CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Service Incorporation. This is Wendy.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, it depends on how pregnant you are. Up until the 11th week of pregnancy it’s $410. And then it goes up from there.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how pregnant you are?

CLINIC: First thing we do when you would come in would be an ultrasound, okay? I can give you an estimate based on your dates of your last period.

CALLER: Oh. Well, it was like December 21st.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me check for you here. 12/21. Hang on just a minute. 12/21. So it looks like right now somewhere between 9 and 10 weeks from your last period. Again, up until 11 weeks it’s $410. We take cash, credit cards and money orders. We don’t take personal checks.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And our clinics, we do them one day a week. Next week’s is on Wednesday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just, the thing is, I’m really worried because like, well my friend said that since like I’m going to be — well I’ll be 14 in March, she said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: Oh, no. No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you’re old enough. You’re old enough to take care of it. We don’t have to tell anybody.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: It’s up to you. You know? I mean, that’s your business who you want to tell.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for anything, and we just — we were talking about all this, and we don’t want my parents to find out. Would he have to sign any papers or anything?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. No. It’s your decision. Okay? He doesn’t have to sign for you. There’s nothing — you know, it’s — you could come by yourself and it would be fine.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he would be the only way I could get there. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yes. That’s fine. Sure. So what you would need to do is just make an appointment, okay? And we can do that now or you can call me back when you’ve talked with him, or whatever you want to do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there and get a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or you can buy one at the store. If you come in here, they’re $22. If you get one at the store they’re going to be less.

CALLER: Are they usually right though?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, we just don’t want anybody to know about all this. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I came in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: It’s just, we don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: So — but if I was on birth control would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope. No. It’s all your decision. It’s your choice. You’re old enough to have sex, you’re old enough to make those choices for yourself.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, so do I need to make an appointment to come in for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. You can come in any time for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay, and then just go from there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Absolutely. My name’s Wendy.

CALLER: You’re Wendy? All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Sarah. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, do you know how much that cost?

CLINIC: Between 5 and 11 weeks since your last normal period it’s $410.

CALLER: Well, my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s been about 10 weeks since your last period. And I’ll just give you the price bracket up from that. Between 12 and 13 weeks it’s $500. And if you’d like IV sedation during the abortion, that’s an additional 50. Okay?

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just say whatever needs to — could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: There’s no parental consent in this state or parental notification, so you don’t have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: I have to call my boyfriend to see. But is it all right if he brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. Yeah. If you like the IV sedation, you need to have somebody drive you. And you probably have to have somebody drive you period.

CALLER: Well, how do I know if I’m pregnant or not?

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You could do a home test if you want to. Are you in town?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You are? Or you can come in here. It’s up to you.

CALLER: I’d rather come in there just to make sure I was getting it right.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you come in before 5 today?

CALLER: Well, not today.

CLINIC: Not today? Okay. Well, the reason I ask is because on Wednesdays we offer them for $5, and they’re 22 every other day. So they would be cheaper for you in the store. And they’re pretty accurate. You can just do one. If it comes out positive, that’s all the confirmation that you need.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s up to you. I mean, if you want to come in here, that’s fine. But you’ll be paying a little bit more.

CALLER: What do I do after it’s positive?

CLINIC: And if you decide that you want to have an abortion, then you can give us a call. And we’ll just give you some information, get some information from you, and make an appointment for you. And we provide abortions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it wasn’t positive, do you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: It’s just I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah, I don’t blame you.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: My boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: Right. Okay. Yeah, that’s between you and your physician. It would be against the law for us to reveal that to anybody.

CALLER: Would it be all right if he picked it up? Because I don’t have any way to drive. I mean, I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Picking up monthly? Sure. You can leave us a note in your chart, and then he can do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back then?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name again?

CLINIC: My name is Sarah.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Teresa. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We could refer you to a clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you hold on just a minute?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh, actually the number is 945-8503. Name is Barb. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well do you know — like I’m just wondering like, well the thing is I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not sure about that. Would you like me to ask real quick?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: No, they don’t. Your parents won’t know.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though? It’s just I’m scared because I haven’t’ had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: December 21st? Okay. You could come in. The charge for a pregnancy test is $22.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you have to pay that before you get your pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s — is he going to come in with you?

CALLER: Is that all right?

CLINIC: No, that’s fine. That’s fine. It doesn’t matter.

CALLER: Okay. I mean, he’d be the only way I could get here too. So.

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: He would be the only way I could get here too, so.

CLINIC: Okay. No, that’s fine. You could come in at whatever time. You don’t need an appointment to get a pregnancy test. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just if he was there paying for everything would he have to sign a bunch of papers?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Oh, okay. He’s just worried that my parents would have to find out about all this.

