CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Lisa. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not this clinic, ma’am, but the one on Babcock. You want the number over there?
CALLER: Yes, please.
CLINIC: Okay, it isn’t Planned Parenthood, however. It’s 736-3262.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m going to be 14 in March and my friend — I’m just worried because like my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: You would have to ask them because they’re the ones that take care of it.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: Yeah, the pregnancy test, the urine is $10 and the blood is $25.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was getting a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Um-um.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that, like we were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything. Would it be all right if he was there with me?
CLINIC: Can you hold on for one second?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, ma’am? Okay, pay for what, ma’am?
CALLER: The pregnancy test and everything.
CLINIC: Oh, that’s fine.
CALLER: Really? Well, would you guys have to talk to him or ask him any questions? He just — We just don’t want anyone to know about us, so.
CLINIC: Um-um.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Um-um. You just get the $10 and you can come in for the pregnancy test.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control too?
CLINIC: You could. However, you would need an appointment for that.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But would you have to tell my parents I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No. Um-um. It’s confidential.
CALLER: Oh, okay. So, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you know — Like how much does it cost for a birth control actually?
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: It would just be a donation because there wouldn’t be any charges for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I was on birth control, would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills? Because I can’t drive. He’d be the only way that I could get them.
CLINIC: Yeah, as long as you were to put him down.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: All right.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Veronica. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: You do?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: They’re $290.
CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you — like I’m just worried because like my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. If you don’t want to tell your parents, you would have to go through court.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And get permission from a judge to have it done.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how do I do that? Like do I need like a lawyer or anything?
CLINIC: No. You would come in here. We have to give you a pregnancy test first to confirm it with us, and then we would give you paperwork that you could take a judge and have him sign it, and then you can come back and have it done.
CALLER: Oh. Well, does he ever say no?
CLINIC: No. Not that I know of.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, what time could I come in for a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: You can walk in. We’re open until 7:00.
CALLER: Today?
CLINIC: Yeah, and it’s $10 for urine test and $25 for a blood draw.
CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about this and he said that he was going to pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you have to have him sign anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: It’s just your information and everything’s confidential.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody about birth control?
CLINIC: No, ma’am. Everything’s confidential here. Nobody will find out anything about any of our patients.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. I’m just worried because like my parents can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if they found out, so.
CLINIC: Okay. Once you start birth control you need to be on your menstrual cycle, and it’s $35 for office visit and $16 for a pack of pills.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would it be all right — Like say that I wasn’t pregnant. Would it be all right if he picked up the birth control? Because I don’t have a car. I can’t drive.
CLINIC: You would have to come in for the initial like patient education of the pills, and then you could put him on your list to pick them up and he can get them for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. And what was your name again?
CLINIC: Veronica.
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Lydia. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: We do them at the one on Babcock. I could give you the number to there.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: 736-2262.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just worried because like, well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No. Um-um. You’re 13?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And how old is your boyfriend?
CALLER: He’s 22.
CLINIC: 22. No, it doesn’t matter. They will have to — You have to go over there to the clinic. You have to go the clinic and they have to do like your paperwork and stuff, and you have to go to court. You have to go to court, and you have to get some papers from court saying that you want to have an abortion and that you don’t want your parents to find out.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does it cost to go to court?
CLINIC: That doesn’t cost you a thing.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Um-hum. Now, when you go to that location on Babcock, they’re going to give you more information about it. There’s this lady there who’s in charge of that, her name is Rachel. She’ll be the one be able to tell you more information how about you do, what is it that you do. Even though your boyfriend’s — Did you say 22?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. He can’t sign for you. It has to be your parents.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And does your mom know that you’re with him?
CALLER: Well, she knows we’re going out, but she doesn’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: Yeah. So the best thing for you to do is just call them and make an appointment. Because before you go to court, the court people will have to make sure that you already went to Planned Parenthood and you already got all your papers ready. The best thing for you to do, call them and make an appointment so you could go.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Where?
CALLER: Where you’re at?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Like my boyfriend said to go to you guys. It’s just, I’m just really scared because I haven’t had a period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Yeah, you could come in and get a pregnancy test if you want. And then, from there, we could just get you an appointment here to make your paperwork, but you have to go over there for the abortion itself.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was getting a pregnancy test there?
