CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: When was your first day of your last period?

CALLER: December 21st.

CLINIC: It will be $375 up to 13 weeks, and then from 13 to 15 it’s $525.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March, that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We still have to notify your parents.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to have to tell them? Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: You can do a judicial bypass. But most of the time they’re not granted.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You’ll have to get an attorney and you can do it that way.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: That I’m not too sure how expensive that is.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there and get a — Would you guys do a pregnancy test to see if I was pregnant though?

CLINIC: Yeah. We can do that.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I’m really scared and I don’t know what to do, so.

CLINIC: Right. I understand, but those are your — I mean —

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: No, we can do that without telling nobody.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right like if my boyfriend was there with me? Because that would be the only way that I could get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to — We were just talking about all this, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would you have to ask him anything?

CLINIC: Ask him anything?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really? But if he’s paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Oh, okay. If it ended up that like I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just the only thing is, like I can’t drive because I’m not old enough. But like could my boyfriend come and pick up like the birth control pills?

CLINIC: I’m sorry. Say that again.

CALLER: Since I can’t drive, would it be all right if my boyfriend picked up like birth control pills?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: The first two sets you’re going to have to pick up, because we’ll have to check your weight and blood pressure to make sure it’s okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But after that would it be all right?

CLINIC: It will be all right if he’s on your emergency contact list.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. What was your name again?

CLINIC: My name’s Melody.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this clinic, but our Midland Planned Parenthood does.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know if — Do you know that number?

CLINIC: I sure do. It is 570-5184.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me — Well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could they just have him sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. And it is parental consent. I mean, not parental consent. It’s just parental notification. But they do have to notify a legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents? Because, well, it’s just they can’t find out at all. I mean, if they — It’s just, they hate my boyfriend because — I mean, he’s a great guy. They just hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, you can go through something called the Judicial Bypass and go before a judge, and you know, and try to — you know, if you explain your case and they think, okay, there’s a good reason for her parents not to know, then it can happen that way. We’ve got some information here on that if you want to come in and pick it up and go that way.

CALLER: Well, do they ever say no?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: They do. Yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what would I do if they said no?

CLINIC: Then they’d have to notify your parents.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, go ahead and come in and take a pregnancy test. You can come in this afternoon from like 1 to 4, and then we’ll do a pregnancy test and we can give you some information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like the only way I’d be able to get there is if my boyfriend is there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we were talking about all this, and we didn’t want anyone to know about us. But would you have to ask him any questions or anything?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: All right. Well, if I came in for a pregnancy test, would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — Like if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control?

CLINIC: We could do a physical. We wouldn’t be able to do one today, but we could set you up an appointment for a physical, and we could get you started on birth control.

CALLER: Well, how soon could you like do that?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t have our schedule yet for March. But it would be sometime in March, probably within the next week or two.

CALLER: All right. Well, if I was on birth control would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Right. I understand.

CALLER: But do you know — Like since I can’t drive yet, would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: No. It would have to be you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, let me talk to my boyfriend real quick. Can I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: Tanya.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. This is Gloria. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: We have a pamphlet that gives you the name and numbers of places that do, and you’d have to call and find out on that. But we don’t do them here. I’m sorry.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in and get the pamphlet though?

CLINIC: Um-hum. Have you already got your positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just really worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. You’d have to come in first and get that pregnancy test. And as soon as we get that pregnancy test we can give you that stuff. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just worried because like, well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents that I’m there. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Um-um.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. You’re 13 years old.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, no. You’d have to — I mean, and this is one thing. I don’t know. It’s just the law that they have. Anybody who comes in under the age of 14, we have to report it – no matter what.

CALLER: Who do you have to report it to?

CLINIC: That I’d have to speak to my nurse practitioner for sure, but I think it’s someone in Lubbock.

CALLER: Lubbock?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know. That’s a totally different thing from us.

CALLER: But even if I came in there just for a pamphlet would you have to call them?

CLINIC: No. Not if you just came in for a pamphlet. I mean, I won’t know who you are. I won’t know — you know, your age or anything like that. But if we do a pregnancy test on you and it comes out positive, we’ve got to.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if it was negative?

CLINIC: If it was negative we wouldn’t have to worry about it. But if you’re really worried about getting pregnant, you need to get on birth control.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell my parents I’m on birth control?

CLINIC: No. No, we wouldn’t have to tell your parents you’re on birth control. Now, let me tell you that the law that, the same law I’m telling you about right now, the only thing is if you ever have like a positive test as far as like, let’s see, STD test that comes out positive or something, we have to tell them on that. We have to tell, not your parents, but we have to tell the law on that. So I mean —

CALLER: Oh. Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: I don’t know. We’ve never had to do it, so I don’t know. I couldn’t honestly tell you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But, yeah, if you’re going to want to do that though you need to come in. Because if you need to get on birth control, you need to do that soon. Because, I mean, if it comes out negative, you need to get on something because you’re really young. And you won’t — I’m going to show you right now, it will be hard for you to, you know, have a baby, especially at your age.

