CLINIC: Prince William Women’s Clinic. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: $300 for local anesthesia, that is just the numbing of your cervix, and $340 is with Demerol and Thallium. And if you take that, it’s going to cost you $340 and you need to have a driver with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m going to be 14 later on this month. Would you guys have to tell my parents or anything? It’s just, my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: Okay, can you hold on please?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh?

CLINIC: If you turn 18, then that’s fine. We just need to see your ID.

CALLER: Well, I’m going to be 14.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re 14.

CALLER: Well, I will be on the 20th.

CLINIC: I’m sorry, we still need a parental consent.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Mm-hmm.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to do that? Like, I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Well, either that or a legal guardian. Somebody will. Have a legal guardian with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, that’s —

CLINIC: We need to see the documentation.

CALLER: But that would be my parents.

CLINIC: Either them or somebody who is in charge of you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign it?

CLINIC: No Ma’am.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: This is still by law. We can’t do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well If I come in for a pregnancy test, would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: For pregnancy testing?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Nuh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because, you know, pregnancy testing is, we have nothing to be doing on your body. But the abortion, there’s something can go wrong.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s why we need a parental consent. Because if there’s anything, then they need to be able to know what’s going on.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend if I had a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend?

CALLER: Yeah. It’s just we were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us.

CLINIC: Oh, no. We don’t tell anybody else’s medical issues, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I come in for a pregnancy test — Like the main reason why I’m worried about all this is I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and we’re just scared.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But did you do pregnancy testing yourself or not?

CALLER: No. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: If you have any pap-smear done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control though?

CLINIC: Because you’re underage?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That we need your parental consent saying that you need to go on birth control.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. So there’s no way to get birth control without telling my parents?

CLINIC: I’m really sorry.

CALLER: Oh. Alright. Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I don’t know, ma’am.

CALLER: Well, is there anywhere else?

CLINIC: You don’t have anybody that is an legal guardian for you?

CALLER: Well, my parents.

CLINIC: Besides them.

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: I guess that’s the only thing you have to do. You need to tell them, or find out first if you’re pregnant or not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. Uh-huh.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Mary.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Richmond Medical Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s $260 to be awake, $460 to be asleep, or $295 for the IV sedation.

CALLER: It’s just I’m going to be 14 at the end of this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. A parent has to sign for you. That’s required by law.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell them?

CLINIC: The only way is that you would need to go before a judge.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And what you could do is, if you’re interested in doing that, you would need to call tomorrow after 1 and speak with Jill. She’s our director, and she could help you with that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, does the judge ever say no though?

CLINIC: That I don’t know. I don’t deal with that at all. She does.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. The best bet is going to be to call Jill tomorrow so you can kind of get the ball rolling.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh, between 9:30 and 3:30 Tuesday through Friday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?

CLINIC: No. You would need to make an appointment for that, and that’s $50.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But I could get birth control and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about all this. We want birth control so we don’t have to worry about it, so.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Well, are you guys like a Planned Parenthood place?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Karen. Or you could just wait until tomorrow and talk to Jill, and she could answer any questions that you have.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. This is Planned Parenthood. Kimberly speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Can you hold on for a moment?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, thanks.

(pause)

CLINIC: I had a line of people. Okay. Alright, you needed to know different information about —

CALLER: Is this Kimberly?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yes. (laughs) Okay.

CALLER: I’m sorry.

CLINIC: Are you in school or are you in the working field?

CALLER: I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Homeschooled?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But the thing is, my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it all and you wouldn’t have to tell them about it to anybody?

CLINIC: No, because we have to have at least one parent signs a consent form.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way around that because I can’t tell my parents about this at all.

CLINIC: Okay. I believe — I can give you the number to Washington DC clinic. I don’t believe that you have to have consent for that. Let me pull that up for you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we can’t do it unless you’re either — one of your parents, your legal guardian.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Only way that, you know, we can do that. Let’s see.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: You sure can, but we’re actually getting ready to close. But on Monday we’re open for pregnancy tests 12:30 to 4:30, and then we resume doing them from 5:30 to 6:30.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. No. That’s absolutely — you don’t have to. And we also have what we call the HOPE program where if you wanted to get on birth control, you don’t have to have a parent sign for that either. It’s just when it’s something of the medical procedure like that, you know, and you’re underage we have to have the consent form.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But do you want the DC number or did you want to come in for —

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said he would pay cash for everything. So would his name have to be on any forms if he was paying for like the pregnancy test and everything?

CLINIC: No. Pregnancy tests is absolutely free. You don’t have to pay anything for it. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay. So if it turned out I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You sure could.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Right, right. Because it’s that worry, and it’s very stressful. We have what we call the HOPE program which is $15.

CALLER: For the birth control?

CLINIC: For you to come in, talk to a nurse practitioner, and then she can write you a scrip, and then each birth control pack would be $12 per month.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: He sure would be able to, yes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And he can pay cash for them so that there’s no — you know. But we will have to have your name on our records because we have to, you know, as —

CALLER: Well, yeah. I just, we just don’t want his name on anything, so.

CLINIC: Right. Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s perfectly fine. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you know how to get here or does he know how to get here?