CLINIC: No. Um-um.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: The best thing for you to do — That way you could get everything done over there — They’ll probably just be better for you to go over there. That way you could talk to Rachel and she’ll give you the papers so you could go to court.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, like if I — When I get a pregnancy test if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?
CLINIC: Yeah. Um-hum.
CALLER: Well, would anybody have to say anything about me being on birth control?
CLINIC: No. Nobody’s going to say anything.
CALLER: Well, do you know — Like if my boyfriend can come with me if they would have to say anything? He was going to pay for everything, so —
CLINIC: Oh, don’t worry about that. Only about the abortion, yeah, you do have to get those court papers.
CALLER: Okay. But they wouldn’t have to say anything about my boyfriend?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: It’s just we don’t want anyone to know about us, so.
CLINIC: No, that’s fine.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you hold on?
CALLER: Yeah.
(pause)
CLINIC: Ma’am?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay. It would either be, you know, you would need to get your parents’ permission, or you would need to go to court and speak to a judge in what is called judicial bypass.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do I need like a lawyer for that?
CLINIC: You would need to go to the court and see what you would need to — you know, what are the requirements and everything.
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: That’s what you would need to go to the court and find out.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know if the judge ever says no?
CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying, you need to go to the court and find out.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right to come in there for like a pregnancy test? It’s just I’m really worried because my — The main reason why I’m worried is because I haven’t had my period since I was, since like December 21st, so.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: You can, but we do charge for a pregnancy test. It’s $10 for the urine test or $25 for the blood test.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It would probably just be yourself coming in.
CALLER: Oh. So my boyfriend can’t come in?
CLINIC: Yeah, he can wait in the waiting area, but we would need to speak to you first.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?
CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Okay. So you’re 13 right now or 12?
CALLER: I’m 13.
CLINIC: Okay. We’re going to have to report that.
CALLER: What do you mean? Who would you have to report it to?
CLINIC: Anybody that is under 14, we have to report it.
CALLER: Oh. Well, what would happen? What am I supposed to do? I mean, would they tell my parents? I mean, my parents can’t find out at all. I don’t know what they would do if they found out.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. It would be reported to the police.
CALLER: Well, why?
CLINIC: Because you’re under 14.
CALLER: Oh. Well, well, but — what, would I go to jail?
CLINIC: I don’t know. Just a minute. Okay?
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Hello? This is Esther.
CALLER: Hi.
CLINIC: Okay. You wanted to know why we had to report it?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, because you’re a minor. According to the law, you’re a minor. And if you were to come in here with your boyfriend, we’d have to call the police.
CALLER: Well, what would happen? What should I do?
CLINIC: Well, what do you need to come in for, ma’am?
CALLER: Well, I mean, I don’t know if I was pregnant or not. I was wanting to come in and get a pregnancy test. I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st.
CLINIC: I see.
CALLER: I just don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Well, you know, all I — You know, I can’t tell you want to do. I mean, you could buy a pregnancy test over the counter, but —
CALLER: Are those usually right?
CLINIC: Oh, yeah, they’re accurate. But what are you going to do after that? Have you talked to your mother about this?
CALLER: No. She can’t find out at all. I mean, if she found out, I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: Well, you know, if you came in here, we would have to report it like I said, and your boyfriend would probably get arrested.
CALLER: Well, why would he get arrested? I mean —
CLINIC: It’s statutory rape according to the law.
CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He’s going to take care of me forever.
CLINIC: Yeah. Well, you know, but that’s the law, ma’am. We don’t make the laws but we have to abide by them.
CALLER: Well, so there’s just nothing I can do?
CLINIC: I don’t know how to advise you, dear.
CALLER: Oh. Well, what if I took like the home pregnancy test and it said that I wasn’t pregnant. Could I come in and get birth control?
CLINIC: We would still have to report it because of your age.
CALLER: Oh. Well, even if like I’m going to be 14 in March. Would that make any difference?
CLINIC: That might make some difference. I think it’s 13 and under.
CALLER: Oh. So like I could come in for a birth control after I’m 14?
CLINIC: You could probably, uh-huh.
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody then?
CLINIC: I don’t think so.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: But meanwhile, if your test is negative, you know, you could have your boyfriend use condoms.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: All right.
CALLER: Well, what was your name again?
CLINIC: Esther.
