CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We don’t do them here. We do a counseling here, and then we would send you to another place. Would you like the number to Burlington or Barre?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Which one would you like?
CALLER: The one in Burlington.
CLINIC: Burlington? Okay. Let me just find it. Sorry. 863-6326.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So I would come in there to get a pregnancy test.
CLINIC: Yeah. Or you could do it there; it’s up to you.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I would just rather go there. It’s just my friend told me to go to you guys. But do you know — Like I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: That’s something you would discuss with them for this. We are confidential —
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: — and we wouldn’t tell anybody.
CALLER: So if I came in there for a pregnancy test, you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Alright. Well, how much does it cost for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: It would probably be at a contribution level for you. It wouldn’t cost anything most likely. It’s a very low amount of money.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. But we were talking about all this, and we decided we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it all?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Hold on just one second.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Thanks.
(pause)
CLINIC: Sorry about that. Okay. Hello?
CALLER: I’m here.
CLINIC: So did you want to set up an appointment?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he could bring me. But what time do you normally —
CLINIC: We’re here Monday through Friday. We have a walk-in every Wednesday between 1 and 4; otherwise just call and set up an appointment.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could I get birth control today?
CLINIC: Absolutely.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: I can try to get you in today. I don’t know when — are you trying to come in today?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: The only thing I have today is — have you missed your period at all?
CALLER: Well, yeah. I haven’t had it since like December 26th. So that’s the main reason why we’re worried about all this.
CLINIC: And have you taken a home pregnancy test at all?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: So let me see. I can tell you, we have an appointment at 3 open.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So do you want to schedule or give me a call back?
CALLER: I’d have to call you back after I talk to him.
CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you do that?
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: Lisa.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Jennifer.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: We don’t at the Waterbury site, but we do at Planned Parenthood. We do it for example in Barre and in Burlington.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for the Burlington one?
CLINIC: Sure. Burlington is 802-863-6326.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you know — Like I’m just worried cause, well, I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.
CLINIC: That’s not true.
CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?
CLINIC: It’s not true that we have to tell your parents.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you have to tell anyone else besides my parents?
CLINIC: We wouldn’t have to tell anybody.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. It’s just we were talking about all this, and we just don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us.
CLINIC: Yeah. We don’t have to inform your parents, no.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if my boyfriend was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: We accept cash.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Alright. Would it be all right if I came in there to get a pregnancy test just to make sure?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: It’s just that I haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and I’m just really worried.
CLINIC: We don’t happen to have appointments today. Are you calling from the Burlington area?
CALLER: I live in Jonesville.
CLINIC: Jonesville. Where the heck is Jonesville? (laughs)
CALLER: It’s not very far from where you’re at. That’s why I have this number.
CLINIC: Right. I happen to know that — well, of course it’s something that you can get at a drug store. And I also happen to know that Barre does walk-in hours until 5.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But that’s kind of far, so.
CLINIC: Right. I’m just trying to think of your options.
CALLER: Well, what other days do you do pregnancy tests?
CLINIC: We’re open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
CALLER: Okay. So I could come in Monday?
CLINIC: Sure. Let me look at the schedule. Hold on just one sec.
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Hello?
CALLER: Hi.
CLINIC: The first appointment we have is on Wednesday at 3:45.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want to do that?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to tell him.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, do you wanna just call back?
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?
CLINIC: Yeah, you can.
CALLER: Oh, really? But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh. And you’re sure that no one would have to know about me and my boyfriend?
CLINIC: What you tell the practitioner about your boyfriend is up to you.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Should I not tell them then?
CLINIC: (Laughing) I’m just saying that we don’t inform your parents. I’m not really sure what you’re concerned about because we don’t —
CALLER: Well, we just don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. It’s just he doesn’t want us to get in trouble, so.
CLINIC: Right. I do believe that the Vermont law is that — the age of consent, I think, is 17 or 18. So like for example even if someone is 17 and their partner is 18, that’s still reportable as a statutory rape.
CALLER: What do you mean? I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: I was trying to explain to you what I think it is that you’re concerned about. And so it’s totally up to you what you want to talk to the practitioner about.
CALLER: What could happen?
CLINIC: It’s up to you what could happen is what I’m saying.
CALLER: Oh. All right.
CLINIC: If you feel it’s not a consensual relationship then you can talk about that to the doctor.
CALLER: Oh. But we love each other. I mean, we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives. I mean, he’s not doing anything bad.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: All right. Okay. So I could come in there and it would be okay?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Okay. So you had Wednesday open at 3?
CLINIC: At quarter to 4.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Alright. So let me call him.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: What was your name again?
CLINIC: Jennifer. I’m the only one here.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. So thanks.
CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Beth. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: You’re calling our central office in Williston. I can refer you to a closer medical service office. Are you looking for Burlington area?
CALLER: Oh. Well, I live in Eden.
CLINIC: Eden, Vermont?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: You could try Burlington Planned Parenthood, Rutland or Barre. I can give you those phone numbers.
CALLER: Could I get the one in Burlington?
CLINIC: Sure. It’s 863-6326.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want the one in Barre as well?
CALLER: Oh, all right.
CLINIC: You want to just try Burlington?
CALLER: Yeah. Well, could I ask you real quick — I’m just worried cause like my friend told me — Well, I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Well, you should call the Burlington office because they would have the correct medical information. But you do not need parental consent in Vermont for abortion services.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do they do pregnancy tests there too though?
CLINIC: Mm-hmm. Yep.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah, so you should give them a call directly.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do they also do like birth control?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through all this again. But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?
CLINIC: No. Parental consent is not required for that.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. But he said that he would pay for everything. Would they have to have him sign anything if he was paying?
CLINIC: No. But you should call them directly.
