CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood, Appleton. Could you hold please?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this clinic, no. I can give you the number for the Appleton clinic that does.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 731-9534.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — My friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We have to have a legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell them? Cause, I don’t know — If they found out, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you talk with the abortion clinic to see what you can do, okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test though? I’m just really scared because like my last period was like December 14th, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you a student?

CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: Okay. Because the pregnancy test is going to be $30.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you can come in and have a pregnancy test. Just make sure that you do not go to the bathroom for three hours before you come in. And you don’t need an appointment or anything; it’s a walk-in service. On the day that you come in, you have to come in at least an hour before closing time though.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what time do you guys close?

CLINIC: Today at 1:00. So you’d have to get here by noon.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I would really feel better if my boyfriend was there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. And you’ll have to pay about $30 today.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, he just doesn’t want anybody to know about us, so would you guys be asking questions or anything?

CLINIC: We’ll have you fill out some paperwork. Yeah.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Nope. It doesn’t really have anything to do with him.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you would have to come in for an exam and a pap smear before we could start you on birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: That can cost up to like $100.

CALLER: Well, could I get on birth control like right away?

CLINIC: You’d have to make an appointment to come back.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you came in for a pregnancy test, you’d have to schedule an appointment for a different time to come in and get birth control.

CALLER: Okay. The problem is, I can’t drive because I’m not old enough. But can my boyfriend pick up the birth control after the exam or whatever?

CLINIC: Sure. He would just have to bring in — We give like — Every patient that gets birth control here, we give them an identification card. And he would just have to bring that in for you, and he’d be able to pick up your pills or your birth control or whatever.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does he have to sign anything or anything for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Nope. He won’t be a part of anything that you do here. It’s all having to do with you.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, thanks. You’re just so nice. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Sarah (sp).

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: If you’re 12 weeks pregnant or under, there will be a total cost of $455.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: Well, we go by the first day of your last normal period.

CALLER: Oh. Well, that was January 15th.

CLINIC: There will be two separate appointments. The doctor will do a ultra sound on your first appointment, and that will be the final factor in deciding how far along you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You said January 15th?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re about eight weeks, roughly.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just kind of worried. My boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything. I’m just scared cause, well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he was going to take care of everything. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, there is a parental consent law in the state of Wisconsin.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: But there’s a way around it too. Do you have a brother or sister over the age of 25?

CALLER: No. I’m the oldest.

CLINIC: Let’s see. Have you had any previous pregnancies?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Then your final thing would be to call your public defender in your county. And what you want is a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: That means you’re going to sign for yourself, and that you do not need your parents to be with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: Yep. That’s what the public defender is. It’s free. You go in as Jane Doe. And what county do you live in? Maybe I can give you their phone number.

CALLER: I live in Appleton.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me grab it. Can you hold for a second?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Is that something you think you’d want to do? And what you do on that, is you contact the public defender, and you tell them you want a judicial bypass. And you set up a meeting with him or her, and then they discuss why you can’t go to your parents, do you know your three options, and those are parenting, adoption or an abortion. You discuss that with your public defender. And he may have you do a little research. He may even have you come here to get some information like after school or whatever. We can set something up where you come in and learn about what goes on during an abortion, what are the risks, things like that.

CALLER: Well, does a judge usually say it’s okay?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nine times out of ten, they’re pretty good. Let me grab that number. Can you hold for a moment?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: (unclear) a pen?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. He’s a really nice guy. And his number is 832-2886.

CALLER: Okay. And what was his name?

CLINIC: His name is Eugene Bartman. Mr. Bartman. And you just ask to talk to a public defender, and that will probably be him.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come there to get a pregnancy test just to make sure, because I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Why don’t you go to the store? They’re a lot cheaper that way.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: But are they as right as the ones that you have?

CLINIC: They’re just as good. We almost use the same one that — like EPT. Fact Plus is one that we usually use that’s pretty similar. And do it with your first morning urine. When you get up tomorrow morning, do the pregnancy test then.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there for birth control?

CLINIC: Actually, it would be our other clinic on Wisconsin Avenue. They could help you out with the birth control.

CALLER: Okay. So after I do the whole judicial thing, and I come in there — me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to —

CLINIC: Nobody will know.

