CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Mitchell Street. Can I help you?
CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t, but I can give you a number to call.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: It’s our Jackson Street Planned Parenthood. They do abortions.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: The phone number is 276-8777.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do like the pregnancy test there?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Oh, no. You don’t have to be a specific time for that.
CALLER: Okay. And you guys don’t have to tell my parents or anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. Well, like it’s just my parents can’t find out at all. Because like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. No. We don’t tell your parents.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: You can pay a pregnancy test. You can come in on a walk-in which is Monday through Friday from 10 to 4 are pregnancy tests, and Saturdays they’re from 9 to 12. You don’t have to make an appointment for a pregnancy test. So you basically come in, ask us for a pregnancy test, and we give you the slot and you see what times we have available.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if I have to tell my parents to get an abortion?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So like if like I took the pregnancy test and it was negative, do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about the birth control either?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if my boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
CALLER: That’s the only way I could get there.
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: In order for you to start birth control you have to be on your period though. So if you wanted a pregnancy test, for a pregnancy test you can just come in.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? And you can talk to the nurse and you go from there.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I talk to my boyfriend and ask if he has any other questions and call you back?
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. What was your name?
CLINIC: Judy.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Wisconsin Ave. This is Rebecca.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we do not.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?
CLINIC: You’d have to call the clinic on Jackson Street. And I can give you the number there.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: It’s 276-8777.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — My friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: You’d have to ask them over there. They handle everything related to abortions. I couldn’t really give you accurate information.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: If you’d have the abortion done, they’d have to give you a pregnancy test there anyway. So you might as well just go there.
CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to go to you guys because it was better to go there.
CLINIC: Well, this is a Planned Parenthood also. But this is the only Planned Parenthood that deals with abortions, the number that I just gave you. We don’t do anything abortion-related here. So you’d have to call that number and have everything — I mean, you could come here and get a pregnancy test, but they do one again when you got there anyway. So you’d be getting double services.
CALLER: Well, I just don’t know. I haven’t had one yet, and I’m scared because like my last period was December 14th, and I’m just worried. I would just rather go in there real quick and see.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, we’re open for pregnancy testing until noon today.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right like if my boyfriend’s there with me though?
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: Because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there.
CLINIC: That’s fine. But we stop doing them at noon.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, would anybody have to know about us or ask any questions or anything?
CLINIC: No, everything here is confidential.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, but we couldn’t give you any today because there’s no nurse practitioner on staff.
CALLER: Well, how soon would I be able to get —
CLINIC: You’d have to come back in. Our walk-ins are Monday. She won’t be here until after 12, so we’ll be seeing a couple patients between 12 and 2. And then our next walk-in day is Wednesday.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody about it?
CLINIC: No, everything is confidential here.
CALLER: Okay. Okay. Well, would it be all right like since — It’s just the problem is, I’m not old enough to drive. Could my boyfriend pick up the birth control pills or whatever?
CLINIC: You would have to be here in order to receive the pills yourself. We can’t dispense any kind of medication to anybody but the patients.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So if you want to get birth control pills, I’d probably come down on Wednesday. You could come in on a walk-in. You might end up waiting a while. But you could be seen by the nurse practitioner. We could do the pregnancy test. And then if you’re negative, we can start you on birth control right away.
CALLER: Okay. What was the number for the clinic again?
CLINIC: The Jackson Street clinic?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: It’s 276-8777. But you’d have to be pregnant in order to go there. They don’t do any other services there. It’s just an abortion clinic.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So I wouldn’t be able to get birth control there?
CLINIC: No. You’d have to come and get an exam for that. And our next walk-in day is Wednesday.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Lincoln Plaza. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Our clinic does not. It’s the Jackson Street location. Do you want that phone number, ma’am?
CALLER: Yes, please.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one moment. I’ve got to get my little cheat-sheet of phone numbers. Okay. Their phone number is 276-8777.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That’s a 414.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, can I ask you a quick question?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: I’m just really worried because like my — like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Okay. Now are you 18?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: If you are under the age of 18, to get an AB you need to have someone that’s 25 or older. Like do you have a sibling at all that’s 25 or older?
CALLER: No. I’m the oldest.
