CLINIC: Women’s Clinic. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. We do under local and general.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s $475 to go to sleep, and it’s $330 to stay awake.

CALLER: Okay. My friend said that since like I’m going to be 14 in later on this month —

CLINIC: Oh. Well, you need to go D.C. and Maryland. Oh, 14 weeks pregnant, or?

CALLER: No, 14 years old.

CLINIC: Years old. Okay. You need to bring a letter if you’re going to be awake, and if you want to go to sleep your parents have to be here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anyone?

CLINIC: No. No, you can’t do that. If you want to go to sleep you can’t do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Yeah. If you stay awake you need to bring a letter.

CALLER: Oh. From who?

CLINIC: From your guardian or your parents.

CALLER: Oh. But I don’t want them to know. I mean, they know that me and my boyfriend are going out; they just don’t —

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s the law in Virginia. You know?

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Just stay awake and bring a letter.

CALLER: From who?

CLINIC: From — we don’t usually check it (chuckle).

CALLER: You don’t?

CLINIC: No. Just bring a letter.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You need to make an appointment though.

CALLER: It’s just the main reason that I’m worried about all this is I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Yeah. Hold on a second. Let me just finish this one call, and then I’ll be right with you, okay? Hold on, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. You want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I would have to call my boyfriend to see because he’d be the only way I could get there. But do you guys do pregnancy test there? Just to make sure.

CLINIC: Yeah, we do. But we do the test here on the day of the appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We have to have a positive pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, is there any problem with my boyfriend coming in though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You just need to bring a letter.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. But —

CLINIC: But you need to have an appointment.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. We can schedule — not on the same day, but we can schedule you next-door —

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about birth control?

CLINIC: You talk to the nurse.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: No. That’s personal.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No, we won’t do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore, so we were wanting to get birth control. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So just when I come in, bring a letter?

CLINIC: Yeah. Do you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, what does the letter need to say?

CLINIC: That they’re allowing you to have an abortion.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, let me call my boyfriend to see when he can bring me.

CLINIC: Okay. We do it on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. So let me call him and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Josie (?).

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, do you know how much that costs or anything?

CLINIC: It depends how far along you are. When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: It was like around the first week in December.

CLINIC: December 5, December 6th? When about, hon?

CALLER: Probably like the 5th.

CLINIC: That’s going to make you right now about two weeks along. Do you — how old are you?

CALLER: Like, well I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know that in Virginia you need parental consent?

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way not to do that? Because like my parents can’t find out because — well my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but they think he’s too old for me, and they would totally flip out.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on a second, hon. Let me see what else I can get you for, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Honey?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You can go to DC and there’s no parental notification laws.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right. You want to get their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 202-347-8512.

CALLER: Okay. And it’s all right like if my boyfriend takes me and everything?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: Well, I’ll give you a heads up.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s quite older than you. Quite. And it’s very illegal for him to date you.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: I don’t understand. How is that illegal?

CLINIC: Because, honey, you’re not 18, and he’s over 18.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. I don’t understand what you mean.

CLINIC: There’s a law against that, honey. Considering how older he is.

CALLER: Is there anything — like would he get in trouble?

CLINIC: Yeah, he could.

CALLER: What would happen?

CLINIC: He can go to jail.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there —

CLINIC: Take care of the first thing. If you want to go ahead and get an abortion, give them a call and make an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He can go with you, but if anybody does ask you, in the future you could possibly get, you know, messy because he is significantly older than you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: I really can’t answer that question. Because, I mean, if I give you an answer you may not like it and then he could possibly go to jail, especially if your parents press charges against him.

CALLER: So but they — like — no one would tell my parents though, would they?

CLINIC: I wouldn’t tell.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like s,ay that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control there at your office?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can get birth control at our office no matter how old you are.

CALLER: Oh, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t tell on my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Nope. Well, that would be — well, (sighs) — look, the problem is that because your boyfriend is so significantly older than you and the fact that you are under the age of 16 — now if you were 16 and he was what he is, that’s a whole other story. But since you’re 14 it makes it even worse.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yes. So I mean, I’m not familiar with the Virginia laws, but it would be determined by the, one of our nurses if she did see you —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — if you’re in a bad situation. Now we won’t deny you birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can come in anytime and get birth control, but I need you to start using birth control.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so like if I didn’t say anything it would be all right?

CLINIC: Yes. Now, my question is, that I have to ask you.

CALLER: Oh, you do?

CLINIC: Huh? I have to ask you these questions since we’re on the phone. Why don’t you make that appointment at the downtown clinic. How long have you and your boyfriend been dating?

CALLER: Like about a year.

CLINIC: Can you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

(dialing sounds)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to someone.

CLINIC: You asked me. I’m back.