CALLER: Would he have to fill out any forms or sign any papers?

CLINIC: No. Well you would, not him.

CALLER: Okay. So his name wouldn’t be on anything?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: But first what I would do is do that pregnancy test first, to make sure that you are pregnant or not. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But go like to Wal-Mart, or whatever is by you, and go get one and do it tomorrow morning. Then if you are indeed pregnant, then call the public defender, and tell him you need a judicial bypass to have an abortion.

CALLER: Okay. So if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Valerie. Or anybody here who picks up the phone will be able to help you out.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. There’s no place in the Eau Claire area that does abortions.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know of anyplace that might though?

CLINIC: The Twin Cities is the closest.

CALLER: Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: There’s a few places there.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you want the ones that just have 800 numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: There is Meadowbrook Women’s Clinic, 1-800-721-7708.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — I’m just really scared ’cause like my friend — Like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents about it. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You have a couple of different options. If you have a brother or a sister that’s over the age of 25, or a grandparent, or I believe an aunt or uncle can give consent.

CALLER: I don’t have anybody.

CLINIC: Or you can get what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: They can help you out with that when you call the clinic.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you know how much that cost or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think that cost anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It’s just you meet with a judge, and he says it’s okay for you to get an abortion without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, does he ever say no?

CLINIC: As far as I know it’s usually pretty easy to get.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: And they can help you out with all that when you call the clinic. You can ask them about judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. ‘Cause, well, I’m just really worried. I don’t know what to do because like my last period was like December 14th, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you done a pregnancy test though?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We have a full schedule today, but we’re not busy now if you wanted to come in now.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see if he could bring me.

CLINIC: Or you can just get a test over the counter. And —

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: They’re just exactly the ones we do.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So you can just get a test and run it, and you’re going to get an accurate result as long as you follow the directions.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend and I talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know about this. Like would you guys have to say anything?

CLINIC: No. No. It’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: You sure could.

CALLER: Because I just don’t want to have to worry about this again.

CLINIC: Yep, you sure could.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody I was getting birth control though?

CLINIC: No. It’s completely confidential. We’re actually more confidential than the regular doctor’s office. Because your mom can call the doctor and ask him questions; they can’t call here and ask questions.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I won’t tell anything about your care here unless I have your written consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell about my boyfriend either?

CLINIC: (No response)

CALLER: Well, he just doesn’t want anyone to be asking questions, and we don’t want anybody to know at all.

(pause)

CLINIC: As long as we’re doing your care, your care is confidential.

CALLER: All right. So if —

CLINIC: Could you hold on for just a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

(call disconnected)

TAPE – 396 Pt 2: The Call Back

(Dialing, phone did not ring)

RECORDING: You have reached the Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin Auclair (ph) Clinic’s voicemail system. We are either closed or on another line at this time. Our address is 1231 Monaminy (ph) Street. Our phone number is 715-833-2279. Our clinic hours are Monday, 12 to 7; Wednesday —

(call disconnected)

(Dialing, phone ringing 3X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was on hold, and it got disconnected. I don’t know who I was talking to.

CLINIC: Okay. I just need you to hold on for another second.

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. So you said your boyfriend is 22.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And you are?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. So you know that this is illegal?

CALLER: What’s illegal? What do you mean?

CLINIC: For him to be having sex with you at 13.

CALLER: But why? I don’t understand. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: This is illegal, and it’s reportable to the police.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: And because you’re under 18, we would have to report it to the police if you came here.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: This is not a good relationship for you to be in. If he is 22 and you’re only 13, do you realize he’s an adult and you are still an adolescent?

CALLER: But he’s a great guy. He said he was going to take care of me until we’re old and gray.

CLINIC: A guy told me the same thing 10 years ago, and I haven’t seen him, and I have a nine-year-old daughter.

CALLER: Yeah, but he’s a sweetheart. He wouldn’t do that.

CLINIC: Guys will do that. Men will do anything and say anything to have sex with you. They will.

CALLER: But he loves me.

CLINIC: And they will say that too.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: You can still come here, but we do have to report it.

CALLER: Well, then I can’t come there. I mean, I don’t want him to get in trouble and go to jail.