CLINIC: Do you have an aunt that you can talk to?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. You’ll have to do something. You might be able to get like a court bypass. Can you hold on one moment? I’ll get you some information.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay, hold on.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay, ma’am?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay. Okay, what you need, what you’re probably going to want to do is something called — You have no other family members that you can confide in with this?
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: Okay. You’re going to want to do what’s known as a court bypass, okay?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: And basically, you file a petition to wave consent. And then basically, at the public defender’s office at no charge, they will act as your advocate and will accompany you to see a judge in a confidential meeting. The judge must determine that you are like mature and well-informed about the decision and that the abortion is in your best interest.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What you may want to do is when you call them and ask them about this stuff — Otherwise, what you can do is — Do you live near here? Could you maybe walk? Could your boyfriend drive you here? Because we could give you like this little packet. We could just give you a packet. Oh, wait. Here. I have a phone number for the public defender’s office. Okay?
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay. I’ll give you first the public defender’s office. And their phone number is 266-1210. And then for like other info, you’ll probably have to call the Children’s Court Center. This will be the second number that you’ll probably have to call. 257-7736.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Now if you want, we do have a little bit of a packet, if you want to stop in and get that. Otherwise, if you call those phone numbers they’ll probably be able to really help you out about what you need to do.
CALLER: Do you know if the judge ever says no?
CLINIC: Most of the time the judge does not say no. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a time where a judge says no.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: Come here for a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Yeah. I’m just really scared because like my period — I haven’t had my period since like December 14.
CLINIC: Are you — Okay. Have you already taken a home pregnancy test?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. You have not taken — Okay.
CALLER: I didn’t know if those are right.
CLINIC: Those are actually fairly accurate. You could probably go to Walgreen’s and get one for like $15. You’re more than welcome to come here, although there is a charge —
CALLER: I would rather do that.
CLINIC: You can. Okay. There is a charge for a pregnancy.
CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.
CLINIC: He said he would pay. Okay, because the pregnancy tests here — It’s right around $35, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right. So do you want to make an appointment then?
CALLER: Well, I guess.
CLINIC: Okay, hold on.
CALLER: I don’t know. But my boyfriend and I talked about it, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to say anything?
CLINIC: Everything here is confidential.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out like that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, you can get birth control here. There’s also a cost to get annual exam and to get on the pill, but did you say — Would your boyfriend be willing to pay for that too?
CALLER: Yeah. Yeah. We just don’t want to go through all this again.
CLINIC: Okay. The charge for the exam, because you’re under 18 there is a discount, it’s going to be around $75 or so. Pills for you are $12.25 a month.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No. Again, everything here is confidential. Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, he actually has a job. Would it cost any more then if he was paying for it?
CLINIC: Oh, no, no. Because you’re under 18. It’s just a certain charge because when you’re under 18 there’s a discount.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to make an appointment first for a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, hold on one moment.
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Can you come in at 12:15?
CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend, but I think he could take me at his lunch break then. So.
CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t — All right. Do you want to give me — How about if I just get your first and last name?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: And you’re sure — Like my boyfriend and I don’t want anyone to know about us. And you’re sure that you guys wouldn’t say anything?
CLINIC: Everything here is confidential, ma’am.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t I get your first and last name, and then if he can’t give us a call back, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And we can set up an appointment for you on Monday.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay, so what’s your first name?
CALLER: Christine.
CLINIC: Christine?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay, and your last name?
CALLER: Smith.
CLINIC: Smith. And date of birth?
CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.
CLINIC: 3/19/88. Okay. Well, why don’t you give him a call and see if he can give you a ride. And if he can’t, just give us a call back and we’ll set up an appointment for you on Monday. Okay?
CALLER: All right. So what time do I need to be there, like 12:15?
CLINIC: 12:15.
CALLER: All right. Well, so should I call you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Amber.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Okay.
CALLER: Okay. Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Northwest.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Oh, I can give you that number to our abortion clinic.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: 276-8777.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just scared because like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that since I’ll be like in 14 in March, that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he — Is he old enough to take care of all that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: I’m not sure. He might be. I’m not sure. Hold on a second.
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay, he wouldn’t be able to take care of that or sign for you because he’s not a legal parent, guardian or relative. So what’s going to have to happen is, only thing you can do is go through a judicial bypass —
CALLER: What is that?
