CLINIC: (Unclear). Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Can you speak up any louder? I can barely hear you.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: Okay. That’s a lot better. Thanks. What was your name again?

CLINIC: Yes. This is (unclear) Center. Dr. King’s office.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: To be asleep, 400, and the local is 300.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like my friend told me that — Like I’m going to be 14 years old later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You have to tell your mommy or your daddy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Yeah, but we can’t take you (unclear). The papers say you have to tell your mommy or your daddy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so there’s no way not to tell them?

(No response)

CALLER: Are you there?

CLINIC: You spoke before, no?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: You speak before to somebody else? No.

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. (Unclear).

CALLER: It’s just I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I’m scared. So like could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test? You can come. (Unclear).

CALLER: Okay. Well, would anybody have to know about a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: The pregnancy test, yes. We don’t have no (unclear).

CALLER: Okay. But does anybody have to know about a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: How old you say? Fourteen?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 20th.

CLINIC: Fourteen years, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If you want an examination you need to come with your mommy or your daddy together.

CALLER: Oh. But for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test you can buy (unclear) or CVS.

CALLER: Oh, well I just wasn’t sure if that was —

CLINIC: If you want to come here it’s $20 cash, the urine test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Mary.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Donna. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do abortions at our clinic, but we do — they do perform abortions at the Roanoke clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The clinic in Roanoke is 562-3457. And the area code is 540.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if there’s like a specific age requirement for that? Because like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. There is an age requirement.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But to get a — can you hold on one second? I’m going to find out this information for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can I get your first name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine. Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Because of your age, because you’re under 18, you have two options.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: First option is if you’re going to have an abortion is to have one of your parents accompany you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I can’t do that at all. Like, well, my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married, but they can’t find out because they hate him. They think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, the second option is something called judicial bypass. And to do that you have to go see a judge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you in Montgomery County?

CALLER: I’m in Mountain Lake.

CLINIC: Okay.

CLINIC (To Another Worker): She’s in Mountain Lake.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I’m going to give you the number for the juvenile court in Montgomery County.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if you can’t go through them, they’ll give you the number to the one that you can go through. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, the number there, and then we know that the judges there are very supportive —

CALLER: Okay. Do I have to get a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: I don’t think so. But you can call them. They’ll give you all that information. Also the Roanoke clinic, because they actually do the procedures there, will have more information for you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You have the Roanoke clinic number already, right?

CALLER: Uh-huh. Yeah.

CLINIC: Here’s the Montgomery County Juvenile Court phone number. Are you ready for it?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 540-980-3822.

CALLER: Okay. Well, say that like — do you guys do like a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests here, yes.

CALLER: Okay. Would you have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay, so nobody has to know or anything?

CLINIC: No. You can come in and get a free pregnancy test. Are you already two weeks late with your period?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Yeah. So you can come here and get a pregnancy test and people will explain your options to you as far as, you know, if you want to terminate or like have the baby or whatever.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if like my boyfriend brings me, because that’s the only way I’d be able to get there.

CLINIC: Definitely. (laughs) Yeah.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to ask about him or anything?

CLINIC: Oh, no, no. He can come in and sit in the office or whatever. It’s all about you, and we’re into confidentiality.

CALLER: Okay. Because he just doesn’t want to tell anybody about this, so.

CLINIC: That’s — it’s all up to you. It’s all your choices.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All we do is give you information.

CALLER: If like the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. And to get birth control you can ask the person — someone will talk to you no matter what happens with the results. They’ll give you the results, you’ll go to a room, and then they’ll say, you know — you can ask them all the questions. We do annual exams — to get birth control?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Which you probably want to consider anyways or you might want to consider — if you want to do that you can do that through our office. You have to get something called an annual exam which is a pelvic —

CALLER: Well, do my parents have to know anything about birth control?

CLINIC: They have to know nothing about anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Unless you tell them.

CALLER: So nobody will know?

