CLINIC: A Woman’s Choice Clinic. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: Do you know how far along you are?
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Do you know the first day of your last period?
CALLER: It was January 3rd.
CLINIC: 3rd? As long as you are under 12 weeks, you make less than $30,000 and you’re by yourself —
CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job.
CLINIC: Okay. It will be $450 on our sliding fee scale. The normal price is $1,275.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just the thing is, the main reason why I’m worried is because like I’m going to be 14 on the 20th, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: You’re saying you’re 14 years old?
CALLER: Yeah. Well, I’ll be 14 on the 20th.
CLINIC: On the 20th?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. We don’t have to tell your parents because you live in Washington State.
CALLER: Okay. So I don’t have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You live in Washington?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Yeah. There’s no informed consent that you need in the state of Washington.
CALLER: Oh. Well, my friend said you guys would have to know that my boyfriend is 22 as well. Does that make any difference?
CLINIC: We write it down in your chart, yeah. Was the sex consensual?
CALLER: Yeah. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married, and he’s going to take care of me forever. It’s just we’re not married yet, so we don’t want to have a baby right now.
CLINIC: Right. They would just write it in your chart, hon, because you know, you have to write down all that stuff.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Would you guys do a pregnancy test first to make sure?
CLINIC: We do an ultra sound.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: If you make an appointment for an abortion procedure, we do an ultra sound first. Then you have some lab work, and then you have a counseling session before the actual procedure.
CALLER: Oh. Well, if it ended up — Do you think it’s possible that I’m not pregnant?
CLINIC: It’s entirely possible.
CALLER: Oh, okay. I just — Well, the main reason why I’m worried is because I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I don’t know. I haven’t done a pregnancy test yet or anything.
CLINIC: Yeah. If you want, you can either go get a home pregnancy, or you could come into one of the clinics, or even Planned Parenthood or someplace and take a pregnancy test, because you want to find out for sure.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there then?
CLINIC: Sure. What city do you live in?
CALLER: I live in Parkland.
CLINIC: Where’s that at?
CALLER: It’s south of where you’re at.
CLINIC: Okay. All three of the clinics are tied together. And so, actually you’re talking to somebody in Yakima right now. And so we’re over the mountain.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So you’re probably not 20 minutes from me. And so I need to know which of the two other clinics that you were —
CALLER: Well, I was actually wanting to go to where you’re at so that like people I know don’t see me.
CLINIC: You want to come to Yakima?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Oh, okay.
CALLER: And my boyfriend gave me this number, so. It’s just we were talking about all this and he said he would pay for everything. We just don’t want a whole bunch of people to — Like we don’t want anyone to know about us, so we wanted to go there.
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody about us?
CLINIC: We would have to write it in your chart.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So do your parents know that you date him?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And he’s that old and stuff?
CALLER: Yeah. They know him. I mean, he works with my dad and they know we’re going out. It’s just they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they knew we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: So, they just can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Right. Okay. So you want to come to Yakima and —
CALLER: And get a pregnancy test first I guess.
CLINIC: Okay. Where do you live right now?
CALLER: I’m in Parkland.
CLINIC: Parkland?
CALLER: Yeah. It’s south of Tacoma.
CLINIC: South of Tacoma.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. So you’re going to drive two hours here for a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, I just don’t want anybody to know me. And that’s where my boyfriend wanted to go, so.
CLINIC: Right. All I’m saying is you should probably have a pregnancy test first and make sure that you’re pregnant before you have to drive two hours.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Do you know what I mean?
CALLER: Is there anyplace in Tacoma that you know of?
CLINIC: Yeah. Actually, there’s a good place. It’s called the Cascade Family Planning. And they are at 7509 Custer Road. And that’s Tacoma, 98499. Do you want me to make you an appointment for there?
CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. But do you know if I wasn’t pregnant, if I could get birth control?
CLINIC: Yeah. And they would give it to you.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Would they have to know about anything or tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. They would have a nurse practitioner give you a pap smear and stuff, and then she would just make sure that you’re okay; you don’t have any weird smells or anything. And then she would give you some birth control pills or Depo or Levonelle.
CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. Nobody needs to know what kind of birth control you use.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Lisa.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And let me give you the number for Cascade. They won’t be answering the phones until probably after 3 today. But their phone number is 1-800-822-7857.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Thank you.
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Olympia Planned Parenthood. Can you hold, please?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Thanks.
(pause)
CLINIC: Hi. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was especially calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We don’t at this clinic. Are you looking for a place in Olympia that does?
CALLER: Well, yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. I can tell you about the two that do.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. One is called Eastside Women’s Health. It’s on Eastside Street, right down Helm. The other is called Sound Choice. And you can look both of them up in the phone book. Have you already had a pregnancy test?
CALLER: No, I just haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and I’m just worried about it.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, we do do free pregnancy tests.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah. And if you come in for those and if it does turn out that you’re pregnant, we can give you a referral to one of the places that do abortions.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just the thing is, like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: We don’t have to tell anybody in any case.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Even if I was getting an abortion?