CLINIC: You will have to come in, take a pregnancy test. After we run the test and see it’s positive we’ll have a list of questions that we have to ask you, and we have to go over your options. Three options — which is, you know, we have to let you know you do have the choice to keep it if you would like. There is also abortion. There is the option of, you know, having the baby and putting it up for adoption. But you will have to go through — we will have to give you the counseling. It’s basically counseling, give you your three options, and then go over some questions with you. You would, after that you would have to go see a public defender or a lawyer for the state.
CALLER: How much does that cost?
CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): (unclear) Do they charge for public defenders? For judicial bypasses?
CLINIC: Oh. We’re not really sure. They probably don’t, but we’re not sure about that.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You will go through a judicial bypass. You will speak to a public defender or a lawyer for the state, and he will go before a judge with you and let you know, let the judge know that you want to go for an abortion without your parents’ consent. You have to go through a couple of things before you can have that done.
CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say no?
CLINIC: Well, it all depends. Sometimes the judge will say no if he doesn’t think that, you know, doesn’t think there’s a big threat that your parents knowing will cause a problem. If it’s really going to be a problem that your parents know that you want to have this done and that you are pregnant, then he’ll okay it. And the judge will sign the papers and you can go to the abortion clinic and get it done, because the judge signed and said it’s okay for you to get it done.
CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge have to tell anybody about it?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Everything stays confidential.
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: Would you be able to come in on Monday?
CALLER: I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but — because he’d be the only way I could get there. Would that be all right if he’s there with me?
CLINIC: Yes, that’s fine. That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. So I could come in for a pregnancy test and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was there?
CLINIC: No, ma’am.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and him talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know about us. So.
CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, if the — like is it possible that the pregnancy test could be that I wasn’t pregnant?
CLINIC: Did you take a home pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. It’s a possibility that you can be.
CALLER: Oh. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant could I be on birth control then?
CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.
CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.
CLINIC: I understand. So if your test comes back negative, we can always put you on birth control.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No, ma’am. Everything is confidential. We don’t tell anyone. It’s on you if you want to tell somebody. But Planned Parenthood, everything is confidential with Planned Parenthood. We don’t release any information to anyone. We won’t even be able to release information to your boyfriend if he asked.
CALLER: Okay. Well, the problem is, well, could he come and pick them up? Because I’m not old enough to drive. He’d be the only one that could get them.
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. He can always come pick them up. All you have to do is write a note. We can put the note in your chart.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared and I don’t know. But would it be all right if I called and talked to you if I thought of anything else? What was your name?
CLINIC: Uh-huh. My name is Latoya.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Val Phillips Clinic. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t do them here, but we do them in our other clinic.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you have the number for that?
CLINIC: Huh?
CALLER: Do you have the number for that?
CLINIC: Yeah. Just hang on. I was just going to grab it. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay. There’s two in Milwaukee. There’s Affiliated on Farwall (sp) and then we have one on Jackson, okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: And the Jackson Street one is 276-8777. And they’re open today 8:00 to 4:00.
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you real quick, like I’m just worried about all this because like, well, I’m going to be 14 next month.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But —
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?
CLINIC: Are you 13?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Well, that could be a liability problem.
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: Just hang on. I’m going to get a little information. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay, thanks for holding.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: The thing is, you have to consider that because you are 13 and your boyfriend is 22, that is statutory rape.
CALLER: What? But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he was going to take care of me for the rest of my life.
CLINIC: Well, but, I mean, but that’s not how our laws work. Okay?
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: I understand that, but if you do try and get him involved, we are liable and we need to report it.
CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do.
CLINIC: I would not — Just so you know that. Your other route is — Do you have a family member that is 25 years or older who would vouch for you? Or to get a clergy-member or to get the courts to listen, which they do that all the time. You go and see the DA and then you present your case of why you do not want to have that child. And then they’ll just ask you questions and then they’ll vouch for you.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do they usually say yes?
CLINIC: A lot of the times that I’ve experienced, yes. Definitely if you — because it is your choice. So they just have to make sure that you’re sound mind and everything like that, so it’s just kind of a technicality really.