CLINIC: But if he is 22 having sex with a 13-year-old — If you had a 13-year-old daughter, what would you say if she came to you and said I’m having sex with a 22-year-old man?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: You would freak out.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I mean, if they were in love and happy.

CLINIC: You know in 10 years when you’re 23, you could be in love and happy. But you know, your body is still changing so much that —

CALLER: Well, what should I do then? What can I do?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t tell you what to do. But this is not a relationship that you should be in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that is exactly why he doesn’t want you to tell anybody, because he knows that it’s wrong, and he knows that he will go to jail.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s why you’re not suppose to tell anybody.

CALLER: Well, he said he just didn’t want me to get in trouble because —

CLINIC: No. He doesn’t want himself to get in trouble. You won’t get in trouble.

CALLER: I won’t? Well, if my parents found out, I’d get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Well, but he doesn’t want to get in trouble, and he doesn’t want to go to jail. That’s why he told you not to tell anybody? He knows that it’s wrong, and he knows that this is something he shouldn’t be doing.

CALLER: Well, I can’t — I don’t know who to talk to. I mean, I don’t know what to do then. I mean, if he wasn’t there for me, I don’t — there’s nobody.

CLINIC: You know, at 13 it’s so easy to think that. And I remember thinking exactly the same thing. It doesn’t seem like it, but you do have people that are there for you.

CALLER: Well, what can I do about all of this? I mean, what can I do? I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Well, you know, first of all, we need to make sure that you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: But if I come in there, you have to send my boyfriend to jail?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: So where can I go then? Is there anyplace that I can go?

CLINIC: You can buy an over-the-counter test if you don’t want to come in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you really should come in here and get on protection, and probably get some tests done to make sure that he hasn’t given you any diseases.

CALLER: Well, would you tell?

CLINIC: Yes, we would report that he was having sex with you. Under law we have to because you’re under 18.

CALLER: Okay. So you just want me to come in there and have my boyfriend go to jail, and I’ll never see him ever again. I mean, I don’t want to come in if my boyfriend’s going to be sent to jail.

CLINIC: Well, this behavior he is having is wrong. This is a relationship that should not happen.

CALLER: But we’re in love.

CLINIC: You know, it might sound like it’s coming from an old adult that doesn’t know anything, but you don’t know what love is yet. It might feel like it. And I know at 13 you think everything is wonderful and you’re going to live happily ever after — at 18 I still thought that. You know? And he told me he was going to take care of me forever, and we were going to live happily ever after. Got me in bed, left and never came back.

CALLER: But he wouldn’t do that.

CLINIC: You don’t know that.

CALLER: Yeah, I do. I mean, well — what can I do? I don’t know what to do. Is there anything I can do?

CLINIC: Well, what I think you should do and what you think you should do are two different things.

CALLER: What do you think I should do?

CLINIC: I think you should get a pregnancy test and make sure you’re not pregnant. And you need to end the relationship. Even if you don’t come in here and we don’t report it, you still need to end the relationship. Because this is wrong for him to be doing this. There’s got to be something wrong in his mind for him —

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in and get birth control so that I wouldn’t have to worry about this anymore?

CLINIC: You could. But if you tell us about him, he still has to be reported for having sex with somebody under 16.

CALLER: But if I don’t tell you, it will be okay?

CLINIC: Well, you need to be open and honest with your caregivers. You need to tell them everything, you know, so that they know the best way to help you.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, I don’t know what to do now. But could I call and ask you if I had any other questions?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Nickie (sp).

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And you can call me anytime I’m here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: When are you normally there?

CLINIC: Whenever the clinic’s open I’m here. So Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: You bet. Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood of Fond Du Lac.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not here, not at this facility. Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I’m not sure. I just am real scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 14th. So I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Have you taken a home test?

CALLER: No. Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. I would recommend you take a home test. Either that or come in here, we can test you. And then I can, you know, give you your options.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There is a charge though, and that’s why I recommended the home test first. Because our pregnancy test and counseling is going to run around $45.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything and take care of it.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But it’s just the problem is like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell on my boyfriend because like he’s 22.

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. You’re 13 now?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Holy cow. Ummmm. Yeah, that’s reportable.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: I don’t know. He could be in a lot of trouble.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want him to get in trouble. What can I do?