CALLER: I’m sorry. My friend’s mom came in and we had to hang up.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your primary concern is this, is that if you do not want to keep the pregnancy to term you need to facilitate that soon before the price gets too big, okay?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Then — I want to give you a heads up though. I do not know what the clinician’s going to do when she does talk to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, the best thing is to always be honest. But if your parents do discover that he is dating you and his age, since you were dating as young as you were and I’m assuming correctly that you guys have been having sex for awhile —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: — it can be a big thing. Not only could it be a big thing, but it is a very big thing.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So he — I mean, I’m not passing judgment.

CALLER: Um-hum.

CLINIC: But his age dating you, the fact that you’re 14, no matter how in love you are is not a very good thing.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: I’m not going to tell anybody. I don’t know your name, whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But if your parents ever found out, he will go to jail.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I call you back? Because I don’t know what to do, but —

CLINIC: My name is Samantha, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Call me back, okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning, Commonwealth Women.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Locals, you’re awake during the procedure, $290; General, you’re asleep during the procedure, $475.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s by appointment only.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — I’m just worried. My friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We need notification, parental notification. That means your parents have to come with you.

CALLER: Is there any way around that?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Because I can’t tell them at all. I mean, if they found out — they know my boyfriend; they just don’t like him. But if they found out that we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. We still need parental notification. It’s the law.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: You certainly can. We do —

CALLER: But would you have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Urine pregnancy tests cost $5; blood tests cost $25.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. He said he would pay for everything. But would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for everything?

CLINIC: No, he wouldn’t.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?

CLINIC: You would have to set a GYN appointment with our nurse practitioner.

CALLER: Oh, all right. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Only if you told them.

CALLER: Really? Okay. All right. So, I don’t know. So there’s no way that I wouldn’t be able to do this without my parents knowing?

CLINIC: For the termination your parents need to know.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I can’t advise you on that.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can talk to anyone who answers the phone.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, are they as nice as you?

CLINIC: I believe so, yes. We have a nice group of people here.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Hampton Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do at our Norfolk location but not at Hampton. We can counsel you at Hampton —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — but the procedure’s done at Norfolk.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if there’s a specific age limit for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You need to have a parent come with you —

CALLER: Is there any way not to do that? Like my parents can’t find out at all, because like — well, the problem is like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Okay. You know, I mean, you can’t get married at 14.

CALLER: Well, yeah, we were going to wait, but —

CLINIC: Okay. Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Ark.

CLINIC: In where?

CALLER: Ark.

CLINIC: Where’s that?

CALLER: It’s north of where you’re at.

CLINIC: It’s north of where — How far from me?

CALLER: I’m not real sure.

CLINIC: Okay. Who would bring you?

CALLER: My boyfriend.

CLINIC: Okay. When could you get here?

CALLER: I don’t know. I’d have to call him and see.

CLINIC: Okay. Is there a number I can call you back?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m at my friend’s house and her mom’s here, so.

CLINIC: Is her — does her mom know what’s going on?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you call me back in 20 minutes?

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Pam.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wanting to talk to Pam.

CLINIC: She just went in with a patient. May I take a message for her?

TAPE – 177 Pt 3: The Call Back

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Hampton Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling to talk to Pam.

CLINIC: Okay. Could you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

(recorded music, long interval)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was asking about like my boyfriend. Is Pam there?

CLINIC: Oh. She’s with a patient. Are you the one that came in yesterday, Christian?

CALLER: No, I didn’t’ come in. I was asking questions.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Hold on.

(music)

CLINIC: This is Pam. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was asking about like my boyfriend and stuff.

CLINIC: Yes. Okay, sweetie. First of all, there’s two things I wanted to let you know. Number one, you know that 14 and 22 is illegal in the state of Virginia, right?

CALLER: What? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: That relationship is illegal. It’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: What could happen? I don’t — but we’re in love. I don’t understand.

CLINIC: I can certainly understand how you feel. I’m just telling you the law. Okay?

CALLER: Well, what could happen? What do I do?

CLINIC: What could happen is, is that you can go to the court and get a judgement that would allow you to have the procedure without your parents’ consent. You have to get to the courthouse, file the papers, pay the fees whatever it costs, and you’d have to call the courthouse nearest you and find out how you’d do it, okay? But when they, when your partner comes in they’re going to see that you are 14 and he is 22, and they may very well press charges.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what should I say about him?

CLINIC: I don’t know what you can say. It’s considered illegal. I mean, there’s — I don’t know what else to tell you except for the fact that in the state of Virginia that’s a reportable, illegal offense.

CALLER: Would they take him to jail or what? Like what do you mean?

CLINIC: Yes, they might.

CALLER: They wouldn’t.

CLINIC: They might.

CALLER: Well what — I don’t know what to do. Like — well, what if like — I don’t know.

CLINIC: I think that — first of all, when was your last period?

CALLER: It was the first week in December.

CLINIC: Your period was the first week in December? So you’re over 12 weeks pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, what does that mean?

