CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Chris.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — Well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: For a local abortion with local anesthetic it’s $370, and general is $515. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Then it’s $420 for general.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just kind of worried because my friend told me that like you would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. We shouldn’t have to. It all depends. Are you going to have a surgical?

CALLER: I don’t know. What is that?

CLINIC: The surgical abortion is when you come in — that’s when we do the abortion here. Or there’s a medical abortion which you do at home, and then your parents do have to know about it.

CALLER: Oh. So what’s the difference?

CLINIC: Medical abortion is when you come in, you take a pill. And then you take another one. And then on Saturday or two days later you insert a pill that looks like Monistat into your vagina, and it makes you miscarry at home.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: May I ask your last name, Lisa?

CALLER: It’s Carter.

CLINIC: Okay. Do your parents know about your boyfriend and you?

CALLER: Yeah, they know we’re going out. I mean, he works with my dad. But they just don’t know we’re having sex. If they found out we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do. So they just can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: The main reason why I’m worried about all this is cause, well, I haven’t had my period since like December 26thth, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me get my pregnancy calculator out, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You said December 26th. When was the first day of your last menstrual period?

CALLER: The day after Christmas.

CLINIC: That was the first day?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: So you’re nine weeks, two days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Well, that’s the first step. We need you to take a pregnancy test. You can come in today if you want and take one. We have walk-in hours until 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. Like if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You can.

CALLER: Oh. But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Alright. Well, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we decided that we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. But like he said he was going to pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: He would. And we would have to take his I.D. if he walked in the door, if you do decide to come in and you are pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would you have to tell anybody about both of this?

CLINIC: No. Your health care is absolutely confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So nobody would find out about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. So what time do you guys do the pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We have them until 3:45 today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And I don’t have to have an appointment for that? I just come in?

CLINIC: Nope. You just walk in and tell them you’re here for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how long does it normally take to do that?

CLINIC: Well, when you come in we ask you to leave the urine sample. And then we do see our walk-ins in between our regular-scheduled patients, so sometimes there’s a wait.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. So if I found out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today?

CLINIC: We may need to make you an appointment, but we could get you in on Monday for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just I don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: No, I understand.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Are you using any kind of birth control now? Are you using condoms?

CALLER: No. That’s why we were wanting to get birth control because me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about this again.

CLINIC: Right. Okay. But yeah, we could definitely get you in today for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: So just come between now and 3:45.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Women’s Health Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We actually don’t provide surgical abortions here. We do that at the Planned Parenthood in Burlington, and they take care of all the scheduling there.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is this a Planned Parenthood center though?

CLINIC: We are an affiliate.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. The reason why I’m calling is because my friend told me to call you guys. Do you guys do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: We do that, yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just that I’m just kind of scared of all this because like, well, I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Have you done a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, it sounds like you should do that before you jump to any conclusions about getting an abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just the thing is I’m going to be 14 at the end of the month, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, we would not need to tell your parents regardless.

CALLER: Is there anyone else?

CLINIC: Well, if you are 14 and you have a partner who’s 22, that might be something that we need to talk about.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: That is something that might possibly, depending on the situation, be reportable to the state.

CALLER: To the state?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: I don’t know the answer to that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would I get in trouble?

CLINIC: I don’t believe so.

CALLER: Would my boyfriend get in trouble?

CLINIC: I don’t know the answer to that. You’d have to discuss that with a provider.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. It’s just the thing is, if I come in there for a pregnancy test, would you have to say anything?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: If I came in there for a pregnancy test, would you have to say anything about anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know the answer to that. If you wanted a pregnancy test, Planned Parenthood has walk-in hours this afternoon —

CALLER: Where?

CLINIC: — from 1 to 7. At Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh. The one in Burlington?

CLINIC: Yep. And I think if you are a teenage, I think the pregnancy tests are —

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: — free. I don’t know the answer to that. You’d have to talk to them.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there for birth control?

CLINIC: Yep. You would need to have an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. It’s just I’m just really confused about all this. If I thought of any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Amanda. I’m not often here, so I wouldn’t ask for me.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: And usually anyone who answers the phone can help you.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So I would start off there before you jump to any conclusions about needing an abortion. You should go get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Good luck.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you wanted to go through Planned Parenthood, they’re done at the Burlington and Barre clinics.

CALLER: Well, do you have a the number for those?

CLINIC: Absolutely. Both of them? Or did you want one in particular?

CALLER: Just the one in Burlington, I guess.

CLINIC: 863-6326.

CALLER: All right. Well, do you know like if they have to — It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No. Nobody has to know.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: He doesn’t need to sign anything. It’s totally up to you.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: It’s just I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like January 3rd, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. So let me put you on hold for just a moment, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Then I can find an appointment for you. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant if you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We do do birth control here, yes.

CALLER: Oh. But would you have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was there about anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So if he was paying for everything would he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: He doesn’t have to sign anything, and there’s — you know, definitely some issues there with how much difference there is your ages.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: There’s quite a difference in your ages.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what do you mean? Like is that bad?

CLINIC: It can be. Sure. I mean, we’d, you know, certainly — it’s preferable that there not be such an age gap.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what does that mean? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, there’s different laws concerning minors and, and legally how old the person is that they can be.

CALLER: Okay. I don’t understand what you mean. What do you mean?

CLINIC: It’s actually really hard to explain but basically legally you know, the law states that for someone to go out with someone that is a minor under a certain age, there can’t be a certain number of years between the two of them.

CALLER: Well, could something happen?

CLINIC: You know, I don’t actually know.

CALLER: Oh. Well, are you going to have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: If you let us know, yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if he was there — Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: You just need to really be aware and you need to be aware of what information you’re giving out.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would it be bad if he was there with me? Because he was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: No, not if — I mean, we can’t guess someone’s age by the way they look.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But that also too, those laws are there for a reason, so you need to be aware of that, and you really need to think about it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I come in for a —

CLINIC: (unclear) really valid.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if I come in for a pregnancy test, what time do you normally do those?

CLINIC: Let’s see what we have available. On Wednesday is the walk-in clinic is between 2 and 5, and that’s only on a Wednesday. So let me tell you what we have available today if you wanted to come in today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I have any time between 2:50 and 3:30 available. I have a 4:10 or a 4:20, and those would be the only appointments available today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see. Can I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Pamela. I’m the only one answering the phone.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Sure. Bye bye.