CLINIC: I know. Oh boy. (Sighing) Oh geez. First of all, you better do a home test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Boy. This is a tough one. Because if you want to terminate the pregnancy, if you are pregnant — where they do it is in Appleton, Planned Parenthood there. And I’ll tell you that so that at least you know where to call.

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents that I was getting an abortion though?

CLINIC: No. No. We can’t tell your parents. But the problem is —

CALLER: Yeah?

(pause)

(clinic speaking to someone else)

CLINIC: Hold on a minute, hon, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hon?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re 13? You think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I’m going to tell you this up front, the minimum you’re going to pay for an abortion is $455.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you’re under 18. If you don’t want your parents to know, you’re going to have to get a judicial bypass, which means you’re going to have to make an appointment with the DA. Go to court.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know. What I can do is I can give you the number to the abortion clinic up in Appleton, and they are wonderful ladies. They will tell you everything you need to know. Because it sounds like you’re pretty far along, so you’re looking at a pretty expensive procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what’s the number for them?

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. It’s 1-888-844-5771.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they’re nice. But you need to find out that you’re pregnant first. You haven’t taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No. I just didn’t know that they were right or not.

CLINIC: Well, what we do here, or what you do in the store, they’re just simple urine tests. And the ones in the store they are pretty accurate. What they’re doing is detecting that HCG hormone. And that’s the hormone that lets us know you’re pregnant. It won’t come up positive if you don’t have that in there. So they’re pretty reliable. If they tell you you’re pregnant, you’re pregnant, hon.

CALLER: Well, would I be able to come in like with my boyfriend and get like a pregnancy test there though?

CLINIC: You could. You could.

CALLER: But would you have to say anything about him?

CLINIC: See, I don’t know because you are so young and he is old. He could get in trouble for that (chuckle).

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I took a home pregnancy test, like if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control? Because I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah. If you’re negative, by all means come on in and get birth control pills.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. We’re not allowed to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: That I’m not quite sure of. That I’m not quite sure of. I’m not sure.

CALLER: Okay. So would it just be better not to say anything about my boyfriend to you guys?

CLINIC: Well, we know now (laughing).

CALLER: Oh. Yeah.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me go back and ask a nurse real quick. Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. Okay, you’re kind of in a sticky situation because you’re 13 and you’re sleeping with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: Yeah. But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. And we’re not here to judge. But legally they would have to report that because it is technically statutory rape. Your pregnancy would be —

CALLER: I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. Right. Right. But by the law, if anyone found out that you were — even if you were in love to the umpteenth degree, if the wrong person found out, I mean it could be trouble. It could be trouble. Now, the pregnancy —

CALLER: But you’re not going to tell anybody now, are you?

CLINIC: Well, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But if you came in we would have to. But now that leaves you in a bind. Because if you’re pregnant and you go up to the AB clinic, then they’re going to know, you know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I mean, it’s great that you guys are in love, but technically because you are so young and he’s over 18 —

CALLER: Well, do you know if there’s any other place I could go?

CLINIC: Why don’t you take your home test first?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Take your home test first before you get yourself really worried. You know, take your home test first. My suggestion would be if you’re negative, please get on the pill. Protect yourself.

CALLER: Oh. But where could I go for that?

CLINIC: My suggestion would be — you could go anywhere if you just kind of keep your mouth shut.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah. I’m just so scared. I don’t know.

CLINIC: I know. And it is scary. And if you were like 16 and he was 22, it would be a different story, but you’re 13.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And like I said, we’re not here to judge you, and we will not. But technically that’s the law, and the nurses here do have to abide by that. So if you came in and they knew that you were sleeping with a 22-year-old man, they would have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But that’s any place. That’s not just us, hon; that’s any place.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you’re so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I talk to you. She just doesn’t ever listen to me.

CLINIC: Right. And you know, a lot of moms they see it differently. But we understand. We’ve been there ourselves and we see it everyday, so we understand.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know, my suggestion would be, if you find out you’re pregnant just take care of it how you have to take care of it. You’ve got the number to the AB clinic. Call the ladies. They’ll tell you about funding or what not and cost and all that good stuff. But I really wouldn’t advertise that you’re dating a 22-year-old.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, if I thought of any more other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yes, you can. My name is Sarah (sp).

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye now.

