CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Federal Way. This is Kathy. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We provide abortion services on Wednesdays only.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that normally cost?

CLINIC: Our usual and customary fee is about $650. You may be eligible for a discount based on income and family size.

CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just the thing is, I’m going to be — I’ll be 14 like later on this month, and I don’t have any income. But my boyfriend’s 22. He has a job. Could he just pay for it?

CLINIC: Um-hum. So are you — how far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just — the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26th. So. We’re just really worried.

CLINIC: Where is my little calendar? Have you had a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, that’s probably the first thing you should do is come in and get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: They’re free.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: So if you want to come in today, we’re doing them until 4:00 on a walk-in basis.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But would you really have to, or —

CLINIC: No. Not in the state of Washington.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what time are you doing the pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Until 4:00.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today?

CLINIC: Well, we would have to schedule an appointment for you to be seen by the clinician.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s prescription drug, so you have to be seen by a medical provider, and we don’t do that on a walk-in basis.

CALLER: Oh. But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Yeah?

CALLER: (laughs) I just have a lot of questions. Are you guys open tomorrow if I can’t come in today?

CLINIC: No, we’re not. We’ll be open again on Monday, and we do that from 9:30 till 1:00 and then again from 2:00 to 5:00.

CALLER: Okay. Are you open like during the lunch hour?

CLINIC: We are open, but we don’t do that during the lunch hour because our employees need to go to lunch too.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Bye bye.

CLINIC: San Juan Island Planned Parenthood. This is Cheryl.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not here.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: No. We refer out to places on the mainland.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? What kind of information did you need? Did you need to come in and get any testing done and for confirmation?

CALLER: Well, I was just wondering if I could ask some questions really. Like I’m just worried about all this because — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We have completely confidential means on taking care of that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And we also have programs that would cover the cost.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Especially because of your age.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Well, that’s very good. That’s very nice. (laughs) So we wouldn’t have to worry about that. Do you need to come in and get a confirmation though by getting a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I just — I don’t know what I really need, but I just am worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Understandably so. Are you able to come in today and do that pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, what are your hours today?

CLINIC: We’re open until 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Otherwise, Jean is here Monday from 10 until 2:00 and she’d be able to do that for you then.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s pretty much whatever will work better for you.

CALLER: Well, I would want my boyfriend to come with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: That is perfectly fine. He is more than welcome.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you wanted to come in today and have that test done, that would be great. If not, Monday from 10:00 to 2:00 Jean would be more than happy to see you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there for birth control?

CLINIC: You sure could, and everything would be taken care of, or your boyfriend would be more than — it would be more than nice for him to help. (laughs) But we do have programs if you needed some assistance. But we do the birth control pills plus the shots once a month or once every three months.

CALLER: Well, would he be able to pick up the pills for me if —

CLINIC: Certainly. I would just have to have you sign a piece of paper that has his name on it that authorizes him to pick the pills up for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. So that way my parents — well, you wouldn’t have to tell my parents about birth control?

CLINIC: Not at all. We would put an alert in the computer that you are not to be contacted at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s pretty much you come here or he comes here, and that’s it.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: So nobody would have to know about any of this?

CLINIC: Nobody at all.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: It’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We strive for that, because we understand. We’ve been there too.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you can get here before 5:00, if you get here a little before that would be great so that we — because we have a little bit of paperwork to do.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: But if not, Monday 10 to 2:00 Jean is here, and just wander on in. Do you know where we are?

CALLER: Well, yeah. My boyfriend does.

CLINIC: Okay, good.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re very welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Kenmore. Can you hold, please?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s going to be based on your income.

CALLER: Oh. Well the thing is, well, I’m going to be 14 in March and I don’t have an income.

CLINIC: Okay. Then it’s probably about $350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What I recommend is that you apply for medical coupons.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That way it will pay for the abortion.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know — Like I’m just kind of scared because like my friend told me you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, we wouldn’t tell your parents ’cause we have confidentiality here.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to tell someone other than my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But I’d still recommend applying for medical coupons.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Can you keep holding for a minute?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thanks.