CALLER: Well, would they do anything? Would they ask about my boyfriend or anything?
CLINIC: Well, that’s what — If you mention it, yeah. The law requires them that they report it. So that’s up to you what you’re going to tell them. If they ask you questions, know that if you do tell them that age and everything or if he’s with you or anything, they will take matters in their own hands.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: The abortion?
CALLER: The judicial thing.
CLINIC: No, that’s part of a service.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
(clinic worker talks to someone else in the room)
CALLER: Would they have to tell my mom and dad or anybody that I was there for that?
CLINIC: No. No, they don’t. They do not need to. That is something that you do on your own. Like that’s why you’re going to them.
CALLER: Okay. So if my boyfriend didn’t come in, I could get a pregnancy test there?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: Okay. Well if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?
CLINIC: Right, absolutely you can get birth control.
CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody about that though?
CLINIC: No, don’t need to tell anybody about that. We are confidential about what we talk about to the point and what services we do give you. We don’t need permission for anybody to give you birth control or to do testing. Only your own permission.
CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend then?
CLINIC: Well, just hang on. I want to ask my (unclear) one question about that.
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Do you know what I want to do is take your name and phone number, okay? Can I do that? And call you back? I just want to clarify stuff for you, make sure.
CALLER: Okay. Well, can I call you back real quick? I just have to get my boyfriend’s cell phone number because that’s the one that he wanted to use, but I can’t — I don’t remember what it is right now.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. You can call me back. I’m just going to verify some things before I tell you because I don’t want to tell you anything that I’m not sure of. So why don’t you give me a call back in about 10 minutes, okay?
CALLER: All right. So what was your name so I can call you back?
CLINIC: My name is Carrie, C-A-R-R-I-E.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

TAPE – 538 Pt 2: The Call Back
(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)
CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Val Phillips Center. This is Deb.
CALLER: Hi. Is Carrie there?
CLINIC: She is. Can I tell her who’s calling?
CALLER: It’s Christine.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, Christine.
CLINIC: Hello, this is Carrie. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was talking to you earlier about —
CLINIC: Right. I know. I left a message with my administration, and I’m just waiting to hear back from them for the current, you know, like updated things about what the issues are and everything. So I tried, I called a couple people but they were gone at lunch. But they’re going to get back to me.
CALLER: Okay. When would be —
CLINIC: They should be back to me shortly. If they don’t call me by 1:30. I’m going to call them again. And then, if you want to, you can either call me back at 2:00 or I can call you back.
CALLER: Well, I should probably call you ’cause —
CLINIC: You want to call me?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: At 2:00?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Because we’re open until 6:00 if you’d want to come in and get some testing and stuff.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want my boyfriend to get in trouble if I came in, so.
CLINIC: Right. Neither do I.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: I mean, I want what you want to a point, but I also want what’s healthy, okay? And I want to do what’s right. So that’s why I want to let you know the facts, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay, and what is your name, Christi?
CALLER: Christine.
CLINIC: Right. Okay. Then just give me a call back and ask for Carrie. Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Thanks.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye Bye.
(phone clicks)
TAPE – 538 Pt 3: The Call Back
(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)
CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Val Phillips. This is Deb.
CALLER: Hi. Is Carrie there?
CLINIC: She is. Can I tell her who’s calling?
CALLER: It’s Christine.
CLINIC: Sure. Hold Christine.
CLINIC: Hi there. This is Carrie.
CALLER: Hi.
CLINIC: Hi. Yeah, I talked to the administration. Basically you know, I just can give general information with the phones. Like I said was, if any client comes in to any of our Planned Parenthoods, abortion clinics or whatever, and somebody tells us they’re 13 and their partner is — the person says they’re one age and then a partner of a different age, depending on the law or what age you are, we have to. We are liable as healthcare providers to report to a specific agency. So that’s anywhere you go. But that’s all the general information —
CALLER: Well, what does all that mean?
CLINIC: What?
CALLER: What does all that mean?
CLINIC: It just means that if you go in to any other Planned Parenthood or any health place, especially the state-funded and everything, any place – even private healthcare provider – has to by law report if there is a minor with somebody that is not a minor. So if you tell, or of if any client mentions this, that person would have to under law contact authorities.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: If that is not known, then that’s not known.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: That’s what matters, you know? So that’s basically — and that’s the only general information —
CALLER: So if I don’t say anything about it it will be all right?
