CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: There’s a place in Madison. There’s a place in Rockford. Neither one are Planned Parenthood. Did you want phone numbers?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Which one do you want, Madison or Rockford?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure which one. But do you know — Like I’m just worried, because like my friend told me that since like, well, I’ll be 14 next month —

CLINIC: Oh.

CALLER: — and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he hold enough to take care of it and —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You want to go to Rockford then. Don’t go to Madison.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because in Wisconsin we’ve got parental consent where you’d have to tell your parents, but Rockford doesn’t.

CALLER: Well, what’s the number for Rockford then?

CLINIC: Yeah. Let me find it here for you. Here we go. 815-963-4101.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know if I could come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: You’re better to go —

CALLER: It’s just, I haven’t had my period yet since like December 21st, and that’s why I’m really worried.

CLINIC: Have you done a home test?

CALLER: No. I didn’t know that those were right.

CLINIC: Sure. The same thing we use.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I would just rather come in there to have you guys do it. But would that be all right?

CLINIC: You can. There’s a cost for it though.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us.

CLINIC: That’s fine. Yeah.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: If he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No. You can just come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Don’t come any later than 5:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: It’s just — okay. We just don’t want to have to worry about all this again. So.

CLINIC: Right. Right. As long as he’s paying for it, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, I just have a lot of questions. I don’t know if —

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: But if I think of something else, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Joleen.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yep. You can call and talk to me any time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Yep. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Hello, Planned Parenthood. This is Jamie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But I can give you a number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. That would be 920-731-9534.

CALLER: Okay. Where is that?

CLINIC: That is Appleton North.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. So if you call them, they will help you. All right?

CALLER: Well, could I ask a quick question? I’m just really scared because like my friend told me like — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and then you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We are suppose to have confidentiality. And I’m not sure on the age limit on that. But if you call the girls up there in Appleton, and they know everything about that. Okay? So they can help you with that. I don’t want to give you any false information. But that’s what they do up there. They handle it. They know everything about it, and they can answer all your questions.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You could do that, yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s kind of expensive. Have you tried an at-home?

CALLER: No. I just didn’t know if they were right. I would really rather to come in there where you guys are at and know for sure.

CLINIC: Okay. The store-bought ones are very effective. I just want you to know that because the prices are fairly expensive.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: It’s probably like $30 for a pregnancy test, just so you know. But if you really want to do that, you can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would really like my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: For your pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s just a urine test. And they usually don’t have them go in the room or anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But is it okay if he’s like out in the waiting room with me?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. I don’t think so. Just hold on a second.

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: This is what I think you should try, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I think you should try a test from the store.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right? And if that’s not good, you come in here — How long has it been?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like December 14th.

CLINIC: I’ll tell you what. Call the Appleton Clinic, talk to one of them, and they’ll tell you what to do. If you need to come in here today, we really need you to get in here by noon, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. So you talk to them first and see what they say. Okay? And then —

CALLER: But would it be all right if my boyfriend came with me today? Because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there. I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Right. Right. Yeah. No, that’s not a problem. They just don’t let them in the exam rooms, that’s all.

CALLER: Okay. But no one would say anything about him?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because we just talked about it, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about anything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So you sure you wouldn’t tell anybody that —

CLINIC: No, no. We can’t. But you need to call the Appleton Clinic first, okay? Because you have time issues and you have other things going on there. So you call them first, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’ll talk to you later.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Donna. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Just a moment. I have to find pamphlet for — okay. The closest one to us would be the one in Madison, and there’s an 800 number. 800-322-2039. And you can call them. There’s also Milwaukee and Appleton if either of those work better for you.

CALLER: Well, let me try that first one in Madison. But do you know — I’m just really worried because like, well I’m going to be 14 years old in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: I know that there’s a law that you have to, they have to contact your parents. Let me just ask someone. Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: I don’t think that they would do that. I think you’d have to contact the public defender and get yourself or have a judge declare you competent to make that decision, and he would give you permission.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Your best bet is to go to your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them at all. I mean —

CLINIC: You what?

