know, that we could still do it without — I mean, we’re not required to tell your parents or anything.
CALLER: Is she busy right now? Could I talk to her?
CLINIC: We’re closed right now.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So yeah. Give us a call tomorrow morning, because there’s really no one here who can answer the questions for you.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: But yeah, we’ll be happy to talk to you then.
CALLER: Okay. Thanks.
CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.
(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)
CLINIC: Women’s Health. This is Linsey (ph).
CALLER: Hi. Can I talk to Holly, please?
CLINIC: Ma’am, let me see if she’s available. Can I tell her who’s calling?
CALLER: This is Lisa. I was talking to Heidi yesterday, and she told me to talk to Holly.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on a moment.
(pause)
CLINIC: This is Holly.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was talking to Heidi yesterday, and she told me to call you today to ask you a question.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Let me stop you right here because if you tell me anything else, I have to call the police.
CALLER: Why?
CLINIC: Because you’re 13 and your partner’s 22, right?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: That’s against the law. I have to report it by law.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: So I don’t want to know your name or anything about you if you don’t want me calling the police.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So what you need to do is you need to call completely anonymously and talk to someone on our appointment line. And don’t tell us anything about who your partner is. Okay?
CALLER: Well, would you have to tell my parents though, like that I was getting an abortion?
CLINIC: If the police get involved, they’ll know at least that you’re having sex with that person.
CALLER: Well, I mean, without talking about my boyfriend, would my parents have to know that I was getting an abortion?
CLINIC: I don’t know about that. I don’t know if it would come out or not. But it definitely would come out, and there could be charges brought against him.
CALLER: But do my parents have to know that I am getting an abortion?
CLINIC: No. Just in general, if we don’t know anything about your partner?
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: Absolutely not. It’s confidential. There’s no parental consent. Although your age is — let me ask about age. Hang on a second, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. Let me just tell you what we have to report, okay? If someone is under the age of 15 and has sexual contact with someone four years or older. This guy is just a boyfriend to you? He’s not like any kind of person in a position of trust, like a teacher or counselor?
CALLER: Right. He’s just my boyfriend.
CLINIC: I’m just reading this. Sorry.
CALLER: Well, the thing is, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Could I come in there and get that without anybody saying anything?
CLINIC: As long as you don’t tell us — as long as you don’t tell us about it. If we don’t know how old, we’re not going to ask. I would suggest that you come to teen Clinic. They’re used to dealing with teens, and they know all the legalities of it. The next time we have teen clinic is Saturday though? Can you wait that long?
CALLER: I think so. What time on Saturday?
CLINIC: It starts at 1 and goes to about 6:30. And you could come in and get the pregnancy test and then talk about, you know.
CALLER: Well, my last period was January 3rd. Do you think that there would be any way that I wasn’t pregnant?
CLINIC: Well, certainly missing a period is one of the most obvious signs of pregnancy, but there are other reasons for missing a period. But you have been sexually active? Have you used birth control each time?
CALLER: Well, no. We were wanting to get that if we could.
CLINIC: Well, why don’t you at this point come in and do a pregnancy test. If you can wait until Saturday, then you’re going to have people that know more about teen legalities.
CALLER: How much does it cost for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: And it’s also free if you come to the teen clinic.
CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, do they do birth control there too?
CLINIC: Yes, they do. But they may need to make an appointment to give you that. So let’s rule out the pregnancy first.
CALLER: But would anybody have to know about getting birth control?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s just your age I’m worried about. There is an age where you just have to report someone is sexually active at a certain age. And I don’t know whether it’s 12 or 13.
CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s probably a good thing, that you’d be 14. Okay?
CALLER: The thing is my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but he just can’t come with me?
CLINIC: No, he can come with you. He can’t be more than four years older than you on paper.
CALLER: All right. So it would be okay if he was there with me?
CLINIC: It’d be okay. But, again, like if you tell somebody that he’s 22 and you’re 13, that’s something we would have to call the authorities about.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right.
CALLER: So thanks.
CLINIC: And let me give you a different number, okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Because this is our business number, and to make appointments you need to call on a different number. It’s 442-5160.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.
CALLER: Bye.