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood of Green Bay. This is Carina. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: In Green Bay? Or do you want a Planned Parenthood? There’s one in Appleton, Planned Parenthood. Otherwise, there’s OB-GYN Associates in Green Bay.

CALLER: Probably the one in Appleton.

CLINIC: It’s 888-844-5771.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — it’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re going to either have to — And I don’t know the rules and you’ll have to ask them, but you’re going to have to either have an aunt or priest or a sister, somebody over the age of 18 sign for you.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: I don’t think he counts. It’s got to be a family member.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: If none of them can do it, you can go to a priest and have them do it or a pastor, whatever. Or you can get a court bypass.

CALLER: What’s a court bypass?

CLINIC: That they’ll have to explain to you because I don’t know. But just call and ask them.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though just to make sure? It’s just I haven’t had my period since January 3 and we’re just really scared.

CLINIC: Have you taken one at home?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in here for one. They are $43.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You need to pay that at time of service.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just, when we were talking about all this, we didn’t want a whole bunch — we decided we didn’t want anybody to know about us. So if he was paying for it, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. But I could come in for a pregnancy test and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Get here before 3:30 today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today too?

CLINIC: That you have to get an appointment for. They have to do like an exam and stuff before you go on.

CALLER: Okay. But does anyone have to know if I’m on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: So thank you.

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD
202 VILLAGE WALK LANE # C
JOHNSON CREEK, WI 53038-9540

TAPE – 547

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Johnson Creek.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Can you hold for a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wanting to — My boyfriend gave me some numbers to call about getting an abortion. I was wondering if you guys did that.

CLINIC: Yeah. Planned Parenthood does do abortions, but only the clinic — There’s Planned Parenthood has two clinics that do abortion. One is in Appleton and the other one is in Milwaukee.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you have the number for the one in Milwaukee?

CLINIC: Yeah. The one in Milwaukee if you call area code 414-271-8047, then you’ll get an answering machine saying Planned Parenthood, and then you just have to listen for the options. And if they say, do you want to make an abortion appointment press such and such a number.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’m just really worried because — like, well, I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope. There is a parental consent law right now. There is a parental consent law that goes in — that is in effect. And in order for you at age 14 to be able to have an abortion, you do have to have parental consent. Now parental consent can mean either your parents or it can mean anyone — an aunt, an uncle, a brother, a sister, a grandparent, anyone 25 years of age or over. But it cannot be your boyfriend.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have anybody here but my parents, and if they found out I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Okay. Then your other option would be to come to a Planned Parenthood and get something called — You can go and talk to the public defender. If you go to, you know, to the courts, though the court system, a public defender can find you eligible to get an abortion without parental consent. But you do have to go through talking to a district attorney in your county.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It doesn’t cost anything. It’s free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so if I go to them I would be able to —

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Marytown (sp).

CLINIC: You live in where?

CALLER: Marytown.

CLINIC: And where is that? Is that close to, what, Madison or close to Milwaukee?

CALLER: I think it’s closer to Appleton I think.

CLINIC: It’s closer to Appleton? Okay. So why don’t I give you the number to the abortion clinic in Appleton and they’ll be able to help you out with who you call for a judicial bypass. That’s what you ask them for. It’s called a judicial bypass where you’re a minor who’s looking to get an abortion and you don’t have any — you know, any family members that qualify to give you consent. So you want the courts to be able to help you. But, so call Planned Parenthood in Appleton and they’ll be able to help you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And the Planned Parenthood is located at Appleton North. It’s at 3800 North Gillette (sp) Street. And their number is area code 920-731-9534.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just really worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: So you don’t even know if you’re pregnant yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can come in here however. I mean, we do the same pregnancy test as they would like with the home pregnancy test. So have you done even like a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No. I just thought that I would rather come in there and have one of — someone else do it so that I knew it was right.

CLINIC: Sure. You could come in here. We could do it.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my friend just lives there in Johnson Creek, so that’s why I was wanting to go to where you’re at. So.

CLINIC: That’s fine. We can do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. But my boyfriend said that he was going to pay for everything. So would he have to — we just don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No one would have to know. Can you hold on?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. No. He doesn’t have to sign anything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: I mean, we just don’t want to have to worry about this anymore.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I could think of any other questions could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Maria.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