CALLER: I can’t tell them at all. I mean, if they found out that me and my boyfriend were having sex, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: You know? I know. I know that’s how you feel. But you know what? They love you more than they love anyone else in the whole world. They’ll yell. But they’ll be there for ya.

CALLER: Well, do you know if the judge ever says no or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’d have to really actually talk to someone in —

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Where do you get ahold of a public defender, Jim?

CLINIC: Okay. Call the clerk of courts and ask them who the public defenders are, and they can help you. They’d be able to answer those questions better than I.

CALLER: Well, does that cost any money?

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Public defenders don’t cost any money, do they?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see if I am?

CLINIC: Yes. You bet you can. You can come in today. Just walk in.

CALLER: It’s just, the thing is, my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Would it be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: I guess.

CALLER: Yeah? It’s just, we were talking about all this, and we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: No. This is confidential here. I don’t know because there’s a legal issue there.

CALLER: What kind? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Hold on. I have to ask my manager some questions. Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: The legal issue is your boyfriend is 21.

CALLER: Well, he’s 22.

CLINIC: 22. And you’re 13.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s a legal issue, and no matter where you go they need to report it.

CALLER: To who? What could happen? What —

CLINIC: There’s a thing called statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married, and he’s going to take care of me.

CLINIC: You’re 13 years old.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: In the law’s eyes, you’re not of an age where you can be consensual.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail. That’s what can happen.

CALLER: Well, he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only one that’s there for me.

CLINIC: You know, you can tell me that. But I didn’t make the law. What, you need to discuss it with him. And you need —

CALLER: Well, if I come for a pregnancy test would he have to go to jail? I mean, how could I come in if he’s not there?

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me ask.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: You can come in and have the pregnancy test done. He can drop you off here, and you don’t have to name him.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But it’s still going to need to be reported, because at your age you’re not old enough to consent to have sex.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: That’s the law. Any place you go, you’re between a rock and a hard spot now. You cannot name him. Beyond that, I don’t know. You know? And if you’re not pregnant, we don’t have to report it.

CALLER: Oh. So if I was pregnant and you reported it, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): I imagine that they would have to tell their parents, wouldn’t they? If we reported it?

CLINIC: It goes to Social Services. Yeah. We don’t know where it goes from beyond there.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So, but if I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control there and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You can still get birth control at age 13. Yes, without having to be reported to anyone.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So is it possible that I wasn’t pregnant then?

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: Is it possible that I’m not pregnant? It’s just —

CLINIC: Only you can tell me that. (laughs) I mean —

CALLER: Well, my last period was like December 21st. That’s why I’m scared about all this.

CLINIC: Yeah, at 13 it’s not unusual to have that, you know, stopping and starting kind of thing going on. But you know what you could do, is you can go and get one of those pregnancy tests over the counter and try that.

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: If you do them right they usually are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you do one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You could do that for starters.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if it’s negative get in here and we’ll do a pills in advance or something on you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Call us back —

CALLER: You guys wouldn’t tell on my boyfriend or anything though?

CLINIC: You don’t tell us who he is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Thanks.

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: You would want to come in and talk to someone about that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I —

CLINIC: Yeah. And then they can give you a list of places also.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come and get like a pregnancy test? I’m just really worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 14th, and I don’t know what to do. I’m just scared.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Since like I don’t drive or anything, is it all right if my boyfriend comes to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: You would have to sign a consent here with you. But you need to find out if you’re pregnant or not first.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? We’ve got to take it one step at a time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you need to come in and get that all checked out, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: But do you guys have to tell my parents about anything at all?

CLINIC: Okay. Listen, we’re not going to tell anybody anything. It’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Don’t be worried. It’s all confidential, okay?

CALLER: Okay.