CLINIC: Yeah. Well, we don’t do abortions, so we wouldn’t deal with that part of it.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just I was actually just wanting to find out if I was pregnant. So I could come in there?
CLINIC: Yeah, you can. Yeah. We usually only do pregnancy tests in the morning. But if you feel like you really can’t wait until Monday, then it’s okay.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, you can.
CALLER: Could I get it like the same day?
CLINIC: Probably. If you think you’re going to want to do it that way, I think the best bet would be to wait until Monday – because we’re going to be really busy this afternoon.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Can you wait until Monday? Would that be okay?
CALLER: I think so. Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: But if I got birth control, would anybody have to know about that though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh. Okay. It’s just —
CLINIC: No. Let me put it this way. We don’t check on how old you are. You don’t have to provide proof. Okay? So you’re as old as you tell us you are.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That make sense?
CALLER: Well, the thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the birth control pills if I was on them?
CLINIC: Yes. If you sign that it’s okay, then he can.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Well, I need to talk to him to see if he can bring me in. Could I call and talk to you if I had any other questions? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Karen, and you absolutely can. Anybody who works up here can answer questions for you. I should let you know about one other thing.
CALLER: What’s that?
CLINIC: In the state of Washington, if you are under age and your boyfriend’s 22, that’s considered statutory rape.
CALLER: But what is — he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: I know. That’s the way the law is written, and it’s not a matter of whether or not you consent. I’m just telling you because if you come in and you tell us that, we’re required by the law to tell Social Services about that.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: So I’m just letting you know what all your options are.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So you can come in and get that pregnancy test if you want to.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Eastside Women’s Health.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: How much does that cost?
CLINIC: Well, if you’re under 12 weeks, the cost for a pre-exam is between 90 and $105. The procedure cost is 380. And then you’re billed separately for your lab work which is around $20 for blood work.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like it’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 like on the 20th, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Not in the state of Washington, you don’t have to inform your parents.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Really.
CALLER: Okay. So my boyfriend could be there with me and it’d be all right?
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. That’s fine. What you need to do — Have you had a pregnancy test done anywhere?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Are you here in Olympia?
CALLER: I live in Lacey.
CLINIC: Okay. You can come down to our office. And if you can, you know, do a urine sample for us, we can give you a confirmation of pregnancy. And you can apply by phone for DSHS. It will pay for all your medical here.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. But the thing is, we don’t want anyone to know about us. So if he was paying for it all, would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: No. No. Nobody’s going to tell anybody anything.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But if you didn’t have the money, then you could apply for the state in your own right for medical due to pregnancy.
CALLER: Oh. Well, he’s 22. He has a job and everything.
CLINIC: Yeah. Okay. So —
CALLER: I mean, he said he would take care of everything.
CLINIC: That’s fine. So what is it you need now at this point in time? What do you want to do?
CALLER: I just have to call and see when I can come in basically.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second.
(long pause)
CLINIC: Are you still there?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: I’m sorry to keep you holding for so long. Can you tell me the first day of your last menstrual cycle?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: January 3rd. Okay. So let’s see, today’s the 4th. You’d be under five weeks, so you wouldn’t be eligible for a surgical procedure. You would be eligible for a medical procedure, if you’re right. The cost is different. It’s $590, and that includes lab fees.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if there’s any way I couldn’t be pregnant?
CLINIC: Do I know what now?
CALLER: Is there any way that I’m not pregnant?
CLINIC: You don’t have sex.
CALLER: Well, no. I mean like — Is there any way — Like I haven’t had my period for a long time. Is there any way that I’m not pregnant?
CLINIC: Well, it hasn’t been that long. You said January 1st was your last period, right?
CALLER: January 3rd, yeah.
CLINIC: January 3rd. Yeah. So it hasn’t been that long.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah, you would be under five weeks.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I could come in there for birth control — like could you guys do a pregnancy test and make sure?
CLINIC: You can walk in and do a free pregnancy test.
CALLER: And if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could you guys do birth control?
CLINIC: You’d have to make an appointment to do that.
CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?
CLINIC: Nope, only you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Believe me that’s at anyplace you go to in the state of Washington. It’s all confidential. Okay? So don’t stress about that.
CALLER: Okay. I just have so many questions, I don’t know. If I thought of anything else could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Candace (sp).
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yep, that’s fine.
CALLER: All right. So when do you guys ordinarily do pregnancy tests there?
CLINIC: You can walk in anytime, and we close at 4:30 today. We’re closed from 12 to 1 for lunch. The only days that we can’t do it is on Thursdays. That’s our surgery day.
CALLER: Okay.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not here. We get you set up for them. They do the actual procedures in Spokane.
CALLER: Okay. Do you know like if they would — It’s just I’m worried because like, well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: No, never. (laughs) It’s your choice and it’s up to you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: It’s just, the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because like I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m scared, so.
CLINIC: So do you know that you are?
CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for awhile.
CLINIC: Okay. So December 26. Okay, hang on. Today is March 1. Yeah, that puts you at 9.5 weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: What time do you normally do the pregnancy tests?
CLINIC: You can walk in for that any time. We close at 5:00.