CLINIC: Well, you know, I can’t say that either. Like I’m not supposed to say anything about that. But I think you got the picture.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Well, if I come in for a pregnancy test and it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Of course you could. Definitely. So I would call a place that doesn’t know your first name or name.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You know where you’re close to? I can refer you to one?
CALLER: Well, I’m just in Milwaukee here, so.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you know where all the clinics are?
CALLER: Yeah. I got, my boyfriend gave me a list of them to call, so.
CLINIC: Okay. Just because of our discussion I would be — you know. You can call —
CALLER: So I should go someplace else then?
CLINIC: I’m not trying to say that, but (laughs). I’m not denying. But you know, since I know what I know, I’m just telling you what I generally would have to do.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Does that make sense?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: But I definitely want you to get service, okay?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: But there’s a good 10 other clinics too.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: I hope I helped. Do you have any other questions?
CALLER: Well, no. I don’t think so.
CLINIC: Okay. Okay. You take care, and good luck to you, and yeah. I hope everything goes okay. Okay?
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Affiliated Medical.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?
CLINIC: It depends. Is this for you?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. It depends on how far along you are.
CALLER: How do you know how far along you are?
CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: That was the first day of the last normal one?
CALLER: Yes.
CLINIC: Okay. You’re about eight-and-a-half weeks right now. And for the surgical procedure, it’s $100, for the state-mandated counseling. Beyond that, it’s $240 for the local procedure; 315 if you have the twilight sedation with that. And then do you have a Forward card at all?
CALLER: A what?
CLINIC: A Forward card, medical assistance?
CALLER: No. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything. I mean, it’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You would need to have an adult relative with you —
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: — at the age of 25.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Or your parents, or you can do the — you can go to court and have a bypass.
CALLER: Well, how much does it cost to go to court?
CLINIC: It doesn’t cost anything.
CALLER: Oh. Do I need a lawyer?
CLINIC: No. I am not actually too familiar with that. You would probably — I would recommend calling tomorrow morning, because I’m not too familiar with that whole thing in the state of Wisconsin.
CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge usually say it’s okay?
CLINIC: As I said before, I’m not too familiar. I assume that most of the time. I doubt that there’s any time that a judge doesn’t. I mean, it all depends on if the judge feels that you are adult enough to make the decision.
CALLER: Oh, all right. It’s just I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Do you guys do that there?
CLINIC: We do, but that’s probably something you would want to do. Our tests are just as accurate as the ones that you get at like Target and Walgreens.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Okay. I just didn’t know that those were right.
CLINIC: Oh, they are. Yeah.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control? It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.
CLINIC: Right. The thing is that we’re a private clinic, so it does cost a little bit more for like a pap smear and everything. If that’s what you’re going to be looking at, I would go to like a Planned Parenthood because they have lower costs for that and stuff.
CALLER: Are they as good?
CLINIC: Oh, definitely. Yeah.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I was there for all that?
CLINIC: For like birth control?
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, how much does it cost — Well, do you not know how much it cost at the Planned Parenthood for birth control?
CLINIC: Oh, for birth control? No, I don’t know.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: I don’t know. But —
CALLER: How much does it cost from you guys?
CLINIC: I believe it’s over 100. I mean, that’s for like the pap smear.
CALLER: Well, it’s just the thing is, my boyfriend gave me the number to call you guys, and he really wanted to go to you. But he wasn’t really worried about —
CLINIC: Cost.
CALLER: It’s just we were talking about all this, and he said he was going to pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. So if he came in there, would he have to fill out any forms or anything?
CLINIC: You mean for you to get a pap smear?
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: No. I mean, it would be all you.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Wait. Hold on one second, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Yeah —
CALLER: Hello?
CLINIC: Yeah?
CALLER: Are you there?
CLINIC: Yeah. I think it’s about $100.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But if I were you I would first take the pregnancy test first, and then go from there. I believe that our prices are pretty close for abortions as Planned Parenthood. I think we may be a little bit more. I don’t really know actually. I haven’t called over there. But don’t worry about being under the age of 18 until you know what’s going on.
