CLINIC: (Unclear) Planned Parenthood. This is Julie.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But I can refer you to someplace that does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s down in Denver. That number is 303-321-2458.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: It’s just that I’m scared and I don’t know. I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just do whatever? Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: I don’t believe that you do have to tell them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I would just give the clinic a call and give them the information that you told me, and they can kind of guide you through some stuff.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have a way to get down there?

CALLER: Well, he was going to take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Because there’s not a clinic up around here. That’s probably the closest one that would do that procedure for you.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just that I’m scared because my last period was the second week in December, and I haven’t had one since.

CLINIC: Have you done a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You might want to go ahead and do that.

CALLER: Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: We do that here. You can also buy them at the grocery store. And since it’s been that long — you can do either one, whichever is convenient for you. You can do it here or you can buy one at the grocery store. And they’re pretty accurate, especially as late as you are.

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want to mess it up. I would rather come in there and do it.

CLINIC: Sure, you can do that. You can absolutely do that.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there though?

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: Can my boyfriend bring me?

CLINIC: Yeah. Oh, sure. You bet.

CALLER: Could he be there with me and everything?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. He can come in with you.

CALLER: He’s just worried about having to sign stuff. Would he need to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. No, just you.

CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, except that at that point I’d have to have you talk to a nurse practitioner. And then I’d have to make an appointment for you. To do pregnancy tests you can just walk in and it will take a few minutes, and I can give you the results. But if you want to use birth control, and if you want an appointment for birth control, you’ll have to see our nurse practitioner. And she doesn’t have to do a full exam on you. She just asks you some questions, and take your blood pressure, and make sure she’s giving you the right method that’s right for you. And that can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a half hour.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So if you want, why don’t you just come in, and we can do a test for you. And then we can just take it from there.

CALLER: Well, I have to —

CLINIC: You want to talk to your boyfriend?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So if I was on birth control though, would you guys have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. This is all confidential.

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend — if I was on birth control pills, could he pick them up for me? Because I don’t know how to drive.

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Yeah, he can get them for you. No problem. He’d have to either — well, he doesn’t have to call. It’s always helpful if he calls and says I’m going to come and pick up a couple of whatever. But, yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’re open today until 6:00. But if you’re going to come in, I would suggest coming in — don’t come in five minutes to 6 because it does take a little time. If you could come in around before 5 or 5:30.

CALLER: Well, could I come tomorrow?

CLINIC: We’re open tomorrow from 9 until 3, and you can come in and do that as well.

CALLER: Okay. That would be better.

CLINIC: Okay. And we’re also open Friday 9 to 3, so whichever day works for you. So that’s it. And then after we find out the results, then we can just take it from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You bet. Thanks for calling.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Sherry (sp).

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t. Fort Collins Planned Parenthood does though. Do you want their number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It’s 1-800-360-0665.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Is it all right if I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Absolutely.

CALLER: I’m just worried. I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my parents can’t find out. My boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of everything?

CLINIC: Hold on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you there?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: They should not have to know about that.

CALLER: Not at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they can explain that to you when you give them a call. They’ll be happy to answer those questions, but that should be okay.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Could I come in and take a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: You can. You just unfortunately missed the cut off today. We have donation pregnancy tests from 9 to 4 on Wednesdays. All the other days, they’re $22. So you can definitely come in tomorrow, but it would cost you $22.

CALLER: Well, that’s all right. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Yeah, anytime. That would be fine.

CALLER: It’s just I’m worried because my last period was in December.

CLINIC: So you definitely want to come in and get that test done then. And you can just walk in. We’re open tomorrow from 9 to 7.

CALLER: Okay. My boyfriend wanted me to ask if anybody has to know about this at all.

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: All right. Well, if the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Just so that we don’t have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely. We could either — now, I don’t know if we’re going to be able to do it tomorrow. We usually just schedule an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We can definitely schedule that appointment for you because you most likely wouldn’t have to start them this next Sunday. We wait until your period starts, and then you’ll start your pills on the first Sunday after your period starts.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So we should have a little bit of time.