CALLER: Well, do you know like — It’s just the thing is, I can’t drive or anything. But my boyfriend — Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. You’d have to come in and pick those up. Now, you can come in, like have someone maybe a friend or something drop you off. And you can come in, just swing by and pick them up. Like I said, you have to get your exam before we can do anything as far as like birth control. Okay? So if you’re going to want to do that, you do, like I said, need to come in soon and do that. Because the sooner that you get it done, the less you have to worry about it.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything if I came in?

CLINIC: See, I don’t know. That’s something I’d have to ask the nurse practitioner to make sure. But as far as them being that age and you being under the age of 14, I don’t know. I don’t know.

CALLER: Well, would it better if I didn’t say anything?

CLINIC: Well, see I don’t know why not. I don’t — I’m trying to tell you I honestly I don’t know. But as far as that, I mean, you can come in and do whatever you got to do. And I don’t know what happens in the exam room. I’ve only been in there like for translating, and I don’t stay in for the exam, so I don’t know what all gets asked.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I was pregnant would you guys have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No. You would tell your parents. But this is what I’m saying though. With you being under the age of 14, it’s the law that we would have to report it to the law. And I don’t know what they do from there.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right. Well, just either come by here or —

CALLER: Well, is there any way of getting around not having to tell my parents?

CLINIC: I mean, here we don’t tell your parents, okay? I’ll tell you right now. We don’t talk to parents at all. But, you know, if they were to come out positive, or whatever, and you know the law does their own thing. I don’t know what they do from here. We don’t tell your parents. I know that for sure because our confidentiality. But I don’t know what the law enforcements do, so. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty then. So just give me a call back or come back, come in here and we can do that. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. What was your name again?

CLINIC: It’s Gloria.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: We have a booklet that has a list of little bit of places that you can call to, but you need to come in and get it in here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know like — I’m just really worried about all this because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: So you’re 13. Far as you doing anything right now, the abortion, you need to let your parents know.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No, because the patient would be you.

CALLER: Oh. So they would have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to tell my parents? Because if they found out I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Um-um.

CALLER: I mean, they would be furious.

CLINIC: You would need to probably call to other places that does that. And you can ask them, see maybe if they go by confidentiality or what.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Even if you do come in for a pregnancy test, do we need to let your parents know. It would be best if you just call there, where they do that. Come and get a booklet where different places you can call to and probably see what they do.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And when is your birthday?

CALLER: March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Yeah. Call there. See what — Come and get by and get a booklet and you can call there, see what they tell you. But as far as coming here, they will let your parents know.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: It would be better after your birthday.

CALLER: Oh, so like after I’m 14 I could get birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because 13 we do. 14 we don’t.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if like after I’m 14 and I came in for a birth control, would my boyfriend be able to pick it up? Because I still wouldn’t be able to drive to come get them.

CLINIC: He can come with you, but you need to be here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we don’t. I can give you a number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: 428-6242.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if — Like I’m just really worried because like, well, I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. You can call and ask them.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Okay. You can come on Wednesday. We’re closed already.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I’m just really worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so I don’t know what to do and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Right. Well, do you want to try calling them? I think they do — What is your name, ma’am?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Christine Smith. Can you come in — Do you want to come in on Wednesday morning?

CALLER: Well, what time?

CLINIC: At 8:00.

CALLER: Yeah, I guess. I don’t know. I would have to call my boyfriend to see, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in then if you want to. If it’s positive, you wanted to have an abortion?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, maybe you can call that office and see if they can see you tomorrow and make other arrangements, if you want it done right away.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just —

CLINIC: If not, we can see you here Wednesday morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were just talking about this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us but —

CLINIC: Everything is confidential here, ma’am.

CALLER: All right. So you guys wouldn’t have to ask anything about him or anything?

CLINIC: Anything about him?

CALLER: Right. Like we just don’t want anyone to know about us, but he was going to pay for everything. So does he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think that he would. I don’t know if the age problem would be a problem, ma’am.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: He’s more than three years older than you.

CALLER: Yeah? Well, is that bad?

CLINIC: Well, I think by law it’s like statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Statutory rape does not mean that you were forced. It just means that you’re having sex with a minor —

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: — without parental consent. I don’t know the law very well, so I don’t know what could happen there. But I know that these people would be able to give you more information on that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what should I do then? Just — I mean, I don’t know what to do. I’m scared.

CLINIC: Right. Do you want to have a baby?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: (sighs) Well, I know you would need parental consent to get an abortion. Your boyfriend would not be good enough. You need —

CALLER: Oh, but I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Then, legally, I don’t think they’ll do an abortion, ma’am. Like I’m telling you, they would be able to give you more information. They are the ones that perform it.