CLINIC: Well, it means that in the state of Virginia you can only have a termination up to 14 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you are — let me see here — you are 11 weeks today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right? By my dates, okay? Which means you have three weeks to get your papers filed and get into a clinic.

CALLER: Okay. What if the —

CLINIC: If you don’t, it gets into the thousands of dollars to have the procedure done.

CALLER: Well, what if the judge says no?

CLINIC: He may say no, which means you’ll either have to tell mom and dad. I can tell you this much. If you don’t tell your parents, you run a much higher risk because of the problems that you’re going to face in terms of your age of having this baby. And if you don’t want to have this baby, I just really suggest that you tell your parents.

CALLER: I just can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Why not?

CALLER: Well, because they would totally flip out. I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: But they love you more than anything else. I mean, they want to do what’s best for you.

CALLER: They just don’t ever understand anything. I don’t — I can’t talk to them.

CLINIC: Who — how are you going to pay for this?

CALLER: My boyfriend was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Does he know how much it is?

CALLER: Well, he was — he was asking me to call and see.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re talking — you’re going to be looking at around $400 minimum, okay?

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Is that doable?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to call your local courthouse and see what the procedures are, but I wanted to give you a heads up on the fact that the relationship you’re entering into, even though it’s consensual meaning both of you consent, can still be looked at and charges can still be brought.

CALLER: Okay. Are you going to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: As your physician, everything is confidential that you tell me.

CALLER: If I came in there for the pregnancy test, would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Do you know if you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I, I don’t know. I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and —

CLINIC: And did it come up positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, then you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, are there any way that it would be wrong?

CLINIC: Probably not. Those are pretty accurate if you took it the right way.

CALLER: Oh. Well, all right.

CLINIC: I mean, you could certainly come in and see me. I just — if you’re far away from me I hate for you to wait, you know, waste travel time. But if you would like to both come in and talk with me, I can, you know, give you some of your options and kind of lay down, you know, what the Virginia law is.

CALLER: Okay. Well, we could both come in and talk to you?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right. And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, not at this time because it would just be a consult.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, sweetheart. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Charlotte. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, honey. At our Charlottesville and our Roanoke office.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like their numbers?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. Roanoke is area code 540-562-3457.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they have to — like is there like an age requirement for that or anything? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Is there a what, honey?

CALLER: Is there like an age requirement to have an abortion?

CLINIC: Is there an age?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. 18 and over you don’t need permission.

CALLER: Permission?

CLINIC: Under 18 you need a parent.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way not to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not.

CALLER: Because like my parents can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: I’m sorry. Absolutely not. I’m sorry. You have to tell them if you’re thinking of having an abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: That is the law.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? No one will do an abortion on you without a parent. Absolutely no one.

CALLER: And there’s no way to get around it at all?

CLINIC: Absolutely no one —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — will do an abortion under 18. Absolutely. It is a law, and each abortion facilities are following it very carefully, by the book. So if it’s your parents who is with you, there is identification and proof. Yeah. There’s a lot that you have to do if you’re underage.

CALLER: Like my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: What did I just tell you, honey?

CALLER: Well, I know, but what can I do? I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: I just told you. There is absolutely no way you can get around having an abortion and being underage.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if like — all right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: What’s that, honey?

CALLER: Well, I was wondering if like — well, what if I wasn’t pregnant? Do you guys like — like you have the pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: We do do pregnancy tests.

CALLER: Do you have to tell — like do my parents have to know about that?

CLINIC: Not for a pregnancy test, no.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right. Like, well, after the pregnancy test if like I wasn’t pregnant do you guys do birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, we do do birth control.

CALLER: Would it be all right like if my boyfriend paid for it?

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend pays for it and everything?

CLINIC: That will be fine.

CALLER: Because like he’s got a job and he’s 22. He said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. How old is he?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. Our clinic hours on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 3:00, on Thursdays from 9:00 to 7:00. You need an appointment.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see if he —

CLINIC: (unclear) Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, dear.

CALLER: But no one has to know about like birth control or the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No one has to know about that. Now the age issue between you and him, legally he could be prosecuted. You are way underage.

CALLER: What? I don’t — what could happen?

CLINIC: He is 22 years old.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I’m not going to debate that. I am only tell you, okay? It isn’t my business. I can see you but if anybody else finds out he can be charged.

CALLER: Well, what would happen to him?

CLINIC: You need — I can’t answer that. He is overage, and you’re underage.

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: I don’t know.

CALLER: He’s got to drive me. He’s the only one that could take me.

CLINIC: Okay. I mean, I can see you. I’m telling you I can see you. I am only telling you, you are underage. He is an adult.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He could be charged.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Not by us. I don’t interfere in that. I am telling you if your parents ever find out or anything, he could be charged. You are a minor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He is an adult. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So I’m just telling you that, all right?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Anything else?

CALLER: No. That’s it.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
