CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Leslie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we don’t provide that service at this particular clinic, but we do at our Bryan Clinic and our Fannin Clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the numbers for those?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. The number to — Which one do you want first?

CALLER: The Bryan one.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 979-846-1744.

CALLER: All right. Well, do you know like if — I’m just worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re going to have to talk to them about that. I’m not sure of their exact procedure.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Can you hold for one second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. I can’t get you in today. I won’t be able to get you in until Wednesday.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you have to tell my parents that I was there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s completely confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But —

CLINIC: But they are $25.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for it. Is that all right if he’s here with me and takes care of everything?

CLINIC: Oh. Yes, that’s fine. We just can’t get you in until Wednesday.

CALLER: Okay. But would he have to sign for anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about everything, and we decided that we didn’t want anybody to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Okay. No, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. So nobody would have to know until like I had an abortion or anything?

CLINIC: Right. I mean, you sign the consent yourself.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if the pregnancy test was —Llike if it said that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, would it be all right like if my boyfriend was there with me for that too?

CLINIC: If you want him to be there, that’s fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. We don’t have to share that with anybody.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried, that my parents just can’t find out at all. Like if they knew that we were having sex I don’t know what they would do. So I’m just really worried about it. But —

CLINIC: Well, if you call the Bryan clinic they can give you more information on the ABs than we can.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: If you’re a student it’s $15, but for you it would just — If you’re 14 then there’s no charge.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Irving Planned Parenthood. This is Christine. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this clinic. I can give you the number. There’s one in Dallas and one in Ft. Worth that does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Which one did you want?

CALLER: The one in Dallas.

CLINIC: It’s 214-373-1868.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — I’m just worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, no, they would have to know.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Your parents would have to know. Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them, because I can’t tell them at all. I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: No, because it’s a state regulation that anyone 18 or younger that wants to get the procedure done — I mean, that’s just state law.

CALLER: Really? There’s no way not to tell them at all?

CLINIC: There’s no way of getting around that.

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since December 21st.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. It’s $15 for students.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah, but he can’t come back when we do the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But it’s okay if he brings me and it’s —

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I just don’t want anybody to know about us. So would you guys be asking a lot of questions about him or anything?

CLINIC: About what?

CALLER: That he’s my boyfriend and —

CLINIC: Oh, no. All we do when you come in, we’ll have you sign in, you fill out the information for the pregnancy test, and we’ll bring you back and run the test. That’s all.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would you guys have to tell my parents that I’m there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Not for that, no.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell my parents I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. If you come in and the test is negative, we will have to do an annual examination before we can put you on birth control.

CALLER: How long does that take?

CLINIC: That’s going to take about 30 minutes to an hour.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And the exam is $40.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. And then the birth control pills, if you wanted to get on birth control pills, are $12 a month for a student. You have to have your student ID or like grades or something like that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if I don’t have like an ID? I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: Then bring grades or something.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you wanted to get on the injection, the injection is $58 every three months for a student.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well —

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test you can come in any time, but if you want to get — If it’s negative, then we’ll have to schedule you an appointment to come in probably at a different day.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Terry. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we sure don’t. The closest is Corpus, and then we have a Planned Parenthood in San Antonio that does.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have that number, the one for Corpus?

CLINIC: Corpus is a private physician. His number is 888-7972.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — Like I’m just really worried and I don’t know. But like my friend told me — Like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. There is a law in Texas that the parents have to be notified. They don’t have to have consent, but they do have to be notified.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: There is a way to get around that. It’s called a judicial bypass, where you have to go before a judge and prove that you’re making a sound decision. And if the doctor in Corpus will not help you with that, you can go to the San Antonio Planned Parenthood. We have someone there that will take you through the process to help you get it done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do I need like a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: No. They’ll help you with all the paperwork and everything and, like I say, it goes before the judge and he makes the decision.

CALLER: Well, what if the judge says no?

CLINIC: Well, and it’s possible that he would, but generally he doesn’t.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah, and it may be different judges that make the decision. But as a general rule, if you go through the process and everything, you can prove that you’re making a decision not, you know, it’s not a quick decision — that you’ve thought about it, you know your options, that kind of stuff. That’s what they want to see.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You can. It’s $10. Well, you’re 14? It’s $5.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just —

CLINIC: Now, I will tell you that there is a law in the state of Texas. Now, see you’re 14 already, right?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s a law in the state of Texas that says if you are under the age of 14, or even under the age of 16 or 17, if your boyfriend is more than 3 years older, than you we have to report it to the police.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: It’s the law.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: They usually come and make a report, and — But we cannot control from there whether they call your parents, or notify them, or anything like that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So — and I don’t know that they do. It’s usually just a report to prove that you weren’t being taken advantage of, that kind of stuff.

CALLER: Well, no. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Yeah. But that’s — I mean, it’s the law. And so, just so you know.

CALLER: So if I came in there for a pregnancy test you’d have to report me?

CLINIC: Yep. Sure would.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. If you tell us your boyfriend’s that much older than you, then we have to report it.

CALLER: Well, should I just not say anything?

CLINIC: I can’t tell you that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? (laughs)

CALLER: All right. Well, it’s — Would it be better just to get like a home pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can do that.