CALLER: Oh. But if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. We can help you. You don’t need parental consent for that.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: But if you’re not pregnant, ma’am, you need to make sure you go get on some condoms or something to be using.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Just because you’re not pregnant right now doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would it be all right — Like I can’t drive yet. But would it be all right if my boyfriend picked up like the birth control though?

CLINIC: The birth control pills? No. You have to come in for an exam.

CALLER: Oh. Well, after that? Could he pick up like the pills or whatever?

CLINIC: I’m sure when you come in we can make some kind of arrangements.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, ma’am.

CALLER: You’ve been so helpful. Thanks. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Eliza. If you want to, ma’am, you can come here Wednesday morning.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And we can go ahead and take care of the pregnancy test, or like I said you can call that number. I know an abortion’s going to cost you a pretty penny. And —

CALLER: Okay. How much?

CLINIC: I’m thinking about $350 and up.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You can call that number. They know more about all the legal procedures.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I think there might be a way for you to go around telling your parents but you would have to go through a judge.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: So — Yes.

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think you do.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Like I said, they would be able to give you more information on that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But feel free to come on by or send him to get some condoms for you on Wednesday, if you don’t come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So could he just come in and get —

CLINIC: Yeah, he can come in. It’s going to cost him $2 a dozen.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CLINIC: Thanks for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Valerie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this location. The only location with Planned Parenthood would be downtown on Sunnan (sp) Street.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yes. 713-535-2400. Now when you’re going to dial this number you’re going to have options, okay? One of which will be abortion, okay? But be patient because it may take a little while before you get someone on the phone.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Don’t hang up on them. They will get on the phone, and they will give you financial and medical information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just worried because I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22 —

CLINIC: (unclear)

CALLER: — could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: No. Let me explain to you. If you are 17 and under, okay, the Texas law requests now, it’s been going on for over a year, that one of your parents is informed. It doesn’t mean that they have to agree with it, but one of them will have to sign a document stating that they have been informed of your pregnancy and your wish to terminate.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Okay. Now when you’re going to go to downtown for the first counseling, they’re going to give you options. If there’s no way that you can tell your parents, you can go in front of a judge.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes. And the judge would basically discuss it with you and tell you whether he believes that you’re mature enough to make your own decision.

CALLER: Oh. Well, does he ever say no?

CLINIC: Well, he — yes, it has happened. That’s one thing that you need to discuss with them downtown. That’s all they do, so they will be able to help you out with doing that if you want to.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So give them a call. Be patient on the phone. You will get someone on line to give you all the information, give you an appointment as soon as possible.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: With us?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah, if you want, but —

CALLER: I’m just really worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so I’m scared.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Do you have any symptoms of pregnancy?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do you have any other symptoms like full breasts, fatigue, dizziness?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Well, if you want come on in for a pregnancy test, and then if it’s positive we’ll give you the information to go downtown.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it came out that it wasn’t positive —

CLINIC: Then you can see the nurse and she will start you on birth control to regulate, for you to have your period.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Absolutely — no, not for that.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No, it’s completely anonymous.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: No. No. We need your information, but we won’t contact you. We won’t write you. Everything is confidential. And for you it will be no more than $20.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I give you like my boyfriend’s cell number though?

CLINIC: Yes, we can. But one thing that we will need is your address. We will not write to you, but we have to have that information.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I give you like my boyfriend’s address though?

CLINIC: Yes, you can, if we have to contact you, but we still going to need your information. We’re not going to use them, but that’s the law, we have to have them.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But we will not write to you, and if we had to contact you, we have no problem contacting your boyfriend. We do that all the time with teenagers.

CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to say anything? Like do you have to know about him or anything?

CLINIC: No. The only thing is if your tests come back, your pregnancy test comes back negative and you want to start on birth control then we’re going to do a Pap smear and breast exam and we’re going to check for STDs. And usually when the results come back, if the results are negative we don’t contact you. That means that it’s good news. But if the results are, if there’s one result that is positive and you need medication, then we would need a phone number so we could call your boyfriend, and he would tell you to come in to pick up medication. That’s the way we usually do it.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And if you want to do that — Do you want to schedule an appointment for that?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. What is your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: And phone number where I can get hold of you, or your boyfriend’s number if you want, or a cell phone.

CALLER: Well, I need to get that number. He just got it, and I don’t know the number yet, so.

CLINIC: Okay, that’s fine. Okay. Okay. Let me check. So it’s going to be no more than $20. Do you want to come in today?

CALLER: What time today?

CLINIC: Because we only do the pregnancy test — If it’s positive we’re not going to do anything else. Let me check. Hold on one second. Bear with me.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t tell anybody if it was a positive test, right?

CLINIC: No. No. It’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? No one — We won’t tell anyone. Even if your boyfriend calls and said, you know, is my girlfriend done, all ready to go? I won’t, we won’t be able to say anything. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Now, could you come in at 3:00?

CALLER: I’d have to call to see, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I’ll schedule you for 3:00 and give us a call back if you can’t make it. Otherwise we’ll see you at 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, Christine?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