(pause)

CLINIC – (New Person): Hi, there.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: You had some questions about abortion?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Sorry, Jenna was — she’s back making appointment. You’re 13?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: You’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I’ll be 14 on the 9th. But I was wondering if they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: There’s no legal law, we cannot tell your parents anything about having an abortion. It doesn’t matter how old you are.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, we have strict confidentiality here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my boyfriend’s 22. Would he be able to take are of everything though?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: He said he would pay for everything and — like when we were talking about it he said that he would pay for everything. It’s just we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: Well, here’s the deal. It’s up to you if you want to tell us his age when you come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? I mean, he can sign things. That doesn’t mean we’re asking how old he is.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I mean? Like if he has to a credit card or something like that, we’re not going to ask how old he is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? If you want to give that information out you can, but then we’re going to have to deal with a whole other ball of wax.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, technically, you know, you’re a minor and he’s not. So we are responsible by law to deal with that with you, if you tell us that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know, right now you don’t have to — Whatever we’re talking about doesn’t count because I don’t know you, I don’t know your name. You can come in and I won’t know if you’re the person I talked to because I don’t — don’t worry about it right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But when you come in, first thing is, we will not contact your parents whatsoever unless you sign a document telling us you want us to. Don’t worry about that. You can have an abortion, and that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: As far as the age thing goes, it’s up to you if you disclose that information to us, like if you tell us that your boyfriend is 22, then we have to talk to you about it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I don’t —

CALLER: I just don’t — I don’t want him to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Right, because there’s laws around that, and they don’t — You know, it kinda sucks cause they don’t always apply to everybody, but we have to by law deal with it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how long does it take to get an abortion?

CLINIC: You would be at the clinic 3 to 4 hours. The abortion takes about 3 to 4 minutes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just, I would have to — My boyfriend would have to take me. I wouldn’t have any other way to get there. Would that be all right if he was there with me though?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Like I said, it’s up to you if you tell us. We’re not going to ask you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I mean, you give us whatever information you want. We don’t know if you’re telling the truth or not anyway.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: We just go with what you tell us. We’ll ask what your age is and you have to put it down on the form. But we don’t ask him any personal questions unless you tell us. Then if you tell us he’s 22, I mean, you know, then we know. But. You see what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, the main reason why I’m calling is, like the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because like I haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and we’re just really worried. So —

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You should probably come in and do that first.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Because of your age, it’s very common to skip your period.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Do you guys use any kind of birth control?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No? Do you have sexual intercourse like on a regular basis?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: A couple times a week, whatever?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You could be pregnant. So, yeah, you should probably — you can come in here. We do it on a walk-in. You don’t have to pay. And then we’ll do the test and find out first.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Oh, for sure. Yeah, definitely. We can give that to you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would anyone have to know about birth control?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Would anyone have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. There’s nothing. You can come here and be seen for anything you want to, and we don’t have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, since I can’t drive, would my boyfriend be able to pick up like the birth control pills though?

CLINIC: If you give us his first name.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And tell us that.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Our only concern is that, you know, with such a huge age difference, you know, making sure that you’re safe and that you’re choosing to be in this relationship.

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: You know? And that you know —

CALLER: I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. It’s just, we can’t have a kid right now.

CLINIC: Right. Okay. Do your parents know that you guys are together?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, he works with my dad. But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: So they just — they can’t find out at all. So you sure you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Not if you don’t tell us.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We only go with what you tell us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can tell us he’s 16. I don’t know. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know?

CALLER: You’ve been so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like this.

CLINIC: Yeah. We do have a counselor here if you need to talk with a counselor; at any point you can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But come in for that pregnancy test first. I mean, it’s silly to even, you know, put the cart before the horse if you’re not pregnant. I mean, then we don’t need to worry about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I mean?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I think you should get the test, find out, and then decide what you want to do on that. My name’s Amy.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I’m here most of the time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can talk to me. I can do your tests for you if I’m here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Is that helpful?

CALLER: Yes, thank you.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: You’re 14 and your boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Well, that I can’t really help you with. But, no, we don’t need parent. We don’t need parent consent in the state of Washington.

CALLER: Okay. So would anybody have to know about this then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So could I come in there for like a pregnancy test just to make sure I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, when do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: You can come in this afternoon. What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: What is your last name?

CALLER: Well, do you know — Like I’m just wondering, do you — If it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: You can use condoms and stuff until we can get you for an exam if that were to be negative. You would have to have an exam before we do any birth control.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Not if you want them to know, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just the thing is, I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the birth control pills?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, I need to call my boyfriend to see if he can bring me in.