CALLER: He knows.

CLINIC: Okay. I would suggest coming in on Monday and, you know, doing a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. And I could get the DC number from you guys if I needed to?

CLINIC: Yes. The DC, yes. Yes.

CALLER: If I turned out pregnant I could go there?

CLINIC: Right, uh-huh. Are you more than two weeks late for your period?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I haven’t had my period since January 3. So that’s why we’re just really worried.

CLINIC: Yeah. Okay. Well, definitely come in on Monday, okay?

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure in DC they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’ll find out for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right, and we’ll see you on Monday then.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

(ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Wanda. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: You do?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be how old in March?

CALLER: 14.

CLINIC: Okay. No, you don’t have to be a specific age, but being you’re a minor then your parents would have to sign the notification.

CALLER: They wouldn’t — is there any way not to do that, because like my parents can’t find out at all. Like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me, and they just can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, your boyfriend is 22 and you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah. But I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: But by the law, honey, that’s considered as being statutory rape.

CALLER: What? I don’t — what do you mean? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: Well, by you being underage, 13, and he’s 22, then even though you do consensual sex with him then the law states that your mother can charge him with statutory rape.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to — like is there any way not to let them find out?

CLINIC: Well, and you still could not get married to him without her consent because you’re underage.

CALLER: Well, we were going to wait to get married, but —

CLINIC: You still have to get her consent.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Well, if you — you can go to the court. Are you in a city or county?

CALLER: I’m in Boonsmill.

CLINIC: Okay. In Boonsmill?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You can call to the courthouse there and tell them you would like to get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need like a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. Can you remember that?

CALLER: Judicial bypass?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Call them and tell them that you would like to come in for a judicial bypass. They will give you the instructions on what to do from there, when to come in, and what they need you to do.

CALLER: Okay. But then it would be all right and everything?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Then it would be okay?

CLINIC: Well, the judge — you’d have to go before the judge.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay? And then the judge will give you — he will either grant it yes or grant it no.

CALLER: What if he says no? What do I do then?

CLINIC: If he says no, then you just be in the position to where you’re going to have to let your parents know because you can’t get it done without them being notified.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t — there’s nothing else you can do besides that at all?

CLINIC: No. Nuh-uh. So those are the only two options that you have as of right now.

CALLER: Well, does he usually say no?

CLINIC: Well, they usually — Well, it all just depends on what the case is. But a lot of times, you know, the judge will go ahead and grant it. But it all just depends on what the circumstances is. Now, you may have to tell him that your boyfriend is that age.

CALLER: Well, what — if like I didn’t tell him, do you think he’d say yes and it would be all okay?

CLINIC: Well, I mean, he may — well, I really —

CALLER: Does he have to know?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t know exactly what questions he will ask you. But he might ask you that about the age of the, you know, of the guy you’re involved with. And so then it may portray a problem for your boyfriend but —

CALLER: What could happen to him? What do you mean?

CLINIC: But, you know, just don’t worry about that part right now. Just the important thing is just to go ahead. Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, let me see, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me see.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Now, what was the first day of your last period? You said December?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, it was probably like the 5th.

CLINIC: Okay, December 5th.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let’s see. Okay, December 5th, and today is the 15th. Okay. According to what you’re telling me, if that is correct, okay, you are 10 weeks and about 3 days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we only do them up to 12 weeks.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Up to 12 weeks, and let me see what we would have open to that time. Let me see. Okay. We have the 22nd available.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? The 22nd would put you at 11 weeks and 2 days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If that is correct according to the information you’re giving me, okay?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you want me to put you down here to go ahead and schedule you. Because you can’t do it past 12 weeks here, but Chartlottsville do them up to 13 weeks.

CALLER: Well, I would — I don’t know. I have to call my boyfriend to see when he can get off work and ask him.

CLINIC: Okay. Really by you being so close, so far along in the weeks, then he really — I mean, you’re going to have to make the decision yourself when to schedule because —

CALLER: Well, he’s the only way that I’d get there.

CLINIC: So if he say well —

CALLER: And he’s the only one that could pay for it.

CLINIC: So if he say he can’t get off from work, then what are you going to do?

CALLER: Well, he just has to — he can get off work. He just has to ask for it.

CLINIC: Okay. See I only have two slots open, and they can fill up right after we hang up.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You see? Because we have people calling in all the time, you know, just like you’re calling in. So you know, I could have somebody call in right after you do, and see I only have the two slots for the 22nd, and then see you can’t wait until —

CALLER: Okay, well, what are those slots?

CLINIC: Because you only have — I have two appointments that’s open for February the 22nd at 8:45 and then — but see if you wait any later that will put you too far.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Because our next one we schedule would be on the 26th, and the 26th would put you past 12 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $295. And then it would be an extra $75 if your blood type is negative.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it would be about $370. It could cost $370.

CALLER: Okay. So like if he brings me in, do you guys have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: No. Uh-huh. It’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell anybody. The only way they find out is if you tell them.