CALLER: Are they usually right though?

CLINIC: If you get a quality one, like EPT or something like that. Don’t buy a cheap one.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there for birth control?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, would you have to report me if I was there for that?

CLINIC: If we know that your boyfriend’s that much older than you, yes. If you’re just a 14-year-old coming in for birth control, we can do that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. The only thing would be if, you know, if you’re being abused or anything. But no.

CALLER: But, but I won’t be 14 until like next month, so.

CLINIC: That’s okay. Now, I will tell you, if you come back pregnant or if you come back with a sexually transmitted diseases — those are two other situations in which we have to report it. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Teresa. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No. Aaron’s (sp) Women’s Clinic.

CALLER: Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: I don’t know. Hold on one moment.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. It’s in the phone book. I’m not sure of the number.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know if — I’m just really worried because like, well, my friend told me — Like I’m going to be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. If you’re under 13, I mean under 14, it needs to be reported.

CALLER: Reported to who?

CLINIC: To the state.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: He’ll get investigated for child abuse.

CALLER: Well, but he’s not abusing me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I understand that, but that’s just the law.

CALLER: Well, what should I do? I mean, I don’t want him to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Umm. That’s — I don’t know. Maybe you could just not tell them who. I don’t know. I don’t know what you could do. I mean, that’s the law.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know, nothing I could tell you to do really.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m really worried about all this because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared. So I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, you need to make an appointment there, and then let — You know, they could tell you from there what you need to do because I’m not real familiar with that situation, since we don’t do that here.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test? It’s just, my friend told me to go to you guys because it was better.

CLINIC: Yeah, you could come here. They’re 8 if they’re negative and 30 if they’re positive, because then they do an exam to see how far along you are.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know like if you would have to tell my parents if I was there for that though?

CLINIC: Hold on. Yeah, we have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would it be better — Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents at all?

CLINIC: I don’t know. Here, we would — I don’t know what other agencies do, but here we would have to. You might want to try the Storks Nest. They do free pregnancy testing there.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What was that again?

CLINIC: The Storks Nest.

CALLER: Where is that?

CLINIC: That’s at Highland.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But if I came in for a pregnancy test, you would have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, what if I wasn’t pregnant? Could I get birth control and you wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: You’d have to make an appointment here and get a pap smear done to become a patient here.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, I’m just really worried. I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: I understand. Well, go over there first and see if you are pregnant. And if you’re not, then call back and make an appointment here.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: This is Dianna. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t here. I can give you the number, toll-free number to our Houston clinic.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you want that?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-831-6538.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: No. Your boyfriend can’t. They’ll go over it. No, he can’t, sweetie. It would have to be a legal guardian. It’s a Texas state law now. But when you call them, they can explain. There ways around that, and they’ll go over all that with you on the phone.

CALLER: What kind of ways?

CLINIC: I’ll let them explain it to you, because they’re more familiar with it than I am. I mean, there’s — it’s a judicial bypass that you can get. But I don’t really know how to explain it to you because we don’t deal with it here. But your boyfriend will not be allowed to sign for you. He’s not your legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know, if you were married, it would be different. But be sure — When you call, be sure and tell them because — Yeah, like I said, you could do a judicial bypass. And they do all that there. They are real familiar with it. So when you call, ask them, and they’ll give you all that information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah. Have you not confirmed the pregnancy?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You need to do that first.

CALLER: I’m just really worried, because like I haven’t had my period for awhile.

CLINIC: Well, yeah, you need to come in and confirm the pregnancy, to see if you’re even pregnant, because you might not be pregnant. Have you been here before?

CALLER: Huh? No.

CLINIC: Have you been here before? Okay. Did you want to come in today and just do the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call? We’re open until 4:30. So even if you can get here like about 4:00 or 4:15, we can do the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody about the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. No, baby. We don’t tell anybody. That’s up to you. Everything is confidential when you come in.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: I mean, I know with the abortion it’s different. But as far as coming here, whether you’re coming for a pregnancy test, birth control, whatever you’re coming for, everything is confidential. We can give no information to anybody but you without your permission.

CALLER: Oh. So I could be on birth control if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Certainly.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We can’t tell anybody. We will not tell anybody.

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me though?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Anybody can bring you.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just — Would he have to sign anything? He just doesn’t want anyone to know.

CLINIC: No, no. You sign everything. No, he can’t sign anything. You have to sign everything.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? It’s no problem at all. Now today, if you’re coming around 4:00 or 4:15, all we’ll be able to do the pregnancy test. So if it’s negative, we’d have to have you come back in to get birth control. But if you can get here before then, depending on what time you get here, we might be able to do everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But it’s no problem. No matter who brings you —

CALLER: It will be better to come like around 2:00 then?

CLINIC: If you can come around 2:00 that would be great, but why don’t you call us back and let us know so we can put you down if you’re going to come in and maybe do the full exam? Okay?

CALLER: But if I came in at 2:00 you think that if I wasn’t pregnant I could get birth control today?

CLINIC: Yes. That would be no problem. If you want to do that, come in about 2:00 and we’ll do everything.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: We’ll see you then. Bye bye.