CLINIC: No. Nobody will find out. This is all confidential. Your parents won’t find out. We won’t call your parents, nothing.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You would have to make another appointment for that, but yes you could.

CALLER: I could?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. No. All of it’s confidential. All our services are confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t tell anybody about me and my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What was your name again?

CLINIC: Teresa.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So just come in like today whenever or —

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What time today? What time are you —

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. Our hours are from — today is Wednesday. From 9:00 to 5:00 today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Medical (?). How may I direct your call?

CALLER: I was trying to talk to Barb.

CLINIC: One moment.

(phone ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. This is Barbara. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was talking to Theresa (sp) at the Planned Parenthood, and I was wanting to get an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: She said to talk to you.

CLINIC: Right. Can you tell me when the first day of your last normal period was?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: We can do a two-day surgical procedure.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: The first day the doctor goes over your health history with you, he does a brief physical exam, and then we insert in a little stick of seaweed that’s called a laminaria (sp). We put that into your cervix. We leave that in overnight and then dilate your cervix by absorbing moisture. And then we have you come back the next morning, and we do a suction procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The cost is $375. And we do expect that to be paid in a cash payment on the first appointment day.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything in cash. It’s just – the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents….

CLINIC: No we don’t.

CALLER: …But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it then?

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents even if he doesn’t come in.

CALLER: Okay. So he’s old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: It’s just we talked about it, and he we don’t want to want anyone to know about us. So would he have to sign any forms if he’s paying?

CLINIC: Well, there is a consent form that you would have to sign, and we would probably have him sign as a witness. But all of our records are confidential.

CALLER: Well, could somebody else be the witness then?

CLINIC: Certainly.

CALLER: Would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand? Because I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: You haven’t done one?

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period for a while, and we’re just really scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, the first thing I would do is buy a home pregnancy test.

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: They’re very accurate.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come to you guys and get some birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about this?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, a new patient visit, I’m not exactly sure. It would depend on lab work and stuff if you decided to do any of that. And you probably should need a pap smear. But I don’t deal with any of the financial stuff, so I can’t tell you exactly how much that is. I certainly can transfer you to the cashier, and she can give you an idea of what the cost would be.

CALLER: Well, once I get birth control — I can’t drive — would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: Probably.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control right?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So you’re sure nobody would have to tell my parents about anybody?

CLINIC: Not as far as I know.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: All of our records are confidential. Without your consent, we can’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: All right. Okay. That’s just my main concern.

CLINIC: Now it might be less expensive for you to go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And their records are also confidential.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I call you back to set up the appointment?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I need to call my boyfriend to see when he can — what days are you guys open?

CLINIC: Well, right now the first appointment that I have available would be Tuesday and Wednesday, the 19th and 20th.

CALLER: Okay. Would that be enough time?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, let me call my boyfriend and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.

CLINIC: (Unclear) Women’s Clinic. This is Robin. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay, well how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are. From 6 to 12 weeks if $450.

CALLER: How do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last menstrual period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You’re about nine weeks.

CALLER: Okay. So I’m in that first group then?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. And much did you say that was?

CLINIC: Four hundred and fifty dollars.

CALLER: The thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we won’t have to — no, we won’t tell your parents. Everything’s confidential here, unless it’s an emergency. Then we would have to notify your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay. We were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anybody to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Probably just the receipt.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s about it. Everything is strictly confidential. In the state of Colorado we do not have to notify the parents unless it’s a medical emergency, if something were to happen and you had to go to the emergency room.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just that we don’t want anybody to know at all.

CLINIC: Yeah. Do you want to go ahead and make an appointment or do you want to go ahead and talk about it some more with your boyfriend?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. I just haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Do you guys do those there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It’s free.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Have you had a pap smear yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You would have to just get a pap smear for $30, and then we can give you birth control.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential here.

CALLER: So nobody has to know about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: No, nobody has to know, only the staff here.

CALLER: Okay. All right. And your name was Robin?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: When do you normally do the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday.

CALLER: What time?

CLINIC: 9 to 5.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m sorry, 9 to 4.

CALLER: When do you normally do the abortions?

CLINIC: Thursday through Saturday.

CALLER: So it would be best to come in on Thursday?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do them on Thursday?

CLINIC: We would have to schedule an appointment. And our next availability is not until I believe the 15th of March.

CALLER: Would that be too late?

CLINIC: I’m sorry. When was your first day of your last menstrual period again?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: No, you’ll be about 10 weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So let me tell my boyfriend and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