CLINIC: No one will know unless you tell them.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And you can get your pills here too.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or the shot or whatever you choose to do.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my boyfriend says he doesn’t want anybody to know, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, it’s up to you guys. We don’t call. We’re not going to call your parents or anything. We don’t — you know, you won’t go through insurance or anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So everything is just done here, and yeah. So if you have any further questions just go ahead and give us a call.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And you take care of yourself.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: All right. Well, do you know if — like there’s an age requirement for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: I’m sorry. Say that again?

CALLER: Is there like an age requirement to have an abortion?

CLINIC: Yes. Why don’t you give them a call and they could give you all the information?

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, do you know if they have to — like my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. Is that true?

CLINIC: No, it’s not.

CALLER: No? Because like if they found out — well, like my boyfriend’s 22. We’re going to get married and everything, but like they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Why don’t you give the people, the phone number I gave you, and then can help you with all that information. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my boyfriend said to call you guys, so.

CLINIC: Well, we don’t do the abortions here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you do like birth control, or whatever?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And would you guys have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Absolutely not.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would it be all right like if my boyfriend came and everything? Because he’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Well, what is it you need? You need birth control or do you need an abortion?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know if I’m pregnant but do you guys do the pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We do the pregnancy tests.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, did you want to come in today?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you give him a call and call me back?

CALLER: Well, do you guys have like a specific time-frame or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: When is that?

CLINIC: Okay. Let me ask you question. Are you late on your period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: How late are you?

CALLER: Well, like my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: December?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. I can get you in Monday through Friday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So, all right.

CLINIC: So call me back.

CALLER: What time Monday through Friday, like?

CLINIC: Anywhere from 9 to 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Call me and let me know.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to tell anybody about like having a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anybody anything.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Susan. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: For the surgical abortion it’s $370. We do that between 6 and 13 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far you are?

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd

CLINIC: January 3rd? Can you hold for must one moment?

CALLER: Okay.

(short pause)

CLINIC: Sorry to keep you holding. You said January 3rd was your last period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Let me look at my calendar. My math is so terrible; I have to count. You’re probably like five weeks or so, because generally women get pregnant mid cycle. So you probably got pregnant about, you know, somewhere around two weeks after your last period.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just haven’t had my period since then.

CLINIC: Right. I’m looking at the calendar. I would say you’re probably around six weeks or so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Which I could go ahead and schedule you if you wanted to. We do the procedures on Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — Well, my friend said that — Well, I’m going to be 14 on the 20th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anyone?

CLINIC: No. Unfortunately, the only thing — and I don’t even know. You’re 13 now?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: The only thing if you don’t want to tell your parents, you can go to court and get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: Where you have to go explain to the judge why you want to do this and why you don’t want to tell your parents. I don’t even know how to tell you to do that. That’s the only way we can —

CALLER: But he would say it’s okay?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I mean, he might say yes. He might say you’re too young. I’m thinking he may say no.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. Usually like if you’re 16 or 17, you’re getting close to being 18, the judge will go ahead and write you out a paper. I don’t know that with you being so young. Can you hold just a moment? Let me ask my manager what she thinks?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: You still there?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to give you a phone number to call. It’s the juvenile court. And I asked our center manager, and she said that you’re not too young to request a judicial bypass. And what you need to do is just call them and tell them your situation. And tell them that you’re wanting a judicial bypass so that we can see you here in our clinic for the abortion procedure.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s $370.

CALLER: For the judicial bypass?

CLINIC: No, no. I don’t think there’s a cost for that. I thought you meant the cost for the procedure.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: I can give you that phone number – 979-7191.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And call them, and they can give you the information. Just tell them you need to get information how to go about getting a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So I could come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: We don’t do that here. You could go to the Arlington Road — you could go over there, and they could counsel you about all that there.

CALLER: A pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Any medical information — it’s not just regarding abortion. But any medical information is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So by law people are not allowed to discuss you or your medical situation at all.

CALLER: Oh. So well, do you think that maybe I’m not pregnant and I can get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. I would call them, and I would ask them. Talk to them about that, because that’s what they do at that clinic. They do your yearly exams and things. They can get you set up with birth control pills and all of that.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody would have to know that I was on birth control too?

CLINIC: I think you can get around that also.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But u\you would just need to call them and talk to them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thanks a lot.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