CALLER: So if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: All right. My boyfriend drives, and I don’t. Is it all right if he picks up the pills?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’d be just fine. Once you come in for your consult, which is a $25 visit, that gives you a prescription that’s good for one year with us, to come by and pick up your pills. Your pills since you’re a student are $14 a month. But yeah, if he wants to come by and pick them up, you would just have to tell us when you come in for your consult so we can put it in the computer that whatever his name is can come by and pick up the pills.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So we might see you tomorrow then.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Lori (sp). How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. The closest clinic is Colorado Springs.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. I sure do. Let’s see. It is 1-800-472-7162.

CALLER: All right. Well, do you know, I’m just worried about all this because like my friend told me — like well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You mean, to just go up and have it done?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: And without your parents knowing about it?

CALLER: Right, yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, you can go up there. You don’t — in the state of Colorado you don’t have to have your parents’ consent to have an abortion no matter what age you are, and they can’t force you to have one either, you know, if people don’t want one. So they don’t have to know, and Planned Parenthood will not tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So your boyfriend can take you up there.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Well, it’s just we were talking about all this, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about us. He said he would pay for everything, but would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: No. He just — the only thing is that, you know, he has to pay it in cash or they’ll take like a money order. They won’t take a personal check or they’ll take a credit card. But they won’t– they’ll just have you, you know, fill out medical paperwork, but they won’t have him sign for anything.

CALLER: Well, how much money do you think we should bring?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy. I mean, it could range anywhere from $300 to $600.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are? Like my last period was like December 26.

CLINIC: December 26? And do you know that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for awhile, and I’m worried.

CLINIC: And you’re probably — and your periods are pretty regular?

CALLER: Most of the time, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on and I’ll go look, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay, your period was December 26 you said?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And you haven’t taken a test yet, right?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay, so what you’ll — before you actually make an appointment for sure with them, you can call and ask them the information about the pricing and stuff, you’ll need to get a test done somewhere.

CALLER: Can I go in there for that?

CLINIC: Are you a patient here?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: You haven’t been here before? If you’re not a patient here, then it’s an automatic $22.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: He’ll pay for it? Yeah. Because you just need some kind of verification, and we give you a copy of it if you are. That way you can take that with you up there stating that, you know, you already had one done here.

CALLER: Okay. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. You sure can.

CALLER: Well, could I get it right away?

CLINIC: Um-hum. If you want pills, we can give them to you the day you come in, but if you want anything else besides that then you have to wait for your period to start for the shots. But for pills, we can give them to you right away.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And nobody can know, so that way people aren’t allowed to call, and we can’t give information out.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: For the visit it’s $20 for a one-time visit charge, and then after that for your pills they’ll be $10 for one pack, so you’d get one pack for each month, so they’re $10 apiece.

CALLER: Okay. Well the thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up like the pills?

CLINIC: Can he bring you in for you to fill out the paperwork for the first time?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And then after that all you have to do is we’ll just have you write on a piece of paper saying that it’s okay for him to pick up pills for you, and then we just stick in your chart, and he can come in whenever you need him to to pick up pills.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m looking to see if you are pregnant I’m trying to see how far along you are, because I know through Planned Parenthood they only do it up until you’re 16 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And this is February 28. So if you are pregnant, then it would put you at 9 weeks, so you still would have a few weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So then if you’re not then we can get you on the pills.

CALLER: Okay. So I should call that number that you gave me and ask them?

CLINIC: You can call them, you know, and ask them about pricing and stuff like that. Tell them that, you know, that you’re about you think about 9 weeks and that you’re just wanting to know some information. And then you can come in and we can do a test to see if you are or if you’re not.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But my boyfriend and I could come in and see about a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And we’re here until 4:00.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Katie. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t. I can give you a phone number to the Planned Parenthood Services Corporation that does.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 303-321-2458.

CALLER: Where are they at?

CLINIC: They’re in downtown Denver.

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a real quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: My friend said that you guys have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion, but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just say it’s all right?

CLINIC: You don’t need parent approval. You don’t need parental consent for that.

CALLER: I’ll be 14, and that’s all right?