CALLER: Okay. So you guys wouldn’t tell about him or anything, and he wouldn’t like get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: Well, no, that’s not up to us to do.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: You know, that’s really not our call, but we have to let you know that by the law that is classified as statutory rape, and it could be some problems down the line.

CALLER: Oh, but you wouldn’t tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: No, but we don’t — we just — when you come in to see us we treat you and strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, but do you want to go ahead and schedule?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I don’t — I guess.

CLINIC: See, it’s probably best to put your — to go ahead and schedule you because if you call back then the appointments may be taken.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then we couldn’t schedule you until the 26th, but you would be too far then.

CALLER: Okay. Well, yeah, I guess go ahead and schedule me.

CLINIC: Okay. Now, are you at a phone to where you can write down some stuff?

CALLER: Well, I have a pen and paper.

CLINIC: Okay. First of all, I have to ask you some information. Do you have a few minutes?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Because I have to ask you some information so we can set you up a file when you come in. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, like after the abortion could I come and get birth control too?

CLINIC: Yes, uh-huh.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Not getting birth control pills. You don’t have to. Your mom doesn’t have to sign. You don’t have to get consent for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just come in and you will get an annual physical, okay? And then we can go ahead and give you birth control pills.

CALLER: But like, is it all right like if my boyfriend brings me and everything?

CLINIC: Yeah, um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anything about him?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. No. He’s just — you would just come in. You know, we would just deal with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because you want to get birth control pills, that’s okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can come in and get them and —

CALLER: All right. Oh. Can I call you back in just a sec? My friend’s mom is about to be here. I got to let you go.

CLINIC: Okay.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. What you would need to do, there are other options. There is also adoption.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend — we just decided on doing this because they can’t find out at all about this because like — Well, like my problem is I can’t tell my parents at all because well my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re in love and we’re going to get married and everything, but like if they find out that — I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: Right. Okay. And we do offer prenatal care as well. What I’d probably need you to do is call our counselors. They can better assist you. Okay? You have to have counseling, and you will need parental consent.

CALLER: I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Okay. I understand that. Can you hold on one moment?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Is there a number that we can reach you so that one of the counselors can call and talk with you, go over your options?

CALLER: Well, I’m at my friend’s house and her mom’s here, so there wouldn’t be any way to call.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you call back in like 15 minutes?

CALLER: Oh. Who should I ask for?

CLINIC: You can ask to speak to Barbara.

CALLER: Barbara?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

TAPE – 176 Pt 2: The Call Back

(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Virginia Beach Office. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Can I talk to Barbara?

CLINIC: This is she. Hold on one moment, okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Can I talk to Barbara?

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: I was — my friend’s mom came in and I had to hang up real quick.

CLINIC: My name is Natishina Baldy (sp). I’m the clinical director.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, you’re 14 years old?

CALLER: Uh-huh. Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re 13.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If you come in here and you tell me that your boyfriend is 22, I have to report it to the police.

CALLER: Well, what could — okay.

CLINIC: That is considered statutory rape. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Upfront right now. Now, if you go to the courts and you’re 13 years old —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: — you can go to the — you have to call the courts and find out where you go, and you get what they call just — you get a bypass.

CALLER: What’s that?

CLINIC: Where you can go to the court, tell them that you know what you want and that you don’t want your parents to know about it, and they will sign a paper and let you get the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like what if they say no?

CLINIC: Then you can’t do it.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: Not anything really. If you’re 13 years old, your parents have a lot of say about it. Where are your parents right now?

CALLER: They’re at home. I’m at my friend’s house.

CLINIC: Okay. And they don’t even know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What will happen if they find out?

CALLER: I don’t know. I don’t want to find out.

CLINIC: Okay. The only thing you can do right now is to go to court.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need like a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: No. No, no, no. You call them up and you ask — you tell them that you’re pregnant and that you want the abortion and that you’re underage, and ask them where you go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do they usually say no, or what?

CLINIC: They usually say yes, but we’ve never had a 13-year-old that’s come in. We’ve had 15-year-olds who come in.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? The fact that you’re 13 — why can’t you tell your parents?

CALLER: Because they would totally — I don’t — they would flip out. Like they just hate my boyfriend because they think he’s too old, and they just — I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Okay. You can’t leave the state because they can get him for kidnap. He’ll go to prison. He may even go to prison now, the fact that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Really.

CALLER: Okay. So like what can I do so that he doesn’t get in trouble?

CLINIC: He might get in trouble, period, okay? I’m not trying to be ugly to you, angel, but 13-year-olds and 22 is just too much. It really is.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So what you need to do is, you need to call for the juvenile courts and find out what you can do as far as going through an abortion.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now if you want to call me back, you can call me back at this number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 641-1295.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I mean, what we’re talking about is some really some serious stuff, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So call me back at 641-1295 after you’ve called the courts. What county do you live in?

CALLER: Well, I live in Princess Anne.

CLINIC: Okay. I would call the courthouse for the juvenile courts and find out how you can go about signing papers so that you can sign for your own procedure. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Can I have your first name?

CALLER: I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Christi? Okay. I’m Nancy.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Okay. So call me back, okay?

CALLER: Well, like if I talk to the court, like will they have to talk to my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hold on. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