CALLER: Okay. So after the pregnancy test, I could call you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Melissa.
CALLER: Okay. And just take the test and then call you?
CLINIC: You can speak to anyone who answers the phone.
CALLER: Oh, all right.
CLINIC: Because I don’t work here full time, and I probably won’t be here. Just explain your situation. And plus, whoever answers probably will know more about the bypass, for going in front of the judge and stuff.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: Oh, you’re welcome.
CALLER: Okay. Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood. This is Linda.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It’s a total of $385.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just kind of worried ’cause like, well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Okay. Because you just told me that, if you were — (laughs) You didn’t tell me your name. But if you’re 14 and your boyfriend is 22, he could be arrested for sexual assault.
CALLER: Why? I mean, he’s not assaulting me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going —
CLINIC: Listen. Just a wait a minute. Wait a minute. It’s not my law. It’s a state law because the state believes that you’re under the age of making a decision to have sexual intercourse. It’s a state law. So here are your options. You can have an abortion. If you can’t have your parents sign for you for a consent, what you can do is call the public defender’s office and you can get what’s called a court bypass. And then they can walk you through. And you talk to the judge. You tell the judge why you want to have an abortion. And the judge will either grant it or not grant it.
CALLER: Well, does he usually —
CLINIC: Yes, they usually grant it. But I have to tell you that if you come here and give us your name and tell us that your boyfriend is 22 years old, we would have to report that to Social Services. Because you are not old enough to be making that decision.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I don’t say then, it would be better?
CLINIC: Well, if you don’t say it, we don’t have to report it. If you say it, we have to report it. Because you are 14 and he is way an adult.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to get that there?
CLINIC: Just go to Walgreens or Shopco (ph) and get a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Well, are those usually right though?
CLINIC: Yep. Those are real good. Get a pregnancy test. And I think you need to talk — Do you go to school?
CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.
CLINIC: Okay. You’re home-schooled?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. I think you need to talk to somebody. You go to a Planned Parenthood maybe and talk about if you really want to be sexually active. Because there’s a lot of risk when you’re having sex when you’re that young.
CALLER: Yeah. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: Yes, you can. Yes, you can.
CALLER: But would anybody have to know if was on birth control?
CLINIC: No. Nobody knows if you get birth control. But do not have sex with him unless he uses condoms. You are too young to be making the decision to have sex when you’re 14.
CALLER: All right. Well, I don’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the birth control?
CLINIC: Well, you’d have to go to the clinic to get the birth control. So first of all, you start with a pregnancy test. And then you pick up the phone and you call a Planned Parenthood. If you not pregnant, you call Planned Parenthood and set up an appointment. Tell them you need birth control.
CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Nobody’s going to tell if you take birth control. If you’re going to have sex, we’re going to help you protect yourself from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? That’s your decision. But we want you to think about whether or not you really want to have sex.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Do you know why you’re having sex?
CALLER: Well, me and boyfriend are in love.
CLINIC: Okay. If you’re in love, you need to think about if this is what you want to do right now. You know?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Because it’s against the law for him to have sex with you. Does your mom or dad know that you’re seeing a 22-year-old?
CALLER: Yeah. I mean, they just don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, he works with my dad. They know him, and they know we’re going out.
CLINIC: Okay. All right. Well, they might feel different if they know you’re having sex with him.
CALLER: Right, yeah. And they can’t find out about that at all.
CLINIC: Right. Okay. So you have the pregnancy test taken. And if you’re not pregnant, do not have sex with him until you get to Planned Parenthood and get on some birth control.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Because not only could you be getting an unwanted pregnancy, but you could get a disease. And the problem with that is, if you have a disease and it’s not taken care of with any medicine, when you want to have babies in the future, you might not be able to.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But as long as I’m not pregnant, no one has to know anything?
CLINIC: Nobody has to know if you’re not pregnant. And if you are pregnant and you want an abortion, you call the public defender’s office.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? But please think about what I said. But if you’re going to have sex, we want you to be protected.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Any other questions?
CALLER: Well, I don’t know. But if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?
CLINIC: You bet. You call. I’m Linda.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right.
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye.
CALLER: Bye.