CLINIC: I don’t believe that there’s an age. Just a moment, please.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. That’s correct. You wouldn’t need parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m worried. I’m worried that I’m pregnant because my last period was December 14th, so I just don’t know.

CLINIC: Let me just put you on hold. I’ll be right back with you.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. What I would suggest is if you could, come in tomorrow and get a pregnancy test here with us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That way you’ll be able to confirm if you’re pregnant or not, as well as we can give you referrals. We can go over more about the procedure and that kind of thing for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So on Thursdays from 11 to 6, the pregnancy tests are $5. Every other day they’re 22. So if you can come in tomorrow you only have to pay $5, and we can go over everything with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: My boyfriend can bring me. What time did you say that I could come?

CLINIC: Some time between 11 to 6 tomorrow.

CALLER: My friend just actually told me that you guys have to know about my boyfriend too. Is that true? Does he have to fill out any forms or paperwork or anything?

CLINIC: We need to know about him as far as what?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: She just said that you guys have to know about him and stuff.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me see just a minute.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. If you boyfriend were to bring you in, we would just say — by law we would probably have to turn you in.

CALLER: Turn me in to who? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, to Social Services. We’d have to call them. Because of the age differences, it can be classified as statutory rape.

CALLER: What is that? What do you mean? He’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, unfortunately it’s just the law. So what I’m saying is we’re not going to ask if you don’t tell us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So he can definitely bring you in, and there’s no problem with that at all. Just probably I’d have to just suggest that you don’t bring up the age thing to us.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Does that make sense?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And that’s probably what I would suggest. But you guys can definitely come in. We’ll give you information. That’s not a problem.

CALLER: I don’t want to go through this again. Do you guys have birth control or anything there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. But depending on what your pregnancy test says we would be able to either get you on birth control — if you’re not pregnant, we could get you on birth control. If you are pregnant, you’d have to have an abortion or do whatever you decide, and then we could get you on birth control that way too, after your procedure.

CALLER: Do you think it’s possible that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: You know, there are definitely reasons that you could have missed your period. I couldn’t say one way or the other. If you haven’t had a period since December, skipping a period is basically the first symptom of pregnancy. Have you been having any nausea, any sore, swollen breasts, anything like that?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What I’d suggest is that you’d come and get the pregnancy test, we’ll give you the referrals, we’ll go over everything about birth control, and we’ll send you out of here with a lot of information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can go ahead and bring your boyfriend in. That wouldn’t be a problem.

CALLER: Okay. What’s your name again?

CLINIC: My name is Katie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I’ll be here tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Kayleen.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: If you could just hold on one minute, please?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hi, thanks for holding. You had some questions about abortion?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, the clinic that you’re calling here we don’t do any abortions here. I can give you some numbers for some other Planned Parenthoods, like one in Denver and one in Ft. Collins that does abortions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want those numbers?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. The one in Denver is 303-321-2458. And there’s a Planned Parenthood in Ft. Collins. Their number is 970-493-0281.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And if you want I can also give you numbers for two different clinics in Boulder that aren’t Planned Parenthoods. They’re different clinics that do abortions. Would you want them?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, there’s a Boulder abortion clinic that’s 303-447-1361. And then the Boulder Valley, and that number is 303-442-5160.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Okay, you can go ahead. I might not be the best person to answer, but go ahead.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever and they wouldn’t —

CLINIC: What it is right now in Colorado there is no parental notification laws, so anyone in Colorado can get an abortion without telling their parents right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There’s some stuff going on in the courts where that may change, but right now you’re able to get an abortion without your parents needing to know.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yep. You can do a pregnancy test here. It would be $5.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would want my boyfriend to be there with me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yes, that’s perfectly fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we were talking about it, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys be asking a lot of questions?

CLINIC: No. We would just have you fill out a little form with some questions on it like about when your last period was and what you would do if you were pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Uh-huh, and then everything we do here is confidential between us and you, so we wouldn’t be able to talk to anyone else about anything that you and I would talk about.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope. The same thing. We have a really strong confidentiality thing with just us and you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Christine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we’re open until 5:00 today.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you know where we are?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend knows.
